+Lazy Dreads that's great info man thanks i got pretty long and thick hair so i know i can get dreads now but i wanted to wait just a little bit longer like you said i wanted my dreads to be longer.
Omg I'm so ready to start my dreads again. I had them before and I took them out which was a terrible decision, but I've been growing it out for a while and it's a little over six inches so I think I'm going to start soon 😬 but IDK

You can expect your dreads to be pointy often during the first months of having them, because the roots keep getting tighter over time and the dreads simply don't have enough mass to keep them down. The moment you finally have enough length/mass it's heaven but the second wave of problems begins, the biggest one of them being the front hair too short. You can't pull it back to rubberband it with the rest of the hair so you need to pull them to a series of multiple smaller parts and then pull the parts back. Another annoyance of the just wrong sized dreads is the way the tips keep poking your eyes, every fking time! And if you have glasses, expect to clean them often because the dread is just the right size to keep wiping on the lenses . . and since it's too short to pull back, you can kinda see the annoyance it can become - but fear not, just another year and you won't even remember you had the problem. When you finally have really long dreads, they're really annoying to sleep with. So you pull them up and when you do, they crawl out of the bed. So. Keep your floors clean or else your dreads will do that for you, leading to that amazingly fresh look which everyone swears dreads are supposed to have, even if not many people have actually ever seen really dirty dreads (:
My hair is about 4 inches and I have begun wool rubbing it all day while I work, sit at home, etc. I can already feel my hair knotting and forming and its all sticking up. I am going for a messier, natural look as it grows. Is this a good method? As it grows more I will be starting to separate them and palm roll, etc.
With T&R you usually won't notice much length loss right away, but over the following months they will shrink up like all locks do. How much is impossible to say as it differs from person to person with thinner, longer hair generally losing more % than shorter, thicker hair. I would imagine you'd lose more than 5 inches, but only time will tell!
So I jumped the gun and started with twist and rip with a bit less than 6 inches, I have some reallly great starter dreads, but I have even more that have washed out... should I start over now that my hair is a good bit longer, OR should I be patient and just wait until new dreads form all on there own. I hear about the messy stage, but I don't know how to judge whether or not I'm in a messy stage or I'm in a failing stage. What should I do?! remove them and re-dread them all, I also think my sectioning would be much better this way. OR can I just leave it all and wait it out?
Vapur13 If the dreadlocks loosen so much that they fall back to free hair with no apparent sectioning, then they would need redoing. If the hair still remains sectioned, then it would not need redoing. I however wouldn't have recommended trying to twist and rip hair of only 6 inches.
I learned SO much having just tried it that I decided to take them out, re-nourish my hair, and do it right in about two more inches. Thank you for the quick response! Your channel has helped me immensely! Still working on that patience thing though. haha
Hi, my hair is 6-7" long. And my question is if i start to dread now will my hait be spikey or normal dreads but short? When to start to not be spikey? Thanks, Milan
I have been waiting 9 months for my hair to grow from a buzz cut it's about 4 inches long and I did one rip and twist dreadlock just because I'm inpatient the rest I'm going to let free form
I put a couple dreads on the bottom layer of my hair around my neck area. I watched videos of all the different methods and I chose to do the twist and rip because I thought it would be the best for my hair. I don't know if I did it right, my hair is very thick and wavy and it just seems that they aren't knotted up enough. I put small rubber bands on the top of the dread ( I wasn't sure wether or not I was supposed to do that) but it seems like it holds it all in place?
I was wondering if you had a opinion on the thinner dreadlocks versus thick dreadlocks. And if the thickness of your dreadlocks important to maintaining them
Hey man love your videos. May you answer a question for me. I want to start my dreadlocks. And my hair is about4 3/4 inches long. Which method is better the twist and rip method or the back comb method for shorter hair??? Thank you very much.
