What a sight seeing this massive ship passing through the Superior Canal.
Just think, some lucky person/s got to watch the first ore ever shipped from Superior in November 1892. He and/or she might have watched from right where Mike was capturing this video.
The ore came from the Misabi Range at Mountain Iron, MN. That vessel was a 252 foot whaleback freighter built in nearby Duluth.....Barge 102.
Boy have ore carriers changed!! www.reddit.com/r/ModelShips/comments/17t4t9s/great_lakes_whaleback_barge/

It's always a great day for me any day I can see a ship from my "Holy Trinity" of ships. The JRB, the Tregurtha & the Arthur M Anderson. What a Big beautiful ship. The only thing that would have made it even greater would have been if all of us boat buddies could have gotten to listen to Captain Brad Newland hit those wonderful JRB horns in a Master's Salute, Thanks Mike!!! Can't wait to hear about our boat buddies surprise you have planned!

I realize that it's cheaper and more efficient (and less damaging perhaps?) and perhaps even safer to not have a superstructure on the front of a laker, as in the older, traditional designs. But this ship and those after it look too much like ocean-going container ships. That unique distinctiveness is sorely missed by me, at least.

Great question. How deep / wide / long ship canal:
The canals length is 0.33 miles (0.53 k). The canal is maintained at 245 feet (75 m) wide. Depth: 28 to 32 feet in the entrance; 27 feet deep in the iron-ore route channels, and 20 to 23 feet in the inner channels. Here’s a little more information about dredging the canal. It’s a few years old, but the article still is relevant. www.lre.usace.army.mil/Media/News-Releases/Article/2289075/wisconsin-company-to-dredge-duluth-superior-harbor/ (www.lre.usace.army.mil/Media/News-Releases/Article/2289075/wisconsin-company-to-dredge-duluth-superior-harbor/)

@@vibewithmike we are in the high desert, no cacti up here, mostly sage brush. But the land has it's own beauty

Winter coats are always a fashion accesory in Duluth. I remember taking my mother to games at Wade Stadium back in the '90's. We always brought our winter coats with us.

Corporal! Great hearing from you. I’ve been told many times now that I should not put my winter clothes away until the Fourth of July. Is that for real? And a way I know it seems like a joke but maybe it is for real? Thanks again for watching the ship video.

@@vibewithmike No, not a joke. I remember leaving Wade Stadium in August and watching heavy fog roll in between the CN docks. I remember many trips to Silver Bay to load pellets and it was always so cold no matter what time of year. We used to call it Shiver Bay. I remember leaving Taconite Harbor on a windy July afternoon and seeing a few snowflakes.

@corporaldigbygeste7640 corporal, it’s like I was able to go back in time with you and I felt like I was there the way you described everything. Also, I hope I never am able to tell the story of snowflakes in July.😂😂😂😂👍👍👍👍❄️❄️❄️❄️⛴️⛴️⛴️
