Also a kiwi here, I'll give you a noodles tip. :P Put the noodles in the boiling water, and wait 5 minutes for them to expand. Then pour the majority of the water out, so there is only a little bit of water at the bottom. (The reason to doing this, is because having a lot of water, will dilute the flavoring, and make the noodles taste bland) Now put the noodles in a bowl, add the flavoring and stir. The small amount of water, will absorb into the noodles, as will the flavor in the water, so the noodles will taste a lot yummier. Eat, and enjoy.
One of my biology professors told us that many of our taste buds are activated by salt. He said this is why a pinch of salt is added to many desserts and foods to make sure the taste buds are active. It would explain why all of the flavors of the food seem better with the addition of the salt.
@@KiwiDudeMRE I'd have heated the Lamb first, then left it unopened while cooking the noodles. Your noodles will go cold leaving them sitting like that, waiting for everything else. :-) Also, while I love two-minute noodles, I like them dry, like you're serving them too. Not fond of soupy noodles.
Lol...Never really thought about it, but I think the only time we'd use the word candy over here would be for 'candyfloss' or what you'd call 'cotton candy'.
Oh, and I use to make "cheese goop" when I was a young lad with the very same ramen noodles. Boil the instant noodles and mix it with the cheese (I used processed cheese slices). Yum!
i know that you're not a noodles fan but here's a pro tip: if you wanna make a dry noodles on soup based noodles (i see your comment that you prefer dried), put 3/4 of the soup powder in the bowl. put the noodles and 3-4 spoon of boiled water. mix well. hope you enjoy it better next time
There is typically a lot of food in 24 hour rations because they are issued on longer patrols or missions and the guys normally burn loads of calories and have to keep energy that is why you see a lot of sodium and protein in mres and or rations the sodium is to help absorb electrolytes such as potassium wich helps release energy and the protein helps nurse muscle fatigue and repairs minute amounts of tissue damage
one thing you can do if you have time to spare. melt the chocolate in the mess cup and then add the nuts and raisin while hot it turns into the most amazing fruit nut chocolate dessert
I noticed there's not Tabasco sauce in there...is that normal for NZ ration packs? The Moroccan Lamb looked pretty good. As a former soldier...I would be upset if I received Ramen noodles in my MRE.
Yep, normal to not have Tabasco in the packs. I love spicy food though, so I take full advantage of the Tabasco and pepper flakes that come in the U.S. MREs. The Moroccan lamb was indeed good, but just like any MRE style meal it needed a good season to bring it to life.
I find that interesting, the dreaded ramen. In America it is what nearly every college student has eaten on a regular basis due to the low cost. 20 cents a piece. I never thought I'd get tired of them but the very name makes me lose my appetite. I didn't even eat that much in college. I would be pissed as well. I've noticed the bit about adding salt to most MRE-like meals. I had some MRE spaghetti and I was hesitant to add salt because I wasn't doing anything active that day but yeah it helped bring out the flavors. After awhile I had to add the green tabasco. So yeah I agree.
The dreaded '2 minute noodle' is a staple of New Zealand Uni students too, so I'm glad it wasn't in the ORP as a 'meal'. Given the amount of food in the pack, they could have easily left it out, but may have been in there as 'calorie fodder' and also as a potential snack that could be eaten without cooking (if desperate!).
Man, I would have put some of that broth with the soup, and the onion in the broth. :O Those Kiwi rations are really something else, I have to order one lool.
+DTKT Defensive Concepts Most people here in the US cook the noodles in plain water, then sprinkle the soup base on the noodles or they add some water in the bowl with the noodles and mix the soup base packet in.
+DTKT Defensive Concepts I've never seen anyone do that. Everyone I've known has put the seasoning packet into the water and eaten it + the noodles as soup.
hello kiwi dude, just a hint on the mre that you like you might want to put a link up to the site where you can buy them.On the noodles I like to let them sit in the hot liquid for at least 20 min they get real taste that way
the only rason to put the spice in to the noodles wile they are cooking is if u are going to eat it as soup. if u will skip the water u put the spices in after u took the noodles out from the water:P now u have all spice is in the water in the pot. even if u make soup u add the spices after u are done boiling to get more flavor
Where is the flavour sachet for the noodles? how strange. I think without it I would be mixing the main meal into the noodles or store beef stock cubes in my pack.
arobatto over here in the uk some sweets were (and still are!) boiled sugar balls so thats how they're made. not sure how hard candy would be made... but im guessing the same way! its probably just a "where you are" name for things (eg in us trousers are called pants, whereas in the uk that refers to undies! lol)
Pretty sure those noodles are pro comparable to ramen noodles, you wouldn’t leave the water in with it because then it makes it taste all watery and then you put the seasoning after you put them in a bowl. :) however we all have our preferences, that’s just how I’ve always know myself and others to eat them. God bless :))
Wher can I purchase these mre’s as I would like to try one not so much the New Zealand ones ( although a taste of home sounds nice ) but say a Russian one thanks in advance
Kiwi Dude Nor am I. They are handy when outdoors though. When I worked as a correctional officer I learned just how popular they are in prisons; they're among the top selling items at the inmates commissary.
Not really so interesting. Midnight shift was watching inmates sleep until time to start waking them up for work. Unless you got tp do a random search; then you never new what you might find. Swing shift (between day shift and midnight shift) you fed them supper, handed out their mail and supervised their tv time. As long as they were peaceful it was boring. When they got nasty, it could go downhill in a heartbeat.
It seems like you are eating a lot of what should be snacks with your main courses. Some of what you are eating could be eaten as a snack between meals.
***** Absolutely. At the end of the day I guess it comes down to whatever the soldier feels like at the time. I personally would have the snacks between meals.to pace out the day and avoid feeling too bloated on the move.
WOOOW !!! Surprised to see that in NZ the people don't eat the beef soup ! Instead they heat the pouch with the entree in it ! Strange world down under !!! :-(
Jimmy Harris Lol.. I wouldn't consider what I did 'normal', but personally I don't fancy the noodles swimming in the broth. The ration came with a separate Beef soup too.
Lol.. yep. They were 'garden variety' instant noodles though, and I'd put in way more water than required in order to re-use it for heating the retort pouches. I'm not a huge fan of that type of noodle, so I may have skipped over the prep and tasting a little as a result.
I'm just about to upload the final video from this 24hr pack (dinner) and I'm stuffed to the brim. It's a LOT of food to try and get down in three meals. Happy I'm across the line.
Sooo..... to eat lunch you need to have pot with boiling water ? Yea ... not very smart. When you are in the field, in some ditch, where you will find such things ? I'm from Poland and our MRE is much more realistic.
+lostinspace013 The New Zealand soldiers are issued with portable stoves, but the noodles could be eaten dry and the soup could be mixed with cold water instead of hot. Of course the pouches with the main meals are also ready to consume cold if needed. No big dramas.
I am pretty sure that Noodles are suposed to be more like a soup XD ... who would leave the actual broth behind 0.o ... appart from you ?! XD Nice.
Also a kiwi here, I'll give you a noodles tip. :P
Put the noodles in the boiling water, and wait 5 minutes for them to expand.

