Yo! Thanks for stopping by! I messed up and included the same joke twice in the video. 10000000$ to anyone who finds it. Also, I'm working on a video for Crow Country. So keep an eye out for that.....................or else.
I really don't like the original trilogy for westerners as they discluded Japanese audio for games that take place in Japan. To even now the creators literally made this game not mentioned or non-canon in a sense. Rei never shows up again and Miku regresses in her survivors guilt in the 5th entry.
This is probably the best/scariest in the series, held only mildly back by the back tracking of the same location ever time you sleep/explore the manner and the fact you can max out your inventory by sleeping and exiting sleep regularly, since the items respawn. I can't wait till you play Game 5, since it links directly back to the first three again.. in the worst narrative way possible!
I love your take on this franchise. This is my all time favourite game franchise. For me it's definitely up their with my love for Resident Evil which is how I found your channel in the first place. I would love to hear your thoughts on Silent Hills spin off title Forbidden Siren. Highly reccomend. Absolutely loved that franchise.
I love this series. It holds a special place in my heart as my sister and I played it a lot after our dad died. We spent HOURS upon HOURS playing FF2 to beat every single mode. She'd be on walkthrough duty, though often she'd get too focused on her fanfiction and forget to give me a heads up on incoming boss fights until I was begin attacked. Leading to "Oh yeah by the way boss fight" still being a running joke between us nearly twenty years later. I can remember playing 3 so much that when she called asking for help I was able to give her step by step directions through the house without even looking.
Fatal Frame 3 speedrunner here (NG+ mostly, current WR holder in all difficulties). About Kei's combat; you're right that he is far and away the hardest combat wise. His camera is significantly weaker and his filament is hard to gauge. That's why you're *not supposed to fight with him*. He's given the hide ability specifically to escape ghosts. Fighting is for a last resort. That's why his mandatory fights are relatively comparatively few and take place in more open floor plan type rooms. And due to the weak power of his camera, it changes which lenses work best. In NG+, you still use the Blast lens on him instead of the Crush lens like you do on Rei. Also, funny story; in NG+ with fully upgraded everything, you one-shot Reika on Easy and Normal, and two-shot her on Hard and Nightmare. And another point; this is the first Fatal Frame game where the good ending is considered canon, which is hilarious because it's only available on NG+ (you can complete a sidequest in Hour X or XII with Kei to get him an item which saves him from Reika). Yuu, Mafuyu, and Kei were all best buds; you can catch Kei talking in his sleep, and it's either about Mayu or *both* Mafuyu and Yuu. AND EVEN MORE CONNECTIONS; Rei's last name is Kurosawa, like Sae and Yae, but is not related to them as far as we know, though Yuu is a direct descendant of the Camera Obscura's creator. And lastly... Miku chasing after Mafuyu rather than trying to escape the manor is canon. *Gestures at Fatal Frame V and a certain... Product of their interaction*.
I feel so good seeing everyone confirm how bad Kei sucks. At the same time, it's not fun finding out that I'm dumb and could have hidden more to help. Ha! I do wish I could return to a time when I wasn't aware of the whole Miku and Mafuyu thing from part 5.....
Glad you got around to my favorite Fatal Frame. I especially loved the house segments. Had a Silent Hill 4 vibe to coming back to room 302 till it eventually starts getting haunted as well. The grieving process and not wanting to let go of lost loved ones being the central part of the story was well explored too.
I find Fatal Frame 3 to be my favorite in the series, and I was disappointed that lots of people rated it so low because of "how similar" it is to the previous ones and how it reused maps. I absolutely loved the dream aspect, walking around her house, and the refined aspects from the previous games.
I LOVED how her house/apartment changed and became progressively more haunted as the game progressed. It put Silent Hill 4: The Room to shame in that regard. It was a slow build up and masterful at the scares. Stop reading and experience it for yourself, but here are some moments that got me good... -Strange breathing noises... look all around seeing nothing. Then I look up at the skylight and see I'm being watched. -Passing by the bathroom as I have dozens and dozens of times before but having a bloody hand print at one point. -Waking up and looking around the room... the noticing someone was hiding under the bed. Had to change my underwear. -Her cat hissing and yowling at... something in another room. The game LOVES to mess with you, but it knows not to do it frequently. Its a SLOW build. I so wish there were more games that were nothing more than a haunted house with a slow build.
I don't think I made it all the way through but I found a lack of scary ghosts...bout the only good ones were the girl in the crawlspace and the Fallen woman
This one was probably my favourite in the series. The gradual bleed over of the other world into the real world and the formerly safe home becoming more and more corrupted was spine chilling!
Everyone other than me seems to have picked up on the similarities between this and SH4. I really wish I could have included a bit in the video talking about it.
This game is so much more enjoyable on consecutive playthroughs to me, being able to notice all the little details that relate back to one another or a general theme is such a satisfying feeling. Can’t wait for Fatal Frame 4!
