Wow. As someone who paddles in a confused tidal rip with big waves, I am familiar with how GoPro makes it look. I can tell this is BIG! Bucking bronco ride-- way to hold on!! Your videos are impressive-- big waves on that lake!!!
Beautiful video of paddling on Lake Superior. Great wave and swell action. You can see the waves inside of the bigger swells. I / we love to paddle in the Pacific ocean off Ventura, CA. The waves and swell are much bigger and vary with storms far off in the Pacific ocean. I have paddled out over 1 to 2 miles out of the harbor in Oxnard, CA into the Pacific ocean. There are even kayak cave trips out to the Channel islands national park. There are several to many caves and islands over 15 miles off the mainland.
Fascinating perspective. Many years ago as a young man I did the summers of my university years working on US Steel ore boats and made dozens of trips in and out of Duluth harbor, but this offers a completely different experience. Not nearly as exciting as this when you coast in on a 600 footer. Unless the the wheelsman, perhaps.
Good job there, looked pretty technical to me - the sort of conditions that only feels like fun when you’re back on shore! Reminded me of a gnarly session with a few blokes, I spent a bit of time bracing 5-6ft wind swell off the rear quarter, when I got a tip in no uncertain terms from one of the more experienced guys - “just f*cking paddle!!!” Needless to say it was good advice 😅. Thanks for the vid 👍
Thank you for the great camera angle, looking at Canal Cam you would think relatively smooth sailing. 🤔I didn't hear the announcement as you came through the canal, name of ship, length, year built, how many tons, hatches, engines?
The canal can be crazy, or not, and can change minute to minute - it makes things interesting! I am also disappointed the maritime museum didn’t describe out arrival, maybe next time! 😹
Wow! Not for amateurs or the faint of heart! Was the video sped up? Or did it really only take about 4 minutes to cover that distance? And what became of your friend? He seemed to disappear before you got to the bridge!
I really thought this was a video game for about 3 minutes lol. I was like “is this real?, yeah it is, wait no it isn’t, can’t be” lol Great video man!!! This looks like fun for you but not me lol. Great job. ❤
In the Pacific ocean we have a large population of dolphins with 2 different kinds just off the shore between the channel islands and the shore. We even have great white sharks, huge grey wales, and sea lions. The sea lions are all over the harbor areas and on most every ocean navigation buoy. It is very easy to paddle in areas only about 1/2 mile off shore where depths are under 100 feet. However, out a few miles the depth is down to below 2,000 feet. On the other side of the Channel islands the ocean quickly drops to over 5,000 feet and much deeper. Paddlers do travel the about 15 miles to the nearest Channel islands. There are many ocean oil rigs maybe 5 miles off the shore. The island packers will take you and your kayak to the nearby island to paddle into the leeward side ocean level caves. At a lower tide kayaks can paddle into many island caves for a great day of paddling.
Freaking insane conditions! Not a spot you want to take a swim! How much current is pushing out of there to stack them up like that?? I was surprised they ran in as far as they did.
I am not sure what the current was at that time. There are lights on the north tower that indicate the strength and direction of the current but I was a bit too busy to check them out and they are too hard to see in the video. We had had a ton of rain so there was potential for a lot of current although I didn’t sense it so much on this particular run. The current through and beyond the canal can be very complex, especially with incoming swell. I have learned that how the current behaves and where it presents can change minute to minute. You never now what you’re going to get!
Great footage, Tim. I suspect one would not want to be in the canal with bigger boats or ships. Lots of sidewise movement and speed shifts. Do you ever get too close to each other?
Paul, I would never enter the canal with a ship, way too dangerous. I have a marine radio to monitor traffic. I give ships a wide birth and I also look behind me on downwinds as I wouldn’t want a 1000 footer sneaking up on me 😸.
@@ttrayn1000 Splash tops and bottoms are waterproof shells. I wear them over neoprene for extra protection. Good that you wore neoprene, though. Some people think all you need are a pair of jeans!

Thanks! Yes, that darn GoPro effect on wave size! Where do you paddle?
I thought waves got high on Lake Washington in Seattle, but these swells are something else.
Yes, experienced paddlers have told me Superior can have ocean-like conditions.
Why we call it "The Inland Sea"!! Come paddle!!
There are videos here that have maga waves hitting Duluth. High enough to go over the walls of the canal.
Are you kidding. Comparing Lake Washington to Lake Superior? There aren’t 2000 wrecks in Lk Washington. Seriously.
Incredible. Crazy conditions. Some of the best footage I’ve ever seen
Thanks! 😺
Looks like a blast and just absolutely beautiful video. We'll see ya out there sometime I'm sure!
Unbelievable. Lake Superior is a beast.
Paddler from Lake Ontario here... mad skillz and balls of titanium, my man. We get big waves here, but nothing like that.
Nice to hear from another Great Lakes paddler!
Super interesting perspective. Holding my breath while watching to make sure you made it was something else altogether…

Well done! Reflected waves like that are my nemesis.
Yes, reflected waves are difficult! But I get a lot of practice with them at this end of the Lake.

Nicely done! Tricky water.
Randomly recommended to my feed!
Epic stuff!
The camera always shrinks the waves so that musta been pretty gnarly!
Glad you enjoyed it! You’re right about the GoPro minimizing the size of the waves!

Great advice! I have learned the same.
Looks so fun! You paddle like a pro, bro! Great skills!! 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Dam you and your partner made great time. Very cool
Outstanding !!!
Awesome👍
It can, and does, get MUCH more entertaining than this. The canal offers "confused seas" that get pretty sporty. SURF'S UP, DUDE!! Paddle on👍🏻
GOOD TIMES!! 🤙 😎
That looked like fun. Scary but fun.
Great stuff Tim!
Thanks Rhett!

This to me is a little scary, I have never been on a small kayak or canoe in this kind of water.
It was a little scary for me too. 😸
Is the camera on a drone?
No, it’s on a mast at the stern of my ski.

Duh😂😂
Where is the technical part LOL
Looks fake
Dang, I didn’t think anyone would figure that out. 😹
I thought that too. Mainly because they aren't wearing splash gear and Superior is COLD not matter what time of year.
I am not sure what “splash gear” is but we were wearing neoprene. I paddle when it is significantly colder with an appropriate wetsuit.