Hey! I got a question :) I had dreads for 3 years and I cutted them 2 months ago (my hair was damaged and didn't grew cause I dyed it too much). So now I'm growing my hair. My hair has never been so healthy like now and I never want do use chemicals anymore and never wanna dye it again. So my question is; I've got straight hair and now it's 2-3 cm how long will it take to start free form dreads? +/- 2 years (shoulder length) that I can start with them? I prefer natty dreads cause I love loops but there will be more shrinking right? And I heard it's better to start dreads at a short length than long? Is that also for free form or do I better wait till my hair passed my shoulders? I never want to use shampoo or anything else, doesn't matter how long it will take I cutted my dreads for a reason and I'm longing for healthy pure dreads. Thanks for the info!
i have a undercut because i decided to grow out my hair at a longer length on top. when i’ve started dreadlocks they have all made my hair look thin with my foot long top hair and half a foot long undercut. should i just wait till my undercut gets long enough and more close to even to start them and even it all out or deal with thin looking hair for a bit
If you’re adding extensions, do you still need 6 inches to start? I have 7-9 in on top and started growing out the sides I had been shaving down. I’m at about 1.5-2 In currently. Hoping to get it done in about 4 months 🤪
Roger Nortan It's impossible to be 100% certain, but a loss of around 1/4 wouldn't be unexpected - though at only 6 inches the losses won't be that noticeable.
ive had dreadlocks several times now and most the times ive had them ive started them with my hair atleast 6 inches. I just started them again and my hair is only 3 inches long. as having dreada so many times ive realized that they dread and look better when there grown into dreads rather then making them long.
Abe Valdez I used back combing and rubbber bands. Because its short its a pain in the ass so when u first make them they dont feel or look like they will work but throw some bands on them and keep rolling them between your fingers and they will start to form. also i use a little crochet hook to pull in the hairs that come out of it.
I only have 1 dreadlock cause I wanted to test it first and I lost about 5 inches of length and my dreadlock looks pretty short and it really pisses me off. I really don’t know what to do about it and I might get a dreadlock extension...
So ive had dreads for almost a year now and i used to have the side of my head shaved too..it has sense grown down almost to my shoulders could i form this hair into dreads yet or should i wait till it gets longer? Also will it look and conflict weirdly with my already formed dreads?
So! I'm in cosmetology school and I have a project called capstone. For this project we have to figure everything out on our own to create a desired look on a long haired mannequin. I want to dread my mannequin and I'm wondering the best method to use?
Hello. I want to start my locking process. So to start I'm 17(not that age matters) I am mixed so I have really fine hair. About your color but it's kinda curly but not like my father who is black or other mixed people bc I'm really fair skinned. So to the point. Sombody told me a good way to start tem off at my length (about 2-3 inches) is to take a large car sponge and poke holes in it about the size I want the locks to be and start rubbing it in my head in a circular motion. Well some of my hair curls up a little more but the whole right side of my head just like frizzed out and becomes straight like something u would see if somebody touched one of those electric balls. Any tips on what to do. I wana do free form tho. For personnel reasons I believe it's the best method. Also somebody told me that I should use this Kirks Castile soap. And suggestions to help me out. I appreciate te time you took to read this INCREDIBLY long post. XD
Jonathan Jones Hi Jonathan - I've not heard of anyone cutting holes in sponges before, but using rubbing motions is often used, usually with wool or towels though: ruclips.net/video/dBTL1bc26xoT/видео.htmlhe initial effects of rubbing techniques will just be frizzed up hair though - it can take quite a while for the frizzed up hair to properly start to knot up and section off - especially as your hair is very short. With regards to soap choice - I've not heard of Kirks Castile soap. There are many different dreadlock appropriate soap/shampoos out there - you will in general be looking for a soap that leaves as little residue as possible, doesn't overly condition the hair... but also at the same time keeps your scalp happy. It is generally a case of trial and error to find the soap that works best for you.
Thanks for the time. I think more than anything it's just nerves that I'm having. Of course it's to short to lock not. It just means somthing to me to do it ASAP. With much love Dread on
Jonathan Jones You could make a sea salt/water/essential oil mixture to spray on your hair to help your hair not be overly oily while trying to free form it between washes. It also smells really nice and might help the dreads form as you continue to rub your hair to get the knots in. But it will definitely be up to time and patience, really.
if you have a alot of fringe, would it look stupid to leave it out, or would you have to dread it too? Also, what about the parting, like if you were to dread your fringe, would you dread your hair over to the side, or would you have to split the parting straight through the middle?
I want to get dreads but I don't want to grow my hair down to my shoulders. Could I start my dreads when my hair is around ear length? What could be the negatives of this?