Fatal Frame 3 is one of my all time favorite games, I'm so glad you enjoyed it and I love you are going through the series. FF3 really has the best camera play of the series. I love weaving in Fatal Frame combos and using Rei and Mikus abilities to their fullest. Miku being able to slow down time and do double damage makes her so strong. You can one combo any ghost with her if you fully utilize her abilities. I really hope we can get ports of the first 3 so more people can play them. Love the vids and I can't wait for the next one!
To answer your question Avalanche ma man, Kei THOUGHT Reika wasn't nailed down, hence his suggestion to nail her back in the chamber, which is also why when he gets into the chamber he is horrified to realize Reika's body was already nailed down, but her spirit was refusing to sleep. Reika didn't just turn evil, but rather in viewing what happened to her unfair, she pulled everyone with torment into the manor to instead force them to relive their sorrows over and over instead of shouldering them herself. Kei manages to find his way there due to his stress over Mio's worsening condition as she is being taken by the manor because of the torment she feels from killing Mayu. SPOILER FOR ANYONE WHO WANTS TO PLAY That's also why while Kei failed, Rei managed to successfully make Reika pass on; because Reika's dead body had its eyes constantly looking at her lover due to that being the position the family head cruelly left her in and when Rei closed her eyes, Reika's spirit was finally able to rest. Kei wanted to forcefully put Reika back to sleep without resolving her pain, which made her angry and she killed him, while Rei at the end understood that the ritual wasn't the problem; it was the spirit that needed to be put to rest unlike 1 and 2 where the issue was the ritual itself having been left incomplete/impure. Remember, in 1, Kirie has to accept her role as the sacrifice to set everyone free, and in 2, Yae's spirit returns to Sae which finally convinces Sae to let the ritual be completed (through Mio and Mayu), setting everyone free. In 3, Reika was way beyond that point already, she didn't care about the ritual or setting her victims free, she wanted to rest but she can't because she has to always look at the corpse of her lover, resulting in her rage. Note that even during her boss fight she keeps repeating how the torment never ends because she can't be with the man she loved yet has to look at his dead body. Remember her words: "Over and over...please...I don't want to see...anymore..." Sorry for the rant, the third entry holds a very special place in my heart and it was the very first game where I got fully emotional, like bawling emotional after I finished it.
Anyone confused on why Yuu (or anyone) who was not dealing with the curse would be there should look into the far shore and Obon. The series touches on real world practices. This is why we see lanterns with spirits surrounding them. These are guiding them to the afterlife and the temple is a flood gate to that world. When Rei walks into the water she is now partly touching the land of the dead.
Fatal Frame 3 was the first one I played, then 2, then 1. Everyone says 2 is the best but 3 has more gameplay mechanics and a far better story. I will say though that 1 has the scariest ghosts and 3 probably has the worst ghosts. Oh, and 1 is the only one that plays at 60 fps, so that's nice.
One of my favorite horror games and my favorite entry in the series. I'll forever hate that Rei wasn't the returning character in Maiden in Black water to do the ghost marriage instead of who they did go with
I'm so glad you enjoyed the third game! It's my personal favorite and it's exciting when others see the charm in it too 😄 Crimson butterfly is great and iconic for sure, but this one is often overlooked!
Judging from my comments on the last videos, i kind of thought 2 was going to be the fanbase's darling, but it's awesome to see so many people agreeing with me on this one.
I followed fatal frame across multiple gaming publications for years. And then when it came to America and was able to be purchased… was the year I stopped taking my adhd medicine. And I literally couldn’t sit still long enough to get through the opening
The divide between the waking world breather, and the dream world actual spooky game section was such a nice touch for me, and it's such a big opportunity to ruin the players one comfort spot by having the horror bleed into reality. I cannot gush over that enough
I believe at some point the story mentions that Reika is somehow able to trap the souls of literally everyone as they past from life to the afterlife in her sleep dimension. Something about trying to be with her boyfriend again by stopping the flow of souls and effectively halting the cycle of birth, death and rebirth. So that's why Yuu (along with a couple thousand other souls) is there.
The thing with Kei is that along with the hide ability, he has a high HP and is able to perform actions like jumping between roofs and moving heavy objects. The devs probably want to make his gameplay significantly unique compared to the others (Rei being all rounded? And Miku having the strongest camera with the overcharge), but the 2-bar charge camera is definitely a bit too much. Fortunately, the very next installment has the same formula (three protagonist with differing feats) but with the Kei-counterpart being far more unique on his own.
Listening to some of your comments as it goes on, with the knowledge of the "full lore" has got me excited for you to continue to unravel the lore. Yuu was already helping Kei with the folklore before he died. Rei's loneliness and Yuu's relevance with the lore could have given his soul the capacity to be tied down with the manor. I always felt like he was trying to help im the way a ghost can. Just remember, no matter what anyone says. There are only 4 Fatal Frame games.
