Join me as I explore the American Century at the Superior Midwest Energy Terminal dock, where it was loading coal. Inside the ship, meet Jennifer, the passionate chief cook who loves taking care of the crew with her delicious meals. From pizza night, Taco Tuesday, to her famous cowboy burgers, Jennifer shares her culinary expertise and dedication to making the crew feel at home. She also prepares brisket and experiments with other recipes to ensure the crew enjoys their meals. I showcase her spotless kitchen and the dining room prepared for an upcoming meal.
Mike Briner, who is well-known in the industry, explains various ship operations during our tour. We cover the hatch crane and the lookout area, answering common questions from ship enthusiasts. My tour covers the entire deck from stern to bow, offering unparalleled views and insights into the daily operations of this colossal vessel. You’ll see many fascinating aspects of the ship that you have to watch the video to fully appreciate.
In the second half of the video, we watch the American Century depart from the water on the Boat Friends Boat. The unique part of this video is that after touring and speaking with the crew, we now watch the ship in action. I follow the ship in the Boat Friends Boat, capturing the best perspectives as it leaves the dock, passes through the Duluth Aerial Lift Bridge with a horn salute, and heads out onto Lake Superior.

Congrats on getting onboard. It makes me laugh when you see the ladder gangway. These ships are at these ports so often it’s amazing they don’t have a better gangway. That they use. Is there a part 2 coming of the parts you didn’t show?

@@vibewithmike Often, when a ship is entering the canal entering the harbor you can actually hear them unlocking the hatches. If you get a next time on the deck of a ASC ship and get a chance to talk to a crew member a close up of how the hatch locks work would be so cool That Chef sure does prepare some great sounding meals!
@KenHartman152 there will be many awesome videos like this coming. I promise I will get many other things, including the pilot house, engine room, and other things that we want to see. I didn’t want it get everything in one video so we could have other videos that are just as fun with different aspects of a ship.
@@vibewithmike I use to watch a channel called "Joe Franta ship" he was a person that hired on to work as a crew member of ocean freighter ships and he would go into detail about all the various maintenance jobs they also did on the ships.

I thought about you and all of our friends as I went up that ladder to board the ship. I really did! It made my heart happy. We are just getting started with the fun and adventures on these ships. It was really fun talking to the chief Cook as she talked about all the favorite meals and showed us some grab and go snacks for the crew on the ship.👍⛴️
Boat Friends, I saw firsthand how Mike B. and the other American Steamship Company employees interacted. It seriously was like a family reunion. Everybody truly cared about each other. I saw a lot of smiles! I’ve only been around a few companies in my lifetime that you could just feel that they care about each other like this. It was extremely impressive. I was blown away by the true camaraderie these employees had.

@@vibewithmike During the premiere, I asked in the chat about if the people on ship walked around much on the deck of the ship while it's out on the open water. Had to pause the premiere & restart, so I didn't see if my question was answered or not! Thanks!
@dbdouglas great question, the answer is yes, they are out there a lot on the deck. In the winter, they’re out there shoveling the deck and making sure there’s no ice buildup on the ship in the middle of the great lakes.
@@vibewithmike And the crew must verify hatch covers remain secure and there is always equipment maintenance and cleaning the decks of ore and coal.

As one of Mike's Boat Friends, I can't wait to learn more and more from these types of onboard videos. There is no question they help personalize the Great Lakes shipping industry. Yes the ships are awesome, but without the ASC folks like Mike and Jennifer the ships wouldn't move....they wouldn't haul, and they wouldn't have a reason to salute with their horns.

At the age of 86, I still recall my fondest memories of being on the lake freighter SS Huron. One of the 4 Wyandotte Chemicals ships. My father, Captain Clement F. Morreau asked me, as a teenager, if I would Ike to have a trip with him. It was the greatest thing I have ever enjoyed. The crew, the food, I covered every square inch of the ship, they taught me ow to steer the ship and I was able to steer from the Huron river it ship in lake Huron to he marker at Alpena Michigan and only varied 2 degrees form port to starboard. I even shoveled coal and many other adventures. I loved the bum boat in Toledo, the way the loaded the coal. The fresh air out in the lakes. I could go on and on. At one time or another my Dad was Captain of all four of their ships.

