As a French, I have to say I love everytime Zee say french words and names! These "Château d'If" and "Marseille" sounded so awesome with his voice, it almost made me want to get the game! And yes, I'm that easily swayed 🤣
At the end of the movie, The Count of Monte Cristo, who has way too much money at that point, buys the Chateau D'If and essentially closes down the prison. Now, while this doesn't actually happen in the novel, I could see this being a sequel of a sort if the story had gone there, in which case, the theme does make a bit more sense; Edmond Dantes leaves Chateau D'if behind, and you are coming to raid it for his vast wealth.
Got this to try out with my group for a light euro night - I really like the action selection mechanic and I think the review was accurate. If there weren’t any tactics or strategy to this it’d be Chutes and Ladders, but it definitely has enough to keep even the serious interested. The only drawback with a game like this would be if it overstayed it’s welcome and went on too long. I don’t think that is going to be a problem and I don’t see any issues with AP. I think it deserves a go and is unique. I would initially put it at 6.7
"I saw that no one had reviewed it on the dice tower" I love your reviews even if sometimes disagree but its sad that I dont get your take on a game because someone else made a review. I want to checkout your review. I might want to see your review or multiple reviews. Each reviewer has a different flavor its not the same. (If someone else understands what I mean or feels the same but can explain it more clearly help me out.)
Based on the review, I don't think I'd pick this up. The unique mechanisms really intrigue me, though. I've been looking for a good game with variable turn order that can be manipulated.

I won this game at a tournament like 9 years ago and never opened it, but about to try it this week, looks quite fun for a smaller game !

About time someone did a decent review of this, but yes everything you said is true
Agreed on the review, this has been a family favourite of ours for years!

The Secret of Monte Cristo (1961) - IMDb
Is the theme not based on this?
This seems like a game perfect for a reprint by Oink. Interesting mechanisms in an appropriately sized box.
The Secret of Monte Cristo is Gruyere!
So no one's going to bring up the sammich?
Aww... so much potential. Maybe needs to be reskinned with a new theme.
Is it just me or is that board very odd? Odd perspective, odd shading, odd scoretrack... Not ugly, quite nice actually. Just odd.
It looks better without the glare from the lights
Looks pretty ugly to me... glare or not, so much empty brown space. The art is okay, but the design definitely gets the ugly sticker from me.