"All of this somehow manifests itself in tattoo ink". Blood. It's blood. Those who offered their pains offering their blood, which is mixed into the tattoo ink. It's discussed in one if the files. EDIT Yuu was there because the Manor of Sleep curse was preventing the dead from passing on to the afterlife. That's why there's *so many shadows*. The water lanterns are a representation of that. Same with why Miku sees Mafuyu. She *also* meets him briefly off screen after her final chapter when she's comatose. You see the result of THAT interaction in Fatal Frame 5 *vomits*.
@@AvalancheReviews Good. Now you must suffer with the rest of us xD (I don't think it's explicitly stated in FF5, but "that event" is implied to have happened around when Rei was chatting with Yuu during the ending. Which brings up the point... Mafuyu just... really got crushed by those rocks in FF1. His spirit *isn't even chilling with Kirie's ghost anymore like he said he was going to*)
@@AvalancheReviewsI'm looking forward to your interpretation of that conception. I don't know why, but I always thought it had nothing to do with the ...um... proper biological way of making babies. It was "just" a spiritual joining event that happened to (probabaly unwillingly) result in a child.
So happy to see another video. FF3 was my second favorite game for the longest time but is sort of fighting for IV since it launched last year. The themes of 3 are so sad when you watch how the characters deal with surviving such trauma. It's gonna be why the ending for Rei is something special because of how well it was done. It's also why I really liked Reika as the antagonist as well once you get more info on the story. The fact that your apartment slowly becomes haunted constantly messed with me. Whenever I exited my dream and left the room just to see the static effect, I would be on high alert. Seeing the feet peeking out of the closet or going back to your room just for the camera to change to under your desk are the moments I remember the most. Also, I hate whoever thought it was a good idea for Miku's crawling sections to be in first person. That crawling woman scarred me as a child lmao
I know what you mean about the visual appeal of graphics in this era. You know what it is? It's the lack of complex shaders + baked vertex lighting. PS1 had no material shaders, but PS2 still had very limited offerings. You basically had a matte material and a shiny material at best. All these other fancy shaders didn't arrive until PS3(although Shadow of The Colossus had that cool low tech fur material). This meant that all the material definitions needed to be expressed in 2d with the textures. Need something that feels like leather? The texture artist had to paint it on the 2d map on a small texture size. It gives these games a very hand-painted artistic look vs. the procedural look of modern materials + realistic lighting you see in a new AAA game.
Absolutely!! Game devs in the PS2, Xbox era really had to hand craft things. After that generation, it became more about creating tools that would auto generate a lot of the effects that used to require a person to make.
The fatal frame team actually considers the ending where kei is alive cannon because it was meant to cap off the trilogy of games giving mio, rei, miku, closure
@@AvalancheReviews well that's heartwarming I still have my Dad's copy on my shelf horror games are like the only good memories I have of my dad. Whenever he'd play resident evil 2 he didn't need a guide he would just ask me everything 🤣
I know that you get this a lot from me, but thank you for these long form documentary retrospective videos and content. it's my favorite on youtube and you're my go to guy for this stuff. I hope you been well Jared
It genuinely is my pleasure. I love making long videos and it's killer knowing people like watching them so damn much. I've been doing great! Living the dream over here in Japan and trying to play a bunch of video games. Does not get much better than that.
@@AvalancheReviews i'm jealous about being in Japan. Maybe you can do a mini vlog update or can do a history video about the paranormal side of japan. that would be a sick video in the future!
Man, I love that sappy J-pop song that played in the ending. It was so good that it made me and my sister who likes watching me play tear up cos Rei finally moved on from the pain of losing Yuu. Also, I love how the alternate ending is the canonical ending which means all of them lived.
Ff3 was my introduction to the series and it’s still my fave ff game, really glad you liked this game so many reviewers seem to hate the story and complain about the combat being to hard they always compare it to the second game which i think is good but too easy to be a challenge.
I'm really enjoying this latest retrospective -- after gmanlives called you a chad in a review i tried your videos and ended up watching the entire back catalogue. Keep on being awesome 😃
Star Ocean 3 has a 480p mode?! Can't believe I learned something new about a game I've played three times on a video not about that game, haha. I've been really enjoying your retrospectives the last few weeks, especially on survival horror titles because I love horror and want to play them, but I never make it through. Thanks for your hard work!
This game completely gave me a new perspective on J-horror; the moment the spiritual phenomema manifested in Rei's house made me almost crap my pants. I remember looking over my shoulder everytime i was home alone. Great game; every survival horror fan should give it a try
I love that one part, where you run down the hall and see a person standing behind a curtain. Then when you go to check it out, the game hits you with a second ghost.
