Let's repair this weird parasitic drain on this 2017 Honda CRV caused by the Electronic Parking Brake and the ABS module.
What's the NPR FIX?
REPROGRAMMING the ABS/VSA module!
I use the Honda Factory i-HDS software J2534 Reprogramming feature.

Wow! What a nightmare to solve the problem they created with their software bug! This fix should be free at any Honda dealer (I know, I'm a dreamer too).
You are right - it's a big computer on wheels.
Something happened when they changed their slogan from "we make it simple" to "the power of dreams"
@@drewv1785 Yep 🙂
Earth Dreams should be more aptly renamed - Pipe Dreams. Thanks Ivan!
xD
Wow, what an absolute nightmare. These modern cars are a royal pain in the rear. You're certainly right when you called it a computer on wheels. I have to say you definitely earned your money with this one. Thanks again for a couple of very nice interesting and informative videos.
You know Ivan! how many cars are driving around with parasitic drains and the owner has no clue because they are drivin daily not setting around for 3 to 4 days !! i bet thousands thanks for the great vids keep it up!!!
Looks like they gave you a behind the scene tour of their software! You got it done after the detour.
Next stop is IBM for you, me laddie and a go at quantum entanglement. Gold medal 🥇🏅🥇 for the best parasitic draw project so far on RUclips.
It was wonderful driving a car in the 60's and 70's yes they were primitive but easy to repair.
Amen
Yeah but emissions are less today then back then. Nevermind that one forest fire can negate that difference in a heartbeat and don't forget volcanic eruptions that spew toxic gasses into all levels of the atmosphere. They can literally change the weather for years and wipe out all emissions saved for years and years.
I wonder what a car would look like today if the engineers could ignore most of the supposed environmental related sensors and controls on an engine and just target efficiency.
@@consaka1 the sky is falling
@@consaka1 they maybe saving something but we won't be able to afford cars soon
Yeah, carburetors and vacuum controlled systems were known to always be reliable and really easy to fix. Oh, wait, no, they're not.
The world's constantly changing. And you have to keep up.
Great fix as ever. I can't believe how little oil that car holds, that is absolutely ridiculous.
Yeah I would never own one of those little engined turbo vehiclies you just know they are going to blow (just fun little pun) they almost always do as people drive them like race cars the whole reason the F1 only uses a set amount of drivetrains per season they don't last.
It's a Honda Motorcycle engine...
"How did people survive without all these systems and assistance?" Very damned easily, I can assure you! There is no need for any of them except ABS, which is a wonderful safety feature. Once again, cars should be direct/hard-wired and have as few options/complications as possible. Two computers maximum: one for the fuel injection and one for the ABS. Done. Back to good cars...
I personally don't even like ABS, especially in snowy and hilly terrain lol!
@@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics Ha! Have a switch where you can shut it off/have it reset each time the ignition is shut off - it's saved my bacon twice in wet weather/high speed. I understand about the snow.
Before brake boosters and endless interior insulation..... you could actually modulate brake pressure. .... And listen and feel for what the tires were doing. I don't want any insulation or plastic paneling inside.....and I don't want a brake booster diaphragm to fail....
It’s all a big money scheme
You can use that software indefinitely. You just won't get the updates after the script runs out fwiw. I use all the OE software so if you ever have a question on any of them just reach out. Toyota also had a update to fix a draw so TSB'S as you mentioned should always be a first step in the repair process.
Though I have actually come to enjoy doing and learning the diagnostic work, Thanks to You, I absolutely have no intentions of tackling this stuff, but still enjoy observing You do it. Just laid out the complete new wiring harness for My 69 Beetle project, it will be a piece of cake compared this stuff You do. And I took no pictures or notes when I removed the old one, about 5 years ago. Great! 👍👍🇺🇸
Having to pay for software updates for a manufacturing fault seems unreasonable seems to me it should of been a recall and free of charge.
Honda needs to reimburse you or the customer, what an Earth Dream PITA!
