You're the best, Spud. There is nobody on youtube who explains the basics of DCS as well as you do. GS is great at advanced stuff, GR is wonderful for getting more people in to this hobby, but without you, learning the basics in a serious way would be much more difficult. Man, if I could, I'd fund ya so you could do 2 a day. Serious thanks for everything.
note here Spud, 29 and 27 never used "the same" radar set, but their emissions were almost identical in prf, carrier frequency and pulse width, but as that is that the RWR sees, it would "think" it's the same.
I was five minutes into this video, and a minute later there were only thirty seconds remaining. Super sucked me in. You, good sir, do a fantastic job with your tutorials and breakdowns of systems/tactics. 🤙🏻
👍🏾Thanks, this was so very helpful. Now I know I need that HMD up to help identify exactly where the threat is located. Once again, I appreciate this video!
One way to perceive the RWR is that it shows you threats in terms of their ability to gain and maintain radar locks, and like you said, not distance related. The JF threat is closer to your center because he/she can lock you up and hold the lock more easily than the 31s or 29s can. Missles with onboard radars will show closer to the center still, because, as you might imagine, those missles are harder to shake. Might throw on your radar jammer for those guys. In other words, the closer to the center the threat is, the harder it'll be to defend against. Also, if I am not mistaken, the threat level is based on the threat's closure rate. BTW, thanks for the lessons! You've made flying much easier with some details not covered in the training missions!
Lol I thought you know I should learn more about the RWR I'm sure there are some basic videos I can watch real quick. Saw this 40min video. I guess I'll get a drink and some food.
The RWR & HARM kneeboard that you linked for us shows a circle symbol on the RWR means that a threat is radar locking us, however in the video I never saw a circle on the RWR. I only saw a diamond and a combined diamond with a circle to represent when you were being tracked. The knee also shows that a circle with an H in the middle represents that a missile has been detected, but I never saw a circle with an H when that Mig show a missile at you.
@@higaluto they don't run around and tell us when stuff is declassified. It doesn't matter if it is 85 yrs or 8 hrs, if it is not cleared for release it isn't cleared. There is still stuff from wwII that is classified and a shit ton from Vietnam and later so you tell me... you'd have to ask Thales, Boeing or the DoD as I don't know.
@@karlchilders5420 but still alot is, hence we have a working f16 that at least feel realish, but yes you are right, i dont have a clue because i have never been closer to a f16 than at airshows, i can only compare it to information i find on the web
Nice video. You can correct me, but I read that DCS models the RWR blind spot of the top and bottom of each aircraft which means that your RWR will not detect a missile that goes pitbull if it is directly 90 degrees above or below you. Something to think about when in a BVR or medium range dogfight.
32:17 would someone be able to explain to me who or what was able to designate the air signature as specifically a Mirage 2000? I find that very interesting being able to identify a specific aircraft
How are you doing a pause of the full game? I can only do the active pause where I'm frozen but everything around me is moving, or are you just slowing down the sim speed to 1/64?
It seems that you were calling nails or mud, spike or mud spike. Am I incorrect in my understanding that it is only a spike when it is radar locking and nails or mud is a non-locking contact?
Maybe you covered it and I missed it, but this would be a good place to explain the buddy spike call out. I had no idea it was even a thing until I went on my first public server and when I would lock up an unknown, I would hear "buddy spike" and I assumed that it was his way of saying "hey pal, you just locked up a friendly". Is that the proper use of the term? Are there any other callouts like that? Do we respond a certain way? Maybe there's another video that explains all that stuff you could provide the link. Flying in public servers is a whole other world than just running your own missions in private.
Actually RHAW isn't correct for the 16. RWR works but RHAW (Radar Homing and Warning) was the F-4 wild weasel setup and isn't what the 16 has. The technical term is RTWS. Radar Threat Warning System.
I'm trying to learn this stuff, but whenever I test it, I only get the initial spikes. I never get either a lock-on or launch warning, I just suddenly die.

Intro, Material, Summary: Good. But eliminate the sections "If you're new it looks hard but it isn't." It sends mixed signals, argues against the viewer's judgement, is right up there with asking an injured person "are you ok?" and casts suspicion of incompetence on the announcer. Also, the discussion of sounds could have been improved with sound samples instead of verbal imitations.
Excellent video. Needed this bit of schooling as I've been getting my ass kicked by SAMs lately. Quick question and if I missed it I apologize. Is there any degree of range scaling in the RWR like the A/A Radar of 5/10/20....120 miles I think it is? In short does it indicate how far away the alert contact is?
Nearly 30 years ago I was teaching electronic warfare and aviation combat tactics, I would have loved to have aids like this to use. These days full military flight and tactics simulators such as Typhoon and Apache use DCS style implementations to teach pilots these skills. It saves the cost of using real aircraft hours and in fact is far easier to teach these skills in a simulator and debrief certain aspects, reset, and go again. Combined with TACVIEW it's a powerful and cost effective tool.

It isn't just signal strength - it's also ASPECT. More than this, I can't say, because I do not know what is still classified about the RWR.

the RWR just stays classified, because as new threats emerge and the RWR gets updated, the specifics of those new threats are classified.