I have very thick afro hair and when i pull a single hair out it's twice the length of the apperance of my regular hair at first glance. Should i say that the length of a single strand is how long my hair is or should i go with what it looks like normally which is basically half of a strand of hair straightened out?
Great video, my question would be... The front of my hair is shorter then the middle back of my head, the front is about 8 inchs, and middle & back are 13 inchs, should I trim my hair? Thx
I wouldn't bother trimming it - the longer, the better. The longer the hair, the more knots can form in it. Once everything starts to form and lock up the differences in hair length will not be noticeable as everything shrinks and tightens anyway.
I want dreads a little bigger than his and have 6 inches of hair my first time trying to get them started didn't work out . My sections where too big and wouldn't hold. I had 60 twist. What's the best recommendation for me?
Once your dreadlocks are formed and they begin to grow out, how do you get the new hair growing from your scalp to form together since you can no longer use the methods you used to form your dreadlocks? Is it just that since the hair below it is already knotted and formed it will just follow suit in it's own natural way? Looking to start my dreads soon, thanks a ton.
Hey me Bruddah!!! I have a question for you, see I want dreads and I want to do the twist and rip method but my sides are shaved off so it's kind of uneven but the rest of my hair is about 5 inches long so with all that been said will that affect my dreads and anyway. let me know what you think.
Raymond West Personally I wouldn't use the twist & rip method on hair that short. It's a looser method and 5 inches really isn't going to give you a lot of length to form knots in.
hey wassup bro I'm hispanic Puerto Rican to be exact and I have curly hair and I would love to get my hair dreaded as a tribute to my great ancestors which are Native Indians and African which method do you think will be Best for my curly hair type
Jay Wolf sup Jay Wolf. I'm Luis and I saw your post about getting dreadlocks. I'm also Puerto Rican and have curly hair. I'm thinking of getting dreads for the same reasons you mentioned but also because I've recently bacame Rasta. I wanted to know if you did get your dreads done and if so how did they turn out? What was the length you started them at and which method did you choose? Thanks
Jay Wolf iam fully puertorican and i had 4 failed attemps too loc my hair cuz its so soft textured i had the back comb crochet method witch is the best for soft texured hair hope this helps good luck
ive been growing my hair for a little over a year and it is 8 inches long and i want to dread it but i dont know how long it will be after it is dreaded. How long would you estimate it to end up?
jacoreyious walker It depends on the method you're going to use - if you are going to naturally freeform the hair into dreadlocks, then you'll need to stop combing. If you're going to use a starting method such as backcomb or twist & rip etc - then you'll want to continue combing until it's time to start them.
Hey Great Video! Just a little question because im curious, iv been wanting dreads for just over a year now, iv been growing my hair for about 7 months, you said the recommended length is 6 inches, my fringe is 10 inches, down to my chin, however my sides are only just pushing onto 6 inches (i used to have a short back and sides, resulting in my hair being very uneven haha) should i start dreading my hair nowish, or do i keep growing my hair until the sides are longer, so there isnt that much of a noticable difference. Any responses are appreciated.
Well I have a side fade tape up hair style and my hair is about 4inches long I can't wait any longer for my hair to grow because it...kinda looks like I have a high top fade with a Mohawk and it don't really look right...what do u think I should do?
Rob Thompson With Caucasian hair 6 is inches is a safe length to go from for most methods - I know some have started with 4, but the shorter the hair, the higher risk of them washing out - however with African textured hair there are other methods available that will work with shorter hair - it all comes down to which method is to be used.
No one goes into dreadlocks with perfectly even hair across their whole head. Provided that overall it's long enough, it'll be fine. Worst thing you'd notice is that some of the dreads taper a little at the ends.
awesome vids bro, i am thinking of starting dreds when my hair eventually reaches 6 inch. but at the moment the top of my head is a lot longer then my sides, as i used to use clippers on the sides and leave about 1 inch on the top to style. would you recommend waiting until the sides reach 6 inchs? will it effect the dreds if the hair has such a difference in length? or should i just cut back the top to around 6in once the sides reach it and try then? thanks bro!
The hair doesn't all need to be the same length, but if all of the sides are less than 6 inches you might end up with dreads holding together on the top... but all the sides washing out.
awesome thanks for the quick reply! just scanning through a few more of your vids, is there one about the loose hairs? do you tuck them into somewhere so they can form with other dreds or do they eventually blend into others themselves?
