- Okay, so I'm a total Honda Rebel 300 girl. Like, that's all I've ever known. But I decided to switch it up and rent a Harley Davidson Sportster Iron 883 and a KTM Duke 390 from GoGo Rental to see what all the fuss is about! We cruised around the beautiful Hawaiian roads and put these bikes to the test. Wanna see if I survived? 😂
Big thanks to @gogorental for hooking me up with these motorcycles for this video!
This collab was awesome! I had an amazing experience and would definitely rent from them again!

Only thing I can say.... You never go wrong with a Sportster!!! They been around since 1957 for a reason!!!!!!! Great stuff!!!!
I bought my first Harley three weeks ago. After riding it for about 400 miles I can't believe I waited so long to own one. The ride is so comfortable I feel like I could ride all day. When I'm not riding my Harley I'm thinking about riding it. A bit of advice - if you decide to purchase an HD I'd encourage you to look at used bikes. You can usually pick up a great bike at a good price and best of all, it will probably have lots of upgrades from the previous owner. Mine had all kinds of goodies that I didn't have to pay for. Safe riding!
I totally understand the feeling! I was so shocked with how much I ended up liking it! Thanks for the tip about buying used, if I do plan on getting one it’ll probably be used 😊 it’s sad the traditional sportster models are discontinued🥲
Something interesting to consider is a motorcycles power to weight ratio. Divide the horsepower by the weight of the motorcycle to see how much horsepower is made per pound of the motorcycles weight. The higher the ratio, the faster it is. For example the rebel 300 is about 27hp and 365lbs, so its Power:weight is.073. The sportster 883 is 53hp and 545lbs, it's Power:weight is .097. That is a 25% increase(divide the rebels P:W by the 883's P:W). The rc390 has a P:W of .116 which is 17% higher than the 883. So the rc390 is actually the faster bike of these 2 in the vid.
Torque is what gets you moving. HP is torque x RPM. Let an engine rev higher and it will have more HP.
There's way more torque in the Harley. Especially if she's doing day to day riding
Torque is the huge difference in this comparison.
I love this nerd shit right here ❤
You made a very smart decision by mastering your riding skills on a small displacement, light weight motorcycle.
What helped me, when I began riding again after many years, and on bigger bikes, was the video series, "Ride Like A Pro," produced by a former "motor cop." Every bike is easy to ride at faster speeds, it's the low-speed riding that can be tricky, and that's what he teaches. It's easy if you do it properly - no matter how big and heavy the bike is - and practice to gain confidence. Other than that, and unlike your Honda, Harleys have low-rev-loving v-twin engines: Upshift! - you and the bike will be happier.
Thank you so much for sharing this!! I definitely want to improve my riding capabilities at low speeds. & thank you for the note about shifting 😅 I feel a bit silly now not taking advantage of the full power but I think my nerves of riding a new bigger bike got the best of me 🫠
Big +1 to the ride like a pro course. Also Officer Robert Simmons at "be the boss of your motorcycle". They totally changed the way I ride and helped me build my riding confidence. The techniques they teach scale to any bike and are super transformative for how you handle motorcycles.
This is my first video I've seen of yours and it felt very genuine unlike the big channels. I learned on a 84 moto guzzi v650sp, Italian standard type cruiser, that I borrowed from my father-in-law. I have a suzuki vstrom 800de and a suzuki savage. Both are very different and very enjoyable for different types of riding.
Thank you so much for the comment!😊 & the bikes you mentioned sound really cool, I hope I get to try them out one day
I just traded up for the Scout 101. Harley Sound so nice but I like the Indian look and feel better. No disrespect to HD, they make some beauties
Nice!! I really like the sound of a Harley but I totally agree that the Indian look is awesome. I’d really like to try one out one day
The Iron 883, 1200, and 48 are a ton of fun and I’m a big Sportster fan in general for around town and the once in a while longer ride.
As many will say though, if you take those longer rides on the open highway, as another comment said, the Street Bob, Softtail Standard, or ST will be the best overall choices IMO. You’ll have more top end power and comfort.
But, there are a whole lot of great deals on the older air cooled EVO Sportys out there and if you don’t need the additional power and comfort I’d jump one with zero hesitation. Great low end torque and tons of fun!
Great video and glad to see someone taking a smart approach to exploring new bikes. Ride safe!
