Before anyone else comments about this movie “not being out yet”, I want to make it abundantly clear that Despicable Me 4 HAS come out in Australia, and that I have, in fact, watched it in full. It’s very common for movies to be released in Australian theatres before American ones; that’s just one of the perks of being an Aussie reviewer.

@@josephgover5072 It doesn’t look likely. I’m always keen for an Illumination movie to beat a Disney movie, but Inside Out 2 has become something of a cultural phenomenon among certain demographics, and I doubt DM4 can do the same.

Can they just use the same animation as the Mario movie and the migration movie those Animations weren’t bad but in the Despicable Me four animation, this looks like the old animation from sing 2 and secret life of pets 2 what were they thinking of changing the animation

my expectations for this movie were "It cant be as bad as 3" and it was even worse
I had several dreams about going to see this movie and every time it had ended up being horrible and/or bait and switch.

Something I did wish the film did was have the three daughters have more agency in the movie.
Like they could’ve had some stuff about Margo struggling to fit into her new school and maybe her and Poppy forming a friendship or something
Maybe have something about Anges struggling with being in Edith’s shadow and trying to become her own person. Maybe have something about her standing up to the karate instructor and beating him in a fight or something
Absolutely! I completely expected Margo and Poppy to become friends, and maybe for Poppy to become some sort of negative influence on Margo. At the very least they should have gotten Edith and Agnes to use their newly-learned karate skills in the final battle, and that’s still at the VERY least. It’s such a shame; the girls really seemed to only be in the movie for no other reason other than recognizability.

Tbh I’m just happy with these movies being family comedy’s set in a universe with super villains, they don’t have to learn lessons or have arks, Bugs Bunny or Donald Duck don’t have arks either and they work fine, little set pieces that take us from joke to joke with characters that each have distinct personalities and reactions to things, for a movie like this, that’s all you really need.
I’m all for a return to straight Bugs Bunny-style cartoon antics; I guess I’m just disappointed that it was attempted in a Despicable Me movie. The original was a touching story of redemption, with great physical comedy as a bonus. Like how it would have, in theory, been great for Pixar to make a James Bond-style spy thriller, but what made it so unpopular was the fact that it was a sequel to Cars. I totally understand where you’re coming from, though. I reckon a Looney Tunes revival would be phenomenal.😉
Honestly I kind of feel like a big problem is the lack of dark humor? Like it doesn’t need to be extreme but the first film would have these dark jokes (Edith accidentally getting locked in the torture coffin) that gave it this edge that is severely lacking in the other films.

the movie isnt god awful, i found it funny at certain parts and it will keep you entertained, my main complaint about the movie is that the plot is really bland, this movie just doesnt add anything important to the franchise.
I may have exposed myself to spoilers but hey, I don’t think I was planning on seeing the film in theaters anyway.
I did see the end credits. Honestly kinda happy seeing all of the past adversaries there.
i saw the movie and i feel like the story was a bit strange i liked it overall but i feel like there was something missing like everything was good but i felt like it was like a puzzle all the pieces are there expect like 1 or 2
Really enjoyed your review here. I've seen it as well. Left the theatre thinking "Yeah. Entertaining sequel." but I did want to feel more impacted by DM4 to want to see it at the movies again. This fourth film feeling pretty inconsequential from my point of view is one thing stopping me from liking it more if that makes sense.
I grew up watching the first two Despicable Me movies. I thought they were both excellent movies. Minions was mediocre, but achieved what it set out to do. I found DM3 to be nearly unwatchable, and as much as I hate that I'm saying this, I felt that Rise of Gru was, for the most part, a return to form.
For the most part, I agree with your criticisms of the movie. I wasn't a fan of how a lot of the side plots went nowhere, with the exception of maybe Lucy as a hairdresser. A lot of the new characters just felt very.... generic, much like DM3 and the Minions movies. (although I will admit.... I had a lot of fun with Will Ferrell and Stephen Colbert's respective characters)
What I will give DM4, however, is that it was a lot of fun. It never got boring, contrary to Despicable Me 3, which I've seen twice or thrice ever.. every time I've seen 3, it's been very very difficult to sit through. I truly felt that Trey Parker was the only enjoyable part of DM3. DM4 was by no stretch a GOOD movie, but it's one that I enjoyed watching.
To their credit, the Minions were, in my opinion, the most tolerable they've been since DM2. Having them in far smaller doses probably helps, and the Mega Minions weren't as milked as I expected them to be. This is probably just my sense of humour speaking, but I laughed the hardest at the gambling Minion that I have at anything Minions related in.... quite a while (honourable mention: when a Minion was stuck in the vending machine, and two others were taking turns slapping him on the arse)
Then there's the end cameos.... that alone bumps DM4 up a spot or two in my ranking. It was absolutely nothing but fan service, but goddamn I'm here for it. I nearly screamed seeing Vector, El Macho and Balthazar back. Really glad they found a way to include Dr. Nefario again also.. he's always been a bit of fun. Here's hoping he'll have a bigger role if DM5 ever comes to fruition (but I also think the DM4 ending is a good note for the franchise to go out on)
One question though... where in the movie was Fred, Gru's neighbour? I saw a glimpse of his house 10-15 minutes into the movie... but someone else was standing in the front yard
I’m really glad you enjoyed watching the movie! One thing I will admit is that it certainly never dragged. Many of the action scenes were surprisingly entertaining. And I definitely agree that the Minions were far more tolerable.
Fred can be seen in the final shot of the Gru family singing on the front lawn. He’s up at the back behind the fence.