Depending on the age of the vehicle Iwouldn't expect them to do my 05 vehicle .I believe 10 years is a reasonable time span for recalls of this nature.
Recalls are for safety related issues. This wouldn’t come close qualifying. Also no one is perfect. Notice the scenario to cause the problem was very specific. No engineer is gonna plan for infinite scenarios lol.
If the vehicle is serviced at the dealer , updates are free of charge when service is carried out 🇬🇧
Soon the auto tech will need a degree in IT to do his/her job. Well done.
Yup that time is here haha
You will be surprised how many people don't want to diagnose these type of problems. It's either they don't pay enough, they don't know how to, or don't care how to solve the problem. If you noticed most diag youtubers don't work for dealers.
Not really. Every dealer has access to a dedicated tech assistance line for basket cases.
@@LSJUAN Honda tech line is not a viable source. They recommend but do not help upu diagnose.
@@LSJUAN All I get are "basket cases" haha
Nice! Reminds me of a W221 chassis Mercedes where the window stopped working. Window motor tested good and could be energized manually. Turns out the door control module needed a software update! As soon as the update applied, a relay in the module clicked, and the window could be operated again. Insanity, but keeps things interesting...
Yes, that is a good example. In fact I have a W221 and haven't checked my door module software version but I also haven't had that issue. The thing is, I'm willing to put up with some complexity because the end result is an S-class, not a CR-V. Some people want the most bare bones thing that will get them to point B, but that's not my goal.
What a saga for a parasitic draw. Seems like someone at Honda over programmed the ABS module and didn’t realize they were keeping the system active post engine shut down. Solving issues like these are why you are the King Ivan.
Silly modren handbrake 😢..its always easy have a sumple lever to pull and boom done no draw...great job ivan cheers
Dealing with a parasitic drain in my daughters 2016 CRV remotely. Dealer did very little diagnostic work and just wanted to replace parts Willy Nilly as well as have her spend and additional $800 on maintenance items. They replaced the battery claiming that it should be a Honda battery and suggested that the AC clutch relay should also be done which my daughter did herself. One month later the problem persists. I was amaze at your methodical problem solving skills and how you not only found the problem, but also fixed it. Just a job well done. Wish I could send my daughters car to you, but you probably don’t live near Salt Lake City.
Even though there are so many error codes that is much better than the lazy programmers in the industrial world that take many problems and just show them as a "General Fault" code. At least with many individual codes you can narrow your search and hopefully go somewhere productive. Great job as always Ivan especially with your knowledge and confidence when dealing with new software programs that many of us would shy away from trying. Take care.
Yes, writing good error codes can be harder than writing a working system.
My pet hate is using equipment that throws up a common alarm and you have to go chasing.
Great video Ivan. I would like to see more J2534 programming if the situation presents itself. Interesting to see how convoluted they’ve made re-flashing a MCU.
So what does j2534 mean ? Perhaps Ethan Hunt will tell us

Ivan this was surely interesting. Great job. Happy customer
Ivan thanks for sharing. First time I’ve seen honda HDS USED. Very informative thank you 👍
The ECU Reporgramming is the new tool Honda released to replace the J3524 rewrite this last year. Does the same thing but adds more functionality for newer cars that need updates for infotainment units instead of over OTA updates and other modules.
That was great fix, Ivan! At least you learned something in the process and use that tool for future references on another Honda! Great diagnosis! I'll remember to read the TSBs!!! Excellent video ! Complicated process but well worth it to figure out! I learned a lot in the video. Thank you! Great ending.
Great job Ivan. I think it's time for a storage upgraded for your laptop. A 1 TB which is 8x your current storage is less than $50 and I could walk you through upgrading without data loss. Thanks for keeping us informed

Control alt delete. Such a helpful video for all modern Honda vehicles. Seem a bit off a mess requiring all that memory.
