No 1989 is, New years eve dublin, make sure it's the correct night as lots of links say they are but not this night, I know, I was there. Song ends with..."brother take a chair, 'cos its built for you" You don't hear this, NOT NEW YEA4S EVE GIG, enjoy
This performance was extra special because it was the last concert of the Lovetown tour. U2 knew it was an end of an era and they even thought it could have been the end of U2 if they could not have come up with a new sound. Which is why they were giving it all there all as if it were there last ever concert. Amazing performance!
4:55 - 5:45 is some of the greatest singing I've ever heard. Those high belts are absolutely ferocious. It's reminds me a little of Paul McCartney's voice when he belts.
Absolutely stunning, I return to this ever so often and each time, each time.. The crowd was so powerful in their response, that amazing push and pull with Bono driving him to hit those notes with such fluidity. For myself, this was his finest performance of this song, it was a moment of magic. Peace
If you think this is inspiring check out Bad on Rattle & Hum. It is absolutely amazing. Love that song. Love the jam from Edge. I could listen to that all day.
Epic perfomance! Bono here hands down best power rock vocalist ever of any band! Period. How many (hard)rock bands would kill to have him as the lead vocalist with his incredible voice? Fortunately he's joined by my other 3 most favorite guys on this planet. Love U2 forever!!!!!
+m3cfister allow someone else to have their opinion, this is not a Freddie Mercury video. So your whiny "ohh what about-" is relevant and sounds like you need to piggyback off of other's saying their faves just to get validation. Yeah I'm in a bad mood :)
it is without question the best (means if it was sung earnestly) song ever written, It gives me 'goose bumps'. I met the band in 1993 in scotland in august 1993.The most respectful in the band was Adam Clayton. He met myself and friend as if we were "normal people'. the drummer had a high opinion of himself and Edge was out on Loch Lomond; it was his birthday so he was taking a ride. BONO was very approachable but a bit sarcastic. The Lisbon Lions had given us tickets for the concert XX
Lmao. I can imagine in his Zootv era clothing to be sarcastic as fuck. Imagine you met him in 83-87, or in 2001. Probably would be the most timid there
Every once in a while you remember the reason you wrote the song, how you felt as you poor your story out from the heart, and everything just comes together. Ladies an gents,, this is Rock and Roll!!
Just stopping Back after 9 years thanking God for life Liberty and U2 still being a part of our time in this life. I needed some mental encouragement and this song is always my GO TO!!
What's epic about this show is that it's the final show of the Lovetown Tour and their last concert before they went off to "Dream it all up again" and emerge, battered and bruised, with Achtung Baby and the ZooTV Tour. It was a loooooooong 2 years.
ArtMonkforHallofFame , they went to reinvent themselves, change the direction of Rock music with their second masterpiece, Achtung baby, which I believe to be the album that will eventually eat up the Joshua Tree as the greatest work ever.
holy crap!!! this is so special..this has to be the best damn live footage i have ever seen. this is monumental. no wander this band is the worlds best. if this was pro-shot and released officially i think it would go down in history as one of the finest performances ever caught on tape
You can tell that Bono was seriously damaging his voice here with such an intense & reaching performance. He lit the candle @ both ends. And yet, what a brilliant light he gave off. 4:45 - 5:40 is simply amazing 🕯
EASILY the best live version of this song I've ever heard...and I've NEVER heard a bad one. The crowd was completely into it, Bono was rolling...brilliant. Thanks
I saw them in Sullivan stadium foxboro in foxboro mass 1987 Joshua tree tour I was 23 then I've seen many bands to this date that concert in 87 is the best I've ever seen
10 days earlier they'd done a concert from The Point in Dublin and it was broadcast live on Radio 1. I was sitting in the hills in my car watching the New Year fireworks over Glasgow and the version they did that night stunned me, this version, from the 10th Jan is the closest they've come. Bravo!
I was just thinking the same about that Dec 31st concert and recording, (it was also broadcast on RTE), and that Bad that evening was the best version I’ve heard of the song. I must try and find my old cassette of that concert recording.
It was originally supposed to end with the New Year's Eve show. Bono had some serious voice trouble at the 1989-12-18 show in Amsterdam, causing them to cancel the rest of the shows that week. So, they rescheduled for Rotterdam, where they played the final Lovetown gigs. Four dates in January 1990, the 5th, 6th, 9th and 10th. Then it was off to Germany to "dream it all up again"...
Everything about this version is magic. Bono lets it all out and the "unscripted" part is just amazing from Bono. After he leaves the stage the pure power of U2:s music is unleashed, just listen to the beauty of The Edges guitar, the power in Larrys drumming is awesome and some of the best drumming Larry has ever done in Bad. I have heard hundreds of live versions of Bad, Larrys drumming has never been any better. And Adam, what can you say? The glue that keeps it together. The best song ever written but not the original. The song evolved to something really special during the live shows and had it's peak between 90-93. But Bad is the best live song even to this day when it's played by the band. They know it's something very special with this song, Bono has said so himself. A song about addiction, any addiction but Bono wrote it with heroin in mind. He lost one of his best friends to heroin and other friends of the band got hooked on heroin during the heroin epidemic in Dublin during the 80:s. Bono wrote the song for them but felt the original wasn't finished so they finished it during the live performances the years that followed.
This is such a beautiful song about surrendering to ones addictions and "surrendering". Im almost sure its about opiates as no other drug can get people truly physically addicted.
Those days when u2 said they had to go away and dream it up again, it meant only a 2 year break before then next album and tour, now we are lucky to get an album within 4 years.
Wow what a version, really really great! And then to think I was in the audience that night. Thanks for posting this video. Brings back a lot of memories!
This may be the last time Bono's big, wailing voice really worked. He decided to take it down a notch for Achtung Baby, though flashes of that brilliance were there during Zoo TV tour. After that it was gone.
yes, indeed, I waited for him outside the hotel in Amsterdam and he asked the other fans and me if everybody had a ticket. To my surprise most of them were honest and replied with a 'yes we have one'. i did really not have a ticket and Bono put me on the list. That was the last show before the big achtung baby boom, pretty mad thinking back about it.
This is incredible. What I love about this song is how they can change the whole feel just by how they play it. Check out the one from Santiago Chile Popmart. Climbing the ranks for me as one of my favorite versions as well. Just a whole different feeling how they play it.
Such an incredible band at this time of their career. Amazing power and energy. This would have been one of those magical nights where the crowd sings every song and sings loudly. It must have been such a rush for the band to feel the interaction with the crowd. Having seen them many times (first time War tour in 1983 at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre in Vancouver) I have experienced a few of those nights that just feel extra-special.
What a fantastic thing to be able to see it... I actually have the 2 Disc bootleg made from those Rotterdam shows. This version has always been my favorite.
Holy shit! Holy Shit billions of times! How can a song raise every hair of my body?Only U2 has this power. The best version of one of my favorite song indeed. I wish I could be there that day...
Late in the song, Bono ad libs: John Lennon's Norwegian Wood, "I once met a girl....". John assassinated 40 years ago. So here's Bono paying (how ever indirect) to the Beatles and dear departed John L. This is still great listening, going on thirty (30!) years old. Note how Bono leaves well before the others finish the tune; unusual. Was it a rather 'folkie' type tune from the Fab Four? Shades of Bob Dylan in it. Is it apt to quote lines from U2's own song "40"? "I waited patiently for the Lord..... How long must we sing this song."
Dec 31st 1989, RTE Radio (Irish broadcaster) and BBC Radio live broadcast the last of the When Love Comes To Town concerts from The Point Depot in Dublin. Across both Ireland and the UK many cassette recordings of the concert were made, (including my own). That cassette was played hundred of times over the next 15 years and I recall Bad being really, really special - even better than the fantastic versions from Wide Awake in America and Live Aid, (and possibly this version which was recorded a few days later). Audio quality of that Dec 31st ‘89 recording was probably better than this version, but there’s no video of that concert that i am aware of. I must see if I can dig out that old cassette and get the cassette player to work again.

