    Awesome video!! I grew up in the 80s, born in 1981. In high school in the 90s, while everyone was wearing bush and nirvana shirts, I was wearing Cinderella, Dokken and Ratt shirts... Needless to say, I was the black sheep lol. I will argue till the day I die, that the 80s was a time of sacred guitar playing and the best rock music ever.

    A major contributor to the guitar tone of the 80’s was the Rockman RockModules and headphone amp by Tom Scholz of Boston. The band’s signature guitar, distortion and chorus/clean sound were so unique and sought after that Scholz created a company and released gear that had that sound. ZZ Top were some of the first bands to use it. The album Hysteria by Def Leppard was recorded using only Rockman modules. Scholz pretty much gave the 80’s that boosted mid sound that you hear of that era. Danger Zone by Kenny Loggins is another example. I don’t know for sure if the Rockman was used but you can hear what the tone is going for. You should look into the Rockman stuff and you’ll be blown away of the rabbit hole! Neil Schon of Journey also used the Rockman! Great episode man!!

    • @dongpedroyi
      @dongpedroyi 4 года назад +5

      The Rockman gear is part of an obscure and elusive part of Rock history that not many people are aware of because of its short-lived commercial success before the digital processors' invasion. Not many known Rock guitarists have a degree in electronics engineering from MIT like Tom Scholz so it is more than reasonable to assume that he knew what he was doing when he designed those effects - and probably the one and only true competitor against the BOSS pedals. I am in the (slow) process of either building a replica or pay the price tag for an original Rockman. It is interesting that guitarists are going back to the simplicity of vintage analog pedalboards and ditching the 80's stacks of digital racks but nobody is replicating the Tom Scholz stuff except for the Japanese startup company named GOAT.

So many great talented tasty players came out of the 1980s its a whos who of killer players, sure there was some goofy hair and clothes and songs (for sure) BUT there was also AMAZING guitar players who stepped up their playing level and many players and kids wanted to learn to shred and rip it up more.... such a cool ERA

    God I LOVE the tone of a good 80s guitar! No other decade comes close because of all the top guitarist just trying to out do the other guy. They may have been friends but it was straight up competition. Steve Vai didn't sound like Eddie Van Halen, Randy Rhoads didn't sound Tony Iommi, Tracii Guns didn't sound anything like Slash etc! They all had there own voice and sound. George Lynch always talked about the search for the perfect tone and these guys did just that.
    Anyone searching for some solid modern hair metal bands check out Loud N Nasty, Crashdiet, Sister Sin, Sister, De La Cruz, Santa Cruz, Jailbait, Foxey, Crazy Lixx, Salems Lott, Wildstreet, Gunner, Frenchkiss, Panzer Princess, Redlight Attraction, Reckless Love, Peepshow/States of Panic. Paul shares a lot of stories about Eddie when he would come to Kramer for a visit. Eddie would come in and clear a bench to tinker with guitars while having a cigarette and Heineken’s lol! Another thing Eddie liked was Paul giving him several 500k pots with treble bleeds! He also says Eddie’s a really nice guy and his wife Valerie Bertinelli at the time was really a sweet person. Anyway, glad to see Kramer back again and fortunate to know Paul!

    Nothing those adds they shilled for even came close to what they used.
    Aside from playing the key of name your "guitar hero" and dive bombs. I like you opinion but lets be 10000% honest about it. Seymour Duncan has a like tons of winds for each EvH , mick mars, so on an so forth . you would spend a fortune to get each one custom wound for each song. 80s metal is vastly superior for four reasons: 1. The note structure was positive and "happy", with actual strings and melody being allowed to ring out. Today's metal is a bung of brainless chugging that all sounds the same. When a band came on the radio in the 80s, you always knew who it was because they actually played melody and sang. Todays' metal is a bunch of angry growling and chugging, and it all sounds the same. You literally cannot tell bands apart, and every one of you sound like lazy Metallica rip-offs. 2. I'm 54 and grew up in the 80s and had my own garage bands. We were all covering Crue, Ozzy, Priest, and Van Halen, stuff you could sing along to and dance to. And we sounded 10 times better than today's thrash crap. 3. The music itself was happy, melodic, and fun, and we had girls mobbing our practice sessions in basements. Hear that, thrashers? REAL GIRLS! 4. 80s fashion was wild and even comical, but it still looked great and still looked clean. Even us longhaired, leather jacket/parachute pants/hightops-wearing metalheads looked like we showered regularly. Fashion tip - women HATE facial hair. ALL of them. There's SO many reasons we were getting laid compared to you just watching porn.

    One brand of guitars you forgot to mention that was quite popular: BC Rich. See for example Poison. Even though BC Rich guitars are more associated with Black or Death Metal these days, a vintage BC Rich Mockingbird from the 80s will absolutely do the trick.

    I still have my solid state peavy amp and holoflash finish '91 Bolt Nighthawk (Kramer stagemaster). It was built from leftover Kramer parts after they went bankrupt. Guitars were finished by Wayne Bolt in Pennsylvania in the early 90s, the absolute pinnacle of hair metal guitar technology... a year later everyone else was wearing dirty sweaters and playing beat up fender mustangs trying to be grunge uggh..... I even played that flashy hair metal guitar in a southern rock band for awhile, I looked really out of place lol. Metal never dies 😁🤘

      @@jessehoopes7042 Plus Boss pedals are easier to change the battery. The MXRs are a pain if you use batteries. Decent pedals but the Boss would've been a better way to go. I just like how there's no tone control on the MXR. More simple.

    Thanks, your playing is awesome, folks !! 🔥🙌🏼

    • @AudaciousAce1989
      @AudaciousAce1989 2 года назад +1

      From what I understand, the pro mod dk24 is an awesome platform. But not for what you’re looking for. Tremelo cant dive bomb without throwing guitar out of tune and the pickups sound too weak for that 80’s metal sound. So if you want to dump hundreds on mods + the thousand for the dk24 it will probably be a DREAM. Id go for the charvel San Dimas the Kramer for 80’s goodness. Just my opinion and speculation though. Always do your own homework xD

    1:45 This statement makes me want to break shit. The new Kramer guitars are complete rubbish next to the vintage ones. The only ones that came close were the US made Gibson tributes, these over sea models are nothing like the originals in terms of their necks, tones, and overall feel. I have two Voyagers and I played one at my old shop, Sam Ash, and it was nothing like the originals.

    George Lynch claims he used Dollar SCreamer but his guitar to me sounds like SD-1 into JCMs
    Also, you forgot to mention DoD 250 and MXR dist plus.