I had a 2018 Accord. The windscreen wipers stopped working in a rain storm while on the freeway. If it wasn't for other motorists who put on their flashers and helped me find an exit, I could have crashed. I took it to the dealer who reprogramed a module. Although this fixed the problem, I promptly sold the car and bought an older vehicle.
Did you report it to NHTSA? That's recall worthy stuff.

Thank you for sharing! Don’t listen to the haters! You are one of the most intelligent guys on RUclips!! Great video!!!
I’m an IT Admin and we acquired a new contract with a Honda dealership. We built the network and Domain from ground up. Tech laptops are locked down big time (like any good networks). I had to figure how to allow these Honda programs, services, and processes through laptop, WiFi, 3 layers switches, and edge Firewall. It was different for Windows 7, 8, and 10. The 1st laptop I put on an “island” and allowed mostly all traffic. I got it to work. However, this was a temp fix for one laptop. I suggested this laptop would be the only laptop with these programs. That was shot down. Through trial, error, testing, repeat, and lots of coffee, I wrote a script for Windows 7. Win8 and 10, was the same way but I had a good foundation to tweak the scripts. Man, it was a project for sure.
Good as always.Thanks
Well I think you are a bloody genius well done😊
Hi Ivan, after this I will NEVER buy a Honda!! Many thanks from UK.
Great video! That is quite a sequence of events to create a parasitic draw. Props to the OG who figured that out and thankfully wrote, shared, and published a TSB! Because in my opinion, exempt cars with a manual transmission, but probably 95% of the cars with automatics driven every day never use there parking brake. Oh I was expecting more out of you on the 928 test drive, I wanted to see sideways and clouds of smoke!! lol. I kid I kid. That’s was a really good series, but I’m still hoping you have Audi 200 5 silly turbo content coming.
Audi 200 is going to be like 20 parts... I'm still working on it 2 months later 😆
@@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics 🤣🤣 I’ll be patiently waiting to see what you got yourself into on that one. But when you get a minute RUclips search “Audi 200 launch” (about a 50 second video) you will be wowed!
WOW mind blowing its amazing we rely on computer software for everything . Not a good idea to many opportunity's for issues
As a Honda technician, I was definitely found it entertaining seeing you having to figure out HDS I was the same way when I first started now it’s like muscle memory but from a dealership standpoint, there is an update on the brand new record. That is an absolute bitch. It includes multiple updates using the Hds not using the J253 for rewrite, but using the ECU reprogramming, which is a new way of doing things Honda ditched the j2534 rewrite for the newer cars only thing I use that for is the pgm-fi software update recall on the pilots, passports, ridgelines and odysseys. Also If you have a computer with a lot of storage hds works a lot faster
What is the name of the OEM interface for the HDS?
So pleased I decided to walk from Honda having owned one from 2005 to 2021 and covered nearly 350k. They have become too complex for their own good, and almost impossible to fix.
Same goes for every manufacturer haha
Quite the night owl, working past 9PM.
On our 17 CRV, we had shift lever break into pieces, luckily it was covered by Honda on a recall. Being a Texas car, we didn’t have an issue with oil dilution on the 1.5 liter turbo. Engine oil capacity for the 1.5 turbo 3.7 liters. I’d go no longer than 5,000 miles between oil changes with quality synthetic oil.
Cheap plastic haha
Thats prety average oil cappacy(at least for smaller engines) my 2002 ford focus with 1.6 zetec engine holds about 4.1L of oil
The positive here is you did not need to go to the dealer to update the software, plus you had some training and learnings with the Honda diagnostic/programming tool. Even at $45 plus your time, it would be cheaper than going to the dealer to program it. Great outcome for your customer, great outcome for you 👍.
Job well done thank you
Ivan, I kinda like to get a little dirt on my hands when I fix a car. Just saying. Thanks for Sharing!
When I first saw I thought it was a 2007 crv which is close to me. Still pretty interesting.
I'm with you, Ivan. The simpler the better! 👍
My car is old enough that I can still put in my own RADIO!
