@@AvalancheReviews Ada! What was that all about?! Running off like that was reckless and stupid! Those zombies are everywhere! Not to mention that thing that got Ben!
The problem with language is an all Italian problem, I’m 30 years old and people of my age have never studied or badly studied English in school, I’ve learned English more thanks to top Gear (in Italy only on pay tv) than from teachers.
The story is actually genuinely good, not SOMA material of course, but good enough to be an X-Files episode, except for a bunch of really wonky lines. The whole campy style would have ruined it. God, judging by the comments, I kind of start to sound like a fanboy.
Great review. However you didn't once mention the fact that this was originally supposed to be a fan remake of RE2 before production was stopped when Capcom decided to "do it". This explains some of the more obvious references and perhaps also the lack of consistency in the story, as it was basically wrapped around the assets which were already built at the time. Nevertheless, I'm also looking forward to this as it seems pretty promising to me. Yeah it's kinda rough around the edges but from everything I've seen so far, I would love to see what the developers would come up with in a sequel with all they've learned from this one.
This game is very unfortunate with its release timing. They REALLY should have beat RE2 to it. Now that itch is already royally scratched, and daymare just pales in comparison. It's unfair, but what can you do
This started as a fan made REmake2, before Capcom told them not to... Seeing as they had to rework all they had into an entirely new game with unique environments, story, lore, characters and monsters, when Capcom already had all of that groundwork ready for them to revamp, it's actually quite amazing to me how close to release both titles are! Based on when REmake2 began development shortly after the "We Do It!" announcement, it was almost like they were both on the starting line to make a new survival horror game!
They would need to remake and release all the classic RE games for that itch to be scratched for me. If this was on consoles I would be playing it right now. We need more survival horror games.
That is unfortunate, haha. Any RE clones from back then that are actually good? I have a list but honestly, none of them ever looked that great. It's funny how Silent Hill and RE used to be compared when they're barely anything alike. Apart from being made well and being horror, I don't think there's anything else.
Okay, I swear I am seeing some rooms from RE2 and 3. 17:18 Kendo Gun Shop is the only firm one, but the basket ball court is tingling something in my head.... Great video as always, keep on keeping on.
RE7 review; "1st person isnt survival horror" RE2 Remake review; "The 1st person mod makes it more survival horror than it already was" Daymare review; "3rd person isn't survival horror" ................. -_-
I dont know why he is so obsessed with fixed cameras... they were literally the only option devs had at the time due to technical limitations of older consoles, it isnt part of the genre. its like saying silent Hill 1 isnt survival horror because the camera is behind Harry, its stupid. Yes the fixed cameras give it a cinematic feel but im playing a survival horror game to be scared and have challenge, and fixed cameras arent the only way to do that, 3rd person over the shoulder camera actually leaves room for a lot of sares as it is seen in re2, its scary to not be able to see whats in the next corridor but irs just as scary to know you are in control of your sight and you could find something behind you
Just Ak I enjoy Avalanche Reviews for what they are, but yea just this example of cognitive dissonance throws me off. There's also fixed cameras in virtually every ps1 rpg
Your take on the matter is quite accurate of most people in this modern era. It clear displays how entitled people are and how you can’t satisfy everyone. Glad I’m not the only one to notice this.
@@justak2121 Some people like fixed cameras, it's just a matter of tastes and most probably the games you started enjoying survival horror. Why he seems obsessed with is the fact that today fixed camera is dead. So it would be nice if we some game could have it. Not all game of course. It may be a janky feature, but it's a janky feature linked to what is probably his favorite game ever made.
A RE Facebook group I'm a part of has been posting videos of this game the last few weeks and I was instantly drawn to it. I mean, it's got 1998 right in the title!
@@AvalancheReviews I notice it in even the slightest form... it bugs me terribly lol. Like on the game Days Gone. If you aim quickly and shoot, the gun will be aiming at the ground but the bullet will hit the target. . Just little things. So I can really appreciate that in this game.🙃
I may be having this just to support the developer. I’m not even sure i’m going to play it until the end, but i can see the love they put into the genre & for their 1st outing, this is really good. They don’t have the budget & resources like capcom, but i want to see them making more games with all the feedback they receive. It will be easier the second time. It actually reminds me of a game called “dreadout” years ago. Check it out if you never heard of it. Maybe its not really into your liking because it was more inspired by fatal frame, but maybe you’ll enjoy it more than you’ll expect to, as long as you come with low expectations.
a few of the voice actors in this game have been around for decades and they are fluent english and are your typical go to cheap actors. they can only say the lines and not improve them like a movie actor. overall I love this game. I always wanted a more zombie only RE 2 style of game and daymare was no let down in this regard. if they could have improved the writing in places and made the soundtrack a symphony like RE outbreak file 2, then this would be a solid winner. I give this game a firm "buy it" for finally expanding such a niche and untapped area of zombie survival horror that RE never touched. As a 90s kid who always want this, thank you devs of daymare. Solid and fair review Avalanche. also could you imagine if daymare had outbreak's intro? omg it would be amazing. (first three mins and twenty seconds of this video) ruclips.net/video/gb9_gc4GPBw/видео.html
I love what they did with the story in the beginning: taking an old Japanese Submarine / Bio weapon and trying to crack it in the future. It's like Deathstroke in Arrow. The one voice actor for Liev sounds like Steve Blum (actually a voice actor from the OG RE2 plays The Cleaner here). I also love the relationship Invader Studios and Capcom had with one another. What I hate about nowadays, is how " 3rd Person shooters cannot be Survival Horror ". At least that's the impression I get from what others say. But games like Dead Space did it right (not so much 2, definitely not 3. But 2 did have good blend of Action Shooter / Survival Horror).
Dev told me their hoping to get physical copies for Daymare on consoles. I'll wait for those to appear. Really wish they'd just focus on the Hunk type character. Btw, did you see that fan remake of Dino Crisis using UE4? Hoping that finally gets Capcom to remake the game like RE2. Way more excited about that than Project Resistance.
I'm glad they're focussing on a physical release. That makes me appreciate them wayyyy more. I did see that Dino Crisis trailer, but I think they showed their hand too soon. Capcom will definitely halt it, if they have anything regarding DC in the pipeline.
@Avalanche Reviews, I was glad to hear that too. Owning a physical copy is nice. Yeah, Capcom is probably going to cease and desist the fan Dino Crisis remake. But, maybe Capcom will finally give us a proper remake or new Dino Crisis. Was really hoping for a surprise announcement at Tokyo Game Show 2019, but alas, nope. TGS 2019 was pretty cool though. They focused on games and catering to their core audience. Unlike a lot of Western gaming cons now. Just look up what stuff PAX has planned. And now E3 2020 sounds like it is going to be even worse cringe fest than 2019's. I'd like to go TGS one day.
Dude, you didn't understand what happened in the Chopper? The end scene makes it pretty clear who was the bad guy, and why he did that he did, etc. Plus, one unsent email you can find on computer in the dam.
How many frames a second is this video? It looks faster than 60fps. I'm having a really hard time trying to decide whether 4K with 60fps looks better or if 1080p with 100+fps looks better.
The mechanics in Sam's story really does have a good idea of having hallucinations mixing into the horror. But they could have a visual clue on how they could be mere hallucinations.
S O U L Nah, seriously tho I'm so glad you reviewed this. I've been following this game's development for years and I've been trying to be cautiously optimistic about it. Definitely gonna pick it up now. Hopefully they make a sequel and smooth over some of the issues you had with this one.
the graffiti of the little girl with a bullet hole in her head at 12:01 is the one from Men in Black ? Will Smith shoots her at the shooting range right ?
I wish more games has the mechanic of loading bullets from box to mag one by one instead of instant reload (one bullet clips) or dump mag (dump or pocket mag after reloading while there is still bullets)
Was that the little girl from Men in Black at 12:00? Looks like this game had a lot of good ideas, but it just didn't completely come together. Will wait for a deep sale. Thanks for giving a solid review and hitting points most people would have ignored.

