I think the premise is better suited for a television show than a movie. You can spend more time developing the world and characters over 12 episodes than a two-hour movie.
Honestly I think they were drinking from the World of Darkness well with their lore, where vampires can feed off any blood at first but as they grow more powerful, they get less and less of what they need from animals and are forced to prey on humans. Eventually that isn't enough either and they're forced either to feed on their own kind (which is regarded as cannibalism) or enter a sleep like state called Torpor which leaves them vulnerable for decades while their power lowers to a point where they can feed normally again. that also has the side effect of having them come back out of touch with the politics of their kind, making them socially weak, not knowing about the commonplace working of the normal world which makes them mentally weak and being physically weaker than when they went into this state to boot. I'm thinking the change into bat monsters after feeding on vampire blood was born mostly out of the need to make it different enough so White Wolf Publishing couldn't claim infringement.
Best scene in this movie is when that subspecies bat creature breaks into Edward’s kitchen and Edward and his brother have to fight it. Ethan Hawke plays Edward’s fear so well. That scene scared the f _ _k out of me. 😱😱😱😱
I think I like this film a lot more than you guys did but totally understand your complaints. I wish they were given a bigger budget. Kinda amazing what they did with what they had to work with. Still holding out we get a sequel one day even if that's unlikely lol.
To bring up the animal discussion, it's pretty much said by Sam Neill towards the end, when he shows that Dalton's scientist colleague had finished a substitute, but it wouldn't stop human farming, because some people are just gonna keep wanting the 'real thing', and they as a company would provide it for premium prices. tl:dr money money money :p
I like to imagine it takes place in the Blade Universe. There's some similar behavior from the vampires. Notably their extreme reaction to sunlight and a "serum". They even have a similar look and priorities, like business oriented vampires, and even having a de-evolution in vampires like Blade 2. Not my favorite, but it's still fairly entertaining. Great review guys.
Love your reviews, I need to watch this one before I watch your video... Some ones I’ve watched recently that I think you guys would have a great time reviewing based on all of yours I’ve watched... Bone Tomahawk, Dark Star, A Simple Plan. Would love to hear your take. Great channel, great reviews, well done guys!
My head canon for why they didn't resort to animal blood would be that there were none left. Vampires are often a metaphor for unsheckled greed and abandonment to one's cravings (sexual of otherwise), so maybe they drank the animals like there was no tomorrow and then there were only people, which the vampires were also leading to extinction. But yeah, I agree, the movie makes a terrible job at clarifying some very important bits of its inner workings.
Thought that non human blood gradually turned the vamps into the bat creatures in the same way lack of human blood were turning the starving. His ears were starting to transform in the movie but just gradually
love you guys man, keep up the great work and stay healthy physically and mentally. One thing that always kinda got me is that they didnt go the blade route where vampires would keep people alive in a state of ketosis and farm their blood.
All your complaints are valid, but we like this film as a solid fun, C+/B flick that like you said at the time was the ONLY film grounding vampires back in horror, when that God Awful Twilight was all the rage.
I remember seeing this in theaters when it came out (remember theaters?). But yeah, I loved the first ten minutes of the film with the world building and the atmosphere. Everything after that fell flat unfortunately. Those first ten minutes were so great though.
As a premise is sure an interesting take on the vampire mythos and how a modern formal society full of vampires could end, the film itself benefits for having good actors that give convincing performances and also the direction and cinematography present a believable setting and world, however the movie maintain a narrow view and keep it small as well as a lacking of development and resolution of the whole idea which give a feeling of dissatisfaccion and eventually make the movie forgettable
I get similar feelings from this movie as I do from the first Underworld one, interesting premise and world building that gets squandered by the time the movies are done. I have Daybreakers in my dvd collection but I only watched it that one time and never felt the need to revisit it. The ending of this review however cracked me up!😂
Ethan Hawk did a great job as usual✨I loved the concept of this film for what it could have been and the look of the vampires who’ve transitioned into the mutants. But when they ventured off into the vampires turning back human the story went left! Great Review Guys ❤️
2:03 That mutual improv. Have not seen this movie, but the premise sounds great. Either way, I do believe the time is right for a proper "Vampire The Masquerade" HBO series or trilogy. A political/noir/horror thriller, in a fractured Europe and corrupted USA. It writes by itself.
Hey, that was on German TV a couple of days ago and I was thinking it would be perfect for you guys to review ;) I watch it when there's nothing else decent on TV, it's fine, but not great hehe. Willem Dafoe and Ethan Hawke are always great though! Maybe try "Byzantium", that is more "old-school" vampire than Daybreakers.
I personally like to believe that they abandoned live stock and didn't look after them so they died off quickly aslo vampire films make human blood the sweetest and most desired and it seems. They forgot about animals and only remembered when it was too late
I just figured it out!!!! He can live withhout drinking blood because he is a day walker!!! So he is trying to synthesize a cure based on his own blood.
So does that mean the girl at the beginning is human? She burned by the sun, but isn’t the sun burning you what turns you back into a human? Or do you burn and have to be put out to fully transform back? 🤯
This movie has some of the best visually fun bits I have seen in movie's The starving vamps security guards going feral turning and eating each other is well done ✅, the vampire changing to human in sunlight and quenching tank is fun But their could have been more action and more of the mutated vampire monster's. And the blood substitute never goes anywhere, would have been funny that was the unintentional cure
Oh good what a perfect movie for 2020 every captured human has been turned into a blood Capri sun pack, btw I think that girl writing in her diary was patient 0 for the virus; drinking any blood besides human I think still over time would mutate you into a subsider because human blood is the top genetic puzzle piece driver to stay “healthy”
Not a bad vampire movie, btw. We do have to adress the 'core' of the problem though: the Twilight franchise killed vampire flicks for (at least) 30 years. Again, the hammy trio Pattison the weak, Kristen the gal with the big chin and Wolf Boy Lautner made all vampires look like VEGANS.
Yeah that was a flop. They should have explained that animal blood tasted so repulsive that most of them would starve, or that it is a sin or that it ages a vampire or someeething.
Average uninspired film I'd say, check out "The Wolf of Snow Hollow" Best werewolf film since dog soldiers, the main actor reminds me a bit of Bruce Campbell!

