I find it ironic how nowadays Shredder is usually the TMNT's archenemy, yet in the original comics they weren't afraid to kill him off in the first issue!
it's not but at the same time you kinda have to maintain a relative tone throughout a series which the 2003 version didn't. As soon as 4kids took full control of the show you immediately saw the drastic shift in tone and design the show went through and that is almost always a sure way of killing your show
7:11 re. the sword, it's all about length. 'Daito' refer to blades with a length of more than two feet, 'Shoto' refer to anything less. Anything more than two feet is called a nodachi. The classic ninja sword is usually supposed to be a shoto.

Am I the only girl who absolutely LOVED Venus as a kid? I did watch the show as an adult and was surprised to discover how much of a plot device she was. Wish they’d developed her more. Would have been nice to see some female turtles around
Since where now in 2022, we got Jennika in the new IDW comics who’s actually pretty cool in my opinion and, great news, this year we will be reintroduced to Venus in also the IDW comics and it will be the first time the character as made an appearance since The Next Mutation. How do you feel about that Grim?
I've honestly mixed feelings about this. I mean: her character was maybe the only remotely okay part of that show, but her character was still named after an art piece rather than a painter.
what's great about Ninja turtles as a franchise is how it reinvents itself overtime and how unique each incarnation is. My favorite though has to be the 2003 series though as I have nostalgia for it though if I am honestly the 2012 show is probably the best overall imo.
Its even better since Turtles Forever (love it or hate it) established that the TMNT have a multiverse and thus each iteration is its own universe! Also, the 2003 show is my favorite!
The awkwardness of splinter explaining there own orgins to the turtles is why most versions probably have the orgin explained when april meets the turtles.
Honestly, I was excited about the Out of the Shadows movie. It deserved a chance to build its world, but it threw too much on it, and collapsed under all the weight
I think part of artwork looking simple is because it tries to mimic style of Frank Miller with thick ink lines. In issue 2 (first appearance of April and Baxter Stockman), when they drop the Miller pastiche, art drastically improves. Also, it might be related to Eastman and Laird not expecting it to succeed - in future issues art has more detailed backgrounds, and actual ink wash shading (and the story is much better).

Man do I love the teenage mutant ninja turtles. While I'm not familiar with the comics I am familiar with the their tv series and movies. Some were good. Others were not. My personal favorite tmnt series is the early 2000's one. It was action packed, dark at times, and had a really good cast of characters.

+Kevin Corey Leonardo and the turtles were quite well done, they had distinct personalities but were very clsoe and loyal to each other (even if mikey annoyed raph one too many times), and honestly they're the incarnation I'd say feel the msot like an actual family rather than a team of randos. The only bad thing about Leo in the 2003 version was how he became a bit of a jerk after almost dying, but that was eventually fixed after being explained as PTSD over he and his brothers almost dying at the Shredder's hands. Also Splinter was really, really cool. He won an interdimensional tournament!
FREAKING HUGE TMNT FAN., grew up watching the 87 cartoon., the live-action movies., Ninja-Turtles The Next Mutation., the 03 cartoon., and the 2012 cartoon which is my favorite alongside the 87 cartoon and The Next Mutation.,,.
How about a Star wars crossover, not even once has there ever been a crossover with the 2 franchises despite being the most influential sci-fi franchises of the 20th century.
Brandon Lyon I hope they don't do a crossover in comics, a Star Wars Star Trek crossover would be so important that it'd have to be a movie, a really epic long movie
*squeels* lets be honest: most of us didnt know the tmnt started as comic characters.... or dark ones for that matter. my turtles will always be the 2003 version. it is prolly the closest to the original comics ive seen any turtles related properties had done. (while still having twists of its own. funny how people were up in arms about the turtles being aliens but no one batted an eye at the main shredder of the 2003 series being an alien.)
I'm among those that grew up with this series. the original movie is a personal favorite, and I backed the kickstarter for the board game last year, so my copy came with character cards and mini's based from this comic.
Bit of a missed oppurtinty for a joke using the Secret origins montage. Also, since you done Deadpool, you certainly changred your mind on latar characters. :V
I’d love for you to dive back in to the Mirage Series and check out the Leonardo Micro-Series. Probably the pinnacle of Eastman and Laird’s original run.