+BluntAnim Sounds like good advice. I'm not a big noodle fan, but I'll give your method a shot ;-)
The noodles I usually eat would probably kill me it I tried to cook them that way. Already quite spicy as hell. Good proper Korean noodles.
Hello noodle sensei
You should put the soup broth on the noodles. That would have rehydrated the onion flakes perfectly. Great video!
When I make noodles I add a mixed up egg when the soup is almost done to thicken it, and then add Spam, or ham.
Dan Hayami Sounds like a good addition there, Dan.
One of my biology professors told us that many of our taste buds are activated by salt. He said this is why a pinch of salt is added to many desserts and foods to make sure the taste buds are active. It would explain why all of the flavors of the food seem better with the addition of the salt.
Dude just wasted the soup. Supposed to drink it with the noodles.
I'm not a big instant noodle fan, so would have always had them 'dry' like that. Plus I needed the soup/water to heat the entrees ;-)
Lollies, my new favorite word. Much better than hard candy.
Lol...Never really thought about it, but I think the only time we'd use the word candy over here would be for 'candyfloss' or what you'd call 'cotton candy'.
Noodles and stew and cookies and extras and...wowzer
Oh, and I use to make "cheese goop" when I was a young lad with the very same ramen noodles. Boil the instant noodles and mix it with the cheese (I used processed cheese slices). Yum!
I love your videos and am binge watching them like Netflix! I would love to know how and where you get your MRE's!
Wow ! That is an amazing looking lunch. I'm Moroccan btw.
i know that you're not a noodles fan but here's a pro tip: if you wanna make a dry noodles on soup based noodles (i see your comment that you prefer dried), put 3/4 of the soup powder in the bowl. put the noodles and 3-4 spoon of boiled water. mix well.