@@AvalancheReviews no i mean in this video you said over the shoulder camera isn't part of survival horror. Well in re2 videos you said it's back. And also your videos are great thanks
One thing you didn't touch on that was an odd choice by the devs was the lack of an RE style save system. Playing on Daymare mode at least should've featured this. I really had cassettes and recorders or even cd-roms in my head when thinking about how this game would be.
In short game is a near perfect homage i think but there is little incentive for replayability as there is no model swaps, extra weapon, or infinite ammo after beating the game, as far as i remember.
The way ammo works in this is literally a game mechanic I came up with many years ago, minus reloading clips bullet by bullet. I think that can be abstracted better.
Does this have any relation to the Italian devs that were making the unofficial RE2 remake? It looks very similar and the last I heard was Capcom flew them out to the headquarters. And of course we know Capcom came out with the offical RE2 remake.
A lot of these throwback type games are kind of weird. The best approach from what I understand is "Adapt how you remember the game feels and what's most memorable, rather than what the old game was exactly like." Resident Evil is strange in how diverse the approaches people want are. This game seems to remember the tense time when you have finally accumulated all the valuable ammo, but not the smart decision making and exploration needed to get to that point. I always characterized good survival horror by emphasizing decision making, rewarding environment knowledge, providing consequences of previous decisions, emphasizing exploration, and treating the world like a puzzle that can be solved. While I haven't played this game, it looks more like the sections that link bigger parts of Resident Evil rather than the actual big parts of Resident Evil. Still looks good though, I'll probably try it.
12:01 Haha Men in Black reference that's pretty funny. Thanks for the review this game is on sale on Steam for around $4 so wanted to see what your take on it was.
Thanks for the review! Tbh my playthrough was riddled with game breaking glitches and bugs, walls disappearing, puzzles becoming impossible to solve, and even roads being blocked with no reason, for which the only solution was to delete the save data and start over. Since patches didn't solve the issues I had, I sadly gave up on the game :(
Refreshing to see someone else enjoyed the reloading and magazine mechanic in this game. This feature needs to be in more survival horror games. My only gripe with it is it was missed opportunity to have extended mags hidden throughout the world.
Could had based in Italy somewhere in the Italian mountains, I'm serious would had liked to see a zombie outbreak somewhere in in the Italian mountain countryside as a game to explore.
I was wondering if this would be the best place to ask since I'd like to believe we're all survival horror game fans here. Has anyone played Deadly Premonition? They announced Deadly Premonition Origins for switch and it caught my attention but I can't seem to find much info on it. Anyone recommend it?
I've played through Deadly Premonition twice once on 360 and then again last year with the Directors cut on pc. I would recommend it overall. It is one of the most unique gaming experiences and has stuck with me. The characters are interesting and the game has lots of quirky moments and charm. There are a few sequences that really impress like when you are being stalked and the enemies have very disturbing audio. It's also endlessly quotable. On the downside it's got playstation 2 level visuals generally and the game play is very clunky. The pc version is also very unstable and I had numerous crashes including one that required a downloaded save game to skip the cutscene that was triggering it. The switch version from what I've read isn't a great port and currently has a sound issue that is awaiting a patch.
@@cloister5613 Thanks, definitely will play. Maybe I'll keep an eye out for that sound patch on the switch port. It'll give me enough time to finish up a couple more games in my backlog.

