It's absolutely devastating that Eddie died. But, I think it's really cool how the guitar community really came together on this. Everybody was immediately inspired to do something and I really think his death will usher in a new age of music.

I agree totally devastating.. but i feel a lot of youtubers are using eddies passing as a way of getting views ...because a lot of them never posted anything van halen related ... whereas others have literally praised ed as a god for ever

Before Eddie passed away I had never heard him speak I never heard any interviews or anything just heard the sweet noise that came from the amp. Yet I still feel like I lost a dear friend.
Eddie Van Halen showed me that a poor half-Indonesian guy like me could be an amazing guitar player, he is a huge inspiration for me. I miss him already...

Eddie is my hero. His music has accompanied me throughout my life. I play guitar because of Eddie. I own an EVH Frankie, a Peavey Wolfgang and an EVH Star. I have 3 pairs of EVH high top sneakers and numerous tshirts. My lovely family have made me EVH striped cakes for most of my birthdays. His playing was astounding, but it was his ability to play so effortlessly whilst jumping, sliding and dancing across the stage with the biggest grin fixed to his face. He was a true original. The master. He is greatly missed.
thats awesome man, yea its been tough to lose eddie a bummer to say the least. this past july i bought the white kramer 1984 reissue, i'm glad i did, now i have something to remember eddie everyday play it and pay homage to him
It's Eddie's fault I'm a guitar player! 9 years old in early 1984, I saw the Jump video and when Eddie started into his solo, between the impossibly cool looking guitar, and his infectious "look how much fun I'm having" smile, my fate was sealed; I MUST learn to play guitar! Thank you Eddie Van Halen!
If it weren't for Eddie Van Halen, Jimi Hendrix, Randy Rhoads, and my dad I wouldn't have ever picked up a guitar. The first time I heard EVH as a child changed my life forever.
Eddie used the Variac to take the 120 volt AC wall current down to around 85 to 90 volts which kinda starves out the voltage supply to the grids & heaters of the preamp & output tubes & results in that more loose, slightly mushy compressed, snarly sound we all love. Early on he used to lie & say he actually raised the 120 volts to 140 volts which caused many guitar players chasing his tone to fry their transformers, filter caps & other components. Dave Friedman actually had his hands on Eddie's Super Lead & said it was bone stock except for the addition of a higher value cathode capacitor on the bright channel preamp tube which was added by the legendary Jose Arredondo to give it a bit more bass (and as a result, a touch more gain). The second way Edward controlled his overall output volume was that he would use a dummy load box after the Marshall head, in effect making the Marshall a preamp for the entire system. The output of the load box would then run through his effects which would then be sent to the input stage of a power amplifier, most often an H & H V800 MOS-FET model. The speaker output of his Marshall was set at 8 ohms and the dummy load box resistance was set to 20 ohms to help ease the strain of the amplifier being run at full volume. Eddie also only used Sylvania 6CA7 power tubes. These are the main ingredients in his tonal recipe. Most of my big-name fellow amp builder/modder friends agree that from the Fair Warning album on Eddie had Jose add in his "Jose Master Volume" diode clipping mod which accounts for the difference in gain & aggression heard after VH1. At one point in recording Fair Warning Eddie possibly turned up his Variac over 120 volts because his Marshall caught on fire. Aside from all of this, Eddie sounded like Eddie no matter what he played through. The real magic of EVH was in his soul & his fingers were the vehicle for that magic. Rest In Paradise Eddie Van Halen!!!
I have read and listened to lectures on EVH and this is the most outstanding of all.
The load box was a Palmer PDI-03, also used by Def Leppard and others. It has analog speaker simulated outs along with not simulated outs with separate volume control to send the signal to power amp(s). The term "brown sound" was derived from a problem at city's power grid giving lower power to homes at night and the lights were dimmed and instead of bright yellow (back then) they had a brownish color. They called it "Brownout" instead of "Blackout" (no power and no lights at all). So, lower power to guitar amp led to Brown sound!

The Marshall is the only amp that matters. EVH and Peavey aren't even close to a brown sound. Just high gain bullshit.

I am sorry for all our loss, but as someone else mentioned, I feel for Dagan who recorded this just a week before, and has the sparkle of a fan who doesn't know what a mere week brings as change.
I really hope such good mood will return, even though many are mourning now. I can't think of anything else more vivid when I think of Eddie but his lovely smirk.

Brother Eddie would have loved your enthusiasm and you showed for the instrument in this video... Eddie just loved his instrument through and through to the core, I mean you could see his enthusiasm anytime there was a guitar around in any sort of video of him he would slowly end up picking it up and at least noodling on it, subconsciously even. he was truly an amazing amazing guitarist and will never be topped... He also seemed like such a nice guy and I know he was a family man and loved his son Wolfgang greatly... Whenever he talked about Wolfgang it always made me think about how I think about my son and how he is the light in my darkness, and really the reason I'm alive. We love you Eddie and you will always be in our hearts, rest in peace up in the great gig in the sky my friend...

Thanks for the tribute, guys. At the moment, thats all we can do and as long as we remember him, he will always be with us in a way. I really wish i had gotten a chance to see him live, but I always worked and never went to concerts as a kiddo. Ya picked the right guy to do the video. He makes all the videos not only informative, but enjoyable to watch

Van Halens stage shows were EPIC! Even with Roth forgetting to sing,... a lot! You have to be a master musician to play with a showman like Dave. Love them all! Where have all the good times gone!
Fantastic tribute. What a tremendous loss. You are very talented and your love for EVH really shows. Very comprehensive gear guide. Missing, however, is the Steinberger guitar with the trans trem which allowed the entire guitar to be drop tuned. Most notably used during the intro to "Summer Nights", from the 5150 album. And I believe he did play a Gibson Les Paul on occasion and of course, he plays a nylon string on "Spanishe Fly".
I love Andertons TV but they totally bollocksed up their sounds like evh. This is how it should have been. An amazing tribute.

