i am caucasian with extremely straight and thick hair. i did my dreads by only using residue free shampoo. i did not section, twist and rip or anything like that. it took about three whole years for them to actually lock and mature and i ended up with only 23 dreads. im pretty satisfied with them now although i did stress quite a bit during the 3 years it took. i dont have the best roots/sections but the dreads themselves are pretty beatiful now if i say so myself. my best advice for anyone using any method at any point in your journey is just dont worry about it. even just forget about your hair all together. i learned that they only get better given time regardless.

well they're only 2 years now after cutting off the first set 2 years ago, but at length to tie back so I'm pretty content. I mostly like that I can have more length than my loose hair in the long run except it grows considerably slower.
I started freeform dreads again last week. Keeping them clean is essential, last time I only washed 1-2 times a week and my hair was so greasy all the time they didn`t form. After a year of freeforming then I only had one or two knots that could maybe almost be considered a baby dreadlock. 1-2 times works for some people but my hair needs more washing to stay clean.
Do you use natural shampoo?, what hair type/ race are you, im a caucasian male and have just started my loc journey, do you know if tying my hair up in a rishi/top knot will affect the process, i usally wear it in one all day during work

Paul Flurry It’s not. I did it a few years back. You must also not run fingers through your hair and try not to tie it up too often. The hair needs to moove. Also, in the beginning, it helps to rub your hair with a towel a few times a day for 20 or so minutes. That way you get the knots started and they take over on their own.

I have a question, and I want to give some back story before I ask it. I understand if you're too busy to read all of this, so my question is separated out at the bottom. I want to share my journey for the same reason you want to share yours. My journey has taken me to many places. Back in August, I found my first freeform dreadlock, and it was quite a surprise to find in such a perfect shape and size (to my liking) - plus, I've wanted dreads for years but didn't know they could form so easily. After I asked someone with beautiful dreads about what to do (at the time, I wanted to get my information from people face to face rather than online), they said basically what you said - that they will form on their own and start popping up like trees. Well, sure enough, that's exactly what started happening (I hadn't brushed, used conditioner, or cut my hair in a year and a half since I had it cut really short, so by this time it was about shoulder length) She also told me to make sure the roots don't get too tight, so I started rubbing my dreads between my fingers from top to bottom. This didn't really help, but I thought it did. In retrospect, it wasn't a long enough conversation (she was just ringing me up at a register), and I didn't fully understand her. So for several months, every few days, I would work strenuously on separating and "twisting" my dreads, only for temporary relief. I eventually discovered the magic of Dr. Bronner's liquid soap, and ever since I've found that my dreads are forming with much more ease, and I rarely have to do much separating. I also stopped "twisting" them after meeting a girl with some of the most beautiful natural dreadlocks with very similar hair to mine and realized the uniqueness of my hair was nothing to dread (no pun intended but that's hilarious - and accurate no matter how you look at it). So after 8 months of natural dreadlocks, they're forming beautifully, but some of my earliest dreads are kind of scary, taking sharp turns, bunched up at the ends, thinner at the tops, and just totally rebellious (totally in my nature to rebel against trying to control myself). My very first dread looks nowhere near as beautiful as it started - it looks like a Popeye the sailor man forearm and fist. Is there any way to fix this??? I'm afraid to mess them up worse. If you have a video that explains this, the link will suffice. Thank you so much for your videos. They've been a huge help.
I have straight hair dreads, and since they're starter dreads they can come undone easily, what I do is i tie my dreads up into a ponytail at the top of my head, and let the water run through the gaps between dreads, without actually washing my dreads.
Donovan Holopainen my partial dreads do better after showering except the ones behind my ears, I figure since they’re giving the most trouble they’ll turn out the nicest I hope!
Hey guys.... Im confused about washi g the hair part.... If i shampoo, the knots would start to free up.... But i guess i have to wash... How do i wash??
My boyfriend has dreads from this method. After a year they are forming well but he still has some loose hair. I love them so I'm now downing the brush to try myself. I have waist length hair so I hope it will still dread.
