RUMINATIONS: So, where to start with this one, eh?
This is a major milestone episode -- the very first storyline conclusion. Is it any good? Eh, your mileage may vary. In the end, it's just a big fight, bringing together a lot of my secondary characters into the same room for the first time ever, and showing the first connections to a lot of the Power Rangers crap that permeates throughout the rest of the show. As written in the previous episode, the point of this one was to satisfy all the storyline fans while the Youngblood episode was to satisfy those simply looking for a review. As it happens, I feel that this is actually the stronger review.
Also, it was in writing the review for the comic that I actually got inspired to do History of Power Rangers (which sadly, as you may have noticed, has been taken down from youtube. Fortunately, you can still see all of them at my Blip page: blip.tv/at4w ) because to keep me inspired to work on the Power Rangers-themed fights that I was rewatching so many old episodes and noticing little things and overanalyzing the plot and probably thinking waaaay too hard about it.
It was also during this time that I met two people who would become part of "Team AT4W" (for lack of a better name) -- Will Wolfgram and Amethyst, respectively playing Snowflame/Jaeris the Gunslinger and Nimue. Having seen a lot of fans creating prop Green Ranger daggers, I decided to make one myself... and was having difficulties with it. During my search for assistance, I came across Amethyst's blog on prop construction and sent an e-mail for help. As it happened, she was a fan of TGWTG and the show and, rather conveniently, also lived in Minnesota. Taking a long drive up to meet her, I also met Will while he was showing off a prop staff from some game or anime that I'm not familiar with, and Amethyst helped finish the prop dagger used in the video (the model I was promoting in the video had a lot of work and paint that still needed to be done to it). In addition, I knew I needed a morpher for the video and thought I still had an old morpher hidden somewhere in an old toybox and spent the better part of a day searching for it... without success. A fan very kindly donated their old busted morpher to me, which I decided to try to repaint myself.
That was a mistake.
While I'm by no means an expert propmaker, my skills have increased significantly since those days and I was not experienced enough to properly paint the dang thing, instead just creating a runny mess. Fortunately, Amethyst and Will were able to salvage it and make it look presentable. Hell, the day the episode premiered I went over to Will's house and all three of us watched it together and read comments. Afterwards, we all went out to dinner and began putting together the plans for Lord Vyce (subsequently coming up with the name thanks to a name generator program).
The fight itself is the most choreographed I've ever done and with good reason. These days I have a pretty good idea of how I want these things to look, so I don't worry about getting the movements down EXACTLY, but back then I had never tried to have a battle with MYSELF before (aside from making a comic lunge at my face). As such, I knew it was important to storyboard the fight from every camera angle to maximize the effect and know how it would look. I think a few shots ended up being cut, but otherwise nothing major.
Black Lantern Spoony left to resume what he had done before Mechakara had recruited him -- reclaiming his show from the clone. The results of that can be found here: spoonyexperimen...
While filming this with my parents (who helpfully acted as stunt arms and shoulders for a lot of shots), there was a shot where I punched up at Mechakara and recoil my hand in pain from punching, well, metal. Yeeeaah, that was real. I overshot the punch and accidentally hit a wooden VHS cabinet and scraped some skin off my hand. Ow. But hey, it was otherwise fine and added to the realism of trying to punch something I shouldn't be (I never learn, do I?).
There was a lot to wrap up in this video, but I think I did an admirable job. If I were to do it all again, there are some technical stuff I would fix, maybe make it more clear why Linkara retreated back to the living room after having just fled from there, but overall I'm very proud of it. And if nothing else, this episode is what started getting me a lot of fans. I've had many tell me that they got into the show from this episode and then went back and watched more to see everything that lead up to this moment and stuck with me through the rest, so regardless of whether you like the storylines or not, they're here to stay and hopefully so are all of you.
I know Linkara's acting as Mechakara gets a lot of praise, and it absolutely deserves it, but I also want to take a moment to appreciate the writing; the idea of a robot apocalypse being countered by humans discovering magic is one of the coolest story concepts I've ever heard
Linkara's acting as Mechakara is so goddamn glorious. You deserve some acting roles Lewis.