You know while watching the original ninja turtles movie, I constantly made a joke about how that one foot clan ninja slapped April, with "Slapping Foot Clan Joke", where whenever the foot clan shows up, I keep on saying that instead of fighting, they are slapping and I called the shredder the slapper and when the Turtles came back to their base destroyed I said they slapped everything in it and thst the sewers stenched of salmon
I had the honour of asking Kevin Eastman if this version of the franchise will get an ending his answer was that if Peter Laird is asked enough he'll finish it.
well i made this : daredevil see's some ninja (these are foot clan ninja) thinking there the hand so he follows . the turtles are getting ready to strike the foot clan then dare devil starts attacking the foot clan out of nowhere . Matt thinking wait these are the hand then he realize he aren't alone the turtles are there thinking who is he? the turtles thinking that he is a foot clan member just attack him after going blows to each other they get the mess settled down and told each others there stories and realized there stories are connected . (i can't think anymore story to tell and i'm not that good with story telling but maybe there's a possible alliance of the hand and the foot clan and some other stuff)
Being an avid fan of the 2003 turtles series, I just realized the first episode of the series has the same opening of the first ninja turtles comic (fighting purple dragon gang members accusing them of wearing costumes)
What if that Renaissance painter's book was a collectionof Dr Seuss books? Samiam, Onefishtwofish, Wocketinmypocket, and Hoponpop! These are the names of the deadly Ninja Turtles!!
"I think it's time we finally had a crossover with Star Trek and the TMNT." Because it turned out so well when they met the Power Rangers! By the way, did you know there's a Justice League vs. Power Rangers comic out?
TheHeroOfTomorrow Wow... so like Marvel and DC had crossovers... and then we have the Marvel and Super Sentai connection and then Power Rangers and now this...
I have a strange story to tell about how I came across the first issue of the original Mirage comic. At GameStop, they were offering a deal that if you pre-ordered the TMNT movie game based off the 2007 CGI movie (don't question my decision to buy the game, I was 9), you would get the first issue of the Mirage comic. At this point, the only Ninja Turtles continuities I was familiar with were the 2003 series and the live action movies, so I was used to the idea of a more serious take on the material (at least more so with the 2003 series). Imagine my 9 year-old self seeing the familiar scene of the Turtles fighting the Purple Dragons scene, only now the Turtles *killed* the gang members. Not to mention, Shredder dies in this issue. The most iconic villain of the franchise is killed off in the first issue. Sure, clones came around, but still. Reading that issue was an experience, one of the fondest memories I have with the Turtles.
Personally, I'd have made the title card a parody of the comic's cover. Linkara with the swords, 90's kid with the nunchaku, Linksano with the bo staff and Harvey with the sais, since all of them are played by Lewis. Hopefully an idea for the next time we might get a Ninja Turtles review.
14:30 Now we know why Leo is a fan of the Animated Star Trek series in the Nickelodeon version. I think one of the things I like about this version is the Shredder - he has a descent motivation and looks normal, which I also prefer from his later versions where I feel they try to Darth Vader him too much. It was also something I liked about the original cartoon.
Okay, seriously, the guys with Patreon should join forces and get Linkara to review the TMNT crossovers with Batman. And I mean the IDW crossovers. There is another series of TMNT/Batman series and that one crosses the 2012 Turtles with DCAU Batman. That one can get a review later. But the first series must come first. Either that or The Last Ronin.
Great job as always, gotta love some TMNT action, I've wondered if there has been studies done on title naming. TMNT, MMPR, aGoT, a lot four word titles.
Curiously, my first exposure to TMNT was the original cartoon (probably in syndication) and a bubblegum package parody that proudly proclaimed "Heroes that are half-wits!" Also, the Japanese sword is an annoying maze of blades that all kinda look like each other and that are all sorta the same length. There's katana, okatana which are katana but kinda bigger, zanbato that are really big katana with really long handles to match, tachi which look like big katana and are proportioned as such and not like zanbato so they're different, otachi and nodachi which look like...big katana, and a few semi-mythical weapons like Sasaki Kojiro's drying pole sword, which...looks like a big katana, because it is a big katana. That's not even counting the swords some sword makers put in Shinto shrines, which were colossal and not even really meant as weapons, just as showcases of the smith's skills...
Turtles to me is like Power Rangers is for you Linkara. II watched both series religiously as a kid but Turtles is the series i ended up sticking with. Though i have no ill will toward Power Rangers and enjoy the nostalgia of it. The main reason I think I stayed with Turtles is because the Turtles tend to explore, and be, darker and more mature themes then the Power Rangers. The 87 cartoon was fun as a kid, but teenage me greatly appreciated the darker and more comic accurate 03 series and how it just felt less childish. Not saying Power Rangers can't be mature, just that they rarely attempt to do so. Something that I think is due largely to the two series vastly different origins.
