Aside from the video where I'm outside you're the first person to say that I'm not loud enough. I recommend you turn it up or get closer to your speakers bro...
When u said the part about ending up with one giant dreadlock, I pictured a person with a giant dreadlock, and for some reason I found this so funny that I laughed until my stomach hurt... I'm weird ._.
It's easier to decide once you've started preparing the hair - starting with a residue-free shampoo and stopping with conditioners. You may find your hair isn't as soft as you thought. Anyway, longer hair I find is easier to twist and rip but if your hair is very soft you may have more luck with backcomb.
Loops are caused by the shinkage that occurs as the hairs compress into the dreads. You get it more often with T&R because the dreads you make with that method aren't as tight to begin with. Backcombed dreads tend to start out tighter and therefore don't usually shrink and loop quite so much.
Haha! I love this video because I watched a few of your newer ones and then this one your super monotone and not the least bit excited but you’re funny so I’m still laughing. Your just more serious and I guess I’m entertained 🤣 BUT THANK YOU FOR ALL THE INFO! I just started dreadlocks and I’m excited to see them progress over time! ❤️
The other two popular methods are backcomb and twist and rip. There's not much between the two of them. They both require a little bit of practice and skill to do, so I'd recommend you go for which ever of those two methods you're better are. You can always try both out at the start and see which you find easier.
I always see stuff about how bad salon dreads are (usually people who work with straight hair/ dying etc in a mall) but I think it's good to let people know that there are independent people who do this for a living and do not charge salon prices, and don't use chemicals/waxes etc. We are here to help people and I'd like to think a lot of us can offer sound advice from all our experience. Also, human hair extensions DO knot up over time and can look exactly like the rest of the persons head.
The easiest way to get multiple dreads to join together is to bind them at the root, preferably with something like a hair tie or some tough string. Once they have started to merge at the root you can remove the binding, but you might have to cut it if hair has dreaded over the top of it.
Ok. I also wanted to know if I can put my hair in a hat while I allow them to lock. Or do they need to be free? Also what about wearing hats/toboggans early in the process? Will they affect them negatively or positively or any at all?
Hello there! The important part is to get the locks to the size and position that you want. Then you need to make sure that each lock has enough knots in it so that it's not going to just fall apart, other than that you have no worries. You see what you make at the start isn't the lock itself, you're just lumping hair together and holding it with a few knots. Then over the following months they will lock themselves and mature. Even if you T&R'd them super tight the roots would start to loosen
Hey just wanted to let you know I really like your channel. You really seem experienced & knowledgeable. I know in a previous video you mentioned started your locs with the backcomb method. I'm very interested in growing organic/natural locs. Knowing what you know now, would you choose a different method if you were just starting your journey?
If I was to start back over at 14 again I'd start them via twist & rip at home rather than backcomb at a salon. If I was to restart now at 21 I'd neglect them.
The back locks up faster because you sleep on your back and so they get rubbed and moved around while you move around in your sleep. The rest of your head will catch up but it'll take more time. You can try and mimic some of the movement at the back by rubbing wool clothing around on the loose hairs. It'll make them frizzy and bunch up.
If you're going with the neglect method then the hair will decide where it will section and lock up and you'll have no control over it. The thinning hair will lock up but if there isn't a lot of hair there the dreads will be thinner and you won't get a lot of them. If your hair continues to recede then the roots of those dreads will get thinner and if the dread gets too long and heavy there's a risk it might break off. But if you watch out for it you should be fine.
Well wool rubbing in itself isn't really a method for starting dreads, it's just a way of getting the hairs frizzy and knotty. If you're only using the wool rubbing technique then it's pretty much the natural/neglect method where the wool rubbing and salt is just speeding it up slightly by making the hairs more likely to knot. There's not really much I can add, you're just going to have to be patient until it starts to come together.