@Avalanche Reviews, I've got a pc exclusive fixed camera and tank controls survival horror game for you. *Nocturne.* Made by Terminal Reality in the late 90s. Might be cool to check out its unofficial sequel, Bloodrayne, too.
I've only played the demo, but you sounded too critical IMO. This doesn't surpass the classic RE games, but it looks way better than a few main titles and a lot of spinoff REs. Regarding dialog, dude, have you played RE1? It's terrible as well. Maybe without mistakes, but the awful delivery makes it even better, and to me, it's the same case here. English is not my main language, but I've noticed what you mean, even in the demo, but I like the B movie dialogue/atmosphere. Also, I felt that you could've mentioned that we have pretty much these devs to thank for RE2 Remake, they get a lot of sympathy points from me. All things considered, it's obviously not a AAA and I never expected to be the "return of survival horror",but loved what I've seen till now. Buying when I get home tonight.
Maybe you're right. I was pretty hard on it, but I tend to judge survival horror games pretty harshly. RE 1 does have janky ass voice acting, but that came out in an age where we had just started getting video games with voices in em. I don't get the feeling they were emulating that. It just feels like an accident here. Which like I said in the video, isn't a deal breaker, but I did have to mention it.
@@AvalancheReviews Oh don't get me wrong, I also don't think that was intentional, I wouldn't like as much if it was. I kinda feel that's the kind of thing that guys like us should support, even if it's far from perfect. I feel like defending my own problematic child, lol.

