Sorry for the loss of your best friend :( My Mom used to sing this to me as well when I was a young boy. I saw them perform it in 1976 when I turned 5. My Mom has passed on and this song brings tears to my eyes whenever I hear it. this song has a special place in my heart and now it should have a special place in yours. R.I.P. Cody and R.I. P. Mom. I have looked for this song for years. Thank you for posting it. It has brought back so many good memories. What a fun song. Well maybe not for the unicorn, but great fun for my generation.💜💜💜
There's a follow up song where God changes the unicorns into narwhals so that they don't drown. Quite possibly the cutest set of children's songs that I've ever heard.
Being of proud Irish ancestry , I first heard this tune on AFRTVS almost 45 years ago on the " Dr. DEMENTO SHOW " Still makes me crack up , whenever I hear this tune! Thanks RUclips !

I still remember those good days. Miss you Kenny and the innocent happy times. And thanks to all musicians who help us remember...especially the Irish Rovers for this crying old lady.

Years ago (1983), my buddies and I (JK, JD, and RF--all of us class of 86, 4th company) walked into a local pub on Long Island that was not very welcoming to any "strangers." Not wanting to show how nervous we were, one of my buddies walked up to the bar to order a pitcher of beer while I walked over to the juke box. I immediately saw this song and had to steady my hand to insert the quarter. Within seconds of this song playing, the locals welcomed us as one their own! One of my best memories of my plebe year!

My grandpa played this song at his funeral in 2016. Whenever I hear this song I think of him as the unicorn. A great member of the earth who is no longer on it.
I remember yrs ago our whole family use to watch there show every Sunday night on CBC , wow what a fantastic band back then and are still one of my very favorite Canadian home grown artists from Canada , they bring back so many memories every time I listen to one of there songs ,
My grandfather used to play this on a record, he was half irish half french canadien, he spoke french in montreal and identified as a French Canadien. However, hearing the stories of my grandfather playing this song shows to me how he valued his irish heritage, this song brings a tear to the eye of my mother and to myself as well. This song will have a special place in my heart and I hope to play it to my children and keep the Irish heritage important.
I can’t believe I just stumbled on this song, on St. Patrick’s Day no less! I was 6 years old when it was released. I’m 62 now and I can still sing along! Thank you for sharing this gem!
A wish that ever day for you Will be happy from the start And may you always have good luck And a song within your heart. Its just not St. Patricks day without this one of many favorites!
They had a gig in Aspen during the winter of 1965. I worked in the kitchen, I cannot remember the name of the restaurant/bar. They filled the place up after dinner.
This song was such a huge part of my childhood. Me and my dad used to listen to this on repeat- well, me forcing him to. It always hits that nostalgia spot.
This is one of my favorite songs in the whole world! I only play it on St. Patrick’s Day, but once in awhile I will sing it when it comes to mind. It’s so sweet!
Watched thier show on CBC when i was young. I bought my older sister tickets to see them around 1970. She appreciated, and thanked me till she passed. ❤ RIP sis.
My first book was Shel Silverstein's Where The Sidewalk Ends. So when my mom would read it to me she'd sing The Unicorn instead of just reading it because she absolutely loves The Irish Rovers. Now I can't read it without hearing it. I love this song.
Well now... I know it is Official...Today is my 65th BIRTHDAY, & ***SAINT PATRICK'S DAY***, I still Love this as someone has always made sure I heard it at least once a year on my Day... So I never forget that the Unicorns missed their boat but enjoyed the day Frolicing...(I see them now & them ...Thanks to G-Kids)... Best of Irish wishes to ALL... Thank you, Lyn& Dennis, this year... Y'all are first today.. ;)
I accidentally listed to this tonight and it transported me back to primary school in the 70s. I could see and smell everything . We all sang it in the assembly . I had totally forgot about it . Thank you . But now i realize ho old i am 😃
@@InspectorDeck probably is. Unicorns are real. Idk about dragons (though i wish i knew for sure as I love them) But anyway unicorns are around. The world is bigger than anyone can ever discover and unicorns fairies and mermaids are most likely all out there. Remember 'fairytales" had to come from somewhere someone had to see something at one time
over 7 decades and i loved this song and these guys could really make you LOL as they sang. Never heard anyone as great as these guys Thanks for sharing
My kids and grandkids loved *The Unicorn* and were raised listening to it. My grandson loved the Irish Rover song *Drunken Sailor* as well. Sometimes I find myself playing both of them just to warm myself with the memories.