I speak for everyone when I say we all thoroughly appreciate your videos man. I'm wanting dreads now, wanted them 3 years ago but I was talked out of it, now I realise that I will only ever get them if I do them now. I have extremely short hair (I cut it off 3 years ago and I have had short hair styles since) What is the length I can start with? I know 3" is too rushed, what about 4"? some say 5-7"....
It's impossible to say, there are too many factors involved to be able to accurately determine how much they'll shrink, it depends on the hair length but also the method used, how thick your hair is, how large you make your sections and what hair type you have.
Ok you have helped me narrow down to back combing and twist and rip. My hair is perfect for natural but I want more control than that would allow. What do you recommend?
my hair is like down to my shoulders and i want to dread it but i have like really soft straight hair so im not sure which method would be best for me and you really seem to know what ur talking about if you'd care t give me your opinion
Hey you ever heard of the wool hat rubbing method? Im looking foward to start my dreads soon but there is not that much of information on the internet about this
awesome video question,,my dreads just turned 2 yrs old aug 3 if I wear a dreadsox to bed will it slow the roots down from dreading up?? don't want to create a problem,, thanks for all yr videos there a lot of help an yr dreads are beautiful!!!
Question: can you do a combination of both methods?? I'm paying somebody to do mine tomorrow I like the tightness of back combed dreads but I also don't want to lose too much length right away.
I noticed my hair started to form dreads on the back of my head before anywhere else.. The back of my head looks pretty dreaded where my front hasnt even started.. any way of changing this? My hair is super curly, frizzy and dry..
I've decided to go for the dreadlocks I have thick thick brown horse hair irish native American and German its 1 inch right now but I am waiting until its 8 inches to start listen to punk rock! High fives and pozi vibes!
I have made a small dreadlock using the twist and rip method and the top has came undone and is back to being like normal hair. Should I take it out and start again or is this normal?
Hey man! love your videos. I'm really want to dread my hair! I'm going to use back comb method but I'm kind of having a problem. I ordered a dread comb off amazon and it got here Saturday. not having enough time to do my whole head right then I did one on the side of my head. but its coming loose near the root. Actually the half of the dread close to my head is almost completely straight hair. my hair is about 9 inches. is this a problem or just part of the process?
Thanks, so your saying that if the roots have come together you should leave it and then the rest of the dread will form? Because I have twist and ripped two and the roots have joined :)
This is totally irrelevant... but am I the only one who noticed that if you cover his chin with your hand he looks like Arya Stark from The Game Of Thrones LMAO
I got my hair permed when I was younger just merely to have it curly and after about a month or two just got tired of doing crap with it so I just went day to day and never brushed it and about after 5 months basically had "locs" I guess you can say growing under it so my hair always looked poofy with the somewhat brushed hair on top of the giant mess of hair and knots under it
When you backcomb you aren't making the dreadlock, you're just knotting the hair into sections. Don't worry if it gets a little loose, as long as it's not completely washed out it'll still knot in the sections you've made.
Ok cool. I run a business so I have to keep them as professional as possible. Do you by chance know where to find the wraps that the rastas wear? I don't even know what they are called
Hi, my hair is curly and has started to form dreads naturally. Some are bigger than others, would i be able to use the twist and rip method on say two small already formed dreads to make a bigger one? I sort of already tried and it made the dread look twisted/spiral and was afraid it would stay looking like this, but at the roots it had formed together slightly. :)
Thank you TruthTeller99. Some will tell you as short as 4", but I think you'll have a much better chance of success if you hold out for 6" or more. The longer the hair = the more knots you'll be able to form initially = the better your chances are that they won't just wash straight out.
Hey bro, first off nice shirt! But i have twist n rip dreds, i like the natural/neglect better. So will tnr dredlocks turn to free form if i stop twisting them and just let them grow?