Avalanche Reviews "Great" AYYYYY-DUUUUUUH
@@AvalancheReviews Ada! What was that all about?! Running off like that was reckless and stupid! Those zombies are everywhere! Not to mention that thing that got Ben!
The problem with language is an all Italian problem, I’m 30 years old and people of my age have never studied or badly studied English in school, I’ve learned English more thanks to top Gear (in Italy only on pay tv) than from teachers.
The fact it's a genuine attempt at english and not just a "campy throwback" makes me like it more tho
I've been looking forward to this one. The more survival horror the better. Good video Jared.
Thank you!
Saying survival horror needs fixed cameras is like saying gears isn't a shooter because it's not first person..
I 100% agree
@james paul I wouldn't say that. If it fits a game, then it works. I am not opposed to them at all.
@@HarunaValen I have read your comment no less than 4 times and I can't extrapolate any meaning from it lol
No it's like saying Gears is a first person shooter. The perspective is baked into the genre kind of like an fps.
Dalton McCabe yeah I agree, it was done the way it was back then do to limitations, it’s evolved ever since (still love the classics)
This game is very unfortunate with its release timing. They REALLY should have beat RE2 to it.
Now that itch is already royally scratched, and daymare just pales in comparison.
It's unfair, but what can you do
A summer time release would've been better too. Now they released it squashed between a lot of AA and AAA games.
Yeah, I think that might have influenced me a bit.
Very good point. The genre is still under-represented, so the game does have that going for it.
They would need to remake and release all the classic RE games for that itch to be scratched for me. If this was on consoles I would be playing it right now. We need more survival horror games.
Great review, after playing the demo, its a very janky but well meaning throwback, pretty impressive for a first outing by the Dev

That is unfortunate, haha. Any RE clones from back then that are actually good? I have a list but honestly, none of them ever looked that great. It's funny how Silent Hill and RE used to be compared when they're barely anything alike. Apart from being made well and being horror, I don't think there's anything else.

Its just an opinion at the end of the day, who cares. His videos at least are entertaining
A RE Facebook group I'm a part of has been posting videos of this game the last few weeks and I was instantly drawn to it. I mean, it's got 1998 right in the title!
It takes a lot of stuff from old survival horror games. I think it earned the 1998 in the title.
I do like how the gun barrel lines up with the reticle. So many AAA games dont give enough of a damn to make sure something like that is right.
I never really noticed that. That's interesting.
@@AvalancheReviews I apologize in advance if you start noticing that and it begins to bug you lol😂😂😂😂

Very useful review! I will give this give this game a chance. Thanks for your effort!
a few of the voice actors in this game have been around for decades and they are fluent english and are your typical go to cheap actors. they can only say the lines and not improve them like a movie actor. overall I love this game.
(first three mins and twenty seconds of this video)

I always found it hilarious that the game's promo art has LITERALLY IDRIS ELBA on it and then you play the game and Sam looks nothing like him.
This guy reminds me of Raycevick. He uses the same vocabulary and just sounds like him overall.

The mag mechanics sound incredible. Ever since RE2, I’ve wished that Capcom could feature a system like that in one of their titles
I wish more games has the mechanic of loading bullets from box to mag one by one instead of instant reload (one bullet clips) or dump mag (dump or pocket mag after reloading while there is still bullets)
Very nice video, and a helluva opening!

Awesome video. I’ve heard a lot about this game but haven’t seen much gameplay until this review. Looks like a decent game, might try it out.
The way ammo works in this is literally a game mechanic I came up with many years ago, minus reloading clips bullet by bullet. I think that can be abstracted better.
Both are correct. The clip is in the magazine.
Actually SOCOM did something similar, but not having to load mags bullet by bullet. You would retain the ammo in each magazine.
4:25 isn’t this perhaps a bit deliberate ala RE 1,2 etc?
My one question is, does this game allow you to have upside guns?
That's the one thing it lacks. Sad really.....
Does this have any relation to the Italian devs that were making the unofficial RE2 remake? It looks very similar and the last I heard was Capcom flew them out to the headquarters. And of course we know Capcom came out with the offical RE2 remake.
Looks like console ports are a while off but I'm looking forward to trying this out
Well, you can't map keys in the pc version, so you could say it's kind of a console port too.
Boom! xD