I remember hearing this when i was a little kid on the radio. My daddy would sing it to me cause i loved unicorns. RIP daddy. Great memories and this song means alot to me. Thank you for sharing it with everyone including myself❤
For those of us 1960s and 1970s children, if you grew up in these decades, you probably rememer hearing clips of this wonderful song while watching the "Ark In The Park" segments on "The Ray Rayner Show" with Dr. Lester Fisher on WGN-TV out of Chicago, Ilinois, Seeing Ray with a three-foot long python curling around his arm was both a rather chilling yet hilarious moment!!! I miss those days! Bravo, The Irish Rovers!!! R.I.P., Ray Rayner, :'(
Yes, the arc in the park segment of the Ray Rayner Show, loved it and miss it. Him and Doctor Fischer introducing us young kids to all the animals. Great memories of my childhood. Thank you Irish Rovers for the song aaaannnnddd the memories!!!!!!!!!!!! still looking for my Unicorn!!
A Top 40 Pop station was reviewing hit songs from the year this was released. They expressed MASSIVE SURPRISE that a Celtic Folk Tune could be such a huge hit. But it WAS!!! Happy St. Patrick's Day, 2019.
I'm now 70 yes if age. My 6 year old granddaughter loves every unicorn product made. When visiting her I played this song. She loved it and memorized the lyrics. Me? It reminds me of better days when I was unaware of such a world as we have today.
This song always brings a smile to my face and at the same time a tear to my eye. I'm very sentimental about this song, although I don't know/remember why. I will be sharing it tomorrow on St. Patrick's Day. They just don't write songs like this anymore.
FYI, "The Unicorn" was written by Shel Silverstein, who was also the "Uncle Shelby" of childrens' books, and who also wrote "A Boy Named Sue" of Johnny Cash fame, while drawing cartoons for Playboy, and writing many of the Dr Hook songs such as "Freakin' at the Freaker's Ball" and "Cover of the Rolling Stone" and all sorts of other things for the Doctor Demento Show... The man was a genius.
Shel himself first recorded A BOY NAMED SUE, and if you ever get a chance to hear it you will note that Cash's later hit recording is a heavily sanitized version compared to Silverstein's original.
This was very popular back in the early 1960's. What I heard (as a kid) was, "Green alligators and long-necked geese, some honky-back carmels and some chimpanzees". I thought that was hilarious. Irish brogue, laddie.
My Mom and I used to listen to this song and sing it together. We loved it! I haven't heard it for many many years and it was wonderful to hear it again! I hadn't thought about it for a long time. It brought back some very pleasant memories!
This song made my childhood. In the 80’s. I’d stay up and go to bed right after they sang this song. And feel so sad for the unicorns playing and getting left behind in the rain. Literally so sad lol.
I still cried today when I listed once again to this song. I'm 65 now. I gota say, when I was very young some mean people would say I was a Unicorn on account of my large nose. Also I was rambunctious and still am so on two levels this is a sad song. I understand and feel for the Unicorn and I hope that I can maintain my belief in God so as not to miss the boat as our Unicorn did in this song. HEY, I'm no ham and I'm not a religious zealot...I'm just telling about my feelings here.
+PeterDad60 This song always has place in my heart. It's so sad and I can't help getting misty when I hear it. I hope you know by now that being called a unicorn is a beautiful compliment. As unicorns are a symbol of purity, rarity and can only be seen by the pure of heart.