I found it really funny that you said "If you are watching this, it probably means that you're at least a teeny tiny bit interested in getting dread locks" lol I've always found dreads a bit gross, but at the same time really interesting, and something I want to try. But, my question is, do you think it's harder to hav only partially dreaded hair? I really want to try to have dreads at some point, but I don't think I'd be comfortable with a whole head of dreads. :p
It is considerably more difficult to have only a partial head of dreads. You can't use conditioner on dreadlocks, conditioner is like anti-dreadlocks. So what starts out as just a few dreadlocks is very difficult to contain as the non-dreaded hair will start knotting up and getting stuck to the dreadlocked hair. People do it, it's not impossible, it can just be a lot of work trying to keep one part of your head brushed and soft, while the other part... can't be brushed or softened etc.
That's what I was thinking. I really want to try it, but I'm on the fence about it a lot. If any thing, I'd probably end up getting thinner dreadlocks just because I don't like making things more difficult for my self. Thanks for replying. It some what helped me make my decision. :p
Right now I'm kidn og just experimenting with my hair, and I did just one on the bottom. I've had it for about a week now, and it's tangling into my other har. I'm liking it so far, but I'm going to keep seeing what happens with this little one, and I'm going to see how long I can keep it in my hair with out me getting tired of it before I actually do bigger parts of my hair. (:
My other problem is that a lot of folks who have done neglect/natural etc, like to give advice on extensions when they don't really know the details. There are human hair, synthetics (usually a plastic), wool etc.. and they are all very different. I only work with with human hair but like I mentioned it can & will knot up just as normal hair would, it just takes a longer amount of time. It's dangerous to give out info that isn't complete, especially when people are looking up to you.
Haydn Vincent Hi Haydn, unfortunately I don't have a whole lot of experience with starting out with African textured hair, some methods are interchangeable between hair types such as freeform/natural/neglect and backcomb whereas others are more suited to specific types, such as twist & rip. There are a number of different methods that are used on African textured hair: twist, interlock, freeform among others, but unfortunately I'm afraid I couldn't say which would get you closer to your desired look.
I just started my dreads about 3 days ago I'm 15 in so far with the twist and rip method, and I'm happy the little guys been holding i well so far. Any tips on what I should use for my oily hair to dry it out!?
Jacob Buffetta It will take time for the dreadlocks to settle whether the hair is naturally oily or not. You'll need to try out different shampoos until you find the one that works best for you and your hair type. ruclips.net/video/g35MhTn6pPo/видео.html
Hey there. I started dreading my hair on Sunday and I'm doing it by myself using twist and rip. Honestly they suck. They're terrible. Like each one is loose from the root bout an inch. Is there a way I can fix that? Thanks:/
Hello lady_red_dread. I myself don't post on there a whole lot at the moment because it tends to be pretty temperamental with me and although I can be patient with hair... not so much with computers!
How does one manage new growth with the twist and rip method? I would assume you have to leave the starter lock alone in order for it to mature. So how do you get the new growth to lock? do you incorporate the interlock method after your stater dreads have matured?
Hi, there is a period where the hair will start to grow out a little in the time before the dreadlock really shrinks up and matures, but provided the roots are left alone, the new growth will lock itself naturally. This is the method by which my hair grows and the method I talk about and recommend in my videos. Since over the years I've trimmed my dreads - all the hair you can see on my head is new growth and it's all locked as it's grown out without any need for any tools or techniques. Obviously if the interlock method is something you're interested in, that would work on the new growth too, but interlocking will twist and pull the new growth quite tightly, which would make it too tight to then lock naturally - so you would need to keep reinterlocking as it grew and if further down the line you did decide you'd like to let the new growth lock naturally, you would need to let it grow out for quite a while before it would become loose enough to begin that process after how tight and twisted the interlock can make the roots.
Personally I think I'd get waaay too warm if I wore something on my head at night, but I don't think you'll have any problems with it affecting your roots.
Thanks anyways. I would love to be featured in your dreads of the month and let you see how it is coming along. most likely for Nov? Once they have some time to form.
Jake Goldberg When you have a picture you should definitely send it in, but there is quite a long queue on pictures - they are 'dreadlocks of the month' for the month which they are featured on the facebook page, not the month in which they were submitted.