Awesome video! I find I am very drawn to the neglect method.Even though I don't know how they will turn out once time goes on,but that's kind of the interesting part I find about it that draws me to it.I found when I did have shoulder length hair and came out of the bath,my hair was all knotted up very fast and some of them did already look like dreads, they were separated and knotted right tight. They were also hard as hell to brush out every night after my bath and sometimes I would feel like saying hell with this and just forget brushing them altogether because of the feeling of my arms going to fall off lol I have wavy thick hair, but I have no idea if that's the reason why they would get matted so fast or if it's the way I wash my hair,I don't know.Anyways I feel like I am going to first go with the neglect method and see what happens with it all.hopefully my boss don't get at me for having a lot of matted knots in my hair,he's kind of uptight which I hate and I hope I can dye them the way I want to as well.I hate jobs that control a persons hair and body.I mean as long as a person is clean that's all that should matter I think.
Freeform going on for me :) one year in, got 3 loopy crazy ones before I started combing again. Stopped combing again and got some extra ones forming now.
Thanks for making this vid! I started mine backcomb but I than went with the neglect method and what I loved the most ( and It still going on ) its to see the change, the improvement of the knotting! but you are right, you need to like the messy look. especially when they start, I looked like I was a biiiig mess with neglect hair haha!
I just have three questions: 1) you CAN use shampoo just no conditioner? 2) i run my fingers through my hair often to keep it out of my face, will that separate the hairs and anti dread it? 3) if at anytime i start to dislike it or find it unattractive is it easy to undo? Thanks for making this AMAZING informational video!
T.J. Parker 1) you can use a dreadlock-appropriate shampoo, but no conditioner. 2) you should not run your fingers through the hair. 3) it can be undone but is by no means easy to do.
OMG THANK YOU I've been looking for a video in freeformin for a black male with about 4 ins of hair this was extremely helpful my hair is pretty curly and can form a quick lose loc when rolled Question how do ya feel on Palm rolling to get the locs started and take early form Thanks Lazy Dreads
Glad to be of help. I do not believe that palm rolling makes much of a long term difference with regards to the forming / tightening of the locks. It can make them look more... 'lock-like'? but when the hair is washed it will lose whatever has been gained. Many people do appreciate the short term gains though and enjoy having something they can do to try and help the progress. It's unlikely you'd do any harm from it.
How do you know when to start separating? I'm afraid I'm keeping the dreads from forming by pulling them apart, but I don't want them to be too thick or knot together at the wrong points
Mr Chris, ur dreads look more wicked with every video :)! With starting the wool rubbing as u saw in my 20 question tag video, starting my 4th month of t&r soon, they r shrinking, getting thicker and forming wonderfully! I'll send u a pic soon. Keep rockin ur vids!
QUESTION! I went to a watermark over the weekend, and there was a bunch of chlorine in the water, and it made my dreads feel really dry. Is that bad?! PS. Love your videos!
I went on vacation to Denver for about a month and didn't bring a brush or use conditioner at all and by the end of the trip my hair was pretty heavily dreaded so I let it go lol now they're been thriving like crazy but I'm considering getting them touched up and finished some where
I don't brush, condition or shampoo since 1 year Not because I wanted dreads back then but because it's more natural But now I want dreads and I am confused because I do not have natural dreads though I did all those things unintentionally
I don't have dreads, but the dreads I like best are freeforms. If you go to a loctician, all the dreads are the same length and same thickness, and that's boring. Freeforms, while they take time, are preferable. Each loc is of different lengths and thicknesses, a wide variety, and often ending in a taper that lets everyone know they have not been cut since the dread journey began. Freeforms are hair at its most natural, and are formed not only on how one lives his life, but also, and perhaps more importantly, on his DNA. The freeforms, therefore, are part of who are, completely unique to you. A set of freeforms is like a set of fingerprints; no two is the same. Because of this, freeforms are a great way to express your own individuality.
