  • "Go Big or Go Home!" Suzanne Golden says about her amazing art jewelry. But Suzanne's work isn't just large in scale. It's richly colored and well designed. Not to mention, expertly executed. In this interview, Suzanne tells us how she became the artist she has become, teaching herself one beading technique after another, year after year after year.
    Many of the techniques, she found in books. "I'm a technique junkie," she says. Suzanne had so many beadwork books, in fact, that she eventually shipped 700 of them to her friend Samantha Norgard, a professor at the Savannah College of Art and Design in Savannah, GA while keeping the rest for herself. (A list of some of her favorite books is below). It makes Suzanne happy to know that art students at Savannah College will benefit from these books for generations to come, long after she has retired.
    But Suzanne won't be retiring anytime soon. At 81, she's too busy designing new pieces, right in the heart of Manhattan. Everything she does is experimental - the bolder, the better. Her favorite beads are little tubes of plastic made by Artkal. Artkal beads come in myriad colors - allowing Suzanne to express her ideas in glorious technicolor.
    This is the first of 2-3 interviews I will be doing with Suzanne. The second will be posted here in a few weeks. We will also be hosting a live Q & A session here on RUclips - in the near future. Stay tuned.
    When she's not beading, Suzanne spends time at the Dover Street Market, a 7-story fashion emporium owned by Rei Kawakubo, the legendary designer of Comme des Garcons. At "The Rose Cafe," a small bakery inside the Market, Suzanne meets friends and other fashion-forward people, who compare notes on the latest fashion design trends. Suzanne also likes to visit the only Comme des Garcons boutique in North America - at 520 W. 22nd Street in New York. '
    In her Instagram feed, Suzanne shares images of herself dressed for each day in imaginative outfits designed by Rei Kawakubo or her colleage, Junya Watanabe. Some the garments she models are new while others, she's had for years.
    A celebrated NYC style icon, Suzanne once appeared in a photo shoot for the New York Times with legendary style icon Iris Apfel (1921-2024). Iris Apfel had a strong reaction to one of the bracelets Suzanne was wearing. So strong, it rendered Iris nonverbal. Suzanne tells this amusing story in our interview.
    Suzanne has been photographed several times by Bill Cunningham (1929-2016), the famous fashion photographer who roamed the streets of Manhattan on his bicycle, looking for stylishly-dressed people. For 40 years, Cunningham worked for the New York Times, documenting what people from all backgrounds were wearing in his columns "On The Street" and "Evening Hours." A RUclips search turns up quite a few videos about his life and work, including a documentary published in 2010.
    In 2013, Suzanne authored a fantastic book that I highly recommend if you don't already have it:
    "Suzanne Golden Presents: Interviews with 36 Artists Who Innovate with Beads."

    I don’t bead , but I found this interview Wonderful ! I work in another medium. I do have one suggestion for Valerie. Please leave the pictures up longer or set up a third window to keep the pictures up as you’re talking. I had to keep stopping the video and rewind it so that I could see the pictures again, I really enjoy your interview format and letting the artist talk beyond their work and share their life experience

      Hi @janmontarsi._blendangles, thank you for your kind words! Suzanne is amazing - and so is her work! I really appreciate your suggestion to leave the photos up while we're talking - and I will see if I can learn how to do that. I already know that I can leavae the images up longer - that's easy. I just worry about blocking the artist's face for too long. But let me see what I can do. I'll be editing two more artist interviews soon and they'll give me ample chance for improvement!

    What a terrific interview- thank you very much! In addition to hearing about the Suzanne’s individual pieces, I very much enjoyed the portraits of her done by other artists.

      Hi Becca, I totally agree! WOW is the right word for Suzanne's work and her life! She's busy as ever, creating new designs and curating herself in her style icon role. Like you, I love her work - and her commitment to expressing herself! She and I will be working on our second interview next week - but it will be a while after that before it goes live. We'll be doing a live Q & A too - probably in late July or early August. So please stop by again soon - and meanwhile, Happy 4th of July!

    Thank you so much for this. Huge fan of both of you! I do have that magazine Perlen Poesie, and my problem with making the necklace wasn't the complexity but that I don't have ANY of those beads. I do enjoy making substitutions, but the colours of those beads contribute to half of that necklace's look. I was thinking how I never watch any talk shows or interviews, that is until Valerie started her channel. Thank you both for posting this - what a pleasure for all your fans.

    • @valeriehector
      @valeriehector  21 день назад

      Hi Angelina! Thank you for all your kind words. Sounds like I was mistaken to think of that necklace as complex - when the real challenge was getting the right beads. I agree that they are a necessity if you want to capture the look of Suzanne's necklace. I'm honored that you aren't a huge interview watcher - but that you're making an exception for my channel. I have may more artist interviews coming up. So I hope you'll stay tuned! Meanwhile, happy beading - and thanks for stopping by.

And I have been beading for 17 years! It’s so embarrassing! I guess I just know artists who have been in B&B and BW over the years.