My grandpa passed away from cancer in December of 2018. This was one of his favorite songs. On rainy days when I was little we would listen to this song. He raised me. Miss you, Papa
This takes me back to when we only had CBC and a few other crappy Cdn channels as a elem school aged kid... their show was one of the best to pick from every week for our family. Their music was simple, clean, and ear candy to me then... and now :)
I saw the Irish Rovers in the McIntyre arena in Schumacher, Ontario, when I was only 14. I’m 68 now and still remember the concert. Even have the entire band’s autographs stowed away in my trunk. Great band!
this is one of me favorite bands.....because they're from Ireland and so am I...I was born in Belfast...but now I live in America!! hearing these fellas it's a wee bit like home.
oldmanrocker Im an Irish American & I regret not looking into Irish history or doing one of those ancestry things. I do have 2 sisters that learned Irish dancing. Buffalo,NY has a lot of Irish people. ST. Patricks Parade is huge here, sometimes its still cold. Buffalo is known as a drinking city. Its true some winters Lake Erie dumps 10-12 feet of snow. I like 4 season city even if summer is only 3 months. It is cool having Canada as a neighbor & Niagara Falls is close. It does suck we have reputation for all that snow. That 1977 Blizzard started it all, the country was calling Buffalo snow capital of the world. it was a bad storm schools were closed for 3 weeks. Im not sure if folks still stay away from Buffalo. 1 good thing Buffalo Bills fans are loyal, sellout almost every game. The Fans are crazy drinking beer at 8am. Theres about 20-30 arrests at each game. Most arrests are underage drinkers. 1 16oz beer is $ 8.00. I mean how can you control 80,000 fans.
Emma Leanne My sisters and I grew up listening to them because our mom had their albums. Ah, fond memories of good Irish music on St. Patty's Day. Our mom's name was Patricia...or Pat.
I listen to this every year on st. Patrick’s Day I love this song sooooo much ☘️☘️☘️ my st. Patrick’s Day wouldn’t be complete without the song!!! Happy st. Patrick’s Day to all.
Loretta Harrington It sucks in Buffalo, NY some years ST. PATS PARADE gets cancelled because of all the snow we get. Even April 2nd we still have snow on the ground. Its crazy every winter Lake Erie dumps 10-12 feet. I swear we only get visitors because Niagara Falls is close. It all started with 1977 Blizzard we got 19 feet of snow & City & Schools were closed for 3 weeks. That's why our City is called SNOW CAPITAL OF USA. 77 Blizzard people were afraid of us like people were afraid of the movie JAWS. To make it worse we have to wait till July to enjoy the Lake because the Lake frezzes over every year. Unlucky City all that snow 4 lost Superbowls NY Taxes. Also were known as a big drinking City. Bars are open till 4am. I think that because we have a lot of IRISH Folks living here

Lyrics
A long time ago, when the earth was still green
And there were more kinds of animals than you've ever seen
They'd run around free while the earth was being born
But the loveliest of all was the unicorn
There was green alligators and long-necked geese
Some humpty-backed camels and some chimpanzees
Some cats and rats and elephants, but sure as you're born
The loveliest of all was the unicorn
Now god seen some sinnin' and it gave him pain
And he says, "stand back, I'm going to make it rain"
He says, "hey, brother Noah, I'll tell you what to do
Build me a floating zoo"
And take some of them green alligators and long-necked geese
Some humpty-backed camels and some chimpanzees
Some cats and rats and elephants, but sure as you're born
Don't you forget my unicorn"
Old Noah was there to answer the call
He finished up making the ark just as the rain started fallin'
He marched in the animals two by two
And he called out as they went through
"Hey, Lord"
I've got your green alligators and long-necked geese
Some humpty-backed camels and some chimpanzees
Some cats and rats and elephants, but Lord, I'm so forlorn
I just can't see no unicorn"
Then Noah looked out through the driving rain
Them unicorns was hiding, playing silly games
Kicking and splashing while the rain was pouring
Oh, them silly unicorns
There was green alligators and long-necked geese
Some humpty-backed camels and some chimpanzees
Noah cried, "close the doors 'cause the rain is pourin'
And we just can't wait for no unicorns"
The ark started movin', it drifted with the tide
Them unicorns looked up from the rock and they cried
And the waters came down and sort of floated them away
And that's why you'll never see a unicorn, to this very day
You'll see green alligators and long-necked geese
Some humpty-backed camels and some chimpanzees
Some cats and rats and elephants, but sure as you're born
You're never gonna see no unicorn
Thanks for the lyrics.