I kind of miss having a good tape deck in my car haha
Interesting fix I'm with you I'd think twice before buying a Honda
I write computer code including diagnostic software,
THIS is a classic example of what you get when programmers write diagnostic software rather than have the end user guide the process because the programmer and the end user come at diagnostic from a different point of view.
The programmer says, "I can give you ALL of this", and the end user wants to start with a very few options that fan out so you can drill down to the section you need.
I have to say this software represents the worst of diagnostic code...
You did well.. IMHO.
Way to Crack off them videos! I watch the complete Porsha series also 👊🏻
My first car was a 67 Mercury Comet. 6 cylinder and power nothing. Only a Alternator mounted to the engine. How easy things were back then.
My dad had one of these.Everytime there was a large hill to climb we all got out and walked as engine would struggle and possibly roll backwards.I was with him when we took that clunker to the junkyard
Some of those Ford sixes had 85 bhp mated to a 2 speed automatic. I remember flooring our Falcon to test 0-60 and I gave up at 60 seconds. No nostalgia here.
I feel your pain Ivan. Newer Honda's are a bit of a headache to work with. It's not enough to just clear codes and test drive for faults. Oh no, no, no. You have to re-calibrate a handful of systems. And Honda's are picky about how you do all this.
All I can do is bow to you...
Way too much money for garbage software. No thanks, Honda. Great video, PHAD!!
It's amazing how clunky and slow some of this manufacturer software can be. I can only imagine the people who develop it don't end up having to use it on a daily basis..
man I miss a 327 small block with a 4 speed and all you needed was a tool box and sae hand tools
Ugh, I hate iHDS. About the only time I ever have to use it is in registering the VIN when an SRS module is replaced in 21+ Civics and 22+ Accords.
I was getting worried you weren't going to reset the VSA! It won't always cause issues straight away; inevitably it will wait until it's back with the customer again, then you'll get Traction Control Disabled, Lane Departure Unavailable, Forward Collision Unavailable messages on the dash, and just about every trouble light on. Fun times! Extended battery disconnects can cause this as well. Toyota and Honda both have battery disconnect checklists to go through. I'm suuure all the parts stores know about it! ;)
Amazing work Ivan. I,m still trying to wrap my head around this one. You need to update the software to correct a manufacturing problem at your own cost. What exactly is wrong with that picture? Seems like the company or dealer owes you and the customer some money...
Well that's what the warranty is for, no? Granted this one left the factory on day 0 with "bad" software, but I wouldn't expect anything for free outside of the warranty unless it is a "safety" issue requiring an actual recall. This one is not.
I appreciate your comments regarding the complexity of modern vehicles and not wishing to own one but how are you goingbto achieve it. I have a 13 Yr old kia ceed that still runs very well with 150 k on the clock , but even that has some modules on it and it's just one up from the basic model. With manufactures putting even more gadgets on their cars in order to sell them and the EU coming up with even more emission control ideas , I don't know how long we can survive the technology😢😢
Like you mentioned, a car with more than three modules is not for me (except my 2015 tow pig but even that was the most basic I could buy). My world ends at Toyota's introduced 2006 or prior and GM's through 2005 at this point...except the 2010 P71 I just bought.
Great repair Ivan. I enjoyed the learning curve with the less-than-optimal iHDS UI. Also, Did I see you verify that the update repaired the draw, but forgot the order of shutting the car off, and then holding the epb switch? Or did I misremember haha. Also, on the iHDS, When you do an ALL DTC check, the ALL DTC CLEAR button won't illuminate for a bit afterwards. The DTC CLEAR button is useless and tedious, as you nearly found out before it froze. Lastly, at least these 1.5Ts won't run dry; they have a constant fill feature with those low friction rings causing fuel dilution.
Yup the oil pan is refilled with gasoline 😆
Thanks for the video, this is why I won't get a another Honda.
I can't imagine ever owning a newer Honda product after watching that pile of garbage you had to go through! And, Honda made you buy the software too!!
