Funnily enough that's my issue with it. Giving something to everyone always feels bad, so usually its something really strong for you and then weak but for everyone else. Ex You pick any food all other players get a specific one. I get wanting to make it so everyones turn can affect everyone instead of waiting, but I still want my board to be for me and interactions to be more complicated than free stuff for everyone.
Love the video. So many differences from Wingspan and Wyrmspan. Loving the vertical tableau and the diving mechanic that you dive the entire dive site. Also being able to place fish anywhere (within restrictions) and not just next to/below a previous one. I love the eggs, young fish, and school. Being able to move around the zones looks very fun.
I have to admit that when I first saw Finspan, I thought maybe that it was a joke. Then I realized that it was a real thing, and when I thought about the ocean and all the variety of fish that there are, I got excited about what it could look like. It looks great! My wife and I were particularly enamored with the game board that each person has. The artwork for that is incredible. I’m very excited to give this a try. Thank you very much!
Yes! Love this! Wingspan pulled me in to the hobby, wyrmspan was added to my collection for OBVIOUS reasons and I will be adding finspan when it’s released too!! Can’t wait. Thank you for your video, love a good preview! ❤
As an author + publisher + content creator, you make a huge difference in the gaming world because we feel you really REALLY love games ! ❤ Can't wait to play Finspan, it feels so smooth, a bit more interactive, and you have to resolve the puzzle of making school of fish ! Icing on the cake, those fishes that are objective cards but take the same place as other fishes... What a brilliant idea ! Asking you to make choices between having many goals or having the cards to fulfill the goals. Reminds me of Castles of Burgundy, in a way. Brilliant and elegant 🤩
Hi Jamie, fellow St. Louis resident here. I love this idea!! My wife and I love Wingspan and Wyrmspan. I’ll have to add this to my shelf! Keep up the great work at SM! Thank you for demoing turns in this video.
This game looks pretty pleasing to the eyes, and I like the look of the deluxe tokens. The cards make me feel like I'm looking at entries in a catalog of fish, which is interesting because the other Span games haven't made me think like that. That's probably a testament to Finspan's uniqueness. Also, I love how the Great White Shark is just off to the side like, "Yo.."
I love it!! ❤ can’t wait for it to be on shelves in the Netherlands! Got Wyrmspan just today after a long time of Wingspan.. so excited! A fantastic game as well! Thank you for making these great games!
Thank you for this video. The trailer had me intrigued and interested in the game enough to know I plan to purchase it. This video has definitely confirmed that I will be purchasing it and am excited and anxious for the launch. I love and enjoy the small similarities and differences between WyrmSpan and Wingspan, and am anxious to add FinSpan to my collection. The art in all 3 games are stunning!
Thanks Deborah! I'm not a pro at making these types of mini-playthrough videos, so I'm glad it was still helpful for you. :) We're very fortunate to work with such great artists as Ana, Catalina, and Mesa (for Finspan), Ana and Natalia (Wingspan), and Clementine (Wyrmspan)!
I really like this. As someone who has loved the ocean and underwater documentaries since I was a small child I love the aesthetics and the theme of this game much more than Wingspan or Wyrmspan (I really like those games as well though). The idea of going on dives and eventually entering the twilight zone and the midnight zone is really appealing to me. Can't wait for this game and its deluxe components pack. :)
Looks like a very nice application of the wingspan formula and I'm excited for the release! I'm curious though, what was the design choice/philosophy for having your hand be open? The game is technically competitive since there is scoring, but having open hands seems antithetical since there's no hidden information
@jameystegmaier thanks for the speedy reply, other than the physical nature of the cards, is there any other design philosophy around open hands? The reason I ask is because I feel it may take the "suspense" or "competitive edge" away from players if all cards are known
@@thedoublehelix356 I generally play with (and advocate for) open hands unless it's a game where secrets are necessary. In Finspan you don't gain any competitive advantage over knowing what other players have in hand; at best maybe you gain a little advantage by paying attention to what they've actually played, but mostly you're just trying to optimize your strategy.
Wow🎉 I absolutely love Wingspan and this cannot be topped 😉 Wyrmspan looked really nice to me, but dragons aren ´t my thing. But now: Finspan - wow🎉 I am not into fishing, but I like the vertikal tableau with the cozy artwork, I love the diving mechanic, I love that it seems very thematic with fish eggs, hatching fish, fishschools…. The colour palette is beautiful and the gameplay looks smooth. I already love it, I hope it will be released in german, because unfortunately my wife does not want to play games which are in english language. She can speak english, but she says it is too strenous for her over a whole gameplay😢 so I hope for the best - Hello “Feuerland Games” - can you hear me?😂❤ Thank you for showing this beautiful game🎉
I love wrym gameplay but I don't care too much about Dragons. Finspan looks amazing and caught my attention because of my passion for aquatic life. My question is whether all the pre-printed fishes on the board are all the same or different on all 5 boards?
Good question! They're all the same. We considered putting them in different places, but for balance we decided to put them in the same place. But each player's hand of cards is different, so there's still starting asymmetry.
@@jameystegmaier Got it, I was hoping it would be different but understood for balance reasoning. I'm still a fan :). Does the game plays simultaniously with all players doing each dive together or is it still turn-based since there is no public market.
@@naylormarketing It's still turn-based because of the numerous positive-interaction cards, but it's easy to play by indicating to the next player at the start of your turn if you don't have any such abilities, and they can start to take their turn while you take yours.
Looks fun, but are the egg/young fish and school tokens final or just place holders? They really clash with the beautiful art of the board and cards, especially for a game series known for its visuals.
I was really dubious about this announcement of yet another Xspan game when Wyrmspan seemed to be quite divisive already. Saw a good video from Alex from BoardGameCo pointing out how many other games have multiple versions of the same game like Clank, Pandemic, and Carcassonne which helped put things into perspective for me, so when I saw this video I was willing to find out more. I'm glad I did because this game looks really good. I'm extremely interested in the positive player interaction aspect of it. Though I would like to know more about the strategic depth and how you've balanced out positive player interaction against being able to make meaningful decisions to feel satisfyingly competitive. I hate negative player interactions in games, but I still want to feel like I had a battle of minds and if I win I want to feel like I played the game better and earned the win. Now a theme that I would personally be super excited about would be a pond span game. Frogs, toads, newts, salamanders, dragonflies, fish, snails, damselflies, water boatmen, pond skimmers. Lots of things in a pond which lay eggs and you could have such amazing art of such beautiful creatures. I feel like the next most obvious thing to add to the series would be butterflies, moths, and their caterpillars ... but consider that newts, frogs, and snails are a more unique realm to explore.
Thanks for sharing this! We'd like to add more aquatic animals to the game; feel free to mention your favorites on this form: forms.gle/pWAVrEVPPqQyiQHA8
Wonderful iconography as always. I especially like the right-hand border of cards matching the dive site the fish need to be placed in. How was that idea discovered? It's a really subtle but powerful piece of UX.
Looks beautiful! Do all the player boards have the same art? I love the verticality. I also really like the look of the puzzle of placing, and then later moving, the fish to form the schools.
Finspan is designed to be lighter than Wingspan. (And much lighter than Wyrmspan) Some mechanics that make it lighter are that there aren’t different types of food (you just pay cards), and there’s no open market of cards to select from (you just draw from a deck).
Board size looks like it could be super problematic from a table space stance. (Camera panning def. drew attention - any comparison or dimensions you can share?) I’m trying to figure if I could play with more than two (assuming we need to sit side by side to fit.
Always having a lot of cards in the hand might be a nightmare for AP players… aaand you can replace already played fish, I’m getting ap just thinking about it.
I appreciate that, Michael. This unscripted video took me about an hour to prepare for and film, but it would take 2-3 more hours to personally caption it (I've done it before, and it really does take that long). That's a lot to ask of someone. Do the captions that RUclips automatically provides really not help much?