I had twist and rip dreadlocks for a year, I brushed them out because I died them too much and I just wanted healthier dreads. I started the twist and rip method again. I was able to put in six at the bottom of my scalp. I've now decided to keep them separate and have been free forming the rest of my hair. I definitely like the freeform way better. I'm just concerned about getting big locks. I've been separating the thicker knots that have been forming to prevent big locks. Can you separate beginner locks too much? My hair tangles super easy, so they're not going away, I just want to make sure I'm not slowing down the process even more than what it is to begin with.
i had freeform for half year and they just looked like messy hair, no dreads. in end i just rip and twist them. took 3-4 months to start shrink, and they have crazy loops and zigzags, i never use crotchet or maintance my roots, let them grow how they want.
I wish i saw this eight months ago No one really explains these details you know and they're very important,I was told by my cousin just to wash and dry and let it grow and he didn't say anything else like don't condition,No wonder why not all of my hair has been locked,This is so frustrating is there anyway I can fix this?lol I am desperate,I only found out on my seventh month into this not to condition And on top of that I wasn't sure so I didn't condition and its only been a month but still some of my hair didnt locked,What a waste of good eight months,You're probably the only sensible person to explain details,I was so desperate I ended up buying a sponge but I still don't know why it is not locking,Is it to late because I needed to do all of this from the beginning because it's the neglected method? I never combed my hair in eight months and I did use the towel method after five or six months into this But still not all of my hair locked I feel like I did this whole thing in a really wrong way
I once had dreads forming naturally after I stopped brushing my hair. Sadly, I got worried because they were massive, And I didn't know what was happening.
im fairly new to locs but ive always wanted the "natural" loc look and im finally ready to start but my only question is if i want to wash my hair while growing it how often should i wash it and should i use shampoo? if so what brand or kind of shampoo would u reccomend?
i have a lot more time than money at the moment so i figured maybe i will try this out. i have been quoted around $500 and up for a set of new dreads....! So my question is would you recommend sectioning my hair with rubberbands at the beginning so that i can get better control on how my sections locks up? and how often should i wash my hair? fortunately i do live close to the beach so i may try that as well. thanks so much!!
my hair always knots up alot more when i wash my hair. i think its all about your hair. mine gets to locking in like a week. then i brush it out because i get scared
Is there anything you have to be careful of to protect the hair follicles? I had locks that were started by back coming about 10 years ago that lasted for nearly three years before I cut them. Yours look long and heavy, much more mature than mine were. So I'm asking if you've ever encountered any advice to keep the hair follicles and scalp very healthy
peace 🙏 do you think towel-drying hair after washing could prevent the forming of knots? when i tried neglect-method a few years ago, thats what seemed to happen. im planning to try again, starting from a buzzcut. im considering not towel drying this time. thank you 🙏
I did the twist and rip method a little more than a week ago. My "dreads" have almost completely fallen out except for a small part of the middle in each one. They were fine until I washed my hair. I know it has not been long at all, but I am scared they will never form. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!
Dharma Seeker yes! I'm redoing mine neglect this time after I brushed my old ones out. I have like mermaid waves and thick hair . I'm Mexican and white ! definitely possibly
Brittany Kidwill Lol yep! I'm white with wavy thick hair and it worked out perfect for me. I love seeing all types of races and different hair types try dreads.
First: Your dreads are beautiful. Second: what kind of shampoo do you use? I've read that there are certain shampoos that help speed up the process and such.
When you say NO CONDITIONER, does that include like Coconut Oil, Castor Oil and Jojoba Oil. I also wash my hair with Shea Moisture shampoo. What do you wash your Hair With
I'm planning to start freeform method as my hair knots up sooo fast and is very "locky" but i'm just curious about a few things, should I section off the dreads as they form to avoid "rat nests" as I get huge knots really really easily. Or should I wait for the large knots to form first and then section them apart?
when I dont wash my hair, my hair just feels so much better to maintain and looks good by itself without touching it. Also, I love the smell of my hair when I dont wash it.