Pollo has some of the best delivery in this.
"Pollo! You have to help me beat this alternate universe version of you!" "...What?"
The moment 90s Kid shows up will never cease to delight.
I love how Linkara says "Even though I have the real one" as if "The real one" isn't also an enchanted cosplay prop.
Binging on Atop the Fourth Wall Eps is fun.
I love how Pollo just comes in to help save the day. I'm not sure what about this appeals to me, but Pollo going about his day and then suddenly encounters two Linkaras in the middle of battle is funny to me.
Also: "maybe make it more clear why Linkara retreated back to the living room after having just fled from there." I think it was pretty clear. After Spoony punched you, you were dazed and didn't know where you were going, but maybe that's just me.
I love that responce from poyo. "I need your help to defeat a evil universe version of you.".................."huh?"
I totally forgot about Pollo taking shots at Garth Ennis. 10 years later and I would love to see that review happen
The battle was sooo freakin' cool! But I must be honest. The whole time I was like, "Wow Linkara has a really nice house. Just look at that fire place!"
Frank: "-the suspect has been arrested. Linkara has been missing for several days, with his car parked outside his house. Here at his house is Ethan Edwards."
Me: "Thank you, Frank. The comic-book reviewer and world savior, Linkara, Has been missing for several days. He was last seen coming back from his vacation. We conducted a search, but he could not of been found. If you see him or know his whereabouts, call the police as soon as possible. I'm Ethan Edwards, Channel 6 news. Back to you, Frank."
90's Kid and his Nirvana powers.
Personally I love your storylines. Of course I started watching for the reviews and I still love them every week but I always get excited after credits to see there's still time left and I'll get to see some more of you and/or will's acting and your amazingly crafted stories I honestly think your stories are better than many on the shows on tv. Keep up the amazing work and the amazing reviews/stories :)
And so this 3-part story ends as it began: with Pollo reviewing a comic
A personal favorite episode. Good work again Linkara. I'm always impressed by your level of writing, and sense of humor. The level of detail is just incredible. The videos are always clever and pretty Damm smart. Your opinions are always clear and that makes the video more enjoyable. Even your level of detail in video descriptions is amazing. I'm not huge into comics but your writing style has turned me into a huge fan. That and of course I'm a star trek fan so you got me hooked with the stars trek movie comic tieins.
So um, after watching this again I have what may seem like a weird question. It was originally "Why does Mechakara have his hands covered with gloves instead of Linkara skin?" But now it's "Did Mechakara keep Linkara's junk attached when he uses him as a skin puppet?" Told ya it was weird.
Hi! I know you posted this comment seven years ago, but I've decided to chip in with my thoughts. Considering that Mechakara was complaining about the robots in Ultimates 3 having a libido, my assumption is that no, he would not have kept Linkara's junk on the skin suit.
One of the many things that enticed me to watch Atop The Fourth Wall was the idea of your storylines, especially since the first one involved an evil robot doppelganger.
It did not disappoint. Especially the work on Mechakara when his fake skin was shot off, it looked really good.
Boy am I glad I didn't start drinking my Coke before you mentioned the Pink Ranger telling us to stop in the name of love.
@Daniel Oates It's "March of the Cybermen."
Linkara-AtopTheFourthWall Linkara, you kick ass,the special effects (for internet standards) looked awesome, the story is engaging,i was slightly jumping up and down for a moment while watching this because i was amped up,the fight scenes were cool and stupid, and Pollo, man i love that robot, just like i love your show and work
Hey Linkara, have you play the power rangers video game because if you do i suggest you should do a let's play
More than 2/3 of the video is plot and 1/3 of the video is the actual review.
This is still a review show, is it?
That's just how I like it!
At least personally.
Linkara-AtopTheFourthWall please do a top 15 list of best or worst power rangers monsters
You know, the green screen here is better than we see in low budget films with WAY more budget than AT4W. Seriously, the side-by-side of Linkara, Ninja Style Dancer and 90s Kid holds up.
