- Need campsite cooking on the griddle ideas? If you’re planning to take your griddle or flat top grill with you on the go, then check out this video of the portable Pit Boss Ultimate Griddle!
We recently had a family reunion in Georgia, and we needed to feed a crowd at a campsite. So we loaded up the Ultimate Pit Boss Griddle with the lift off feature , put it in the trunk of my wife’s mid-size SUV, and drove with our prepped ingredients to a state park a few hours away.
In this video, I’ll take you behind the scenes of getting everything prepped and ready to go for campsite cooking on the flat top grill.
I’ll show you how to use the lift-off feature of the portable griddle, how to prep your ingredients so there’s no hassle at the campsite, and how to make delicious sausages with peppers and onions on the flat top grill to feed a crowd! And I’ll also show you my hack for traveling with a propane tank, whether you’re just going down the street to fill it up, or you’re taking it camping with your griddle!
Enjoy!

Neil I want to let you know that I watch you and Amy all the "tom" with your cooking on the Flat Top Grill. I know you are saying "time" but here on the west coast it sounds like "tom." Keep up the good work!
That is awesome! hahahahaha...you should hear me say 9
Video works now and worth the wait. We have a 22” Blackstone that we use camping. I learn so much from your videos and watch every one. Keep it up!
Hey thats great…. Had me worried
Man I got to tell you you have a beautiful family all the way around you all have beautiful heart and you all teach people to be positive and to help each other I think your family and you for what you all do teaching the world positivity God bless you all Amen brother
Very nice to hear you say that. Much appreciated
This is the first time that I have seen your "boss" / better half. I do have to say, great video, BUT she is BETTER looking! LOL
Hahahahah yeah I married up…
Fulltime RVers here. I use the flat top almost every day, sometimes 3 times a day. I love it and love your videos!
Glad you like them! Awesome...We would love to RV but grinding way right now
Nice family... I bought a portable camp chef after watching your videos. I appreciate all the time you put into the info. I've gotten really good with it thanks to you. One of the best purchases I've made
Hey that's a great comment right there and thats what its all about
I love this. I have to drive when we go somewhere because I have to be in control. Your dad is way better looking 😂 and this cook rocks. Way to please a family, a lot of family. 🙌🏻❤️
Hahahahaha I will tell him. Hes a hoot
Great tip about the milk crate, and those brats look delicious👍😊
Thanks Bobbi
Enjoyed this traveling griddle 😀
Being from WI brats and beer is king! It's a staple up here! I usually use cheap beer and save the good stuff to drink! Lol! Everyone has their preference! Loved the video!
Hahaha…
Thanks for showing me some "Fair Food" that was me you were talking to (Good Clean Fun was a YT channel that my son and I did a while back). I love cooking for others like that. For me, it's a Scouting thing.
Hey buddy see we do read the comments 😂😂😂😂🤣. Yeah that was a good one.
Wow those looked really good!!! I so want a brat right now!!! Great video thank you!!!
those were good with that beer and seasoning....
Love your flat top king T-shirt, I’m definitely buying one. Great video my brother and continue posting them. Gracias!
Thanks for all your support Miguel.
Nice n wholesome Nate. Glad your family had a good time
Neil, whatever family event you were cooking for they were for sure some lucky people! Great job brother
I appreciate that!
Man I’m order my 3 burner right now from Lowes been watching you for a minute thank ya for vids

What a great family get together and showing the versatility of that griddle. And knucklehead #4, yeah that’s you Neal…..haha did an awesome job on those brats! Beer peppers and onions, looks delicious! Definitely the smell is fairground aroma! Say hi to your dad! Cheers brother!
Hahahhaha. My 3 knuckle heads
Beautiful family!
Haven’t cooked beer brats in a while. I might have to try that with boudin 🤔. Great idea!
Hi dad!!!! Love me some camping and beers with friends and family!!!🍻🍻🍻
Wow, those brats looked amazing.
TY
Neat idea and great results, love having your family enjoy the experience. Good parenting too.