Got long hair (Below my bottom of my neck) and haven't conditioned or brushed in about 3-4 months but still no sign of knotting. Guess that method isn't for everybody
Ok I have a question I would like to get dreads when I'm older an my hair is passed my back but idk how I should start it bcuz I'm scared that my hair will fall out, do u have any suggestions for girls that want dreads? Also I don't want fat dreads(if that makes since) I want them skinny..
My hair is longer in the front because I spike it and shorter all around. I was wanting to get just one dread on like, the left side of my head. Would my dreadlock come undone quickly considering my hair is shorter than 6inches? Or would it even be possible to get that done? Thanks
Hello buddy! I have kind of thick hair, as of i've heard from barbers etc. And i have haird down to my throat apple, on everyside of my hide. That should be enough to dread right? And which method do u recommend to use with this hair length ? Nice vids, keep it up :)
8plutten The longer it is, the easier it will be to work with. If it's longer than 6 inches, you can give it a go - it will be long enough to freeform or to backcomb.
Lazy Dreads my hair is about 6in long and I have a high top fade. I have the perfect hair for dreads. I just wanna know if my hair is long enough to have small dreads.
James Zavala I personally wouldn't have tried to twist & rip 5 inches of hair, in my experience it's quite difficult to create sufficient knots using t&r in short lengths of hair - however, that's just my experience with it. You will have to see whether they hold up through their first wash etc.
I got mine done at a salon but I HATE the way they boxed it out on the top its all space out does anyone know an I asked to fix this problem or am I stuck with it now I've had them in only a month
I have a question. I have 6 inches on the top of my head as I had a long hairstyle, but the sides are still too short to do anything with at the moment (especially at the bottom near my neck and ears). Would it be wise to wait until the sides have grown to 6 inches too? Thanks.
Hi, my hair is currently 5 inches long and is really bulky, wavy and curly. I'll probably do my dreads in a month when my hair is a bit longer. Could you please give me a prespective of how my dreads will look? I'm only asking because some people have smooth hair with short volume and usually the dreads don't look good from an aesthetic point of view. For some people the scalp is really visible and I don't want my scalp to be too exposed. Thank you :)
Hi João I do not try and guess how people's hair will turn out... because it really would be a guess, it's impossible to say. The scalp will often be exposed at the very start if the hair is pulled particularly tight at the root, but this will fade when the dread start to get washed and loosen at the root. The scalp will only remain visible if the roots are forcefully maintained or if you have particularly thin hair.
What if your hair isn't the same length all around? Like the sides of my hair are pretty short compared to top of my head but my hair still isnt up to 6 inches anywhere yet.
Johnest Mofo If you start dreadlocks with hair that is layered - the hair that is too short to knot can come loose out of the dread and just sort of float loose around the dreads... like a shorter hair cut with dreads growing out of it... it's recommended to wait until the hair is long enough.
Lazy Dreads Thanks so much for your reply Chris! Your videos have been a huge help. I really appreciate it. But what do you think about freeforming 10-12 inch hair, just as slow? 🌻👽
my hair is about 4 inches long and I twisted and riped a few sections on the back of my head about 2 months ago and they have shrunk about 1 inch already, should i leave them in or wash them out and start again when there longer???????
If you've already started them and they haven't washed out then there would be no benefit to take them out to start over - unless you are unhappy with the sizing or positioning / sectioning.
I've heard a lot of people say 6 inches is better, but I'd say to try it, then if you don't like them, you can take them out. :-) its not too difficult
I plan on getting dreads and my friend who already has them says that I have enough hair to start them off. Should I wait for more hair to grow some more or just go ahead and get them?
Bhoke Henry It's not super accurate - especially when doing it yourself, but pretty much just stretching the hair out along a ruler is the way to measure.

Lazy Dreads
Hi, my hair is 6-7" long. And my question is if i start to dread now will my hait be spikey or normal dreads but short? When to start to not be spikey?
Thanks, Milan
I have been waiting 9 months for my hair to grow from a buzz cut it's about 4 inches long and I did one rip and twist dreadlock just because I'm inpatient the rest I'm going to let free form
I started my hair with 2 to 3 inches of hair, i didnt back comb, i just crocheted the tip and interlocked the length
love your vids and the advice! keep up that awesomeness sir
Thanks Colin, glad you like what I do! :)
Your videos are great keep it up mate!
how long does one have to wait until dreadlocks start growing longer rather than shrinking?
hi lazydreads I was wondering what shampoo do you use xx
Hey! I got a question :)
I had dreads for 3 years and I cutted them 2 months ago (my hair was damaged and didn't grew cause I dyed it too much).
