- We're back with more softlocking! This time in steel soul mode. The idea for this video was suggested by a comment on received on the original softlock video and after thinking about it for a while, I finally discovered something that works!

Six months later she quits waiting and tries to find the knight. She finds the knight crying in the junk pit using a chest as a bed
I’m imagining the Radiance just sitting there with the hollow knight, waiting for our knight to finally come and fight her. Meanwhile our knight is just chilling in a chest with the unconscious godseeker next to them.

in extension you don't need to be playing on steel soul either for this to be a softlock as you cannot die to form a shade anyways.

You can softlock yourself in lake of unn. You do the beginning of the game normally, only you buy a map from cornifer. You need to enter the hornet fight with full soul. Do the map glitch to walk past hornet without fighting her, then use a single fireball to clear the first acid gap. Then, go into the left room leading to lake of unn using your remaining 2 fireballs. Bench at lake of unn, and you are softlocked. Shade skips don't work because it spawns too far to the right to notice you. The way the platforms are arranged, you cannot do the same fireball skips to go back. I did this a while ago, and haven't found an escape yet. Try it out for yourself if you would like!

can you kill hornet and not pick up the cloak to make it glitchless or would you be able to go back and get it?

I'm glad I didn't do this unintentionally when I did low%. It actually seems like quite a plausible scenario if you just mess around with minimal powerups 😂
low% doesnt get dive so i think you would have been fine

I’m glad people are still finding new ways to have fun with this game, even if it’s just finding out how to not be able to play on that file anymore.

Someday I’d like to see this become a speedrun category called “Escape from softlock” where you do all the steps shown in the video but you get dreamnail first and now the only way to beat the game is to get godhome ending

@@jis11 not all of them actually. for example, god tamer shows up even if you didnt do trial of the fool. but still, you havent gotten any bosses that you do need, so the pantheons would still be locked.
You could get soul in the Godhome hot spring and then fireball skip out of Junk Pit, couldn't you?
This is totally escapable (on the correct patch)! Just get wall cling storage and do like 100 frame perfect inputs to fly out of the room!

So, fun story:
I just attempted a run where I tried to reach Godhome registering as few bosses as possible (False Knight, Vengefly King, Soul Warrior, Soul Master)
When I got to Junk Pit, I realized forgot to bring a second key down with me, and interacting with the coffin at all hardsaves you there...
As it turns out, the route I took follows this softlock almost down to the letter (with the only difference being getting dream nail instead of saving sly)...
I am genuinely speechless

A soft lock occurs when you can't progress in the game regardless of skill level _but is fixable by restarting the game._
A *_hard_* lock happens when literally _nothing_ you do can get you out of it outside of erasing the save file and starting over.
and what about if you're in a position where you aren't hardlocked but it is physically impossible to progress without having astronomical luck or centuries of time to grind? (watch 'pokemon softlocks', some guy made a bunch)

I've heard a different definition. As I understood it, a hard lock is when the game becomes unresponsive. Some kind of glitched state in which you cannot move around or do anything else that meaningfully affects the game. A soft lock on the other hand still allows you to play the game and all of its processes will function normally, but you have no way to progress.
@@EmperorZ19 That first scenario you described isn't a hard lock. That's just a crash.
@@veroxid A crash is when the program stops running entirely. That's different from the program becoming unresponsive. When a program is unresponsive, stuff is still happening in the background.
Heck, sometimes you can still see that the program is still running. One example I encountered was when I was playing Arkham Origins. I went to exit an area through a door, but when Batman stepped through, he just walked offscreen and the next area didn't load. Ambient sounds still played, and you could see environmental animations playing such as lights flickering, but the game was completely unresponsive to player input

Yooo, I saw this and wanted to try it. I was able to replicate it (mostly) legitimately. The fireball skip in Mantis Village felt absurdly precise, and I eventually got tired of going back and getting soul so I used infinite soul for it; I did get it in full speed though, which felt kinda awesome.

yeah ive actually seen a few reddit posts of people falling in this softlock
it usually happens to people trying to get to godhome with the least amount of bosses killed and they forget the second simple key

fun fact I actually was able to Traverse the whole Royal waterways without desolate dive including every item which was a pain but I still did it because I didn't know where the desolate dive was
i imagine there could be some softlocks on steel soul where you get somewhere thats only leavable with a shade skip?
But, how would you get to that place? By a shade skip probably, and you can't. So that's why they are so hard to find

One thing that always amused me is that you needed a simple key to open up the entrance to godhome like many of the other locks in the game. I feel like it should have been its own separate key that you acquire mid-game behind a mechanic preventing this situation from happening.

@@FIREOWLHK low% completes the whole game without dash. At this point of the run there is only fireball avaliable and it's enough. The skip is still very hard.

You may have said how and I missed it but how does having and not having soul when you pick up the godtuner make a difference?
if you have soul you can use it to fireball skip out near the platforms where you previously couldn't make the jump

Is this the only place you could softlock yourself? I suppose you can't kill the dreamers to get stuck spawning at them, but are there any other benches that are in places you can go to but not escape?
What do you mean you can’t kill the dreamers? They don’t require a shade skip or anything like that.
you should check out the softlocking playlist, there are tons more ways. this is one of the only ones that works in steel soul

You can not escape from this because you can climb the wall because there is a small spot you can jump off of but there is also another ledge above it that you need another movement ability

Another question I have is would it be possible to softlock in the birthplace cutscene? I really doubt it, but it would be very interesting If you could somehow get Kingsoul and Kingsbrand without wall jump.
you need pretty much all abilities for white palace so i dont think so. it is and interesting idea though
@@FIREOWLHK would normal dash be required with some fancy saw bounces? Maybe an easier way would to be find a way to glitch into the birthplace egg room without shadecloak
@@cccc8141 you dont need dash but im pretty sure as long as you have claw, you can escape the abyss climb
@@FIREOWLHK could you? I think their are a few jumps you need either dash and claw or wings and claw to make, though I may be mistaken, I haven't studied the abyss climb in a while.

Perhaps a silly question, but what makes this unique to steel soul? Is it harder to softlock in steel soul, and would this not be a softlock in normal mode?
It's harder because you can't use shade skip to get into inescapable locations.
This is a soft lock in any mode, it’s just way harder to soft lock in steel soul

fireball skips work on consoles. if not try the first softlock (ancient basin one)

Then that breaks the NMG rule. You can’t use wallcling storage if you can’t go to that room normally
@@Firefly256 hes not nesceseraly going by nmg rules. And you can get there if you have soul. Which is why the soul gage is emptied beaforehand so that the soft lock works.
