- This video is for entertainment purposes only, I am not a mechanic by any means and you should undertake these tasks at your own risk. In this video, I will be showing you how to do a full service on an F series BMW. It's really not that hard, I show you how to change the oil, oil filter, fuel filter, air filter and cabin air filter. Doing this yourself can save you a lot of money, I also go through costings in the video. Please like, subscribe and leave a comment. I hope you enjoy the video. Follow me on Instagram! @jimdcars

I’ve serviced my F32 over the last few years and wish I had come across a video like this back then. It’s been a learning curve…. The coolant was always the biggest pain.
I don't own a BMW. Or even a car but I'm still watching this. 😂
That makes us even 🤣🤣. I'm thinking of going for one in 2025
Great video. I was just about to pay £240 for a service. I just bought everything I need for £88, so this will save me a decent amount! Thanks
Thanks for putting this video together. Picking up my first BMW F30 320D in 3 days time, getting very excited now!
Très bon véhicule 👍.
This is a brilliant and detailed video bud.. Will save me a s**t load of money so thank you very much
Amazing video for anyone interested in saving a quick buck on basic service :) none apart from the fuel filter seem difficult so when I will get my hands on an F30 I'll definitely try
Well done, looks an easy car to do this basic service on, I have always serviced my own stuff, cars and bikes, I have 2 metal skids to drive the car up on, saves having to jack it up,
I hardly ever replace the crush washers on the sump plugs, great to do your own work as you know it's done right,
also handy you can reset the service light, I agree 10,000 miles is even long to leave the oil in there, I usually change oil every 5000 miles, cheapest and best thing you can do to protect the engine.
I like your style, leave the mistakes and all in, I recommend a funnel though or one of those clear plastic filler jugs with a long spout and markings on the side, I am very careful about adding the correct amount of oil😄
Yes I do a full service like this at BMW's recommended intervals and then an oil and filter change in-between, so the oil is getting changed every 7k miles or so. I do 15/16k a year so it gets a full service once a year anyway
Just did mine yesterday - piece of cake ! thanks for all the help ;-)
Thank you. It is really helpful for my female brain to understand this for my next BMW service ☺️
Brilliant, well articulated and presented video. Thanks very much for your help mate. Appreciate you.
Colin
Great video mate! Really helpful knowing about the jacking point in the centre and having a low profile jack!
Keep the videos coming on the F31!
Thanks for this video, really helpful. Do you do your own brake disc/pad replacements too? Mine are coming up and I dont mind getting dirty if it saves money. Cheers
Another great informative video mate. I remember watching your previous service video and that was a belter too. Great work mate.
Thanks! This is pretty much the same video just with better audio
Great, helpful vid. Definitely interested in the gearbox service.
Great, I'll watch this later, looking to buy one soon.
Thanks for this video mate! exactly what I needed.even better coming from a local mandem.
Did you ever get around to doing the gearbox oil video ? any idea what the service length is ?
12 000km in most cases
Try Parts in motion, as cheap as Autodoc but the stuff arrives in about 2 days rather than 2 weeks.
You are the best bruv
Great detail! Made servicing my F30 feel so much less daunting!
Do you have any videos on other F30/31 servicing such as brake fluid etc?
I don’t I’m afraid, but the brake fluid is the same as any car really it’s dead easy
Great video great explanations. Really useful when I come to do the service.
Thanks chap.
Great video, I also have a f31 nice to know how easy it is to do! Would be handy to know about battery replacement on these 🧐
Fairly sure it’s in the boot on the right but not checked myself
Nice video, well explained thanks
@jimdcars, Can you provide a video of glow plug replacement step by step? You have great videos!
Good video mate. In South Africa, BMW recommends that the N47 engine should change oil after 18 months if it has not traveled more than 7000 miles? Wont the oil be old by then or is it fine if the car has not traveled much?
I’m no expert but I would do it every year at least
Great video. I have the same car and wasn't aware it even had a dipstick, where is it?
Take the oil cap off and filter out first before draining the oil. Just in case of problems then you still have oil in your car, if you drain the oil then can't change the filter or get the oil cap off or it cracks !!!!!! 25nm is the Toque for the oil plug bolt and oil filter cap, renew the copper washer. Check the belts hoses, drive shaft rubber gators and disc and pad brake wea, while you're underneath it. It'll only take 10 mins then instead of an oil service you've done a full service !
Great indepth video mate 👌
THANK YOU VERY GOOD VIDEO BRILLIANT.
Good video Jim, I have the same engine. One question, does all old oil comes out if the car isn't parallel with the ground?
@@srdanrados5322 it’s impossible to get 100% of the old oil out as there may be some at the edges of the sump (if it’s not level) and there will be oil in all the oil channels, oil pump etc. just service regularly and it’s fine.