I love how much positive player interaction there seems to be in the game and it looks beautiful on the table. Looking forward to Finspan!

I guess in future games, you could put fish cards over the pre printed fish, as part of set up, to increase the asymmetry.

Thanks! Michael had that idea, and Christine made it colorblind friendly (different patterns).
Please let there be an app version of this.
Digital versions of games take a few years to create, so there will likely be a digital version in around 3 years.
Thanks for the introduction to Finspan! In terms of complexity where does this fall in the Wingspan family?
Finspan is slightly lighter than Wingspan.
With the fish that are printed on the boards, are all the board identical?
Yes, the boards are identical, but each player starts with a hand of 5 different cards (all cards are unique).
Love this!!!!
Looks beautiful! Do all the player boards have the same art? I love the verticality. I also really like the look of the puzzle of placing, and then later moving, the fish to form the schools.
Also, are the school tokens the same on both sides? Thanks.
@@Stormlight8700 yes and yes. All the boards are the same and the school tokens are the same on both sides.
Same art, yes--this type of detailed illustration takes a lot of time! :) The school tokens are the same on both sides (just facing different ways).
How does it compare to wingspan and wyrmspan in terms of difficulty to play? How heavy is it?
Finspan is designed to be lighter than Wingspan. (And much lighter than Wyrmspan) Some mechanics that make it lighter are that there aren’t different types of food (you just pay cards), and there’s no open market of cards to select from (you just draw from a deck).
Looks amazing but what are the dimensions of the board? Think I'm gonna need a new table for this one 😂
Check out the Finspan page of our website-it’s noted there (just slightly bigger than the Wingspan board).
The game looks really fun! The most important question though: I've seen there are sharks in the game, but will there be a blue shark, too? 😁
Not in the core game, but in a future shark pack!
@jameystegmaier Ooh, a shark pack sounds great! 🦈
Board size looks like it could be super problematic from a table space stance.
(Camera panning def. drew attention - any comparison or dimensions you can share?)
I’m trying to figure if I could play with more than two (assuming we need to sit side by side to fit.
It's just a few centimeters bigger than the Wingspan board. Staggering the boards (or sitting side by side works.
Looks like it takes up less space than Wingspan which is nice.
A little bit less due to less stuff being in the middle of the table, though the player mats are a little bigger than Wingspan.
Quick question here : do all boards have the same pre-printed fishes on it ? Or is it more like an asymetric start ? Thx !
They do (for balance), but each player starts with a hand of 5 different cards than anyone else.
I’m intrigued, does everyone have this huge player board though? Wondering how big a table would be needed for a 4-player setup.
Absolutely, everyone has their own player mat. It's barely bigger than the Wingspan player mat. You can stagger them to fit on a normal table.
@ good to hear. Hard to tell scale. Thanks!
There will be a Spanish version? :D Can't wait to play it
There will be! :) From Maldito. They can provide more information.
@@jameystegmaierthank you!

Yes there is a solo mode. The Automa Factory logo is on the cover.
Of course! It's a 1-5 player game. :)
I know whales are no fish. But are there whales in the game?
There’s a whale shark, but mammals like whales will come in a future expansion.
I couldn’t concentrate on that video, I was too distracted by the slippers
They're comfy!