Much appreciated
Those looked delicious. If I was in the shelter next to you I bet I could smell those brats and be jealous. You have a beautiful family and that would have been a fun trip. We visited Ruby Falls there a couple years ago. It is beautiful in Chattanooga.
Yeah thats a great place. We had a blast.
You’re an inspiration brother. Keep it up and I’m still trying to decide on what flattop while I love camping too. Decisions decisions.
Thanks...if you get down to two and need the push I wont sugar coat it...
Would love to see you do more like this
Ahahahaah I agree. I would like to have time to do it.
That was great!!! Nice to see your family!!!
Thanks buddy. Had a blast. Nice to see them all
You had me at "cold beer". Just ordered the 3 burner. Can´t wait to fire it up.
HAHHAHAHAH thats awesome
Flat Top King, I really liked this one. Sausage, onions, and peppers are one of my favorite meals. I always add a little garlic and Lea & Perrin to the mix and it always turns out delicious. I've not tried the Brats, but typically use pork and venison. My wife and the rest of the family loves it. I'll try the beer you added to see how that works. Looks great.
Hey Terry…. We had a blast. The garlic and w sauce sounds great. We had fun. Nice to see eem
Great video! Perfect for feeding a large group
We take our griddle every time we camp
Every weekend???
Great video, love the seasoning to veggies...Smooth sailing shipmate

When I got my Camp Chef few years ago, I got the portable version which works well for home and at camp. That Pit Boss looks like a nice set up as well.
Especially the maintenance free style.
Awesome switchup Brotha! Thats super dope you are able to take full size flattop out Camping, and not have to have a truck/trailer to strap down like a Blackstone full size!! Nice to meet your Dad btw. Excellent episode Y’all ✊🏼🧐, Cheers 👊🏼😎🤙🏼
Thanks Mike. Had a blast. Nice to see the extended family
Loved the video!
Thank you!!
Vid working now , food looks great, thanks for sharing.
Love the camping video and the tips!! My camping Griddle is
one that fits over 2 burner camp chief stove. Been using it for 20 years. I pre cook and cut up potatoes
and seal a meal them for breakfast.

Omg now I know I love those tips❤
This was totally cool! We love brats, I recently did a kielbasa with kapusta, and it was awesome! Bacon, drained sauerkraut, and canned potatoes right on the flat top, then add the meat. Oh, my phone is working again🙄🤣
I see ya……. Now we need a ftg for the side of a motor cycle
Great idea!!! Thanks!!
Thanks
I have to say the detachable body is great. Too bad my BS 36 doesn't do that. I packed it to Texas for an extended stay at our son's house last fall. That sucker takes up some room. I felt it when you grunted putting the top on in the car. 🤣
Hahahahahha. Laughing because i felt it too…. Yeah its a cool feature
Good ol Dade County Georgia. Home!
Hey now….. pretty country that way.
My wife generally drives because I get so stressed out, particularly in traffic. I grew up in a small town, which even today doesn't have any traffic lights and little traffic. For long trips, or weather/nights, I do the driving.
I just picked up the Camp Chef Explorer 2 burner for camping/tailgating, and have the single burner griddle accessory arriving tomorrow.
I wanted the flexibility for something like Brats, where I could use a stock pot on one burner, but have the griddle on the other side.
If I really like it, I'm leaning towards the CC 4-burner flat top to replace our Char broil 3 burner grill at home.
That’s awesome. My cc is 3 years old and has taken a beating and keeps ticking…, cant go wrong.
Seeing the onions and peppers, made me think, have you done fajitas yet? I’d like to see your twist on them. Thanks!
Yes I have...check em out...steak fajitas on the griddle...
This was awesome
Fantastic content, as always! I see your metal spatulas under the PitBoss on this picnic. Have you become comfortable using stainless steel on the ceramic cooktop?