So...wait. "Made a suit of your flesh"? Does that mean he hollowed out his world's Linkara and...? ...THAT'S MESSED UP!!
Ah, this brings back memories. It was this, Vyce and Black Lantern Spoony that inspired me to try my own storyline driven show. It didn't really pan out, as I got far to ambitious with it, to the point where the storyline overshadowed the content of the videos. I actually hope that I can tell that story some day with a Kickstarter or something, but right now, I am happy seeing your awesome storylines unfold, Lewis.
One last thing, It's kind of embarrassing to admit, but I did actually have ideas for an AT4W crossover movie or something, if my show had gotten big enough. Clearly it didn't, but I always liked the idea.
this is probably my favorite video of atopthefourthwall god damm this video was funny, amazing, and totally badass!!
12:51
Oh why don't the Rangers ever fight badass monsters like that?! I know it's a live action series, but think what they could do if they adapted it to a cartoon! I'd watch that!
Toei would beg to differ.
@@MegaAnimazing Yeah, well Toei isn't exactly the smartest.
I love these crossovers with spoony. Hope you guys still work together.
I'm just wondering where in the world is Spoony today... in another dimension maybe? hehe
KrimsonVagus He uploads on his personal channel, but his schedule is sporatic. He just uploaded a few review video's a week or so ago.
AngellusRavenix KrimsonVagus And he uploads reviews on his site in a different video player.
hmm, I haven't checked his site for a while now. think I'll go have a look-see
reuisu I'll have to find his site then. I was told the first parts of his FFXIII review was up on it.
gotta say as someone who grew up watching power rangers and had never seen this fight before my thoughts from the moment he was on the ground to morphing was something like "he's not oh my god he is this is the best thing ever". In short i loved it and it brought back a lot of childhood memories for me i don't think i stopped smiling till the video was over 10/10
That climactic battle was just the best #TeamLinkara
When I hear Nirvana's smells like teenage spirit, I always think of 90's kid
This was my first review that I've watch years ago, and it got me into your show.
Plus, I do love Power Rangers as well. It was one of my favorite shows of all time. My other favorite is Ben 10 (The original series, not the reboot.). Speaking of which, I did notice that there are a couple of Ben 10 comics (sort of...) Out there. You're welcome to take a look at it if you have the free time. Also, I found a comic series called Samurai Penguin a few years back. I read it only issue 1, 2, and 5. And I didn't like it. Put that on your list of comic books you've never heard of, and take a look at it, if you have the time.
I love the attention to detail in that a slash with a bladed weapon causes an explosion at the point of slashing. i always thought that was ridiculous and amazing at the same time when i watched power rangers.
So here's a question: How did Linkara read the comic when his arms were tied down either at his sides or behind his back?
Zelenal i guess the robot turned the pages for him, or he was just tied enough to move his arms a bit. thorughout, it kept looking like the comic might fall out of his lap.
Trevor Cutler or maybe he is like me me and has good toe mobility
"There's a simple explanation."
It’s magic, he doesn’t have to explain it.
24:36 The greatest moment in AT4W history.
"Where's your magic gun?"
Where'd he purchase that?
"There's the Blue Power Ranger, there's the Yellow Power Ranger, There's ... the Power Ranger who wears white ..."
24:35 quite possibly my favorite scene on at4w
Gotta say, your Bulk impression is pretty good.
I never understood why they changed the zord name from "Ninja Falcon Megazord" in the movie to "Ninja MegaFalconzord" in the show.
A little surprised you didn't highlight that the "Ninja Megazord" in Story #2 was actually a mis-colored Shogun Megazord with the Falconzord attached.
An excellent episode! I always look forward to the skits at the end! :D
This was an Awesome arc!
16:20- 16:30 this comic predicted Megaforce
When he says spend hours on TV Tropes, he means a lot of hours
20:25 Anyway I started blasting
So why exactly did robots revolt in Mechakara's universe? The way Mechakara describes it, he just used the revolt to kill Linkara. Who's the real mastermind of the AI war in his universe? And why didn't it happen in the main CW-verse? Please, give me an actual serious reason, not a joke answer
Ten years of mechakara and ten years of watching AT4W!