I think the noodle's seasoning should be poured into the noodle after the noodle cooked and served in the plate...
"Oh what the hell" I laughed so hard when you said that!
There is typically a lot of food in 24 hour rations because they are issued on longer patrols or missions and the guys normally burn loads of calories and have to keep energy that is why you see a lot of sodium and protein in mres and or rations the sodium is to help absorb electrolytes such as potassium wich helps release energy and the protein helps nurse muscle fatigue and repairs minute amounts of tissue damage
brenyn sanches Thanks Brenyn. Trying to eat one of these in 24hrs without some major exercise during the day is definitely a struggle in itself.
I looked at that manufacturer date of 2011 and thought OH GOD but then I looked at your upload date for this lol, ok, well its 2020 now.
one thing you can do if you have time to spare. melt the chocolate in the mess cup and then add the nuts and raisin while hot it turns into the most amazing fruit nut chocolate dessert
2:00- In russia we call it Rollton
This pasta as you only with hot spices
@6.05 that cookie is looking at me !!!
This is gonna rile up the safety sallies and "Christians". Well done!

And he noodles were definitely the least interesting part of the ORP :)
If they could only throw in a packet of couscous - that's how I like my Moroccan Lamb !

montmorencythedog That's the way I eat them too.

I think I would keep those noodles for late at night, not that long before bed.
whats the point of the noodles without the broth?
Where is the flavour sachet for the noodles? how strange. I think without it I would be mixing the main meal into the noodles or store beef stock cubes in my pack.
Does the NZ Army have a personal Cooker for each Soldier?
They're issued with disposable stoves, but many choose to carry reusable gas stoves. Cheers.
So help this yank out please. How do you get "boiled sweets" from what we call "hard candy" in the states? Keep up the great demos!
Hard candy is boiled sugar and flavour therefore boiled sweets
arobatto over here in the uk some sweets were (and still are!) boiled sugar balls so thats how they're made. not sure how hard candy would be made... but im guessing the same way! its probably just a "where you are" name for things (eg in us trousers are called pants, whereas in the uk that refers to undies! lol)
Very tasty recipe, I hope you've ever tried or try:
Tomatoes with onions and mayonnaise
Try delicious Russian recipe

If a cat eats tinned food instead of dry, then all the cats that eat tinned food watching right now are jealous of your entréé!
Wher can I purchase these mre’s as I would like to try one not so much the New Zealand ones ( although a taste of home sounds nice ) but say a Russian one thanks in advance
use the orange and mango sports drink with the drinking chocolate and it makes a jaffa drink :)
Where can I get a mre I live in the u.s.
When I saw this, I instantly thought: why not combine the noodles with the lamb?
TheMjollnir67 Not a bad idea. I'm not the biggest noodle fan, but certainly would have added to the meal.
+TheMjollnir67 thats what we did with these on a tramp. Noodles with lamb on top, weird combo but tasted amazing.
Kiwidude do you eat the food you put on the plate in the videos, or do you eat what your daughter doesn't?
Yes and yes :) Nothing gets wasted.
I want to order this food, looks tasty for lunch
Everything in it was thoroughly enjoyable!
Where did you buy it
How come you didn't eat the soup with the Ramen Noodles?
santamanone Truth be told, I'm not much of a Ramen Noodle fan.
Kiwi Dude Nor am I. They are handy when outdoors though. When I worked as a correctional officer I learned just how popular they are in prisons; they're among the top selling items at the inmates commissary.
santamanone Wow. That must have been a challenging/interesting job. Any shareable stories? :-)

Boiled sweets?
Really want to try the newzealand ration one day!

you made the noodles wrong
Do a face reveal like if you agree
Where did you get this
Engel This was from a New Zealand online auction site (TradeMe).
You were supposed to eat the noodles with the soup...
Lol.. yep. They were 'garden variety' instant noodles though, and I'd put in way more water than required in order to re-use it for heating the retort pouches. I'm not a huge fan of that type of noodle, so I may have skipped over the prep and tasting a little as a result.
What happened to the boss? AKA Crystal
I don't think she'd joined me in the reviews back then. I can't remember what her first ration video was though :-/
If you notice on the outside of the 'Entree' packaging you will see the word Kaweka - look here www.kawekafoods.co.nz
This company also has the steam cooking / sterilizing system down pat.
Quinn Bougen Thank you. I noticed the Kaweka, but didn't know its relevance. Looks like they've got some nice meals there.
They are on the shelf in supermarkets if your looking for them.
Quinn Bougen Cheers.
I think im hungry now xD

but good job!
Cheers Jake.
lol... listen to THEMgale13 you don't really live in the wild/country without eating noodles. me=local pikes peak colorado rockies
please do on an Indian one
I would love to. Indian is my favouriate cuisine.
you used way too much water and you need the water for flavour.
Na, you drain most of it off and then add the flavourings, tastes way better that way. and NEVER break the cake of noodles in half.
I love roman
Roman?
Olivia Donnarumma ramen. the noodles
I love loli

+Kiwi Dude a hot meal sounds like it'd be better for morale
WHAT BLASPHEMY, You broke the noodle cake in half WTF, no more long noodles to enjoy, TRAVESTY, Lucky you are all the way over the ditch....
