Truly incredible. There was a lot of criticism of Satie at his time, that his work was lacking in skill, and overly simplistic. Perhaps they thought this because they couldn't play it with the depth and skill that the music required for it's mastery. I wonder if Satie's work was written in code, and if so, this is what it would sound like when deciphered by someone who could read it.

This is the most perfect touch I've ever heard of Satie in my life. The notes just seem to blossom out of thin air. The attention to tone, it could be a harp or a toy piano with metallic keys, a soft hammer and pipes. That shimmering on the reverbation, the delicate glisten... I've heard many amazing musicians make him sound clunky and odd but this is absolute perfection. Satie himself would say this is exactly as it was supposed to sound. Bra VO

Thirty years ago, my grandmother gave all the grandkids a video tape that was compiled from all the old Super 8 films from Christmastimes past...a time before many of us were born. Gymnopédie No. 1 was mixed as the soundtrack. Every time I hear this haunting melody, I envision all the aunts and uncles prancing across the screen showing off their new Christmas fashions or some other amusing gift. The cousins and I are now well past the ages they were back then. We've slowly climbed to the apex of the family tree, and we patiently await the same fate as those before us.