Basically once u let ur lox grow naturally it will grow and loc up to ur own personality lox is a spiritual thing plus to leave ur lox grow naturally With out twisting and so forth u will have a stronger foundation vs hairdresser twist up lox the stronger ur foundation the better ur lox will grow and flourish Every one lox is individual no one lox will grow the same people say I want my lox look like urs but in reality no ones lox will never look the same
Thank you so much for this video! I was really looking for such a video, I started my neglected dreads journey 31 days ago and I'm just relieved to see I did everything right until now.. No brushing, no conditioning, only shampoo :) I'm scared that the hair at the back of my head will become one big lock. I separate it regularly, but every morning it looks... kinda.. "knobbed" (if that means something in English :D). What do you recommend doing with my hair before going to sleep? Should I make a ponytail or a bun? Or just leave it?
mumkere You should just leave it. A lot of the progress happens at night while your head moves the hair around in your sleep. Having them tied up every night could considerably hinder their progress... and likely be uncomfortable. You just have to keep separating and wait to see how they turn out.. it's kind of how it goes when you're forming them naturally.
What if you have thick and dense hair, but it is really smooth and silky??? I have a couple of what look like knots..... just let them be? Hair length is about 8-11cm
I'm currently brushing out my 3 year old backcombed dreads and want to start a new journey with neglected locks. I've noticed most of the ends and other parts have been damaged from crocheting in the early stages.. now my question is; should I trim the ends off of the dead and damaged hair or would the condition of it make my hair lock up easier?
Alister Akerman Not sure I'd bother cutting them off. Longer hair knots easier/faster... worst case scenario is that the hair is so damaged that it breaks off... but if you're happy cutting it off anyway, that's probably not going to be a big deal.
Hi, I just stopped brushing and conditioning my hair about two weeks ago and my hair is already sectioning off in a few areas; about 5 baby dreads. is it too early to separate them? because I have tried twice now and I feel like I am just pulling all the knots apart as its not knotting up at the root yet. I just dont want to end up with huge dreaded areas at the root later on. When and how should I be separating them?
lila pryor You separate them when the hair starts to knot into clumps that are larger than you want - if you just leave them alone completely the clumps will all join up - you need to make sure you keep the clumps separated into roughly the size you wish them to remain.
with the salt spray, this might seem as a silly questions, but do you need to keep the salt-spray in your hair, or wash it off after a while? also, does it matter what salt you use? my hair have very fine palate
Can you where a baseball cap while you are growing freeform in the beginning? Or would that really slow the process? I live out in hawaii so beach every weekend for sure 🤙

love the top. wish everyone knew about this. so many people say I'm doing it wrong. When I'm doing what u say. thank you for ur support x
I feel I can identify most with this method - it's pros and cons, so I'm glad to have watched this! :-) thanks for another great video!
2 and a half years in with freeformin..freakin love it 💯
Any advice on how to wash hair without undoing dreads?
Shaggy Rogers ignore your hair when you wash your hair, only focus on your scalp
Thanks. I was looking for this answer for hours
Thank you for the info It has help me decide the type of dreads that I want.
I just have three questions:
1) you CAN use shampoo just no conditioner?
2) i run my fingers through my hair often to keep it out of my face, will that separate the hairs and anti dread it?
3) if at anytime i start to dislike it or find it unattractive is it easy to undo?
Thanks for making this AMAZING informational video!
T.J. Parker
1) you can use a dreadlock-appropriate shampoo, but no conditioner.
2) you should not run your fingers through the hair.
3) it can be undone but is by no means easy to do.
great video thank you!! with straight hair, does tying it up get in the way of natural locks to form, or would leaving it down be best? :)
OMG THANK YOU I've been looking for a video in freeformin for a black male with about 4 ins of hair this was extremely helpful my hair is pretty curly and can form a quick lose loc when rolled
Question how do ya feel on Palm rolling to get the locs started and take early form
Thanks Lazy Dreads
Glad to be of help.