Im pretty sure now that Im gonna get dreads, My hair just about comes down to my shoulders. I saw in another video you said to use the residue free shampoo before hand so you get used to etc. Would 8 weeks be long enough to do this as Im going back to school after a holiday in a few days and have 8 weeks before another 2 weeks off. I was wanting to do it in those 2 weeks that were off so I had a whole day free to get it done.
what do you think about the crochet method? I can't find anyone to help me start my method and have found only one salon close by and they only use this method
Caleb Snider It is a popular method that has very distinct results that some people either very much want... or very much do not want. As the use of crochet hooks carries some degree of risk of damage to the hair/dreadlocks it is not a method that I myself am comfortable recommending.
Lazy Dreads what would you recommend on doing? I want to get started only dreadlock journey but have not found anyone else who can help get me started. I just don't want to end up having to cut my locks because of breakage
Caleb Snider You need to do what is right for you - I would recommend researching the crochet method, investigating the method, results and the pros & cons of that method and then you can decide for yourself whether you feel that it is the right choice for you - if it is, then you know someone who is able to help - if it's not then I would recommend doing the same sort of research for other available methods until you find the method which you'd like to use. Once you know which method you want to go with - then you can start to look for someone to help you with that particular method.
+Lazy Dreads hey bro, I'm considering getting dreads but my local salons only do a back comb and crochet method. Will this give a more natural look because the crochet is not used in its own?
I would imagine Jaden Smith can afford to have someone individually stick up each clump of hair, should he so want! ^^ Short twisted dreads in afro textured hair will stick up in the same way.
Hey there. So did I get this right now? If I wash my hair daily without any conditioner and after washing I dry it really well and just leave it, does it form me dreads? Should I also try to take parts of hair and rub them like you showed on method two?
Hey I was hoping you could help me. I've been wanting to dread my hair for a while now and my hair is about 7-8 inches do I have to do anything to my hair first or can I just start dreading my hair? I was going to use the twist and rip method.
King Zuhri Simply put: unfortunately not. If you neglect the hair, it will start to knot up - you can't backcomb through knotted hair... well... you can - but it'll undo the knots that formed via the neglect (backcombing is still combing). So the backcombing will be uncomfortable as you'll have to backcomb through all the knots - this will end up just starting them over anyhow. I know some people neglect the hair a while to try and see where the hair naturally starts to section and then backcomb over the top, but it's not something I'd really recommend.
I have short hair, I'm growing it because I like the idea of dreads. It grows fast and all but idk about my hair type, my brother has wavy long hair but idk what i have yet, should i know how my hair will turn out yet or do the signs show when it gets long enough? I know that its thick though and can you recommend me a shampoo or should i not worry about that yet?
I wouldn't worry about the hair type so much... if it's Caucasian hair - backcomb it if it's short or twist & rip it, if it's long. The shampoo.. I couldn't say because I don't know what shampoos are available where you live, you'll have to research that a little yourself.
Have you ever seen curly dreads? :p Wait. Don't answer that. No, they won't be curly. You can make dreadlocks curly with a curling iron, but they don't stay that way.
I chose to follow my mom's footsteps with dreads & got them interlocked with not really any knowledge of the different types. I'm wondering is there any preferred way of having my dreads continue to dread without continuing with this method ? After doing some research i feel like i should of just used another method now. Any type of suggestion or advice on what i should do would be greatly appreciated. I've noticed no problems so far & I'm nearly two months in now. I have African textured hair too btw.
OneSource Well if you don't wish to continue interlocking, the new growth will lock on it's own if you leave it long enough to freeform - there will be a messy stage in-between, but if the hair is given enough time, the new hair that grows in will form by itself. If you want to look more into interlocking you can check out a RUclipsr called Knotlocks - he has videos on his interlock journey on his page.
Last time I had dreads (had them for about 5 months), I decided to give up and take them out. Now I REALLY miss them and I am planning to give it another go this summer. Any advice on pushing through the first year or so?
