The 320D was a great car and very economical when driven accordingly. However the 330D is on another level and is way nicer to drive. Sits so smooth on the motorway with a lovely engine sound and the torque it chucks out is immense. Economy when driven frugally isn’t too far from the 320D 🙌🏻

I have a vw up and was looking at the GTI 1 litre turbo model though after seeing these BMW and Mercedes diesels I'm now looking at that

I had a E60 535d Lci M Sport with intercooler upgrade, both hybrid turbos and remapped to 400bhp but unfortunately had to sell after 2 years due to ULEZ. Anyway replaced with E90 Alpina D3 MT with 240bhp and then E90 D3 BiTurbo. Both of which are based on a 2ltre engine and can honestly say I don't miss the 3litre twin turbo on day to day basis. The 2ltre cars give me more than enough power for a daily car most of which spent on motorway yet the mpg return and saving on fuel is almost double.
@330dfam Yes, agree the smoothness of the 6 cylinder is way better than the 4 pot which is partially why I decided to then move up to E90 Alpina D3BT (coming from a twin turbo set up of a 535d also played a part as who doesn't like more turbos lol) but the fuel return has amazed me. I think a winner for BMW would have been be a BiTurbo 2.0 ltr diesel. They did sell the 125d/ 325d which had this setup but they aren't common. I will always be a in line 6 fan, before the diesels I had dailed E46 330Ci, 330Ci Clubsport and E46 M3 and prefer E30 325i with 2.7 engines over E30 M3 with a 4 Pot but for a daily I'm swaying to 320d.
After owning a 20d now and a 30d before just get a 30d mpg isn't much different and it's a much better fit for a bmw the 20d is "decent" the 30d is fantastic
All the 2ltr bmw engines seem to suffer with timing chain tensioner issues even the petrols, apart from the new b series engines. Id avoid them like the plague. Check out bmw doctor's last couple of vids and what he thinks on them 😆
I'll start off by saying I never considered anything else beyond the 30d when I looked at F30s. After moving from a 6-pot N52 in my 330i (and then some Hondas before that), I realised my choice is foremost about the lump up front and how it's engineered and how it sounds and of course how it responds. I always saw myself heading for a smooth six and was prepared to pay the price for this. I traded miles for smiles. Now full respect to the 20d - great engine if you look after it. My specialist mate suggests getting the chain done on those by about 80-90 K as a precaution. But at the end of the day (unless your car is just a means to an end) it's the difference between perfectly good vs bloody fantastic.
Hi maté completely agree I have a massive love for the bmw six petrol or diesels it’s what it’s all about for me I think the average person who isn’t necessarily into cars or the brand a 20d is great however the 3L is that bit closer to the ultimate driving machine ..timing chain issues are enough to put me off in all honesty I know it can happen with ours ☹️