Dang this brings back memories!! Silkensky is totally right, the played 1 gig in Amsterdam if I remember well and cancelled the other ones and rescheduled them. I'm sure they played at least 1 gig in Amsterdam cause i was there and Bono's voice was rotten that evening :-( Luckily also the people from that gig got new tickets, bless them!!
I had my father’s funeral today and this song comforts me in my grief “ let it go not fade away”
This is the best live performance of this song for sure

This is U2 taking it up a level. There is no band in 2024 that even touches this level of emotion
True!!
This song always was and always will be my therapeutic sanctuary ✨
BAD ASS 👍🏻💯 I wish Bono still had this voice
The things is that between 2004-2011 he hit the Wide Awake without straning and screaming like he does in the version
4:55 - 5:45 is some of the greatest singing I've ever heard.
Those high belts are absolutely ferocious.
It's reminds me a little of Paul McCartney's voice when he belts.
He killed his throat doing this unfortunately, and the effects were seen eight years later during PopMart
@@noradosmith True, he might have, but dang they were good in the 80's, their best stuff, so emotional. Emo before emo was a thing, hah
I think McCartney would love to be able to sing like that
If Paul McCartney dreams he can sing as well as that he better wake up and apologise.
It s true
the power of Bono's voice, the best in the 80's, what a way to handle changes, incredible, the best band for many years

His voice is really in tune for screaming in high pitch and range.