My advice is to not sit and look at them, or tweak at them or worry about them because none of those things are going to help them go any faster but they are likely to stress you out.
Brah im loveing the videos great information!, yet i have a question. I'm Afro-American hair long and curls could i just twist/roll my hair and add a little wax to the twist, not the base and let it grow like that? i have did a few sections (3) already and it dose seem to hold just points in a odd direction but holds. would you recommend this as a start ?
Twisting and rolling should work for you and it's normal that they are pointy at the start when they're new and stiff, but I wouldn't recommend the wax.
I have front forehead hair till my neck that's the length of my hair it took 1 yr to grow and it's black as I am from India ,so wat is the good method of dread. Also can I do my dreads and grow my hair .
I am going to be a deadlock model for a salon, so my dreads will be free but the woman who is doing them said that she is going to do a dread perm before backcombing. Do you think a dread perm is a good option if it will be free? This salon does not use wax and both the woman who is creating my dreads and her supervisor have had dreads in the past. ( I'm white and have thick curly hair that is about 7ish inches long)
Jack Fritzjunker I would recommend researching dread perming, the effect it has on the hair and the long term results and then deciding whether that is or is not what you personally want.
I have baby dreads using the two strand method. Im going on day two today. It itches!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I was wondering would you be so kind and give me instruction on how to maintain , tighten and etc ! Basically instructions on dreads lol. -Ariel
They will itch while they're new. Fortunately the irritation subsides once you start washing them and your head gets used to them. Across my channel you'll find videos covering a wide range of common dreadlock questions - as the questions get asked, the videos get made, so a lot of the most commonly asked questions have some answers around here :)My general recommendations however tend to learn towards a 'less is more' approach in that while there are different methods, techniques, tools and products out there, at the end of the day the underlying process towards self sufficient mature dreadlocks is always going to be the same and always going to require plenty of time and patience and in a lot of circumstances a lack of input will actually allow them to get the job done faster.
Aside from the video where I'm outside you're the first person to say that I'm not loud enough. I recommend you turn it up or get closer to your speakers bro...
thanks alot for all the videos man youve helped a ton keep up the good work God bless

Question:When do can use shampoo??
about root, it seems weak too, should i redread some of them who have weak root?
Thanks for responding so fast.
does anyone know if it makes a difference if your hair is already really curly, almost like black hair?
Yes. When starting freeform dreadlocks you begin when you stop brushing and conditioning the hair and swap shampoo.
once you started washing them. It takes some months before they really start to knot to the roots and tips.
Hey lazy dreads I really like the way your dreadlocks look man which method did you use

When you backcomb you aren't making the dreadlock, you're just knotting the hair into sections. Don't worry if it gets a little loose, as long as it's not completely washed out it'll still knot in the sections you've made.
Do you need a crochet eventually when having dreads? No matter what type of method you used?
Well... I've never owned a crochet hook..
I want to do this to my hair so bad!!!!😊😍
Thank you TruthTeller99.
Some will tell you as short as 4", but I think you'll have a much better chance of success if you hold out for 6" or more. The longer the hair = the more knots you'll be able to form initially = the better your chances are that they won't just wash straight out.
Hey bro, first off nice shirt! But i have twist n rip dreds, i like the natural/neglect better. So will tnr dredlocks turn to free form if i stop twisting them and just let them grow?
I found it really funny that you said "If you are watching this, it probably means that you're at least a teeny tiny bit interested in getting dread locks" lol
I've always found dreads a bit gross, but at the same time really interesting, and something I want to try.
Lazy Dreads Also, what method did you use to dread your hair? I'm just curious. :p
Backcomb method
Oh wow, awesome! :D I'm glad you enjoy my videos.
I'm watching this and I have almost no hair I'm just weird
Weird is welcome
Lol thought I was the only one
what technique should i do with afro hair about 6 inches at best? wanna go for the isaiah rashad look
How did you section your dreadlocks: fan, brick, or triangle
None of the above.Grid.And now they've combined all over the place so they fit no particular pattern.