I have an 09 crv and I love mine. One owner gift I’m sure I’ve said before. But my lil rat terrier, my best friend, could not ride in my grand marquis she got sick. The Honda changed her life and I can take her anywhere which is my goal. I want my buddy to experience as much as possible of these United States because there is so much beauty to see. So yes I’m grateful and I baby the thing. But we drive a lot and I can’t say there’s much I don’t like. Maybe a bigger motor but it’s not a dealbreaker. Anyway sorry man. Too much words for a comment.
The ridiculousness of modern cars cannot be overstated...
I've got the 21 pilot and I don't use the computer oil change program 4K and its getting changed. Well you better stock up on old cars because one day they'll all be gone and you'll have to drive a 300GB PC on wheels too.
I agree with you, why can't cars be simple?
Well, cars are extremely low profit, so they add profitable things, then advertise them trying to one up other manufacturers make us think we need those things, then it becomes industry standard, then the average person won't consider a car without it, then my ass buzzes everytime I get close to the highway line and I die a little inside.
Another fine job.😅😅😅😅😅😅🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
My left foot pedal connected to a cable works perfectly and it never needs programming 👌
I prefer the right arm for fine control ;)
In Europe, we have a 2019 civic with the same engine. Service reminder it self ask for an oil change service in ca every 10k kilometers. And even for a CVT oil change in every 40k kilometers.
Wow Honda is making a lot of money on special CVT fluid haha
@@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics
It really is special, with gold flakes. 110-180€ for 4L. OEM code 0826999905HE, Honda HCF-2 Fluid. +Filter behind the fluid cooler assembly, but that is not in the service info.
It is a Win and almoust a win situ. Honda gets paid, and potetially less warranty claims about the CVT failures. And the customer too, if he/she wants to hold on the car a bit longer, pay a bit more few services right now or buy a new transmission later+labor.

Hi Ivan . Imagine having this system in all the military vehicles during ww11 General Paton’s Army would come to a stand still . Yes keep it simple.
You should put part 2 in the title - i had no idea this was part of a another video
Dealing with this software on a daily basis is suffering. I don't know how it stacks up to other OEMs, but its truly awful on a high end laptop even. Rumor was that there is a new software suite coming out, but that was a year ago. Plus with the new GM based EVs we will have to use GDS2 and their VCI. If it ain't warranty or flashing I grab my Launch tool. Much quicker.
Anyway to do this at home? Like a temp fix? Power cycle the module or recalibrate tpms? We don’t use the parking break. Feel silly asking that but I don’t have an option to get to a mechanic until the new year.
I enjoy fiddling around with computers & vehicles but both together is a disaster waiting to happen. That being said this is for you Ivan if you are using a small laptop with a low spec processor & the machine is upgradeable run at least 16 gb of RAM & try Linux Mint as your operating system it uses less space on your hard drive if you like Windows over Linux upgrade the on board storage to at least 1tb. Cheers mate see you on the next video.
Houston we have a problem!
Renault PC interface is crap too. The program runs through all systems one by one deleting and writing to the ECU. This causes the warnings to go crazy. There should be a way to copy the cars original programming, but there is no way of doing that, within CAN clip application. With PC interfaces, you have to sit for hours just trying to do the most basic of functions. Yes, it will do bidirectional communication, you can test features of the cars components... ETC just do not expect to have a clear logical diagnosis from the screens.
The C: icon is showing storage space USED not memory. When your drive fills up with data close to capacity, it turns red to alert user. The machine will then run very slowly, assuming you have a tradional old school mechanical spinning hard disk. Newer laptops use SSD drives which have no spinning disks or platters. It may not have been HDS program.
It's SSD. Does not slow down when space is low 😁

As a car enthusiast, I would NOT be willing to put up with these issues if the end result is a Honda CR-V. However, if the vehicle is something more interesting, now I am willing to take some time/effort/money to keep a complex vehicle on the road. All depends on what your goals are. Some people just want an A to B vehicle with no hassle. That's not me, though.