This is definitely a hot button topic… And my answer would be that you have to use metal utensils AT YOUR OWN RISK. The actual Pit Boss Ultimate griddle manual says “non-metallic utensils”. I know of a handful of Ultimate griddle owners that have been using metal utensils on their griddles for a while and they’ve said that there hasn’t been any damage… but like I said, you have to use at your own risk - I’m sure that Pit Boss probably won’t replace your griddle top for you if you damage it with metal utensils. Also, there’s a difference in the types of metal spatulas... my preferred spatula has rounded edges and does NOT have the sharp beveled edges all around. That’s the spatula that I like for my other griddles as well. I would never use a square ended, beveled edge spatula on mine. Also, you’ll notice that I still use a wooden scraper/spatula to actually scrape down the griddle surface (NOT a metal bench scraper like I use on my other griddles). So the short answer is use metal at your own risk, and if you decide to use metal on yours, be careful about which metal utensils you’re using and how you use them on the surface.
The portability of the Pit boss is very good. Considering how many folks you were cooking for to bad you didn't have rwo. Now a couple of tips I thought I should mention. First you're right about preparing things like chopped fruits and vegetables ( peppers are fruit). I learned many years ago that when doing something like this keep the different ingredients separately bagged. Some of these things don't play well with others for extended periods of time. Ask me how I know 😳. Mushy peppers are not a good thing. Last thing. Next time you do beer brats char all the fruits and vegetables before throwing them in with the beer. I can't emphasize enough what a difference it makes. Oh one last thing. Great call on telling folks to transport their propane tanks in milk crates. I do the same thing when using my propane heater out in my boat while salmon fishing. I have never had a bottle tip over ever and I'm fishing on the mighty Columbia River. So yuppers great tip for your viewer's. Have a great day.
Thanks for the Tips Victor……
@@TheFlatTopKing yep that milk crate tip alone made this video worth it! I have always struggled transporting tanks!
OMG your going to Cloudland Canyon park that’s actually in Georgia, which is where I live. I know this is an old video but cool you have family in the area.
So cool! half of my family lives in Atl or around there and the other half lives in east tn...
I’m originally from Alabama and been a Tennessee all my life. Moved to Ga and life as a Volunteer sure is easier here than around all the BAMA Jammers!!! Lol 😂
great video i do the same with beer broth for brats. what company makes your shirt?
I have no idea...its a shirt my wife bought me...if you are talking about my merch store its made by tee spring
@@TheFlatTopKing thanks. it was the shirt with the sort of hawaiian vibes going. your wife got good taste!
Awesome thanks
“That’s why they pay me the little bucks.”😆
Good lord those looked SO GOOD! What a perfect video. Thanks for including us on your picnic. Question: what should the finished temperature be on a sausage (so we don’t get sick)? 🇨🇦👍🏼
Good question! 160 degrees
Great Channel 👍 REALLY APPRECIATE THE COOKING TIPS 👍👍 can you cook ribs on a griddle ?
I mean yeah you can COOK but you cant do a low and slow style...
Looks like a great time. Great food, great company and some beers in the outdoors usually equates to a great time. We went camping this weekend too and had some great food on our friend's flat top. What kind of watch are you wearing? I can't pause the video without a blur to get a good look. Hope you had a great time camping FTK and family.
We had a blast…. Love my family. I have a big one because my grandma was a twin.
Citizen eco drive
Another great video. It would be great if one these companies would give you a 22" or 27" griddle. I take a 22" griddle camping and it can be a challenge when I start cooking for more than 2 or 3 people. I would love to get some tips on cooking on a smaller griddle. Just an idea.
Thanks
Yeah thats a great point. Haven’t thought of it that way.
Lol my wife does all the driving too, but mainly because I make her carsick with my driving. 😆

I have em and havent used yet...I will try to use them to test out...

Thanks. My grill is on the way and I'm trying to figure out which spatulas to get
Very nice job, it looks so easy, and enjoyable 😉
We had fun…
Suggestion: next time cooking with beer give Modelo Negra a try.. It is the best beer I've found to cook with, just the smell of it when cooking will fire up your taste buds. There is something going on that regular beers never achieve. Especially good with borracho beans, stews and steams.
That would be the toasted malt which give it the color as well.