So if u get grid is it better
It's not better, it's just what I have.
What method did you use?
I just started my dreads about 3 days ago I'm 15 in so far with the twist and rip method, and I'm happy the little guys been holding i well so far. Any tips on what I should use for my oily hair to dry it out!?
Jacob Buffetta It will take time for the dreadlocks to settle whether the hair is naturally oily or not. You'll need to try out different shampoos until you find the one that works best for you and your hair type.

Hey there. I started dreading my hair on Sunday and I'm doing it by myself using twist and rip. Honestly they suck. They're terrible. Like each one is loose from the root bout an inch. Is there a way I can fix that? Thanks:/
Just headwraps or search dread wrap maybe. The hats are called tams.
for longer hair I tend to recommend T&R.
great video bro :)
I started my dreadlocks off with the backcomb method.
Lazy Dreads is there a recommended length that hair needs to be before i begin the journey of the dread?
Hair Length Required For Dreadlocks
This was helpful.
Hello lady_red_dread. I myself don't post on there a whole lot at the moment because it tends to be pretty temperamental with me and although I can be patient with hair... not so much with computers!
Q: my hair was 5 inches Long i did twist n RIP method they feel good but will they stay in?
James Zavala Depends how efficient you are at 'Twist & Rip'.
Thank you!
You're welcome
can you shampoo your hair if your suing the neglect method?
Yes
how long do you reccomend your hair to be when you start using backomb
he said it in every video i have seen from him so far lol
Personally I think I'd get waaay too warm if I wore something on my head at night, but I don't think you'll have any problems with it affecting your roots.
Do you have any advice on free-forming a dreadlocks for a mohawk?
Jake Goldberg Not sure I've ever seen anyone try and freeform dreadlocks specifically for a mohawk.
Okay thankyou.
I was wanting to do it in those 2 weeks that were off so I had a whole day free to get it done.
mjlow123 8 weeks is certainly more than enough time.
what do you think about the crochet method?
How do you get them to stick up like jaden smiths
I would imagine Jaden Smith can afford to have someone individually stick up each clump of hair, should he so want! ^^
Short twisted dreads in afro textured hair will stick up in the same way.
I love the shirt!
Not entirely sure what you'd like me to do about that.
Hey there. So did I get this right now? If I wash my hair daily without any conditioner and after washing I dry it really well and just leave it, does it form me dreads? Should I also try to take parts of hair and rub them like you showed on method two?
Sheeptea It will result in locks forming eventually: Natural / Neglect / Freeform Dreadlocks Information
Hey I was hoping you could help me. I've been wanting to dread my hair for a while now and my hair is about 7-8 inches do I have to do anything to my hair first or can I just start dreading my hair? I was going to use the twist and rip method.
How to prepare for starting dreadlocks
Dreadlocks - Preparing For Dreads
Can I do the neglect option for about a month and then back comb it and will that at all speed up the process?
King Zuhri Simply put: unfortunately not. If you neglect the hair, it will start to knot up - you can't backcomb through knotted hair... well... you can - but it'll undo the knots that formed via the neglect (backcombing is still combing). So the backcombing will be uncomfortable as you'll have to backcomb through all the knots - this will end up just starting them over anyhow. I know some people neglect the hair a while to try and see where the hair naturally starts to section and then backcomb over the top, but it's not something I'd really recommend.
Thanks man :)
I am thinking about starting dreads but I have curly hair, will my dreads be curly?
Have you ever seen curly dreads? :p
Wait.
Ok my hair forms dreadlocks even when I brush it and condition it everyday
I have front forehead hair till my neck that's the length of my hair it took 1 yr to grow and it's black as I am from India ,so wat is the good method of dread. Also can I do my dreads and grow my hair .
vishnu pradeep It depends - at that length you could freeform them or start them via backcomb.
Lazy Dreads Okay thank you very much!
