    The ritual failed (SPOILERS INCOMING), because the Haibaras were missing the true melody and were using an incorrect aproximation. Only the maidens knew the melody, whom Ruka is the last descendant of. Her mother failed to properly pass it down, but Ruka can reconstruct it at the end of the game. The true Moonsong can then appease the souls long enough for the true mask to guide them to the beyond. Was explained in the last Ruka memory levels.

    • @AvalancheReviews
      @AvalancheReviews  6 месяцев назад +3

      I think this might be the first comment that laid it out so well. This clears up a lot. We were all theorizing that maybe the mask had been made incorrectly.

    • @christianotto5553
      @christianotto5553 6 месяцев назад +4

      The mask Ruka's father made was pretty good. The true mask is the performing maiden's face, in fact. The irony is that Ruka's father spent so much time focusing on the mask that he neglected his family and missed the actual missing piece, the moonsong. Known to his neglected wive. The song is more important than the mask. That's why the true final boss is the giant piano. Glad to hear I could help! Awesome review series, btw!

    Little tip: The revealing items with the flash light was super annoying until I realized its much easier to pull up the camera and look through the 1st person view to scan around. For some reason the camera also triggers items to appear and its much easier to move all around (I played the Switch remake)

    One more unique thing about the 4th entry is that, it's the first one to take place in a more recent setting (hospital) instead of traditional village/mansion (Rei's house doesn't really count since that's basically the "safehouse" and not really the game's level). The soundtrack, well, I mean the ambiance were genuinely creepy such as the one titled Whimpers of Hell (despite the mass reuse of Fatal Frame 3's ghost encounter soundtracks). Choushiro (the detective) is also basically a better execution of Kei thanks to his flashlight and his level taking place somewhere else most of the time.

    • @AvalancheReviews

      I would definitely take choshiro over kei any day

    One thing I like about Fatal Frame 3 and on was the transition from the sacrifices causing the failures, to time distorting the rituals.
    Spoilers for the games:
    In 1, Kirie fell in love. In 2, Yae ran away.
    In 3, 4, and 5, its important parts of the rituals lost through time.
    In 3, sending the Priestess across after she sleeps was lost from the song, causing a build up.
    In 4, we lost the Tsukimori song to trance the Kagura. *The tourist ceremony has nothing to do with the failures
    In 5, a man driven insane by the suicide of his sister caused him to lash out and kill everyone, causing Ose to be overwhelmed.
    I just really like that the blame stopped being the sacrifices.
    Edits for grammar

    This is such a great video! In regards to text in horror games I love a good balance. The first Resident Evil & recently Crow Country are a great example of environmental/cutscene storytelling w/ notes. I don’t feel like I’m reading a tome and the story is engaging/easy to follow. Puppet Combo’s “The Glass Staircase” is the complete polar opposite with a college amount of reading without much story conveyed in the game you’re playing. I love reading but I like when games blend the two into a seamless experience

I was intrigued to see how you edit the soundtrack of the game into your video, so if you happen to read this comment (Or someone else who knows), I have a very noob and inexperienced question: Do you need to make the sound files manually by yourself, or do you have an easier way to import the files directly to the editing software?

    If memory serves me correctly, the ritual failed due a combination of things. The "tourist" ritual going on was one part, the mask maker not having a complete guide to properly craft the main dancer's mask was another. Then again, the fellow wanting to do the "real" ritual didn't exactly understand what it did. As in it might have actually worked as intended, in all it's horrific glory.

    Ah, I waited years hoping that the game would have an English language official release. A couple of years ago I bit the bullet and decided to import a used copy from America to be delivered to the UK and I also bought a secondary cheap Wii for the purposes of soft modding. I successfully soft modded the Wii, but I was met with a black screen and as it turned out the instructions I was following would not work on a PAL Wii. Somehow I managed to get the game working after downloading some programs on the modded Wii that made the console think it was NSTC. It was worth all that hassle!

    57:05 I bought the switch port and completed it 100%
    The game runs mostly at 30 fps with dips in certain areas, but I don't think the performance is bad at all.
    You can basically play it in a similar fashion to the original, while using 2 joycons.
    What I don't get though, is that the switch version seems to have been overly sharpened and also has a quite aggressive grain filter over the image.
    Worst however, during cutscenes, for some reason, there seems to be a second grain filter on top of the already existing one, which gives the cutscenes a very ugly look.
    I tried to counter that by turning the sharpness on my TV all the way down. Kinda ticks me off, you can't simply turn it off entirely...
    Anyway, I wished they would remaster the 2nd game too. Would gladly buy and complete it again. It's my favourite.