Excellent point.
Seriously my favourite channel right now.

You guys deserve more. More views more subscribers. You guys are thoroughly entertaining. I'll never stop watching as long as you keep making content.
As I watched this review I slowly came to realize that my brain had fused this one with the movie stakeland in my memories.
Best scene in this movie is when that subspecies bat creature breaks into Edward’s kitchen and Edward and his brother have to fight it. Ethan Hawke plays Edward’s fear so well. That scene scared the f _ _k out of me. 😱😱😱😱

i realize it's pretty off topic but does anyone know of a good site to watch new tv shows online ?
@Kendrick Colin i would suggest Flixzone. You can find it on google :)
@Alessandro Wyatt Definitely, I've been watching on flixzone for since march myself :D
@Alessandro Wyatt thank you, signed up and it seems like they got a lot of movies there =) I really appreciate it!
@Kendrick Colin you are welcome :)
I'm glad that Gary and Iain are still reviewing movies!
Another Vampire film that came out during this time was Priest.
Constantine last week now this? Oh OTSR you’re too kind to us 👊🏼❤️
Best part, when all the vampires went crazy because they didn’t get enough blood in their coffee, and they tore the blood bag

I like your Rico's roughnecks shirt, have you ever read the book? Its amazing!
Enjoyable, but facist propoganda on a way the movie is the opposite of.
Keeping the great reviews and great analysis of movies consistent in these crazy times ! Keep it up lads good as always
This was the first film i watched with ethan hawke in it, i enjoyed it very much

Ian, was your introduction a reference to Spikes musical number in the Buffy musical episode?
Loved this movie, was pleasantly surprised by its take on vampires.
Totally forgot about this one.
You guys should do your magic on the 1956 sci fi classic "The Forbidden Planet" (and Logan's Run. hint.hint).
Love your reviews, I need to watch this one before I watch your video... Some ones I’ve watched recently that I think you guys would have a great time reviewing based on all of yours I’ve watched... You should do Escape From New York/L.A.
Thay should totally do a review on space truckers
My head canon for why they didn't resort to animal blood would be that there were none left.

Ian. Quoting James marsters spike in Once more with feeling
Ah Spike, now THERE'S a vampire for you. :)
Spike was f@@king harse :) he stole that show.

Gonna watch the review tonight. Have to work first. Love seeing Sam Neill as the bad guy.
You cant leave, she wont let you.....

Oh so pleased to see some love for Undead!!!...and hatred for Twilight lol Awesome review as always guys!!!

You guys need to the dead zone with Christopher walked
Great work
I still cannot believe that you guys so often pick movies which match my taste that well.
I personally like to believe that they abandoned live stock and didn't look after them so they died off quickly aslo vampire films make human blood the sweetest and most desired and it seems. They forgot about animals and only remembered when it was too late
My understanding is that they need the DNA in human blood to avoid becoming subsiders, which is why animal blood is not useful.
I enjoyed this film. Kind of surprised you guys didn't 😅
I just figured it out!!!! He can live withhout drinking blood because he is a day walker!!! So he is trying to synthesize a cure based on his own blood.

You guys should review The Matrix and maybe its sequels if you ever have the time.
John Carpenter's Vampires!
Can you review Gojira (1954) please?
No different than today's society this is exactly how companies are operating.
Wish I was as smooth as Sam Neil. I'd be knee deep in that what all red blooded males desire . . .
Chocolate, or CAKE!
I agree. Some of the visuals and ideas are very good, but overall this movie just falls flat.
I think the film is a lotta fun but a bit convulsed in parts but Sam Neil makes a great villian
Underrated film in my opinion!
Daybreakers X I am Legend. Crossover Fanfic writers, get on that please.
"We have the cure"
*Driving and flying out the front of the car window, set on fire and land in the water*
Best cure ever? lol
Great review you guys!

I am a bro dude kinda guy and love it haha

How could the vampires smoke when their respiratory system doesn't work

*TURN UP!*

Or maybe they drank all the animal blood or someeeething.
Ok in 2009 is at least very good in 2021. :)
Priest was actually a much better movie.
It is good, could have been great.
Ian looks stoned🤫😂
👍🎬🎥👊
Average uninspired film I'd say, check out "The Wolf of Snow Hollow" Best werewolf film since dog soldiers, the main actor reminds me a bit of Bruce Campbell!
Sounds like a mess of a movie.
I loved Susanne Sommers on three's company but there had to be some reason the whole cast hated her for over 30 years
Wtf does that have to do with anything?
@@NoBody-ft3cq absolutely nothing. I thought it would be hilarious to put something so unrelated to the video in the comments