Fiance did a 6000 mile trip with a 48 no problems. Obviously not as comfy as the street Bob or softtail but engine wise it's good on the interstate.
Hi! Thanks so much for the comment! I do hope to go on a long ride somewhere in the states so I’ll be sure to check those bikes out 😊 but for general riding, I like the sportster. I’m a big fan of the traditional look (sad it’s discontinued). What do you think of the new liquid cooled one?
@@RidewithRea I'll try to make this short and simple and not an essay.
1. If youre upgrading to the sportster, the 1200 would be perfect. The 883 would be like you're upgrading to a rebel 500. And the 1200 sportster would be right in between 500 and 1100 rebel.
2. Sportster engine is most reliable of all Harley engines and easier to work on. The new liquid cooled ones have a lot of problems.
3. Sportsters are fun and look real good.
The sportster is the best choice. Despite what people who just want to rock throttle say, you wont outgrow for years, unless you outgrow the desire to improve. A bigger bike isn't different. It's just more.
You definitely need to shift more ... Harley's are low rpm, torque bikes.
😅😅 yes I feel silly for not shifting more. I think I was just nervous being on a new bike lol
A little tip is to always look at the slope of the road first and do your turn up the slope. Then if you can't make the turn you can back down the slope and you wont need to use your strength. The same idea works when you park on a hill, always face uphill so you can back up downhill.
Ah yes😅 something I should’ve remembered from the MSF course haha but dang it’s hard to judge how steep of a slope you’re on until it’s too late 🫠 but thank you for the tip! Totally makes sense
The 2024 Honda Shadow Phantom would be the perfect bike for you. It's shaft drive and fuel injection makes it very low maintenance and has good old Honda reliability.
Oh yes! I’ve seen photos of that one back when I was looking at bikes to get 😊 great suggestion!
This is dope! Trying out new bikes is so much fun-glad to see you having fun and getting experience with other bikes. Good on you for taking it easy and getting used to the bikes at your own pace, super smart and helpful to see. Hope you do more of these (also never too early to start window shopping for a second bike ahaa :D )
For a woman, or anyone, choosing between a Harley and a KTM will depend on several factors, such as confidence in handling a heavy motorcycle, riding experience, aesthetic preferences, and the types of roads or terrains she wants to explore. A Harley can offer unmatched comfort for relaxed riding, while a KTM can appeal for its lightness and versatility.
Just an FYI, on Harley’s, the kickstand is referred to as a jiffy stand. I have a ‘18 Triumph Street Triple 765R (dream bike) the is my second bike I have owned. Then I also have a ‘21 Harley Sport Glide. Then I added a ‘23 Triumph Tiger 850 Sport. As something to think about, that Harley Sportster is no longer made. They replaced it with the new Sportster S which is a water cooled engine. Good luck with your choice and happy riding
That’s awesome that you own your dream bike!! That’s goals 😊 & yea it’s such a bummer it’s discontinued. I’m not really a fan of the new look 😅
Hi Rea🙂
I encourage you to try a Honda Rebel 1100 before you seriously consider a Sporty. I just feel that sense you already have a Rebel, you might dig a bigger version of that bike?🤔😉
Hi! Yes I am very interested in trying the 1100 😊 I really want to feel the power of it & yea I definitely like the look of the Rebel.
You’ll enjoy the massive torque increase that trade provides.
If you go Harley go the iron 1200 sportster. The 883 is cool but you might want more power as you advance. I started on the 1200 and looking to go low rider s/st. The light grey one in this video you sat on.
Thank you!! Yes and I heard they both weigh the same? 😊 so that’s great for me haha
If you get a chance ride the Harley Davidson Nightster. It is a great motorcycle.
Thank you😊 definitely interested in trying that out. Gosh I have so many new bikes to add to my “to-try list” haha but I’m not mad about it 😄
I rented a MT-10 SP when I was there on vacation last month. Had a blast riding again in Hawaii. My friend has two bikes also, so I rode his R1 and gixxer 750 after the MT-10. Used ride a 07 CBR600RR, when I lived there. Now I have 23 CBR1000RR in Dallas
Oh nice!! That’s awesome 😊 it sounds like you had a fun trip! Those bikes sound so fun to ride. It makes me want to try them out lol
Safe riding!
Interesting choices. I can imagine the 300 is a bike you've outgrown. There's an 1100 Rebel too. Sportster 883 not sure if you outgrow it either.