      I think that was a red haring. They discuss that after the ritual, but there's a document where someone blames the other ritual for going on at the same time. We need a Fatal Frame historian!!!!

    • @Bridgeofaudio
      @Bridgeofaudio 6 месяцев назад

      It’s a little of both!
      Yomotsuki was being rushed while making the mask for the True Right of Descent, so it ended up slightly flawed. He wanted to wait until next year so he could make the mask correctly but the people in charge didn’t think a flaw would matter, because the Tourist Rite of Decent surely couldn’t actually provide any Power.
      Both Rites happening Simultaneously overloaded the Flawed True Right mask, which caused both Rites to fail. And since BOTH rites failed, Moonlight Syndrome was basically allowed Free Rein.

    • @Bridgeofaudio

It's to the point where I'm not sure I really got a good grasp on the story as I do the games technical merits, a sentiment bolstered by reading the comments and seeing all the people furhter explaining various things about it. I hadn't even grasped what one comment said, that the plot of the game is moving away from blaming the people who didn't participate in the rituals for unleashing hell, towards the people performing the rituals for bungling them or being flawed people who misinterpreted them. Feels like that's a detail that significantly alters ones perspective on the franchises story-telling tropes... but on the other hand, this game sounds like it's gameplay changes made it even harder to find the actual story, so perhaps missing key details is to be expected.
    But one thing I can speculate on is why the remake made a bunch of changes that add to the discomfort, like the "make a little skip if you hold the stick too long in a certain direction" thing- the original game looks REAL stiff to control, like absolute plod-city, and it feels like the remake made it a deliberate part of it's release-plan to be much smoother and easier to control... which then resulted in them making changes that had the best intentions but weren't exactly tested thoroughly enough.
    Also it is fun to see the differences in perspective people have because in my eyes the change that was far more resposnible for msaller, niche franchies and genres disappearing is HD consoles entering us into an era where it just became so expensive to make games that the bean-counters in game companies just started cutting down on anything that wasn't Guaranteed Profit AAA Third Person Military Manshooter Action, whereas stuff like motion controls and the Wii was barely a drop in the bucket that the videogame industry unceremoniously drowned the horror genre in.

    The ritual failed because the mask maker used the face of a budded person to line the mask of the lunar eclipse

    • @rhast57
      @rhast57 6 месяцев назад

      This is incorrect, but it is what the doctors thought caused the failure. Ruka uses the pieced together old mask, and it works fine. But it was very confusing the first play through
      The ritual failed because the Tsukimori song was forgotten. The song allowed the dancer to trance and become 'dead' to allow spirits to flow through her and then recover afterward.

    i think the 2nd girl survives, but not completely sure, the credits after beating on hard imply the ghost of the first girl led her out....i think.,...also the PC version of the remaster is without a doubt the best way to play the game. also if you want to see how the ghosts should act consistently, its the version to go with...can easily do 120 fps...the ghosts are very fast but they do slow down on their own...that said, this game is silly easy

    Was able to 100% the remaster of this game on the switch a couple of days ago. Had such a good time with this specific title specially on the first playthrough. Love the atmosphere and Suda 51's influence on this game. Probably is the best when it comes to pacing and the "friendliest" in terms of being a first entry with the IP. Though I feel that this and FF5 is probably the least scary of the series. Not really a fan of how they pulled out the scares and the enemy designs are bland without their Blossomed forms. To me, they just looked like normal people with gray skin and a gas body. Really lacking in the body horror department and variety unlike FF1 and 3. Also glad that we got FF's take on a hospital, very refreshing to be in a modern setting than the standard huge old abandoned japanese mansion.
    I personally still have a bias with FF3 just with the scares, the horror of your dreams seeping into reality like with SH4 and having to play as a young adult within my age range having a job, managing a home and had also gone through the process of grief far more relatable than with this game but Mask of the Lunar Eclipse was a really solid experience! Safe to say at least IMO the second best of the series.

    No. For fans of the Fatal Frame franchise in 2008, we simply 'didn't' get it. You imported and figured out how to use a translation patch on your Wii SD card, or you were SOL.