Hi Jim, awesome video again! Quick question, did you notice any real difference between 5w30 and 5w40? like driving experience, fuel consumption etc.?
Haven’t noticed any difference at all tbh so I’d just go for whichever is cheapest
@@jimdcars Many thanks Jim
Nice video does it matter much that the car is not level?
11:30 tell me that's not a fart XD
@@AnthonyMalesys lmaoooo didn’t even notice 🤣
@@jimdcars lool I'm looking to buy a 320D or 330D so your videos are pretty usefull !
Thanks for the big laugh btw hahaha
Good video mate
great video, gives us the confidence to do it ourselves. Have you heard of timing chain issues on your car now that it got 100k miles? any apparent chain noise? thanks.
I’ve read lots on the forums and fb groups I’m in about them. It’s not making any noise and perfectly fine atm. I’ve seen a fair few people say to get it done but also seen a few people say they’ve got to 230k+ miles on the original chain
@@jimdcars good to know thanks. same thing here, I have an N47D20C engine. not sure if it is far better that the N47D20A early version in terms of timing chain and guides life to it.
Once you’ve opened the sump plug do you have to lower the car for all the oil to drain off
Thanks for your help❤
Drain plug socket??
Do you change the fuel filter every year or every 2 years?
Do something with this Check Engine Light on dash pls
Which socket size for the oil filter and sump plug?
Is that dipstick for engine oil or gearbox oil ?
Will the oil filter cap still close even if ive missed the hole 🤣🤣 I can't see in as I close it so I'm just hoping it went in
Great video overall, however, it's really risky to do that with the cranking after a fuel filter change, you can destroy your whole fuel system. If you run the high pressure fuel pump dry - it has no lubrication and the bearing will break into small metal particles which will go everywhere and destroy your fuel pump, injectors, fuel lines, common rail, etc... I don't know of pressing the start button doing any sort of "priming", instead you should bleed the fuel system by activating the low pressure fuel pump in the tank for 3 minutes, ISTA can do it easily.
So if someone runs out of fuel in this model of bmw the fuel system will be destroyed ......interesting.
Will this work for a 330e ?
I have a f30,2013 but dont have the litle pan screw cover. Instead i have a hole in some metal cover/protection. Why?
Decent info fella.
Thankyou
Sub'd
Do the air filter first when cars on the ground.
ignition on and off doesnt work with F models, might be risky for hfp
just for info
In Europe, for F30 320d we use oil 5w30😮
I got a 320d 2005 automatic, if I buy all the parts needed can you train me to do my car?
Sorry man I ain’t no mechanic, I’m sure there’s loads of vids for that year car on RUclips!
@Jim D sorry I mean 2012 lol. Done my oil change from your last video as I own the F31 320d. Gonna watch this a few times and give a full service a go. Wondering if you will do a transmission oil change I'd love to see how to do that in this car.
@@josephbrown3647 I am planning to do a gearbox service at some point. Not sure when yet
can someone tell what socket sizes needed for this work?
How often do you need to change air filter and fuel filter? I got my air and fuel filter changed in a garage at about 60,000 miles and there is only 76,000 on it now?
Every time you do a service I think. Don’t quote me but I think if you get the ‘long life’ fuel filters it’ll be longer
@@jimdcars cheers
Does it matter if the car should stay or not fully flat when dipping oil out? Thank you
The car should be on level ground when checking the oil
Do You not need to fill the new fuel filter with diesel before putting it back in?
I didn’t know that, but I don’t have diesel just lying around so done it this way lol
@@jimdcars I don’t know myself 🙈 but I watched the whole video and you did prime it your way so I’ll do the same 😅
I’ve got a 2014 320d F30. Like you, my engine bay is really dirty. How do I go about cleaning it as you can’t use pressurised water to clean it cos of all the electronics. I will appreciate any help. Steve.
I’d just use an all purpose cleaner or soapy water and wipe away after, not actually too sure what the ‘proper’ method is but anything should work
Surfex HD in a foamer sprayer, agitate with brush then just pressure wash it but move quickly and cover the alternator that’s it.
Would a 2015 218d be similar to this?
I think so, Google what engine it has or have a look under the bonnet and see if it looks like mine in the vid
Think the basics are the same. Thank you, great video 🙏
Hello is this all the same for the 318d’s
Pretty sure it’s the same engine so yes. Just double check online
Why does the engine signal appear on the screen after changing the oil Why does the engine signal appear on the screen after switching oil and strainers ,
Nice video but is it OK that your car was not level when draining your oil 😮
Also I know a guy who can remotely set your online service
GSF Car Parts cheaper all of them
How do i find out, what engine as in b47 etc. model my car has?
my VW CC is SOOOOOmuch easier to service . 1 fuel filter is be said the engine, that alone makes this much faster