Another great video! I’ve watched many of your earlier videos (2020) and it appears that you’ve lost a lot of weight! Good for you! I need to lose some myself. Mind sharing how you did it? Or, did you buy a camera with a skinny lens? Hahahaha!
XXL slim 😂😂😂😂😂😂. Honestly 60 lbs. low carb and fasting. Thanks for the comment
Man I'm torn between this pitboss vs the blacktop. I like the option to take it with me to a park. Do you taste any difference on the surfaces?
I do not.....easy to care for and does everything you need it to do
What’s The reasoning for using two pans? Love the videos..
I had mentioned before about the dangers of derp frying on the flat top grill. Especially using metal pans. I doubled them just incase I accidentally poked a hole or something like that. All that liquid has nowhere to go. So just pure precaution.
What’s your opinion on the 22” Blackstone? My husband and I are thinking of taking one for tailgating for away games. Or do you know of another smaller, portable flat top that may be useful?
Well i havent used a 22in blackstone...I have used my pit boss 3 burner and I love it...especially for the fact if your only using it sparingly the ceramic coated top is amazing. zero problems, and maintenance free and I think thats the kicker...free maintenance.no seasoning, no re seasoning, no rust etc...
Do you guys live in TN? I am about 1 1/2 from Chattanooga. Great videos.
We do. Knoxville
@@TheFlatTopKing We live down in Lake Tansi in Crossville. We may need to hook up and cook sometime. I love my smokers but bought the PitBoss sierra yesterday. Happy cooking.
@@steveknight3921 happy cooking
Neil. Is it safe to leave propane tank in the car during the summer for traveling. We took our pit boss to tailgate last weekend and using the 1 lb canisters with an adapters to fit and could not get up to a high enough temp for smash burgers sear.
Well I honestly dont know. Maybe I can ask a buddy.
Highest safe storage temp is usually 120 degrees. Avoid direct sunlight. Tank shouldn’t be left in a parked vehicle for very long. This assumes the vehicle is air conditioned where the tank is. This is also why tanks are only filled to 80 %, so there is room for expansion.
With all the technology we have. Why are these phones should be scratch and sniff. Definitely gonna try this
Ahhahahhaha i have said the same thing many times
Never tried brats like that. Will try! Quick question with one propane, how long does it last? How many times are you cooking in a day?
yeah thats an answer I have never been able to answer...I have 7 tanks and use the griddles often...its just extremely hard to keep track of....when filming we have it on and most people would not....we are not the norm for sure..
@@TheFlatTopKing wow that's a lot of tanks. A
How about for a camping trip? How many did you take with you?
@@ErwinLeader ooohhh just one. But a full one. And that’s also dependent on how long a camping etc.
hey if the griddle non stick coating goes bad. can you buy another cooking top?
Yes,,,they have that option....
I see a Air Force/Navy tailgate in your future 😎 Score one for versatility of Pit Boss?
Im taking you up...talk soon
Do you have a link for the milk crate?
I do not...
Chattanooga your 15 minutes from me when you come to Chatt.
Hey Neal, Noticed that the Pit Boss cover was having an issue while U opened it, Is it a flaw in the Pit Boss ????
No the heat was to much for it for that long.....it was warping at the end but once the heat cooled down it relaxed and was fine...
How did the buns get warm? The grill was full.
The sun in the package...its really warms em up..
Found you from @Waltwins. I am team #blackstone but am open to techniques and tips for a flat top.
Hey welcome to the Family....
How warm does the surface of the picnic table get while cooking?
It dosen't...or at least from my point of view..
@@TheFlatTopKing Thank you. Love the channel, keep up the good cooking!
@@IDBoater1 thanks Forest.
So you would put this on those folding plastic 6ft tables with no problem with heat from underneath the unit?
Quick question. Do you need to season this griddle after each use like a traditional cast iron griddle?
I do...light oil on the pit boss as well....
@@TheFlatTopKing when you season it do you cook it off or do you season it cold?
Can't believe you didn't have Dad decked out in FTK swag................. Oh well, family fun gathering is more important anyway.