The Duke or any naked bike is always a great option. But I am a big fan of naked bikes.
Haha yes it’s about that time that I’ve been interested in trying something new! 😅 I am curious about the 1100. It would be cool to do a full comparison of the 300, 500 & 1100.
The naked bike was fun but definitely something I had to get used to haha I really want to try out a few more
Super fun sharing that experience with us.
Everybody grows out of their first little bike but it's such an important step to start small and discover what kind of riding and what kind of bike speaks to you. I hope you'll try a few different bikes and manufacturers before choosing your next ride and that we'll get to see that too. On a side note if you're gonna go with a European import , make sure there's a good mechanic that's certified for your bike available. I love my Triumph Speedmaster (you should definitely try one) but it was not super easy finding a good, qualified mechanic near me. Just something to think about. Cheers!
Thanks so much for the comment!! It was so much fun trying out these very different bikes 😊 I feel like I should’ve done this when I first started so I could compare the different types of motorcycles to choose from but 🤷🏻♀️ oh well lol
I definitely plan on trying out more bikes before making the big upgrade. & thanks for the tip about finding a good mechanic!
I love the scenery at Hawaii and yes a bigger bike always feel more substantial on the highway, much nicer on long trips, funny how they used time to set up a road closed sign and cones, instead of just cutting it up and removing it.
I feel so lucky to ride around with such scenic views 🥹 & lol yea they are always closing off that road for so many different reasons. The full loop is rarely open 😂
It's nice that you are able to rent bikes! We don't have that option here.
I am definitely a cruiser rider. I prefer the sitting position of it and the style. But that's why it is important to try different models.
Ride safe!
Aww man! That’s such a bummer that you’re not able to rent bikes out near you. & I totally agree, I like the sitting position of a cruiser much more. I’ve still got to try a sport bike (I doubt it’ll be comfortable for me haha). But I’m still curious of what that would be like. Thanks for the comment!
Outstanding ! That bike has your name all over it ! Like a duck to water. If you can go from a Rebel 300 to an 800CC Harley you can ride anything..It's all about belief and confidence. Now you know you can do it... it opens the door to pretty much any bike you like and feel comfortable on. Sadly I just sold my Triumph Rocket III 2400cc.. I know the feeling of toppling forward over the bars..I felt like that the first few rides on my Triumph Street Triple. Why not test ride the Rebel 500 or the 1200 just to compare them ? Ride safe, nice to see you. 🤠
Haha I like that “duck to water” 😊 yes I felt like the sportster was just calling my name & I had to try it! I was very shocked with how quickly I was able to adapt to the bigger/heavier bike so yes this gave me a lot of confidence to try more bikes! I think that’s a great idea to test out the 500 & 1100 just for fun 😊 thanks for the comment!
Next try a HD Street Bob. It’s a lil bigger but has a lower center of gravity and a bigger but smoother motor. I think you’d love that too.
Yes, the Street Bob is worth a try. While it's heavier, it does have a lower center of gravity making it easier to handle than the Sportster at low speeds.
Thank you for the recommendation!! I definitely want to try that out 😊 the bigger bikes kinda scare me but I totally understand the lower center of gravity. I think I’ll be shocked with how smooth it’ll feel
Rea, I ride several bikes and my favorite by far is my naked bike. Hopefully, you can try out another one that has been lowered to fit you.
Hi! Yes I really want to try out a few more just for a comparison 😊 the Duke was pretty fun once I got used to it
Same! I have a Yamaha MT09 and love it! I started small like Rea but was ‘ruined’ as soon as I rode my friend’s 09! I couldn’t go back!
I was there on your First Motorcycle video and you have come a long way - You need to test a Triumph Bonneville Speedmaster!!!
@@scarabeo500gt thanks for your support!! & yes im definitely adding that to my list of bikes to try 😊
Look at vulcan s cafe. It has ergo fit to make it fit you it also has more hp and less weight. Mine even fill like it rides better and handles like a sport bike
Thank you for the suggestion 😊 I like the look of it
Check out the Honda transalp with the quick shifter, it’s a 750 and great for how you ride
Thank you! I just looked up photos of it and it looks so cool!