Hoping to get it done in about 4 months 🤪
hi man i like dreads my hair is 6 inches long like an afro i wanted too know how long would my hair be if i starded dreads ? thanks
Lazy Dreads
Roger Nortan It's impossible to be 100% certain, but a loss of around 1/4 wouldn't be unexpected - though at only 6 inches the losses won't be that noticeable.
thanxx man
ive had dreadlocks several times now and most the times ive had them ive started them with my hair atleast 6 inches. I just started them again and my hair is only 3 inches long. as having dreada so many times ive realized that they dread and look better when there grown into dreads rather then making them long.
What method did you use? My hair is a little shorter than 3 inches but I want to get them started already
Ok, i got like a undercut/sidecut (like ragnar in the serie vikings) my hair is 24cm long (it variate) i wonder what kind of style i could get,
XD
Any suggestions* I appreciate the time*
Jonathan Jones Hi Jonathan - I've not heard of anyone cutting holes in sponges before, but using rubbing motions is often used, usually with wool or towels though: ruclips.net/video/dBTL1bc26xoT/видео.htmlhe initial effects of rubbing techniques will just be frizzed up hair though - it can take quite a while for the frizzed up hair to properly start to knot up and section off - especially as your hair is very short.
With much love
Dread on
Jonathan Jones You could make a sea salt/water/essential oil mixture to spray on your hair to help your hair not be overly oily while trying to free form it between washes.
Robyn Walton all of these choices are going to depend on what you want - for some it would be exactly what they're looking for... others not so much.
Itachi8 You would measure it by using it's length while straight.
I have a pixie cut at the moment so I have to wait around a year and a half till I think the length will be comfortable for dreads.. Uhhhh
how do u feel about using waxes in the locks? do u go all naturl all the way through the process?

Great video, my question would be... The front of my hair is shorter then the middle back of my head, the front is about 8 inchs, and middle & back are 13 inchs, should I trim my hair? Thx
I wouldn't bother trimming it - the longer, the better. The longer the hair, the more knots can form in it. Once everything starts to form and lock up the differences in hair length will not be noticeable as everything shrinks and tightens anyway.
I want dread to stop around my eyes but also be able to tie it up at the back of the head so how long do I need my hair for this?
I want dreads a little bigger than his and have 6 inches of hair my first time trying to get them started didn't work out . My sections where too big and wouldn't hold. I had 60 twist. What's the best recommendation for me?
Good information! 👌🎇

My hair is already thick and long. What is the best product to use for starting dreads?
hey wassup bro I'm hispanic Puerto Rican to be exact and I have curly hair and I would love to get my hair dreaded as a tribute to my great ancestors which are Native Indians and African which method do you think will be Best for my curly hair type
Jay Wolf if you have curly hair you will have easier time with dreadlocks, pick your favourite style and go on :)
Jay Wolf
sup Jay Wolf.
Is there different types of dreads cause I really want chief keef's hair style
Hi i got a question ok so I'm growing my hair out to get dreads and I have been comming my hair do I need to stop doing that and just let it grow and
jacoreyious walker It depends on the method you're going to use - if you are going to naturally freeform the hair into dreadlocks, then you'll need to stop combing.
***** It doesn't matter so much that the hair length is uneven, but the longer the hair, the better.
why do my dreads keep shrinking do I keep washing them to much I only use shampoo for dreads do I use dread conditioner to
Well I have a side fade tape up hair style and my hair is about 4inches long I can't wait any longer for my hair to grow because it...kinda looks like I have a high top fade with a Mohawk and it don't really look right...what do u think I should do?
Rob Thompson With Caucasian hair 6 is inches is a safe length to go from for most methods - I know some have started with 4, but the shorter the hair, the higher risk of them washing out - however with African textured hair there are other methods available that will work with shorter hair - it all comes down to which method is to be used.
Ok I'm mixed...my hair well I can't really explain it but it's not...rough so I was just checkin thanks man
i have my hair layered in different lengths from many many years ago >.<
would that conflict with my dreadlock process at all?