Awesome as always Jared. Glad to hear you found this very enjoyable. Thumbs up all the way. Now they're two games left but technically there's 3, one being a spinoff with a different name so I don't know if you will include that or not. But as for 4 and 5.....I had wondered how the hell you would review them since 4 never released outside Japan and 5 was locked to the dreaded prison we call the Wii U.....but thankfully both games have been freed from their shackles, now available on modern consoles so that should help you out quite a bit. I would say more but you gotta look it up for yourself the insane development history on them, especially 4.
I actually got a WiiU emulator up and running for 5, but found mimicking the gamepad's motion controls to be an ass. So I ended up just playing the remaster. With the 4th one, someone made a fan translation patch for the Wii original release. It's so cool being able to capture footage of that version for the video!
@@AvalancheReviews indeed, you will have a number of ways to show everyone how to play fatal frame 4. When the time comes, you're officially at the halfway point of this retrospective.
It's really interesting to see an in-depth review of this game. I loved 1 and 2 on the Original Xbox. I only found out about this a couple of years ago but never looked into the details.
I'd love to see this trilogy ported to all modern systems like 4 and 5 were. Honestly I don't care if they're remastered, I just want people to have the option to play them. And I'd pick them up to support the franchise. Though I do still own my ps2 copies and have them on emulator, cuz I rarely console game these days.
Here in the UK, the games are called "Project Zero" fun fact. And yeh this 3rd entry is my favourite. Great emotional story and amazing scares and atmosphere
This third video in the Fatal Frame retrospectives is fantastic! Thank you for your thorough and entertaining work! I haven't played the games myself yet but I'd like to some time to experience them for myself. My play style tends to be 100% completionist, so I would want to find every room, every ghost, and every item. 😂😢 God help me. I enjoy the way you organized the video, the jokes you carefully included, and your explanations. These are great videos to focus on, have on in the background or even sleep to. ❤ Thank you! I'm excited tomsee you cover the other games in the series!
Really enjoyed this one! Been looking around for these since the Wii ones are going up in price and I wanna snag 'em before it's impossible. Definitely motivated me more to go out and find them.
Oh man I have no idea how you finished this game in 11 hrs on your first playghrough. If Im not mistaken it took me like 16 hrs because I kept getting lost in the 3-in-one map that is just too big for no reason imo. Also that candle mechanic that they introduce closer to the end of the game is just pointless because you can just memorize candle locations, but it stretches the gameplay even more. In terms of the story this is my 2nd favorite in the series but damn, every time I want to replay it for all the good parts I just remind myself of how bad navigation was for me. Anyway, great video Jared, even though I know a lot about the series its cool to see your perspective or... retrospective. Cant wait till you get to my personal favorite Mask of the Lunar Eclipse!
I love this game. I love the tinny effects on the english dub. I love taking a snack break while reading through the notes. I love how every single ghost is unique and has a huge tragic backstory. I love how comforting the light of a save point can be. Fatal Frame 2 was great but the addition of grief to the horror really rewired my brain when I first played this.
Now this was a great video to pop up when I have a day off! Big preesh! Personally a bigger fan of FF2 over 3, feel like it's a bit more seemless. But love the points for 3 you have! It's a great game.
This is a good video mate. Honestly I don't think I've found to date a video that you have made about horror games. Also I got curious but outside of your cameo as a radio host for that Resident Evil fan audio story did you get to keep working with them?
fatal frame 3 was my favorite of the PS2 trilogy lol I remember playing it obsessively when I was 14 and showing it to my lil brother. i like the others but this one always stuck with me, the fear of those cursed spirits you're chasing following you home always stuck with me.
Kei's the weakest character, yes, but I feel Miku's section was the hardest to play for me. Maybe because I don't know how to properly use her special attack, who knows. I'm glad that you like this one the best, and I believe many agree it's the most refined of the trilogy. Sadly, the jumping between characters surprised me and it took too long for me to grasp, and ended up disliking it a bit. The story is good, though, and I like the ending a lot. About the nailing part, the gang believes the ritual failed because of what you mentioned and she wasn't nailed yet at that point. By doing that, it would essentially rest her soul and the manor would disappear. Of course, then Kei saw she was already nailed so it's a bust and Rei had to "kill" her using the Camera Obscura as the only way. I forgot the real reason why Yuu appeared, but I think Reika technically dragged his soul into the manor to trap Rei and the same thing happened with Mafuyu for Miku. Also, you can save Kei in the 2nd playthrough, but it might be non-canon just like how Mayu can be saved in 2.
