According to Epicurus, for example, “Vain is the word of a philosopher which does not heal any suffering of man. For just as there is no profit in medicine if it does not expel the diseases of the body, so there is no profit in philosophy either, if it does not expel the suffering of the mind.” ‐Ref,A guide to the good life,William B.Irvine
I really appreciate so many of the sentiments covered here. They're so elegant and timeless in their simplicity. It matters not what we say or what we write as words are cheap. Doubly so these days. What matters is who we are, as the content of our characters is the only thing we ought to judge in ourselves or others. Everything else is meaningless in this context, generally speaking, IMHO. The character we demonstrate and the way we treat those around us matters most of all, at least I like to think so anyway. Thanks for sharing this thought provoking content.
The only thing we truly control are our own thoughts and actions. We can act to put out a narrative, but beyond that we don’t necessarily control the results.
Im currently reading your newest book lives of the stoics, I got it today, So far its amazing! Your an awesome inspiration that I hope to follow. Currently im making my own philosophical channel!
i love this video. Though, I literally do not believe that Epictetus merely smiled when his leg was broken. The story makes it's point, but I believe it's just romanticizing what really happened.
That’s the point of the Stoics moral compass. Four cardinal virtues, like the four cardinal directions, to form a truly metaphorical moral compass; Justice, Courage, Wisdom, and Moderation. The stoics argue that instead of being emotional knee-jerk reactionaries and reacting to everything that happens which is beyond our control, that we should be influenced to act and speak based on our moral compass. Instead of getting angry at something that happens or something that another person did or said we should ask ourselves, “What is the wisest thing for me to do in this situation?” Or, “What is the most just, fair, and equitable thing for me to do here?” Or, “What is the bravest thing I can do in this scenario?” Not “Oh they did a horrible thing! I don’t know what to do but I don’t care, I’m mad as hell and I’m not going to take it any more!” That attitude is like drinking poison and expecting the other person to die. Ambition without knowledge is like a boat on dry land; it goes nowhere. To not be jerked around or emotionally manipulated by things you don’t control, but to be motivated to act by your moral compass. That is the backbone/identity of a Stoic.

Kia ora/Hello Ryan, I've been watching your videos for a while now and have found them so valuable for my journey in stoicism and mental wellbeing. I was wondering if you knew of any indigenous or female accounts of stoics and stoicism? Or could you make a video of what you know of them? I'm going to research into this either way, but thought this would be a good starting point ☺️
so, it's ok to highlight ancient stoics pushing past physical pain and not being conquered by it, but it "trivializes" stoicism when an athlete does it? Kerri Strug won the Gold for her TEAM and her country. Many athletics study the stoics so they can perform at their best mentally and push past adversity.
@@jeangentry6656 yes, equating grit/perseverance to stoicism trivialises the latter. Studying Stoicism for athletic performance is missing the point of it entirely.