I remember reading this at a library when i was a kid and i still think it is pretty much the best TMNT comic out there. I really hope someone would make this darker style Turtles into a cartoon or something, after all aren't ninjas supposed to be assassins anyways?
I will say that naming their company "Mirage Studios" due to the fact that they didn't have an actual studio is pretty clever on their part.
Marc Quill I LOVE IT!!!!
Especially since their comics were about ninjas!
i agreed
I remember buying the ninja turtles book when they first came out. They were amazing!
The 2003 series was my jam in my childhood. Just the right blend of sci-fi, fantasy, humour, drama and good writing overall.

I just love how the big main villain in the TV show is actually a nobody that dies in the first issues of the comics.
He is the reason they trained to become ninjas, not really a nobody
He does sort of come back later on, but I think it's just a clone of him.
yeah it's pretty ironic. Its probably cause he was the msot visually appealing of the villains at the time, aside from the aliens
hell, krang was loosely based on a benvolent alien race who helped out the turtles.
In the new comics he lasted until issue 50.

Interestingly enough, the closest series to the comic's origin story is the 2003 one
The 2003 TV series is the first Ninja Turtles cartoon I ever watched.
The 2012 origin is the best altered one.
The original movie almost had the origin word for word
Only cartoon that had Splinter as the pet rat and not Hamato Yoshi himself.
That series was my Ninja Turtles dbh

+Kevin Corey Leonardo and the turtles were quite well done, they had distinct personalities but were very clsoe and loyal to each other (even if mikey annoyed raph one too many times), and honestly they're the incarnation I'd say feel the msot like an actual family rather than a team of randos. The only bad thing about Leo in the 2003 version was how he became a bit of a jerk after almost dying, but that was eventually fixed after being explained as PTSD over he and his brothers almost dying at the Shredder's hands.
Also Splinter was really, really cool. He won an interdimensional tournament!
I gotta say, your Splinter voice (when you're reading, not making fun) is really spot-on!
FREAKING HUGE TMNT FAN., grew up watching the 87 cartoon., the live-action movies., Ninja-Turtles The Next Mutation., the 03 cartoon., and the 2012 cartoon which is my favorite alongside the 87 cartoon and The Next Mutation.,,.
did you read any comics though
Who needs a TMNT/Star Trek crossover when they've traveled across space and time with THE DOCTOR/PROFESSOR?
Kacper Przysiężny What do you mean?
Professor Honeycutt aka the Fugitoid, is voiced by David Tennant, the Tenth Doctor
How about a Star wars crossover, not even once has there ever been a crossover with the 2 franchises despite being the most influential sci-fi franchises of the 20th century.
We already have that in the action figure line where the Turtles dress up as Star Trek characters.
Brandon Lyon I hope they don't do a crossover in comics, a Star Wars Star Trek crossover would be so important that it'd have to be a movie, a really epic long movie
14:21 Okay are we NOT going to address how cute the turtles look here? I mean come on guys! That’s the cutest thing I’ve ever seen!!!
Adorable indeed.
I think TMNT’s hiding place is a very good hiding place because what kind of weirdo would ever go in the sewer it stink
1:55 "Hi, Venus!" :D
Mmmm that Phelous clip. So good.
For those who don't know, The Foot is a parody of The Hand from Marvel.
*squeels*
lets be honest: most of us didnt know the tmnt started as comic characters.... or dark ones for that matter.
my turtles will always be the 2003 version. it is prolly the closest to the original comics ive seen any turtles related properties had done. (while still having twists of its own. funny how people were up in arms about the turtles being aliens but no one batted an eye at the main shredder of the 2003 series being an alien.)
RT Wait until you see the real shredder of the show.
supersmashbro596 Fuck yeah the 2003 series was the shit and Shredder was soo fucking badass in that show.
You mean the show's version of Tengu Shredder, right?
2012 is better. Adherence to the comics doesn't necessarily make it bad
supersmashbro596 I honestly didn't care shredder was an alien. He was just badass.
YES! Ninja Style Dancer is back!! Rejoice!
10:25 the build up has been YEARS in the making!
I’d love for you to dive back in to the Mirage Series and check out the Leonardo Micro-Series. Probably the pinnacle of Eastman and Laird’s original run.
