    The F117 getting shot down was a mixture of complacency, espionage and the SAM operator taking a risk. The US runway was being watched by informants who were taking note of what was taking off and when, on this particular night they noticed that the F117s had gone in without wild weasel cover. The US had been using the same approach route to the target which had been fine because the F117s were almost impossible to target and when accompanied by jets armed with anti radar missiles it was a fools errand to switch on the radars for more than 2 quick scans as they'd soon be on the receiving end of some retribution. The SAM operator knew the F117s were coming and tried to scan for them twice but got nothing, however having prior knowledge that they didn't have an escort he risked a third scan and managed to paint the F117 as its bomb bay doors opened and got a lock. While he did manage to shoot the F117 down it was ultimately pointless as the bomber had already delivered its payload onto a command centre

    • @VincentNajger1
      @VincentNajger1 5 месяцев назад

      "Pointless"? Are you serious? That was probably the one shootdown that has had the longest and widest ranging consequences in world history, besides Gary Powers getting shot down in 1960 over the USSR in his U2. The wreckage of that F117 ended up in the Chinese embassy and the tech was reverse engineered and is the basis of China's entire stealth program. It also wrecked the 'invincible' reputation of stealth and provided a massive boost to morale. "pointless" ......geez.

    • @DjDolHaus86
      @DjDolHaus86 5 месяцев назад +22

      @@VincentNajger1 it was shot down after releasing its payload, it completed its mission. It only ruined the invincible reputation amongst those who don't understand the realities of combat. The point remains that even though they knew when and where it was coming from they still couldn't get a lock until after it had done what it came to do. The tech might have been pawned off to China but all that meant was they were in possession of incomplete 20 year old technology that they'd have to spend another 5-10 years figuring out before applying to their own equipment. There's a reason why the US holds a monopoly on modern stealth aircraft, they got an unassailable head start and everyone else is still playing catchup.

    • @jswjr6001
      @jswjr6001 5 месяцев назад +9

      My understanding is that it was not complacency as much as it was political constraints that did not allow them to fly over certain airspace, thus restraining them into certain flight profiles

    According to my dad [who spent many decades in the middle east]; They pretty much all hate all of their neighbors, but its usually a tribal thing, not nationality (as the national borders do not represent the tribal lands AT ALL).
    But, they're usually happy to try to put that aside because they hate Israel and/or America much, much more.
    Isn't it nice here in the western world where I (in England) only 'hate' the French and the Scotts as a [now] friendly rivalry.

      Things have changed a lot in the Middle East in the past 10 years. Especially after the Abraham accords. In fact I believe it was Jordan and Saudi Arabia who shot down the majority of those missiles that Iran fired at Israel. Times are changing. Which is a reason Hamas launched their attack because they were afraid that Saudi Arabia was going to normalize relations with Israel which they're pretty close to doing already

      I recommend listening to episode 105 of 'The Red Line'. It is an excellent international security podcast, and that particular episode focuses on Iran; interviewing a number of subject matter experts. One of the most significant take-aways, is that the Iranian people by and large are far more progressive and cosmopolitan than their government would suggest, at least in urban regions. However, they are also generally patriotic. One of the analysts on that episode suggested that the revolution would likely have collapsed if not for their war with Iraq, given the regime's extensive unpopularity and the raft of crisis they were undergoing, and furthermore, that an outside force attacking it likely result in a similar outcome of propping up the struggling regime.

    Then there was Operation Orchard, where the Israelis struck a syrian reactor program.
    Once again, it drew widespread condemntation even though the Syrians were curiously quiet about it...
    Which says volumes about the merits of condemntation by so-called allies, let alone the usual Israel haters.

    My Therapist has a Flight License, and at least in the US, one of the tests for that is flying entirely by instruments. If you use the windows you fail. The instructor/proctor is the co-pilot, so they can take over if you flub. But you have to be able to fly blind to fly legally, at least in this jurisdiction.
    Also pretty sure your HUD let you know you were upsidedown and falling while you were lost in those clouds.

      Jordan helped to intercept some of the Iranian drones & cruise missiles in the recent attack on Israel… I believe Saudi did too. Not sure what you mean by “voice of the Middle East for Iran proxies” but Saudi was the main (external) force opposing Yemen’s Houthi rebels until 2021 or so. Iran proxies being Shia Muslims and SA essentially leading the Sunni Muslim world, theirs is a cool relationship at best, each jockeying for influence.

    @ Cap, I understand your views of flying in cloud. I served in the RAF between 1986 and 2013 and in the mid 90s I was part of a security detail flying on a VC10 cargo aircraft which had to be refueled in flight. We were in full cloud and peering out of the fuselage windows looking for the refueller when out of the gloom emerged a Tristar tanker on our starboard wingtip, also in full cloud. Needless to say all went well, but to see two large aircraft in formation at that range in cloud was somewhat concerning for those of us who didn't fly.

    The way I see it: if Iran even tests (or attempts) a nuclear device, Israel's gonna feel it has no choice but to strike Iranian enrichment and production facilities. Saudi Arabia also would not want to risk Iran getting any further than that.
    SCENARIO: A joint Israeli/Saudi strike with Saudi Arabia providing tanker support and F15C and F15E escorts/decoys, as well as AWACS while Israel strike facilities with F35s.

    In what sense could friendly/unfriendly commercial aviation be used as an early warning system by a defending country and its allies? I guess stealth missions would always happen at night and at altitudes very different from typical commercial aviation, but I guess it can't be entirely forgotten about in the planning of such missions?

    • @Wyomingchief
      @Wyomingchief 5 месяцев назад

      Well commercial aircraft don't carry the type of Radars to detect other aircraft. They have tcas systems or Tcan can't remember, which is a proximity alert. But no commercial aircraft can't be used as an early warning unless they were actually able to visualize the aircraft. And at night time that's not going to happen because stealth aircraft especially bombers fly way higher than commercial aircraft