Dude! I died laughing on Yourfavoriteson's live stream when the Christophe appeared on screen and you were like "you know this guy just got out of jail for vehicular manslaughter, right?" just a cool innocent fun fact: This guy got out of jail for killing someone, and now he's doing fun promotional interviews XD
I've been waiting for this video!! Love your content. I love that you are exploring the franchise of Fatal frame. Fatal frame 3 is one of my favourite games of the franchise. 3 and 4 are my top picks. Unfortunately 5 didn't quite hit the mark for me interms of atmosphere, mechanics and story. I'd love to hear you thoughts on the subject when you get to that entry. I do love that this franchise has a tendency to put female protagonists as the main players. Is a girl, I do admit I find I do find games more engaging playing as a female character. This is what I loved about the Resident Evil franchise was the ability to play as multiple characters. Similar with silent hills spin off of forbidden siren. I kind of agree and disagree with your pointbon being snatched out of the manner of sleep just its getting was frustrating but in saying that I did like the anticlimactic feeling as it felt genuine to what its like waking up from an intense dream. To me it plaid into the realism of waking up before you finish a dream.💝💝
I can 10000% see where you're coming from on part 5. Also, I tend to prefer playing as women in games too. I'm really not sure why. Come to think of it, i think survival horror games tend to have disproportionately more women in main character roles. Maybe that's another reason I'm drawn to them???
In the original story conception of Fatal frame 5, Miku was supposed to enter the ghost marriage with Kei from fatal frame 3 although, this was later changed to Mafuyu. Which i under stand her desire to see her brother again although the idea of Miu being Mafuyu and Miku's daughter is kinda werid even though the don't get physical in her conception but still. If you look at Miu's design, you can deffo see more of Kei and Miku in her. Plus her name was very close to Mio who was Kei's niece. For mire deep dives into the lore of the Fatal frame franchise, I can't reccomend enough the youtube channel Tara A Devlin. Her fatal frame content is so indepth! 💝💝
While 2 is my favorite, 3’s vibes are absolutely unmatched- I legit listen to “Fatal Frame 3 soundscapes” to work/sleep because it’s so weirdly soothing. 😂 Never liked the run/hide segments though; it keeps me away from replaying it as much as the first 2 (I thought 2 gave us the right amount of it with Kusabi and Sae). Also kinda wish they went with Mio being the 3rd protagonist as originally envisioned, but Kei really grew on me. Such a lovely story about grief- the ending gets me so emotional!
Yeah I think the overall exploration in FF2 was better because it wasn't broken up by the day and night sections like 3. IF we could combine the two, we'd have the perfect Fatal Frame game.
Hey Jared, I'm looking to run a Dino Crisis HD rebirth run, I've got it all set up to go but it doesn't run on an emulator that has save/load stats or other functions. Is there a way I can play the HD game and be able to pause mid-cutscenes like you can with RE Seamless HD? Thanks.
Haven't watched this as I want to finish the games first, but the Switch version is great in portable mode as the Switch itself (inc motion controls) may as well be a camera. I seriously believe it's the definitive way to play.
I was having fun, but "sappy j-pop" put me off. That was Tsuki Amano singing her song "Koe". She is one of my favorite artists of all time. She has some some pop songs, but most of her genre is rock. She's done every ending song in this franchise from Akai Chou through Nuregarasu no Miko. If they get to a 6th game I'm sure she'll be there for that too.
Looking back on it, I think this game may be the reason why I didn't have that much difficulty with the previous two games, lol, this was the game that got me started with the franchise, and for some reason I ended up going in backwards order, so by the time I played the first, I was already well versed with the combat and other systems. It really is unanimous among everyone in the fanbase that Kei had the worst gameplay by far, which is a shame considering he's our first playable dude, I think that's why our next playable guy ends up feeling like a do-over with how awesome he is during gameplay. I'm glad my favorite entry in the series became your favorite too! These retrospectives are fire!
Gameplay-wise, I'm terrible at FF3, but the aesthetic and atmosphere are so there. I've watched friends play through the game at least 4 separate times
When FF3 came out I checked EVERY video game story and nobody was selling it. I never ended up getting it even though I adored 1 and 2 and was so hyped for the release of 3.
Really appreciate the video setting and port comparison stuff. As far as the "are the visuals good" question, I'd judge it for the time. This game looks amazing and I'd have definitely been jaw dropped on release. Shenmue is my favorite example though. It looks quaint and silly today perhaps, but on release it felt so insanely realistic down to the smallest details that I'd absolutely factor that in its favor. Thankfully having felt that playing it at the time it still amazes me just in how it holds up compared to games from the same year. Biased though, much as today's visuals blow my mind and HL Alyx especially made me feel like a kid in 96 seeing Mario 64 all over again, I'll take well realized 90s/early 2000s visuals everytime I can.
I wonder if people who weren't raised in the PS2 generation can look at graphics like this and still appreciate them for looking impressive? I actually think about that a lot.
My kids do, but again probably bias there haha. I can't imagine anyone looking at something like Haunting Ground and not being visually impressed though. Just glad I got to see the rapid progress we made in the 80s through 2000s where every couple years games blew our minds at how real they looked. A lot of that "realism" aged poorly and the more stylized stuff has shown to be more timeless, but I still recall being impressed then and it hasn't fully rubbed off. Nowadays it seems we can't take visuals much further, I feel bad for this generation missing out on that sense of wonder and having a rougher time appreciating older classics. I often have that issue with Hayes Code era films though so guess I kinda get it? I can appreciate some classics but it's often the time capsule vibe that sells it. Harder for me to try to appreciate it like someone who was there would have and bet games are similar to the younger crowd.