Linkara fighting Mechakara is like someone fighting their personal bully
and thus, the AT4W-verse was truly born
you know what I want to see?
I want to see fat grandma vs either a resurrected mechakara or a new linkara villain.
come on really come on who wants to see fat grandma finally put her cane across someone's head huh. okay think linkara is fighting, poyo's down and he can't contact anyone when suddenly you hear a voice call out to the villain and the camera pans over to fat grand ma who beats down the villain verbally and with her cane and when done helps linkara up and scolds him for having to fight a supervillian and grownds him from reviewing for 2 weeks.
15:04 Wow. That was a hella obscure reference, even for Red Dwarf.
Is it sadder that you made it or that I got it?
Proof of the Wasserman Effect. The fight was OK, until you grabbed the Power Morpher. As soon as the theme kicked in the fight turned badass.
You know, looking back on this years later, it doesn't make a whole lot of sense that Mechakara was able to use the gun.
Every bit of this episode was amazing.
11:00 i can't believe lord zed predicted RPM
"Now back to that delightful Chocolate Rain song! And then I shall go and listen to why we should leave Britney alone! AHAHAHAHAHAAA!!!"
Did Poyo say "The Boys"? Is that the same The Boys Amazon just made into a tv series?
That's the one! And it just got renewed for a second season.
15:56 "Hell, the Megazord doesn't even look right!"
That's because the artist mistakenly drew the Shogun Mega Falconzord instead of the Ninja Mega Falconzord.
I always thought it was funny how Bulk and Skull were the bullies who picked on the rangers. Since when did the fat and skinny kids ever bully the muscular athletic class mates? I think it's usually the other way around.
Well, I only found out about this show last year. So the uploading here has been great for me, certainly in regards to the storylines. Seeing them in proper order has been fun.
They had the old Zyuranger and one Dairanger suits from seasons 1 and 2 but they had to change the Zords and use the Kakuranger footage.
That is why season 3 of Power Rangers seems so confusing for some people.
Actually before I saw the DVD I thought the "sketch line" meant that Mechakara still remembered that MS3TK thing you did in high school ,though in hindsight it could also be that brief bit in Amazons Attack that got Pollo started in the first place. Just sayian'
It's been fourteen years since Mechakara was introduced? I feel like the villain at the end of "The Last Crusade" when he drank from the wrong goblet.
Even for the original 2010 upload date....
Isnt Myspace a Biiiiit dated.
25:32 Hey, this reference is topical again!
I don't you can classify Mechakara as a hippie? Unless he believes in free love AND the annihilation of all organic life
Doing a quick search through the comments, is no one going to bring up the fact that the Red Ranger's left shoulder is yellow at 16:28?
You guys are back!! I looked forward to watch you videos after school!
Myspace! I remember that!
I'm so old...
22:07 TO 22:27 IT'S MORPHIN TIMEEEEEEEE PTERODACTYLLLLLLLLLLLLL
They have to cover those empty warehouse districts somehow...
My theory to why the MMPR still have the same suits and helmets but different powers; the suit data that connects to the Morphing Grid comes from the Morpher, while what powers are available through the morph itself is donated by what coin they use. So using the original Power Coins give them access to the Dino/Power gear and the Thunder gear; while the Ninja Coins give them access to the Ninjeti form, ninja and shogun gear.
Mine is slightly different to yours when the pink ninja coin was stolen zordon said something about reenergising the rangers powers. Anyway my point is, is that the ninja coins act as a stabilising agent for the old coins preventing what happened in pris when Adam used his damaged morpher and Dino coin
Love your sketches, dude.
Linkara, may I ask where you got the robot hand for Mechakara?
Knowhere
Apparently it was a toy he had. He said so in another video.
Red Lantern Reviews i have one, got it from KB toys before they went bankrupt.