His old Marshall Superlead was indeed stock for the first few albums, with an attenuator between it and the speaker cabinet purely to not make the studio's microphones just give up on life. If I remember it right, the sound engineer actually tried to "mask" the effect the cheap attenuator had on his tone as much as possible in editing, and he didn't use the attenuator live because there was no need to quieten anything down.
The only way to get the same tone out of a Superlead without post-production is basically to turn the amp to stadium volume, with no attenuation. Hence the modding and the different amps - they were all attempts to get that early tone at less than lethal volumes.
RIP Eddie, you were an inspiration, a legend, and a major cause of tinnitus.

The way he signs off is the tone of voice we should still use when talking about Eddie. It's sad that he's gone, but I don't think he'd want people to slow him down. He always had that smile when he was playing or even just talking about guitar because he knew how many people were musicians because of him.
Can you imagine that feeling? The rush of knowing that not only do you get to do what you love more than anything, but that it made you a part of history. Having a lasting effect on the way an instrument and all it's accessories developed. Being the catalyst for a large part of the pop culture landscape. When you think "cool, 80s metal shred guitar solo" it's because of Eddie. Imagine being Mickey Mouse and Mozart at the same time; a cultural icon and a focal point in music history.

Eddie changed guitar players forever. I remember when their debut album was released every guitar player went nuts, he was the best ever.
I've watched this over and over and over. You're enthusiasm and knowledge is incredible and damn I wish I could play like you. I hope you become rich and famous because it's humbling to watch someone with so much love and devotion for what they do .

Eddie was the first guitarist I looked up to when I was a kid and he’s still one of my guitar heroes, I was devastated when I heard about his passing but I’m still grateful for all the music he’s given us over the years and for helping me become the guitarist I am today, so thank you so much Eddie We’ll miss you greatly now go give heaven an Eruption of its own

This is the second time Ive watched this video, the first being when Eddie had just died and I broke down crying. How Dagen held it together was heartbreaking. I bet it took afew takes! Eddie is the only "celebrity" that actually devestated me on hearing of them passing. I think you showed real class the way you handled this, and you didnt monetise the video.

My first time seeing this channel. I was able to see the genuine heartbreak at the beginning of this video and the genuine love , respect and admiration you had for the man in the following 45 minutes. Very well done gents. RIP EVH... still hurts to write that...
He got the Shark Destroyer of Chris Holmes of WASP....Painted it with burgandy Schwin Bike paint [originally white] and had a Dimarzio super Distortion in the Bridge.Also the Bumble Bee had a Floyd Rose on it but without the fine tuners. Those EVH striped guitars have a 12''to 16'' radius neck Jumbo stainless fret wire. I have the Black and White striped EVH and has a Wolfgang pick up in it, same specs as the Bumble bee, Circles, and red 'n' white stripe [other than the dummy pick up and no pickguard].Just a bit of info' that might help with the specs of any potential buyer of EVH gear....Fan since 1979, saw them supporting Sabbath, Newcastle city hall and 84 Donington Monsters of Rock festival.
Actually Chris Holmes's destroyer and the shark were 2 different guitars. Eddie and Chris did buy them at the same shop at the same time. He also borrowed Chris's destroyer for the Women and Children First album because he thought the chunk he cut out of his with a chainsaw to get the shark look destroyed the tone of the guitar. Although the shark is on the album cover, just not the album. The only album the shark was on is the first album

Nice tribute! He was my hero since the first album and like many of you we all carried on the VH flame through thick and thin. When Van Halen owned MTV in 1984 it was like our team finally winning the Super Bowl! Im still devastated living in a world without Ed. Rip brother.

you may not sound exactly like EVH but you've managed to put your style and the influence eddie had on you together to create a killer tone
I believe that all guitarists use the sounds of the artists they like and blend what they know together to create a unique tone that they like best
we can't bring back a musician who's died but we can honour their legacy in many ways
many of our favourite rock / metal musicians would have drawn their inspiration from Eddie and without him some of the popular metal bands from the 90's may not have been around if Eddie wasn't a musician

I ordered my 50w EL34 head and matching 2x12 cab two days before we lost King Edward. It is a fabulous amplifier. Last year, I pre-ordered the 5150 Standard Stealth guitar. It is a fabulous guitar. The two paired together are absolutely perfect. My other guitars are Gibsons, SG Standard and Les Paul Trad Pro 2. They love the EL34 head just as much.

Eddie also started me down the road to guitar infamy! When I heard VH1 as a kid I was blown away. "Eruption" literally short circuited my brain. I learned to play because of that album and that man. Over the years I was further influenced by the late great Randy Rhoads and the amazing Jason Becker but Eddie was, and always will be, number one for me. Its hard to believe I'll never hear any of my three guitar heroes play again, but hardest of all is knowing Eddie is gone. It still shocks and upsets me a year and a half later. RIP Eddie. Love you man.

To me, the main song he used wah on was Top Of The World, notably the solo. I can't recall much else. But that one solo was really cool.
Common miss I hear basically everyone do when playing ain't talkin about is when guys always play the triplet from the A to the open G. It alternates between a triplet feel to a single hit where the echo repeat carries the second note, he's just vibing it out. Then for the C descend to B, G, he kicks the flange in and out. Little devil in the detail stuff. The minor detailed stuff that made Eddie so great.