This is the one game in the series I have not played. I actually have a brand new copy still in the plastic but after all these years I feel like I shouldn't open it because it may one day become valuable.
@AvalancheReviews so heads up the next one 4 you are probably better off playing the remake first then the wii one after, its defiantly a case of quality life improvements practically makes the remake a replacement of the original(the original suffers from Dev's first time using motion controllers in a game. the 5th one defiantly improves and makes use of them a lot better) oh and the story was a collaboration with mr. suda 51 himself maybe why I consider the 4th one to have best story and enemy design in the series so far something to look forward to. but for real do the remake first you'll have a much better time
Yaaay just back from gym and found another one of Mr silverbeards *retrospective (Jared voice)* what a perfect end to a awsome day on da coast 😎😎😎😎 greets from sunny Spain 🫶🏽🫶🏽🫶🏽
I only hope that they will remaster all three Fatal Frame games. With better controls, and good amount of frame rates. Plus they put the extra features from the Xbox ports in it. Don't know if they'll remaster the original FF2 or its Wii remake. Either of them will be good.
This game has an interesting spot for me. For a while in the beginning I wasn't feeling it. I didn't like the ridiculous backtracking they had in this one, and I wasn't a fan of how I was constantly pulled out of the dream world. But towards the final parts of the game, it started getting more interesting and that's when I had one of the biggest "shit my pants" moments in the series. It was when I entered...the crawl space. Yeah, you all know what I'm talking about. Then the game kicked my feels right in the balls when I had the Miku cutscene trigger and Rei yells out for her. The final boss pissed me off though. Overall, it was good game and I like the nightmare on elm street inspiration it took with a person's dreams slowly killing them in the end.
i heard sony is working on a new ps2 emulator for ps5? if so then if u mod ur ps5 and run the game there i believe u should get 4k or close to that upscaled by the renderer tho sadly nothing can be done about the 30 fps but at least i think it will be locked
I really don't like the original trilogy for westerners as they discluded Japanese audio for games that take place in Japan. To even now the creators literally made this game not mentioned or non-canon in a sense. Rei never shows up again and Miku regresses in her survivors guilt in the 5th entry.
I've seen a few of your comments are just time stamps. Any particular reason for that? It's that like a bookmark? So you can come back to the same spot later?
Jared's hate list: 1.Ray Tracing 2. DLSS 3. SSR. 4. Switch Jokes aside, I miss those times as well. Visual improvements and interesting gameplay used to go hand in hand.

I can't wait till you play Game 5, since it links directly back to the first three again.. in the worst narrative way possible!
If I find it you can keep the cash. I just want to pick your next tattoo. I’m thinking…death metal care bear.
That's beautiful, thank you for sharing. Much love to you and your sister!
It definitely did have that SH4 vibe. Very very good stuff.
I find Fatal Frame 3 to be my favorite in the series, and I was disappointed that lots of people rated it so low because of "how similar" it is to the previous ones and how it reused maps. I absolutely loved the dream aspect, walking around her house, and the refined aspects from the previous games.
FF3 is also my favorite. For other reasons, when I played it for the first time, I just lost my husband ,so the ending was very emotional for me.
Couldn't agree more! Best game in the series.
I got a similar experience going through to edit all the capture footage to make this video. So damn good!
I thought I'd be in the minority here, but it looks like there's a lot of us! Hell yeah!
SPOILER FOR ANYONE WHO WANTS TO PLAY
That's also why while Kei failed, Rei managed to successfully make Reika pass on; because Reika's dead body had its eyes constantly looking at her lover due to that being the position the family head cruelly left her in and when Rei closed her eyes, Reika's spirit was finally able to rest. Remember her words: "Over and over...please...I don't want to see...anymore..."
Sorry for the rant, the third entry holds a very special place in my heart and it was the very first game where I got fully emotional, like bawling emotional after I finished it.
I fully understand where you're coming from
I love your summary! FF3 is forever one of my fav games
fatal frame solved tank controls with moving camera, but no one else noticed, you can have modern analog, with a tank run button if you want
5:35 S.T.D Spiritually Transmitted Disease.
Kills me every time and this just came out 😂
Dude, i love it when people vibe with my awful humor. I genuinely thought that joke was the funniest thing I've said in years. HA!
6 minutes in and this is already my favorite thing I've heard all week xD
Fatal Frame 3 was the first one I played, then 2, then 1. Everyone says 2 is the best but 3 has more gameplay mechanics and a far better story. I will say though that 1 has the scariest ghosts and 3 probably has the worst ghosts. Oh, and 1 is the only one that plays at 60 fps, so that's nice.
I agree with this whole comment.