Red Lantern Reviews Why was the only part he couldn’t humanize? Aside from difference, of course
@@SharpDesign Well, now KB Toys is back.
This brings up a question. How much does Pollo get paid?
-10¢?
Gotta ask you as both a comic fan and a power rangers fan: why are the Rangers civilian identities a secret when most of the time the villains know EXACTLY who they are? Correct me if I’m wrong but doesn’t that completely defeat the purpose of a secret identity?
10:40 No one tell mechakara that thats what basically every single youtuber ever does now...
Well at least Linkara & Poyo share a negative opinion of The Boys!
Well, atleast they understand internet better than the clone saga xD
So is this how he was born
Wouldn't Margret recognize Mechakara isn't you?
I'd kind of like to hear the rest of Pollo's thoughts on Ennis.
I really love these skits.
Just saying... MySpace advertisement dates this so much... Lol
16:07 there's something wrong here but i don't know what it is.Oh, now i know it: THE SHOGUN MEGAZORD DOESN'T HAVE A PINK ZORD!!!LIKE JESUS CHRIST THE ONLY OTHER TIME THE WHITE ZORD WAS PINK WAS THE TOY
It makes a lot of sense that his first appearance was the Terminator video
So they can't have the black kid be the black ranger or the asian chick being the yellow ranger but the girl still has to be the pink ranger haha. Get Tommy in the pink outfit!
What about non organic, non mechanical life? Like Silicon based life? Or metallic beings with biological processes? Or energy life forms? Or gods?
To be fair I like Poyo doing reviews he should do some more.
16:00 That's not the ninja megazord, that's the shogun megazord! Also where's Rita and Rito? Did the writers of this comic even watch season 3?
13:43 Pink Ranger Has Some White Ranger Power On Her Helmet
Of course; too much pink energy is dangerous.
What's the song that play's when dance ninja shows up?
Thw six flags theme
We like 2 party by the vengaboys
Would you ever make a Linkara comic or tv series facing your many enemies?
When Linkara is talking to his robotic duplicate, the music during the scene is from Ghidorah, the Three-headed Monsters (1964). I don't know if that is the only source of the music, but that's where I know it best from.
What effects did you use to get you Mechakara to be in the same scenes
Combination of split screens, green screens, and the After Effects masking tool.
An oldie but goodie
"That was not my design."... Oh god, Will Graham from Mechakara's universe, everyone panic!
I just love how Andersonesque you are, Lewis.
This was one of the first episodes I watched back in 2013. I originally thought Pollo lived behind the couch.
Oh gods a myspace link...
This review might as well be entitled "Bad things happen to characters played by Lewis". It's still hilarious for something that essentially seems like a romp of self-deprecation.
Linkara- Classic Cartoon Network
Mechakara- Modern Cartoon Network
Cable- CN Real
Black Lantern Spoony- Cartoonito
Spoony- Boomerang
90's Kid- Checkered Past
Harvey Finevoice- [adult swim]
Ninja Style Dancer- Toonami
Pollo- H̶B̶O̶ Max
Dr. Insano- Warner Bros. Discovery
Hmm, I remember that first story from the Power Rangers comic, but I don't think the second one was included in the Power Rangers magazine here in the UK
How come Mechakara hates Linkara so much more than Cannon!Poyo? Would Poyo have turned on Linkara if he hadn't seen what he'd become?
And will we ever see an army of wizards fighting the robot apocalypse?
+Kai Creech I think he was treated worse in his universe than poyo is
+Kai Creech my head-cannon is that mechakara is from the alternate reality we saw in the nostalgia critic Christmas where linkara owns DC and marvel. Being busy running two companies would likely have left poyo to run At4W like was originally planned but with a lack of newer bad comics thanks to Linkara being in-charge of the primary source of comics, Poyo had to review nothing but Youngblood and other bad 90's comics, so obviously he joined the robot uprising first chance he got, probably the same day president joe blew up Canada.
+NekoVira which nostalgia critic Christmas episode is that
The first one.
It is a DAGGER