I do not believe that palm rolling makes much of a long term difference with regards to the forming / tightening of the locks. It can make them look more... 'lock-like'? but when the hair is washed it will lose whatever has been gained. Many people do appreciate the short term gains though and enjoy having something they can do to try and help the progress. It's unlikely you'd do any harm from it.
Month and a half in and I have 4 well shaped locs on the back and about every week or so a new one forms.
How do you know when to start separating? I'm afraid I'm keeping the dreads from forming by pulling them apart, but I don't want them to be too thick or knot together at the wrong points
I accidentally grew 3 neglect locs, didnt realize it till i went to go get my head shaved down for my mohawk
I went on vacation to Denver for about a month and didn't bring a brush or use conditioner at all and by the end of the trip my hair was pretty heavily dreaded so I let it go lol now they're been thriving like crazy but I'm considering getting them touched up and finished some where
How you talk reminds me of the Dentist Bounty Hunter in Django, lol.
I don't brush, condition or shampoo since 1 year
Not because I wanted dreads back then but because it's more natural
But now I want dreads and I am confused because I do not have natural dreads though I did all those things unintentionally
Ok I'm gonna do this. Wish me luck. Im aiming for the XXXtentacion look
Spritzaz hot look right there. I recommend keeping the eyebrows :))
I never combed my hair in eight months and I did use the towel method after five or six months into this But still not all of my hair locked I feel like I did this whole thing in a really wrong way
Your locs are gorgeous
I once had dreads forming naturally after I stopped brushing my hair. Sadly, I got worried because they were massive, And I didn't know what was happening.
You're so chill man, I subbed
im fairly new to locs but ive always wanted the "natural" loc look and im finally ready to start but my only question is if i want to wash my hair while growing it how often should i wash it and should i use shampoo? if so what brand or kind of shampoo would u reccomend?
You're my spirit animal. haha
I'm growing out my hair out and once my hair is long I'm going to make dreads. Wish me luck
i have a lot more time than money at the moment so i figured maybe i will try this out. i have been quoted around $500 and up for a set of new dreads....!
So my question is would you recommend sectioning my hair with rubberbands at the beginning so that i can get better control on how my sections locks up? and how often should i wash my hair? fortunately i do live close to the beach so i may try that as well. thanks so much!!
Very good video. Thanks for sharing :)
my hair always knots up alot more when i wash my hair. i think its all about your hair. mine gets to locking in like a week. then i brush it out because i get scared
Is there anything you have to be careful of to protect the hair follicles? I had locks that were started by back coming about 10 years ago that lasted for nearly three years before I cut them. Yours look long and heavy, much more mature than mine were. So I'm asking if you've ever encountered any advice to keep the hair follicles and scalp very healthy
peace 🙏 do you think towel-drying hair after washing could prevent the forming of knots? when i tried neglect-method a few years ago, thats what seemed to happen. im planning to try again, starting from a buzzcut. im considering not towel drying this time. thank you 🙏
i really do dig neglected ...
I did the twist and rip method a little more than a week ago. My "dreads" have almost completely fallen out except for a small part of the middle in each one. They were fine until I washed my hair. I know it has not been long at all, but I am scared they will never form. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!
can this happen with realy realy thick wavy hair?
Los Beezy ikr that's the type of hair I have
Dharma Seeker yes!
+K0A1995 I use, and recommend dreadlock specific shampoos. I personally favour shampoos from Dollylocks and Super Dread at the moment.
When you say NO CONDITIONER, does that include like Coconut Oil, Castor Oil and Jojoba Oil. I also wash my hair with Shea Moisture shampoo. What do you wash your Hair With
there is a sea salt spray for texturing called "Beach Babe" is the brand and I can confirm, it's salty!
Do you have to moisturizer and oil them? If so how often?