There isn’t one second while recording this video that I didn’t think about you and all of our Boat friends
I had a chance to tour a 1000 footer when it was in Sturgeon Bay. Thursday was prime rib day for the crew. It was the best prime rib I ever had! They told me to stop by any Thursday I was in the area. (I was doing some special maintenance work for them.)
The cooks on board of the ships are unbelievable. Jennifer, the cook in this video on the American century, she went to culinary school and she really knows how to cook and to make people happy with food. It’s unbelievably cool.

Thank you to ASC, Kevin & David, especially Mike who was our able guide on this Tour. What a THRILL! When you went out on deck, there was that BOOM! I was as surprised as when we hear the Salutes during the films from the Piers. It was exciting to me the entire time. I agree, that Galley is IMMACULATE! We can see that Jen enjoys her job and is pleased to keep the Crew eating well.

Hi Mike I was talking with my son who use to work on self unloadres
He said
"They keep coal wet to keep the dust down and it doesn't combust ( self ignite and cause a fire )
They run the train cars under a shower to soak the coal "
It has come a long way since the olden days
Back in the old and days when they burned coal to make steam
ships would have fires self ignite in their bunkers
The titanic left the dock with a bunker fire
On the original self unloadeers hatch 17 was the safety hatch if you fell in it would take that long to stop the track in the bottom before you reached the cargo elevator at the end
I asked him about hatch 17 being the luckey hatch ?
My son said
"It is instant you hit the button eveything stops !
if you fell in you might get your leg broke !
It's a long way down !"
Keeping coal wet water drains to the bottom they pump it out

The train that we saw leaving the Superior Midwest Energy Terminal dock was one of 6 or 7 that were needed to fill this massive ship. That is between 750 and 800 rail cars of coal...if my assumptions are right. I'd love to hear from our ASC Boat Friends on how close my estimate is.

Sitting on a even keel
I am not sure if they under water welded ?
used a canvas patch ?
Flex tape ?
Or what they use to do in the old days on the riveted hulls ?
they made a putty out of horse manure and straw
With a scoop on a long pole and ran it along the seams of the ship
Water pressure would suck the mixture into the cracks stopping the leak !
Once they transfer the cargo to the Manitoulin
They can open the double bottom and acess the damage from the inside ?
Since the crack is 15 feet and the crease over 40 feet long (bumped something in the past )
They can determine if it is good folded metal or frames giving way to rot !
The ship wont move untill marine experts look at it and the department of transport gives it the ok to travel to drydock if it is repairable or mabe towed to the ship grave yard ?

The crack could of worsened and there would be another dive site in lake superior !

The one thing that I kept noticing is that every person I encountered was gracious, friendly, and hard-working. Really good people on the ship. I had a wonderful conversation with the first mate, Chris, he’s a great person as well. I’m so happy I was able to make this video for you and all of our friends.
I can’t wait for my birthday trip to Duluth! I hope I can see a ship go under the bridge and I wonder if I will see you! 🛳️🚢

I definitely will have the opportunity to do this again with this and other ships with ASC. I will get the bridge and other details of the ship. I wanted to give a nice appetizer video so we can have fun moving forward.

Hello once again my, and many others, friend. I'm going to use the words double jealous right now because I am not sure of another word that says such as to how I, and I'm sure many others, are feeling of you. This is truly amazing because we get a behind the scenes look at what the workers of the American Century, and many other ships, do, and not only that but the icing on the cake of what different parts of the ships do, all for us. If I've not mentioned it before I love trains and airports by them, but what you've shown, ships and trains, reaches a whole other level, and it tells me that you listen to and know what your friends like; hand shake and thanks on that. Noow I tell you what would be awesome, to be a guest of Mike and be able to eat in the galley of what I'm sure is great prepared food. This country needs more videos of people like Mike and Jennifer working behind the scenes to know what they do, but it also gets them known, she seems very happy to have been made known like this, kudos again to you my friend. The view you had on the deck I'm sure was great. My wife and I went to Charleston, SC for our 25th wedding anniversary and toured the USS Yorktown CVS-10 AirCraft Carrier, and it was exciting, so I know that experience. To be short, BIG THANKS to you once again for another greta video and The ASC for allowing such. Thanks to all the men & women on these ships that work so that we have. Again thanks your appreciated. Now looking at the ship when on dock it’s huge (not good at fancy words) and mind boggling. Getting a view from onboard was so amazing and hard to put into words how immense this ship is. Like a kid in a candy store I was really taken back by it all and wanted more. The chef and menu choices are so interesting and making you realize it’s the temporary home away from home. So glad I subscribed two vids ago. This was fun and eye opening. Can’t thank you enough