Nice vid. I ride an ‘22 Indian Chief Darkhorse. Just a suggestion try out an Indian Scout. I got a feeling you won’t be disappointed. I am in the states and Hawaii is so beautiful. I have never been but I have a feeling the roads and scenic views are awesome. ✌🏾
Wow the Indian chief darkhorse is a gorgeous bike. Thanks for the recommendation to try the Indian scout! I think it’ll be a fun ride. & yes I feel very fortunate to ride with such great views & weather 😊
Great video Rea, before you said it in the video I was thinking you’re a cruiser type lady. I owned a 04 Sportster 1200cc. If you get a Sportster get the 1200cc. There is no difference in weight to the 883cc.Don’t be intimidated by the size of the engine it’s how much you turn the throttle.
You look good on that Harley.😎Dave H
Haha yep I can’t deny it! It’s definitely my kind of style 😊 & thank you! I’ve heard that the 1200 and 883 have the same weight so that’s pretty cool. Thanks for the comment!
You look good on that Harley, if you ever get the chance try a Moto Guzzi V7, low seat height not heavy and a unique feel, I love mine.
Thank you!! & thanks for the recommendation 😊 I hope I get to try that one!
Cheee! We should ride together (I’m from Kaneohe)😊! You gave me the courage to take the course last year at Leeward and I love my sportster! ❤❤
Omg YES let’s ride!!🥰 I’ve been wanting to meet more girls to go ride with 🫶🏼
& that makes me so happy that you took the course! Congrats!!
2014 Harley-Davidson Street glide Special. You did great and look good on that Harley
Rather than a total change of bike, why not look to upgrade to the Rebel 500, you get the extra power and a little extra weight to the bike, whilst having the familiarity of a bike you love...then you could even upgrade again to the Rebel 1100.
Just found your channel, fun video and you did awesome!
@@donalddesilets7640 thank you so much!!
Don’t overlook that triumph. Easier, faster and handles way better. My wife rides the Rebel 300. She got up the nerve to hop on the Triumph Bonneville and now won’t give it back.
Yes it’s bitter sweet I didn’t end up going with the triumph in this video!! I’ll definitely have to go back & try it out. The Bonneville sounds like it’d be fun to ride.
That’s so nice that you and your wife ride together 😊
I’ve been watching you and I love your videos you have helped me a lot with my bike journey!!! I bought a Yamaha R6 for my first bike but I learned on a sportster!!! And it was fun even though I dropped it twice! Lol anyways I am proud to say I got my license yesterday I passed my MSF course and then drove for a hour long trip on my first day it was kind of nerve wracking but so fun!!
Hi😊 this comment makes me so happy! Congrats on getting your license and passing the MSF course!! 🎉 that hour long ride sounds like it was so much fun! Safe riding 🫶🏼
Thank you 🥰 you too!!!
I’m 61 years old just got my license and a 883. I’m wondering if anyone has a hard time pulling in the clutch? I don’t know if it’s just a strength that I need to build up to or I’ll get used to it? I took a class and the bike they had us practice on was a rebel and that clutch was so easy. I love the bike never thought at 61 I’d get a motorcycle license ha ha. But here I am!
@@deeturner hi!! I’m pretty sure they’re notorious for the clutch being hard to pull in. I also had a hard time pulling in the clutch on the 883 I rented in this video. On my rebel I can pull in the clutch no problem.
Congrats on getting your license!!! 😊
I have that 2021 390 Duke.
It's a fun and reliable bike, but it ages fast. Meaning it won't be pretty in twenty years.
Now a VFR-800, that's a bike.
Have you considered jumping up to the Rebel 1100, staying with that line since you like the 300 so much? Or are you more interested in going to something totally different?
All I can tell you is HD dealerships are rip offs on service. And HD parts are ridiculously expensive.
Try a zx4rr. You would love it.
Thank you for the recommendation 😊
Try riding a 650cc bike next. Going from a 300cc to an 800 is a big jump. Then if you really want an 800, try a Suzuki Boulevard C50, it's 805cc. I went from my 1st, which was a Honda Shadow 650, to the Suzuki. SWEET RIDE 😁, i still miss it. That "shakey/windblown/not enough power, on interstates feeling", will be long gone. It has awesome balance & foot pedestals, not pegs. I cried all day, the day I had to sell it. I don't know how tall you are, but I'm 5'6" and my feet rested securely on the ground 😉. I recommend this book to everyone wanting to learn to ride 👉 Proficient Motorcycling - the ultimate guide to riding well. I bought it, after dropping my 650 on my right leg, pulling in to fast at a gravel parking lot 🤣. It helped me so much!! I used to go to huge mall parking lots, early in the mornings, when it was empty, and practice, practice, practice. You gain skill and self confidence really well, the more you practice controlling your bike 😉.