So like For the neglect method. When I shower I just water my hair. I should Start using the shampoo but don't brush
I haven't washed my hair in like 6 months lol
could be all sorts of stuff. dirty towels, dirty pillow cases, nasty tap water ect. most likely not using a proper cleaning technique
I am now 4 days with no brush. And about 2 weeks no conditioner. Wish me luck.
Im going neglect. thx
Should I wet my hair every morning to get dreads and wash every week and that's it
Question: If you have a dread dangling hanging on some strands what to do to keep the dread and get it like the rest of your dreads?
the rubbing method starts for me today! i will come back in a month or 2 and tell you how far i have come :D
how are the dreads doing? It's been six months.
Basically once u let ur lox grow naturally it will grow and loc up to ur own personality lox is a spiritual thing plus to leave ur lox grow naturally With out twisting and so forth u will have a stronger foundation vs hairdresser twist up lox the stronger ur foundation the better ur lox will grow and flourish
Every one lox is individual no one lox will grow the same people say I want my lox look like urs but in reality no ones lox will never look the same
I had my dreads interlocked for a year now but I wanna switch over to freeform, is this still possible
The dreadlocks style I'm wanting to go for is the Bob Marley dreadlocks so what do I need to do to get them like that and how long do I gotta wait
I've never actually tried getting dreads, but I've been interested. However, I never wash my hair, nor do I brush it. And no dreads. What's going on?
you have such a fun opening
Should I not keep my hair up in a pony tail during free form process
Can I free form from having parted crochet locks? They are bout 3 inches long. And is it a good idea?
+Lazy Dreads my hair can be really ichy and I want to know that if I scratch my head, would it be considered combing?
no, sigh
one other con would be it looks weird in public when in the middle of the process
Thank you so much for this video! I was really looking for such a video, I started my neglected dreads journey 31 days ago and I'm just relieved to see I did everything right until now.. No brushing, no conditioning, only shampoo :)
I'm scared that the hair at the back of my head will become one big lock.
So when he says don't condition your hair, does that also mean don't moisturize it daily? Also how long in between washes?
What if you have thick and dense hair, but it is really smooth and silky??? I have a couple of what look like knots..... just let them be? Hair length is about 8-11cm
i couldnt help but bust out laughing when you said that you dont even have to pay anyone, you dont even have to do it yourself!
haha
I'm currently brushing out my 3 year old backcombed dreads and want to start a new journey with neglected locks. I've noticed most of the ends and other parts have been damaged from crocheting in the early stages.. now my question is; should I trim the ends off of the dead and damaged hair or would the condition of it make my hair lock up easier?
Alister Akerman Not sure I'd bother cutting them off. Longer hair knots easier/faster... worst case scenario is that the hair is so damaged that it breaks off... but if you're happy cutting it off anyway, that's probably not going to be a big deal.
God! This is so nostalgic for me.
Thanx a million+ times buddy!
and i have two strand twist some parts of my hair so praticle im having two strands and free form or neglected locs
What kind of shampoo should I use to start start my dreads from day 1 with non dreaded hair?
Hi, I just stopped brushing and conditioning my hair about two weeks ago and my hair is already sectioning off in a few areas; about 5 baby dreads. is it too early to separate them? because I have tried twice now and I feel like I am just pulling all the knots apart as its not knotting up at the root yet. I just dont want to end up with huge dreaded areas at the root later on. When and how should I be separating them?
lila pryor You separate them when the hair starts to knot into clumps that are larger than you want - if you just leave them alone completely the clumps will all join up - you need to make sure you keep the clumps separated into roughly the size you wish them to remain.
with the salt spray, this might seem as a silly questions, but do you need to keep the salt-spray in your hair, or wash it off after a while?
also, does it matter what salt you use? my hair have very fine palate
keep the salt spray in your hair for 10 min to 2 hours then wash it out
Can you where a baseball cap while you are growing freeform in the beginning? Or would that really slow the process? I live out in hawaii so beach every weekend for sure 🤙
Should I put like absolutely nothing in my hair or should I use a specific kind of soap also is it okay if my hair is dyed