Brings back memories my dad used to play this song when I was a kid
I wish kids these days were into music like this ❤️🙏
Have loved these guys since the 60’s. Saw them in concert. They have so much fun entertaining people. Like to listen to them now when I’m crafting
I'm 70 and we did a school play to this song. I was one of the Humpty back camels
Love your story!
my goodness how old is this song?
I can’t believe I just stumbled on this song, on St. Patrick’s Day no less! I was 6 years old when it was released. I’m 62 now and I can still sing along! Thank you for sharing this gem!
Me too. Aussie here
A wish that ever day for you
Will be happy from the start
And may you always have good luck
And a song within your heart.
I Remember This In The 60's Now I Am 68, Always Loved This Song, Happy St. Patrick's Day To You 👍👍💯💯❤❤
I remember a family reunion when this came on the radio, and suddenly a hundred cousins were singing along.
This is such a sweet song, so full of goodness and cheer and joy!
Y'all are first today.. ;)
Happy Birthday!
@@deborahdulworth191 Thank You Much...Keep looking for them Silly Unicorns... ;)
I accidentally listed to this tonight and it transported me back to primary school in the 70s. I could see and smell everything . We all sang it in the assembly . I had totally forgot about it . Thank you . But now i realize ho old i am 😃
Famous last words:
Unicorn to the dragon: "There's no way they'd leave without us, right?"
UNICORN DRAGON
Fu k
This little joke made me chuckle, thanks. I wish it was a true story.
@@InspectorDeck probably is. Unicorns are real. Idk about dragons (though i wish i knew for sure as I love them) But anyway unicorns are around. The world is bigger than anyone can ever discover and unicorns fairies and mermaids are most likely all out there. Remember 'fairytales" had to come from somewhere
someone had to see something at one time
😂
over 7 decades and i loved this song and these guys could really make you LOL as they sang. Never heard anyone as great as these guys
Thanks for sharing
My children grew up with this song. Imagination awesome. And Irish we believe in fairies. Thank you
The Irish music is the best music of all 🇮🇪 🟧⬜ UP ARMAGH!!!!
Used to watch these guys on tv when I was a kid. The 70’s were great. 👍🏻🎵🎶🐱🐭🐘and 🦄
My kids and grandkids loved *The Unicorn* and were raised listening to it. My grandson loved the Irish Rover song *Drunken Sailor* as well. Sometimes I find myself playing both of them just to warm myself with the memories.
Grew up listening to the Rovers and went to see them live, absolute joy. 😁🥰🦄👏👍💖🙏
The Irish Rovers gave the best concert I ever saw. I will never forget how much fun it was. The audience gave them a standing ovation at the end.
R.I.P., Ray Rayner, :'(
Yep - WGN-TV channel 9 in the 60's. What days those were.
This is what we need to be showing to our new generation!
Thank you uncle Don for bringing this song to us. Hope you're catching all the fish you can with grampa up in heaven. Until we meet again.
Probably one of the most under rated song ever. I remember listening to this on the Ray Rayner Show during the early 70s in Chicago.
And would you believe it- Dr. Lester Fisher from Lincoln Park Zoo just turned 100?!
@@ChicagoPianistRichardSladek Good memory. Yes, they always played this song as the intro to that segment of the show :) All those old shows were fun.
It isn't a Celtic Folk Tune LOLOL Shel Silverstein is Jewish - lived in Chicago USA
Chris Mulwee OMG WISH I could hear THAT one!! LOL :-)
+tdelecia It's actually on youtube. Silverstein also wrote a sequel to A Boy Named Sue (also in youtube), which ends in incest.
he is the best , in my books .as a musician I love his work .Also his childrens books , thank you Johnnie Vaughn
ozus flyer do people still bully kids with red hair???? my sister had red hair. she never got bullied maybe cause she went to Catholic School
It brought back some very pleasant memories!
kinds makes me sad, this sweet little song. Probably because of all the good memories of singing it with mom..just like you.