Lucky it's a 2017, imagine in a few years with the A.I. trend. I can't wait to ear my car tells me "I'm sorry, Dave. I'm afraid I can't do that.".
Have you seen how most people drive on the road? How they make day to day life decisions? Yeah. This is to make people safer. More computers. I love tech. I find it awesome, cool, and love to learn about it. However, most people just are not trustworthy.
Well Ivan i have a sultion for you that works get a Synology NAS and setup ISCS that will act as a second Local drive for the system so that you have a Network Drive that acts as a installed Drive you can use this on any Windows laptop as long as you at tome no cables just straight from a NAS all you need is Wifi on connected setup ISCS on Nas with the amount you want the disk to be go to Windows Open ISCs initiator then put in your NAS IP address make sure you set it up as a static on the network with DHCP reservation this will let you use it then go to format disk it will show up blank Quick format of new disk install APPS works well for this use case
I wonder if that software would work with a Autel Maxi sys Ultra VCI? I have sent them the question.
Hello Ivan. Once again my 2000 Grand Cher says Hi! looking better by the hour.
I agree with Jose Silveira and others. Cheers from Comox Valley to you all.😊
Honda should offer two days for $45 because it takes a lot of time to install and download the software. Most folks doing one day subscriptions are probably first timers, so the need to setup and install the software.
Why not throw every available update at the vehicle while the software is paid for?
Especially the PGM-FI, as this vintage CR-V had a few reflashes for poor warmup/heat, and fuel dilution of the oil
They've been developing pretty bad oil consumption as they age (reminiscent of the low tension rings on the Toyota 2AZ) 🙄
These downloadable programs work better on older laptops than new ? which windows system is on your laptop?
That's a little strange because our 2020 Civic Sport Sedan with the 2 liter engine takes 4.4 qts of engine oil it's not GDI or turbo charged I guess it's only important for these to last a long time 🤫
Car problems are harder to solve than a murder mystery.
I’ve thought many a times that it might be easier to strip out all the electronics and wiring. Then put in an aftermarket basic wiring harness. All I need to drive is lights and turn signals. 😊
That would be an interesting experiment actually. Can the drivetrain still work without all the gizmos?
Ivan, I just watched Part I and Part II of your videos on the Honda. NitPicking: you are inconsistent in describing the customer's shut down sequence between Part I and Part II. In Part I the daughter shut off the car, then pressed the parking brake button. In this video you describe the sequence as Press the parking brake button until it engages (2-3 seconds), then shut off the car.
At 23:26 it said start the car before doing the left-right-left-center thing with the steering wheel.
That would make it easier huh? 😆
90s to mid 2000s cars are where it's at if you are looking for the optimum combo of reliability, power and fuel economy. They were better than older vehicles but not hopelessly complex like later vehicles. Why did this happen? Regulations. Safety, emissions, fuel economy. There is no free lunch. Personally I happily moved beyond this golden era of cars because I am a car enthusiast and I like a challenge, if the reward is sufficient. I would not be satisfied with a 90s vehicle today.
I do still own a 99 Dodge Ram though....but it's a utility vehicle that I use for specific tasks.
Ivan, would you recommend buying a 8-12 year old car with timingbelt, port injection, no turbo and manual gear? And no extra cameras, modules etc. For cheaper maintainance.
Yes.
iHDS is truly awful scan tool software. After coming from using WiTech 2.0, it felt like going back in time 20 years. That software does have issues of its own, but it was infinitely easier to use and more reliable than Honda's Windows 98-era trash.
All the systems save lives and environment 🤔🍺
Moral of the story, don't buy a Honda!
Seriously though, more and more I'm seeing programming to fix vehicle problems. Even when a part is changed, one must "Update" or program the new part to the vehicle.
Don't forget to program the interface unit to the laptop and vehicle so it can be used on this vehicle!...... (HUH)?
Good one Ivan!
