Glad you were able to visit a Friday night Chinatown market. There is also a great asian food street in Chatswood on Thursdays - down from the train station. As to your comment about needing more sugar in the custard puffs from Emperors Garden bakery, you have to appreciate the cultural nuances of Cantonese food: compared to other south east asian foods (like Malaysian, Thai or Philipino), Cantonese cuisine doesn't like extreme flavours - not too spicy; not too salty; not too sweet. The custard puffs represent the fusion of European influence into a 20th Century Hong Kong food culture (in this case, choux pastry from France and custard) but mellowed for the cantonese palate and made available for the poorer everyday workers, who aspired to try 'European' foods but that which is cost effective, easily accessible and affordable. As global travel takes different people to vlog and document their travels and experiences, it always good to be reminded that we enter into a new culture with our own 'cultural lenses and expectations' and as much as personal taste comes into whether we like something, the original intention and adaptation to suit the locals is what makes food culture so vibrant and unique in different parts of the world. But thank you, Glen and Mado, for documenting your journey.

On saturdays, Flemington market is a good option. Filled with fresh food. Night markets there each month next 7/12 in the evening. There are also smaller markets around the city too - carriage works markets, the rocks markets, Paddington markets.

According to Paddy's Website, The origin of the name Paddy’s Markets is obscure, but it has been in use since at least the 1870s. It was most likely “borrowed” from England. The Irish area of Liverpool had a well known Paddy’s Market, and what went on in the empty block opposite the market sheds was in essence the same as our original Paddy’s.