My turtles will always be 2003
For me its the 2007 movie. 2003 is great tho
Omg. Sticks leave splinters. Splinter is a parody of stick. I literally just got that. Damn.
been waiting for this for a long time
James Orville Yeah, I can't think of an ep I've been waiting for this much.
Turtles should team up with Daredevil
The Ninja Turtles and Daredevil are in the Marvel Universe apparently, who'd know? Turtles/Star Trek crossover? Daredevil crossover now!
exactly
well i made this : daredevil see's some ninja (these are foot clan ninja) thinking there the hand so he follows . the turtles are getting ready to strike the foot clan then dare devil starts attacking the foot clan out of nowhere .
I love your Rowlet on the shelf, it is so cute. And I love your nickname for it - Doctor Hoot ^__^
What if that Renaissance painter's book was a collectionof Dr Seuss books? Samiam, Onefishtwofish, Wocketinmypocket, and Hoponpop! These are the names of the deadly Ninja Turtles!!
Samiam leads! Onefishtwofish does machines!
I would love if TMNT ever crossed over with dare devil
TheAllSeeingEye
What HAVEN’T they done that yet?
@@daelen.cclark No Crossover with Bimbos in time....or Predator
Ninja Turtle! *tosses action figure at Linkara*
they technically did, in action figures of the turtles dressed like characters in star trek.
(kind of cool.)
It's about damn time Linkara. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comics are all amazing. When are you going to cover the multidimensional talking cow head?
Except for the Image comics run. From what I've seen that was terrible.
I hope no one asked him to do IDW Issue #44 too much story and would ruin the pay off (assuming the internet hasn't already?)
"Should he deal with the corpse before or after dinner?"
There is an easy comprimise for that...
Hi.
TheHeroOfTomorrow I am pumped for the MMPR/JLA crossover event
@@TokuBoyStudios and there is also a injustice vs he man and the masters of the universe
Actually getting a new crossover between them now. Looks awesome though! :D
Ah yes, worm clone Shredder and Shark Shredder, those were weird
This comic is one of the most brilliant parodies of all time
I guess the automatic door explains why they aren't constantly flooded with sewage and rainwater.
You're Splinter impression is scarily good.
I knew you couldn't stay away from TMNT comic books. 😉Linkara on RUclips ! Yes!👍
If you haven't read the first run of these comics, they're EXCELLENT. Highly recommended.
Woo!
Ninja Turtles. I'm so happy, now.
14:26 they did, did you never know about the TMNT Star Trek figures?
14:30 Now we know why Leo is a fan of the Animated Star Trek series in the Nickelodeon version.
I think one of the things I like about this version is the Shredder - he has a descent motivation and looks normal, which I also prefer from his later versions where I feel they try to Darth Vader him too much. It was also something I liked about the original cartoon.
Aw man.I’ve been missing ninja style dancer.it’s always a great time when he shows up!
Actually I'm pretty sure the loan was paid in full due to how first copies sold out at 3,000 COPIES he made 3,000 more copies THEN THOSE SOLD OUT!
Also the turtles didn't kill some they killed all the purple dragons
Kitty Boy Neona
That’s impressive.
Linkara, you never disappoint.
Ah those where the days. I remember having an early trade of the first issues. Wish I still had it now. Good times!
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles! Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles! Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles! Reviewed by guy named... LIN-KARA!
He's the world most complainy comic reader
Great job as always, gotta love some TMNT action, I've wondered if there has been studies done on title naming. TMNT, MMPR, aGoT, a lot four word titles.
This is why I love stealth parodies, they tend to be as popular, if not more popular, than what they're parodying.
Curiously, my first exposure to TMNT was the original cartoon (probably in syndication) and a bubblegum package parody that proudly proclaimed "Heroes that are half-wits!"
Also, the Japanese sword is an annoying maze of blades that all kinda look like each other and that are all sorta the same length.
The Ninja Turtles versus inbred cannibals? That would be a Hell of a movie!
7:08. okay if you made another best moments, this moment should be on this list.
Came here because this is the only place I can find any trace of this song (5:26-5:37) on the internet.
Well at least you get a good review along with it.
Love the over dramatic aspects of this comic. It's very chuckle worthy.
“We strike hard and fade away… into the night.” We hit something or someone with so much force it causes us to dissolve from the pages.
7:17 in answer to that question- no, if it's that large it's a no-dachi.
I really hope someone would make this darker style Turtles into a cartoon or something, after all aren't ninjas supposed to be assassins anyways?
ikr but it will take awhile since tmnt is still seen as "kid friendly" and owned by viacom
