you dont stretch the ''beats per minute'', your 1,2,3,4 (or whatever time signature you are using) stays the same except when you're slowing it down or accelerating on purpose. What changes is the rhythms, a common example would be using triplets, they feel like they are stretching phrases since you are playing less notes but in reality it all fits inside that 1-2-3-4 phrasing and you should always come back to the one in your head. Practicing with a metronome and exploring different rhythm structures can help a lot