I used to listen to this album with my mom as well- also happy memories. Me father, he was orange, and me mother she was green...
How could anyone not love this song?
You would need a heart of stone.to dislike stuff like this. Same goes for Puff The Magic Dragon.and so.on
This song made my childhood. In the 80’s. I’d stay up and go to bed right after they sang this song. And feel so sad for the unicorns playing and getting left behind in the rain. Literally so sad lol.
One of the great Irish songs of all time written by a nice Jewish boy, Shel Silverstein, of course.
LOL! Seriously, Shel is a GREAT songwriter!!
Yeah, but Shel was born on St. Patrick's Day; and everyone is Irish on St. Patrick's Day. It's a FACT...look it up!🤣🤣
dewey daugherty lol Nice try. He was born on Sept 25. But I really wanted that to be true! Really I did!!!!
@@Haroldbeavis1969 it was worth a try! The Irish are also known for stretching the truth...so at least I got that goin for me.🤣☘
dewey daugherty Lol!!! So now I kinda wish we were having this conversation at a pub somewhere and laughing it up over a pint or two. Well done!!!!
+PeterDad60 thanks for sharing your feelings
+PeterDad60 This song always has place in my heart. It's so sad and I can't help getting misty when I hear it. I hope you know by now that being called a unicorn is a beautiful compliment. As unicorns are a symbol of purity, rarity and can only be seen by the pure of heart.
WHAT IS "RAMBUNCTIOUS" MR SENIOR? 😂
My dad. Sing this song to me.
Got the same problem small face and ears but big old nose
I'm 40 now, and one of my earliest memories, if not THE earliest is my parents playing this song for my on the record player.
I needed this song today to renew my soul 🙂
This song always makes me feel happy, like a little kid. I'll always love this song. God bless you Irish Rovers! ❤❤❤
Their music was simple, clean, and ear candy to me then... and now :)
My grandma had this song on her jukebox in the basement! All of the counsins know it!!! I love this song and miss you grandma! ❤️
I saw the Irish Rovers in the McIntyre arena in Schumacher, Ontario, when I was only 14. I’m 68 now and still remember the concert. Even have the entire band’s autographs stowed away in my trunk. Great band!
Going to introduce this song in kids Sunday school, I think they will love it.
this is one of me favorite bands.....because they're from Ireland and so am I...I was born in Belfast...but now I live in America!! hearing these fellas it's a wee bit like home.
oldmanrocker Im an Irish American & I regret not looking into Irish history or doing one of those ancestry things.
My sister, not long in America, got homesick seeing them sing Irish ballads on the Virginian TV series.
Belfast isn't Ireland.
They're mostly Canadian, but of Irish descent (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Irish_Rovers)
@@carld.goldin9734 god bless Ulster
Great song Great group 👍
I've grown up listening to the Irish Rovers through my grandparents, and I'm only 17. This will always be my favorite. (:
Emma Leanne My sisters and I grew up listening to them because our mom had their albums. Ah, fond memories of good Irish music on St. Patty's Day. Our mom's name was Patricia...or Pat.
Emma Leanne kyle
My father would sing this to me as a child. Every time I hear it i think of him.such a great song
Woke up with the old tune in my head and here it is! As in the days of Noah so shall the coming of the Lord be! Today is July 18, 2019.
My Husband would sing this song to me when we were courting and then later after we married, he sang this song to both our wee ones!
My dear mom loved this song
I've listened to this song forever! God bless the Irish rovers!
I haven't heard this for decades! A great memory from my youth.
I listen to this every year on st. Patrick’s Day I love this song sooooo much ☘️☘️☘️ my st. Patrick’s Day wouldn’t be complete without the song!!! Happy st. Patrick’s Day to all.
Me too. What a way to celebrate March 17, 2019!
👍👍👍 you took the words out of my mouth
All year long
Loretta Harrington It sucks in Buffalo, NY some years ST. I think that because we have a lot of IRISH Folks living here
I prefer "Who put the overalls in Mrs Murphy's chowder"!