Hey Rea,
Do you follow Doodle on a Motorcycle? She's about 5'5" and she is close to ya
ou age wise. She has taken long, long trips on Harley Touring bikes that weigh close to 900 pounds, like my Road King. If Doodle can do it, you can too!
Hi! Yes! She’s awesome 😊 but shes such a badass haha I’ll have to work my way up to those heavy touring bikes but that’s a goal of mine for sure 🙌🏼 thanks for the comment!!
Definitely try the StreetTwin, and the Bobber. Great Bikes!
And speed twin.
My daily is a 1200 SpeedTwin! I love it, but the seat heigh and extra power would be a handful coming off the Rebel. The Triumphs really are in a different league when it
Comes to quality fit and finish. Definitely worth a try!
@@wesleywilkinson4355 me too. ‘19 modified. They have the speed 900 and I think 400 now.
Both great choices!
Great suggestions! Thank you 😊
You'll get use to it fast congratulations
Thank you!!
I am 4'11 and ride a 2021 Kawasaki z400 abs.
Nice! Gosh the z400 looks so cool 😊 that’s definitely on my list of bikes to try so I hope I get to one day
The thing about a sportster is you cant solve every problem with throttle- so you have to learn to ride. Lots of people dont want to learn to ride, they just want to go more vroom vroom and go faster. You'll pass a lot of them on your sportster. Welcome to the cult ;p
You should seriously look at an Indian Scout, they handle incredibly well. I ride at 1732cc Victory Crossroads that handles like a sport bike and it's a BIG bike.
Thank you! Yes that’s been a popular recommendation and I’m very interested in trying it out 😊
Dang! The victory crossroads is huge haha it looks cool
Get a Rebel 500, you’ll love it 👍🏻
I feel like I have to do a comparison now of the 300, 500 and 1100 😂 I wanna find a way to make that happen
Congrats!
How are you liking your new Sporty?!
Great video! What product are you all using to communicate?
Thank you! We are using the SENA 50R and 50S to talk 😊
You will regret it the Honda won’t give you problems and is way more reliable than the HD that needs service every 5000 miles and it gets very expensive
its all physics, girl. enjoy your ride
I know my next bike would be DCT or electric.
Wishing you the best on your new ride 😊 looking forward to seeing the new content with it 👍😎 stay safe, Rea
Edit: realized it was a video about renting the bikes, but it feels like you’re leaning towards getting a Harley in the future 😅
@@henryrevitajr haha yes it was just a rental! But in definitely interested in getting a Harley in the future after trying it out 😊 I still want to test out a few more bikes but hope I can officially upgrade my ride soon.
I’m getting my first bike and it’s over 1500cc 😩
Awesome I ride a 2019 road king standard
The sportster is a good choice but you should consider an Indian scout As well …. ditch the duke
Yes I want to try out an Indian scout for sure 😊
Omg hearing you rev the Sportster so high hurt my soul lol. The rev range on harkeys is much lower than most Japanese bikes so you can and should shift earlier. Harkeys redlines at about 6k rpms and most Japanese bikes go much higher
Oh shoot!!! 😅😅 haha my bad! I had no idea. Thank you for letting me know 😂
@@RidewithRea No problem! Glad you enjoyed the Sporty!
Get the Harley 💯
Aaaa!! shift the bike!
Be careful what you wish for.
upgrade
Should get an Indian....
Hi let’s ride together
Whoever let you get that Harley , you should de friend them. First of all they’re over priced and the bike overall is shit honestly. Should’ve went with an Indian scout bobber. ‘More power , wayyyyyy better looking . And it’s cheaperrrrrrrrrr. Smh whoever let you do this.
Get an Indian. Harley’s gone woke. Don’t bother.
shift!
If you get a Harley look at either the Heritage or the Dyna. The sportster is stereotypical to a "Woman's Bike"
don't forget to wave back at the other bikers
🖐️😎
Yes!! I normally do! I think I was just focusing too hard sometimes haha
If I don’t feel comfortable letting go of one of my hands I usually try to nod or acknowledge them in some way 😅
@@RidewithRea ah ok, you're forgiven. lol. stay safe!