Despicable Me 4 for me has the same issues as Despicable Me 3. The villain plotline is in the beginning and the ending. In the middle, we're just getting so many subplots for every group of characters that have nothing to do with the main plot of the movie. At least in Despicable Me 3, i enjoyed Gru & Dru dynamic and it is related to the villain when they go to steal the diamond from him. In this one, they're all there just to deliver laughs and nothing really mattered.
And why did Gru need to hide from Cockroach guy when he got a whole army of Minions and amazing weapons that defeated 3 previous villains who's far stronger than Maxime. This movie feels like they just put 4 episodes of a TV show in the middle between the movie that is the Maxime plotline
Overall, easily the weakest of the main Despicable Me movie
Saw it with the kids yesterday. I already greatly dislike Illumination but this movie makes DE3 and those Sing movies look like friggin masterpieces. Also the ending scene, although entertaining, my adult working mind couldn’t get over why there was a unisex prison. 😅

I think it's just that it's popular to hate on Despicable Me because the minions just ended up being cringe meme material, when in reality, the movies are decent overall and aren't as bad as people say. Internet crap like this is overrated lol.

Everything about the film being about as lackluster as Despicable Me 3 is true. But what is seriously glaring is how underutilized the Gorls/Gru's Daughters were especially Agnes. And this is one of the things that seriously makes me want a spin-off film for the three of them. But sadly due to the actual announcement of a Minions 3(yes this is actually happening. Look it up). It once again makes me feel like Illumination is afraid to move the plot forward with anyone who's not Gru or the Minions. But the spin off film idea I had thought of. Was one where it's a prequel film showing how the Girls became orphans and lost their parents, and how after that they end up getting manipulated and adopted by this villain guy and get tricked into looking for parts for this invention of his that ends up ultimately helping him conquer the world. And I imagine the plot being a little similar to the Powerpuff Girls movie in that manner. But honestly I just want to see that at this point since the girls are REALLY shafted and underutilized in the follow-up films and this would help for them as it would show depth to their characters and give them alot more screen time with giving the three of them their own solo film, but they ESPECIALLY deserve it. And when you do get time, you could tell me if you agree on or what you think of this idea to. ^^
I think that would be SO much better! Surely there are only so many times they can tell new stories about the Minions' origins... a story about the Gorls would be acres of uncharted territory, and by seeing how disappointed everyone was that they were completely sidelined in DM4, it seems that there would be heaps of interest. Your idea would work perfectly as a spinoff -- I can practically see the trailer already!

Dang - I knew the trailers gave away most of everything…I appreciate your honestly but as much as I still want to see it I’m disappointed that they didn’t let any of the storylines bake a bit in the movie.

@@K2SonicFan No worries. Basically the villain kidnaps Gru Jr and turns him into a cockroach-baby hybrid. However, he quickly defeats the villain using his new cockroach powers, and the family stands in the rubble and has a little laugh.
Kind of a weird ending when you write it down.

The final battle is quite disappointing, especially considering the potential a fight with an eccentric, flamboyant genius who’s obsessed with cockroaches presents… they just run up a building and he falls, getting finished off by the Mega Minions and finally being thrown in prison.
I really wanted to like this movie, but as expected i was sitting in a theatre trying to like it, usually i wouldn't have to do that

Story was mid, I literally closed my eyes in this movie because how boring and monotone it is, the stuff with Gru and their family is not interesting while the Minion stuff as usual is hilarious. Maybe they need to strike the balance between interesting plot, set pieces and in general more hilarious and not monotone jokes.
Hear me out, the only thing i liked about this movie was the music and megaminions, and i hate the minions -
Just got out of the theater and ngl, this movie felt rushed and a cheap way to reminisce the first film.

@@sleep170Cause the first one and second one even had good stories to tell. That’s why they worked so much as movies and is very evident by how much people praised both of those movies. And they had the Minions as side characters that were funny that didn’t take so much screen time which is also why the first two worked so well. The first two are an 9/10 while the other movies after that are a 6/10 or below
And? Do kids not deserve a great movie with a great story? The reason why most of the movies from Disney, Pixar, DreamWorks, Sony, Ghibli and so on worked are that they are for everyone and have a great story. This movie is only for cash and only for a smaller audience. The best movies are that are for the whole family. Also "You're dead if you only aim for kids. Adults are only kids grown up, anyway."

i didn’t rlly like it cuz i miss when it was gru and the minions, why is gru a family man all of a sudden? The wife was annoying to me and it’s the 4th movie and they’re still doing the agnes is cute thing. Also the villain wasn’t really that good definitely not on the level of victor or anyone else. It’s all around too cheesy and wholesome for me.
You can’t just say a movie is bad when it hasn’t even released so the movie is great and is much better than the others don’t decide that this movie is bad until it releases
It has been released in Australia, where I live. It has been out for a week. I have seen it. I can assure you that I found it to be much worse than the others.

@@notyashsingh2272 If you are insinuating that I didn’t like this movie because it didn’t contain fighting or blood, I’ll gladly reassure you that this is completely untrue. I actually hate watching violent scenes in movies as a general rule, and I agree that such a scene in Despicable Me 4 would have been completely inappropriate. Now, are there RUclipsrs out there who complain about certain movies being bloodless and/or PG? Of course. But I’m not one of them. One of the primary reasons that I appreciate the existence of Illumination is that they can always be trusted to put out clean, family-friendly content. Now, by all means, continue not caring about us, but I wanted to clear that up. Also, if you happened to like the movie, I couldn’t be happier for you! My opinion is just that; my opinion.