One of my favorite horror games and my favorite entry in the series. I'll forever hate that Rei wasn't the returning character in Maiden in Black water to do the ghost marriage instead of who they did go with
She was a very cool character. I would have loved to have seen her in 5.
nah it's actually a good thing, i would not want Rei to be involved in that mediocre sad attempt of FF game
@@VelvetSky1102 I feel you, but I'm also not a fan of them making the FF1 protag the one to want to have the ghost marriage
Worst timing ever!! Here's hoping you've been able to finish it since then.
Can't believe that fatal frame will be discussed until now :o
how old i am already?!
I love how scary and haunted the home gets as the game goes, like the one place you felt safe is no longer safe. It makes you feel so paranoid.
Yeah, that was a great touch. Very SH4.
@@AvalancheReviews I jumped like a scared kitten in some parts while in the house during the day.
My brain shut down at someone calling Yukiko Amano "sappy j-pop."
I think you mean Tsukiko / Tsuki Amano.
And yeah, that comment kinda hit me too… 🥲
The thing with Kei is that along with the hide ability, he has a high HP and is able to perform actions like jumping between roofs and moving heavy objects.
EDIT
Yuu was there because the Manor of Sleep curse was preventing the dead from passing on to the afterlife. That's why there's *so many shadows*. The water lanterns are a representation of that. Same with why Miku sees Mafuyu. She *also* meets him briefly off screen after her final chapter when she's comatose. You see the result of THAT interaction in Fatal Frame 5 *vomits*.
Yeah......I wish I wasn't, but I'm aware of that whole sub plot....
2005... What a time...
Especially because the ghost that attacks you when you're crawling is that scary ass lanky one!!!!!
Never could get into these games. but jared doing a fantastic job of making them super intresting.
This one is my absolute favorite. I hope you do the other games in the series. Excellent work as always.
Thanks! We're going through the whole series. You've got another 2 videos ahead of you.
Your series on fatal frame made me go back and buy the 3ds Spirit Camera game.
Btw, the ending song is Koe by Tsukiko Amano
Which might be why they didn't put too much focus on kei in the first ending
I remember my dad printed out a guide for this so many pages he still got lost 🤣
I love how many comments I've had so far talking about people playing this game with their parents.
@@AvalancheReviews yo let me crash at your place dawg.
THE FATAL FRAME SERIES IS A PERFECT GAME FOR THE VR
Man, I love that sappy J-pop song that played in the ending. It was so good that it made me and my sister who likes watching me play tear up cos Rei finally moved on from the pain of losing Yuu. Also, I love how the alternate ending is the canonical ending which means all of them lived.
The fact this series never made the jump to vr is a travesty.
Never really got the correct motion controls treatment either. Very weird.
Ff3 was my introduction to the series and it’s still my fave ff game, really glad you liked this game so many reviewers seem to hate the story and complain about the combat being to hard they always compare it to the second game which i think is good but too easy to be a challenge.
Thanks for another great video Jared! hope to see the next one soon and that video about crow country. Heard good things about it.
Its my most fav game in the franchise, I love the story, the combat and the 3 different characters!
Thanks for the amazing video.
I'm glad you liked it! Thanks so much
WE IN HEREE
I'm really enjoying this latest retrospective -- after gmanlives called you a chad in a review i tried your videos and ended up watching the entire back catalogue. Keep on being awesome 😃
Heyyyyy! Word of mouth advertising at its best!!
When the time comes, you're officially at the halfway point of this retrospective.
when i hear Retrospective from Avalanche i get hyped instantly
It's really interesting to see an in-depth review of this game. I loved 1 and 2 on the Original Xbox. I only found out about this a couple of years ago but never looked into the details.
Makes sense. With the PS3 rounding the corner when 3 dropped, I bet there just wasn't a lot of hype for middle market PS2 horror games.
Yoo really loving these videos mans ^^ thanks as always. Rn i am replaying fatal frame 3 this time on my modded ps4 haha
The controls and combat in the wii games made a bad first impression on me, but after playing 4, I really like em now.
1:13 that is sick edit till title. no other FF reviewers do that
Thanks dawg! I try to make a custom intro like that for all my full series retrospectives.
Honestly, the fact that the game takes place in Rei’s house most of the time really gave me Silent Hill. The Room vibes.
The only thing I don't like about this game is those final chapters where you have to deal with those damn candles, it reminded me of SH4
12:02 ... I wonder if they were foreshadowing it, even back then. Or if that decision was the result of new people with very different priorities...
Haaaaaa! You might be right!!!!
I literally just got done watching your 2nd video in this series. What are the chances of that!
Actually pretty good chances...... I've been watching you.....
@@AvalancheReviews I need to grab the Camera Obscura ;)
Now this was a great video to pop up when I have a day off! Big preesh! Personally a bigger fan of FF2 over 3, feel like it's a bit more seemless. But love the points for 3 you have! It's a great game.