No one goes into dreadlocks with perfectly even hair across their whole head. Provided that overall it's long enough, it'll be fine. Worst thing you'd notice is that some of the dreads taper a little at the ends.
thank ya brah~ :D
Length required for getting kill monger's dreads(black panther)??
awesome vids bro, i am thinking of starting dreds when my hair eventually reaches 6 inch. but at the moment the top of my head is a lot longer then my sides, as i used to use clippers on the sides and leave about 1 inch on the top to style. would you recommend waiting until the sides reach 6 inchs? will it effect the dreds if the hair has such a difference in length? or should i just cut back the top to around 6in once the sides reach it and try then?
Loose hairs knot together. They then either knot up with other loose hairs and create a new dreadlock or they knot into an existing dreadlock.
Thanks
skater0871 The shorter the hair, the fewer knots you can form and so the more easily it will come undone.
The hair that is 6 inches should be long enough to form dreadlocks from.
would it be ok to twist and rip with 5 inches of hair?
Q: I did twist n RIP at 5 inch hair there frizzy but is 5 inches ok for my super thick wavy hair?
James Zavala I personally wouldn't have tried to twist & rip 5 inches of hair, in my experience it's quite difficult to create sufficient knots using t&r in short lengths of hair - however, that's just my experience with it. You will have to see whether they hold up through their first wash etc.
My hair is only 5 inches but it starts knotting on its own daily. Any reason to hold off on letting the hair dread up?
I got mine done at a salon but I HATE the way they boxed it out on the top its all space out does anyone know an I asked to fix this problem or am I stuck with it now I've had them in only a month
thank you :D I've been wondering a bit about this :)
I have a question. I have 6 inches on the top of my head as I had a long hairstyle, but the sides are still too short to do anything with at the moment (especially at the bottom near my neck and ears). Would it be wise to wait until the sides have grown to 6 inches too? Thanks.
James Jeffery Depends if you want to dreadlock the sides or not.
How muchish length do you lose in each method?
Lazy Dreads Thank you for clarifying that for me!
Thank god I don't have thin hair!
Keep up with the good work, your videos are very useful :D
Glad to be able to help! :)
How many inches are your dreads from you're scalp in this video?
Thank you for these videos dude
is back come the best cuz we have the same hear?
What if your hair isn't the same length all around? Like the sides of my hair are pretty short compared to top of my head but my hair still isnt up to 6 inches anywhere yet.
Johnest Mofo If you start dreadlocks with hair that is layered - the hair that is too short to knot can come loose out of the dread and just sort of float loose around the dreads... like a shorter hair cut with dreads growing out of it... it's recommended to wait until the hair is long enough.
What about freeforming dreads from 6 inch hair? 🌻
Progress would likely be very slow from short hair.
Lazy Dreads thanks for the advice
is it true that thicker dreads take a little while longer to gain length??
+ Lazy Dreads I started my dreads with long hair my hair touch my shoulder & I had got my dreads without cutting my hair how long to they lock??
DreadHeadBoy It's impossible to say for certain, but losing around 1/4 - 1/3 of the overall length would be a reasonable guess.
is there anything wrong with just having dreads on top since I'm growing my hair out from a fade? should I just cut it even and wait for it to grow?
I have been thinking the same thing
I think its looks perfectly fine. I've seen plenty of people with high top like dreads with fade
my hairs only 3 inches but im just doing the dreads on top and a fade on the side and back. is 3 good enough ?
I've heard a lot of people say 6 inches is better, but I'd say to try it, then if you don't like them, you can take them out. :-) its not too difficult
Can you tie your locks back if they’re locked at 6 inches?
I plan on getting dreads and my friend who already has them says that I have enough hair to start them off. Should I wait for more hair to grow some more or just go ahead and get them?
Maalaquan Belton ...depends how long your hair is - without knowing that, it is quite difficult to say whether it is long enough.
So I'm starting my dreads today or tomorrow I have afro so Idk how rly check my length do I just pull my hair and measure with a ruler?
Bhoke Henry It's not super accurate - especially when doing it yourself, but pretty much just stretching the hair out along a ruler is the way to measure.
Lazy Dreads Thx! I'll try that too night with my afro!
My hair is 11 inches long would they be short if I got them started now?