Another banger from Jared.
I'm simply a man. The banger energy just flows through me.
This series rules. Looking forward to the rest.
This is a good video mate. Honestly I don't think I've found to date a video that you have made about horror games. Also I got curious but outside of your cameo as a radio host for that Resident Evil fan audio story did you get to keep working with them?
Yeah, I'm slated to reprise that role. I'm not sure when that's going to be, but I'll definitely be back at some point.
fatal frame 3 was my favorite of the PS2 trilogy lol I remember playing it obsessively when I was 14 and showing it to my lil brother. i like the others but this one always stuck with me, the fear of those cursed spirits you're chasing following you home always stuck with me.
3 felt the best to me too. It's the classic Fatal Frame formula, perfected.
Using his soul to trap Rei makes a lot of sense!!
HAaaaa!
Suggestion for video idea: possible events of RE 0/1 if Alpha and Bravo team had gone in together at the same time.
Fatal Frame 3: *has no ports*
Jared: "Am I a joke to you?"
Maybe when you guys improve your behavior, you can get your port comparison privileges back. MAYBE
I recall there being a way to keep Kei alive but I don't recall it. I'm pretty sure he died in my game too.
While 2 is my favorite, 3’s vibes are absolutely unmatched- I legit listen to “Fatal Frame 3 soundscapes” to work/sleep because it’s so weirdly soothing. 😂
Never liked the run/hide segments though; it keeps me away from replaying it as much as the first 2 (I thought 2 gave us the right amount of it with Kusabi and Sae).
AN S.T.D. LOOOOOOL I almost pissed myself , chocked on my water and everything.
Another great video.
Thank you!
Hey Avalanches, are you planning to review the Dead Rising series at some point?
Maybe one day. I'm not exactly against the idea, but those games are kind of low on the priorities list right now.
@@AvalancheReviews Ok . Thank you

5:10 Wait this is fatal frame 3?
Why isn't that in the title? I thought this was fatal frame 1
You clicked on a video with the words Fatal Frame 3 in the thumbnail and thought it was a review of Fatal Frame 1?
Gameplay-wise, I'm terrible at FF3, but the aesthetic and atmosphere are so there. I've watched friends play through the game at least 4 separate times
Agreed. It's got that something.
Would you do a video on the Forbidden Siren games? Or Fear Effect maybe?
I've been wanting to do a fear effect video forever
This is the one game in the series I have not played. I actually have a brand new copy still in the plastic but after all these years I feel like I shouldn't open it because it may one day become valuable.
That day is today!!! That game is going for like 120$ complete in box. You could probably get double for it being still shrink wrapped.
This game will be a staple for me, my dad loved videogames but spoke no english. We'd sit with him to solve puzzles together
That is so damn wholesome, I can barely stand it.
Ha! Yeah 5 is....something.
It feels very odd watching an Avalanche Reviews retrospective with no ports section
@AvalancheReviews
so heads up the next one 4 you are probably better off playing the remake first then the wii one after, its defiantly a case of quality life improvements practically makes the remake a replacement of the original(the original suffers from Dev's first time using motion controllers in a game. the 5th one defiantly improves and makes use of them a lot better) oh and the story was a collaboration with mr. suda 51 himself maybe why I consider the 4th one to have best story and enemy design in the series so far something to look forward to. but for real do the remake first you'll have a much better time
Lawson or family mart?
Lawson for produce, Family Mart for bakery stuff and 711 for ice cream and curry pan.
Yaaay just back from gym and found another one of Mr silverbeards *retrospective (Jared voice)* what a perfect end to a awsome day on da coast 😎😎😎😎 greets from sunny Spain 🫶🏽🫶🏽🫶🏽
Mr Silver Beard. I like that a lot!! Cheers man!
I only hope that they will remaster all three Fatal Frame games. With better controls, and good amount of frame rates. Plus they put the extra features from the Xbox ports in it. Don't know if they'll remaster the original FF2 or its Wii remake. Either of them will be good.
For the battle system, maybe it's better now because you've gotten better at it?
That could be a factor, but they also heavily decreased how much damage most ghosts do, and increased the amount of damage you do to them.
No ports to compare? What is the point of my life any more?
i heard sony is working on a new ps2 emulator for ps5? if so then if u mod ur ps5 and run the game there i believe u should get 4k or close to that upscaled by the renderer tho sadly nothing can be done about the 30 fps but at least i think it will be locked

@@AvalancheReviews oh yeah, I tend to Watch video essays in Small bursts at a time. Don't mind those lol
So you found the general setup of every chapter repetitive, huh?
Oh, your retrospective on Fatal Frame 5 is gonna be fun. -_-
Jared's hate list:
1.Ray Tracing
2. DLSS
3. SSR.
4. Switch
Jokes aside, I miss those times as well. Visual improvements and interesting gameplay used to go hand in hand.
