Hi Mark! Thanks for posting this! I always was a Bream fan over Williams... This makes me miss him again. (I know he is not dead but I would like to hear him play live again...). Per-Olov
Hi Per! I've never stopped missing Bream, his playing was always so charismatic. I am grateful I saw him in concert when I had the chance. I understand he still gives small concerts, locally. Perhaps next time you come to UK you may be lucky in that way... Take care amigo! Mark.
I have to say, I have never heard the story that Bream did not like the Bagatelles. He recorded the set twice, first on the 1973 record entitled 'Julian Bream 70s' and then on the 1981 record, 'Dedication'. An artist of this calibre and with his repertoire (Graham Wade's recent book gives many past programmes and his recorded repertoire, although just about the largest of any guitarist, did not come close to the size of his performance reperoire) would not record a piece he didn't like twice.
I heard a tale.... once upon a time there was a famous guitarist called Julian Bream who became bored of his standard repetoir and asked a friend of his, called Benjamin Britten, to compose some legendary guitar pieces to truly show off his virtuosity and skill as a musician. Britten came back to Bream and said "I'm afraid I just have these Bagatelle for you". Bream was frustrated as these were no way near hard enough as he was hoping and Britten refused to write anything else as he seen the....
Thanks Mark for your reply. Yes, if you hear anything I will go there and play snooker with him! HIM I can beat, if not you! :-) All the best and thanks! Per
@elvisPTpor What exactly do you think Julian Bream reads when he plays the lute? Tablature combined with time value notation works just as well as standard notation for fretted instruments.
what and where is this video from .... is it a BBC or UK program .... looks like a beautiful setting and program. Any chance you can upload the full video?
Really? He still gives small concerts! Di you know if there is any way to find out when and where? I would love to go there even only for a night! I also enjoyed his company many times. I even celebrated his 60th birthday in a restaurant in Denmark. Strange personality but a great musician!
Per-Olov Kindgren Sir Julian Bream is a pretty charming, elegant man, very bright and polite. Where did you take it from to consider him a strange person?
Bream and Williams are just different. Bream harbors a better tone and more variety of color than John. John's technique is more stable than Bream's. Their way of playing and approach to music is different, which is great because diversity in art is good. I would not want to only see Picasso's paintings, I also want to see others. Julian plays some pieces Better than John and vice versa. For example, Sevilla, john plays terribly compared to Julian. The way john plays it is too technical and doesn't change tone color often. Bream plays it with such intensity and is very dynamic, he owns it. John and Julian both have great qualities that one can analyze and adapt to their own playing. Art inspires.
Williams is too cold, and have not tone colour. He is like a nerd playing, with his big glasses and his unnexpressive face... He just play straight, loud and even... He is just the "father" of the nowadays guitarists generation.
Per, Bream lives in Semley in Wiltshire. As far as I know, Bream gives small recitals locally, it may even be informally. It won't be easy to get details, it helps if you know anyone in that area. I will let you know if I hear anything. Wow, 60th Birthday in Denmark restaurant, that must have been around 1990, I saw him in '99 in Shrewsbury, Shropshire. One day we must swop stories amigo! Meanwhile, take care.
@elvisPTpor :) Im sure that you are right :) I know that I am amateur. I am learning by myself how to play on guitar... and for now tabs are my only source of written music... unfortunetly.
Please, don't spread misinformation if you are not certain of what you are talking about! I am not sure myself if Bream "was angered by" the bagatelles, but I do know that I have seen Bream talk with Walton about appreciating these pieces very much, and I have heard from him how he very much considers these important pieces of 20th century guitar repertoire! :)
A very nice Bream upload thanks. As for some of the comments below it's disgraceful. I'm working on a guitar pro 5 score of the bagatelles. It will show you TAB and notes. Any one who wants to play classical in tab can just look it up on google don't feel pressured by others, music is about enjoyment. The bream not liking the Bagatelles(do not besmirch Bream). He performed them in front of Walton who felt Bream played them better then he had written them .Bream is the yard stick on bagatelles!
They are both great guitarists. In this case we can only talk about tastes, but never say "definitely". However, I prefer the poetry of Bream rather than the way to play of Williams.
Guitar as a kind of Pop/joke instrument and didn't take it seriously, compared to other instruments. Bream was furious at this and he and Britten had a big argument and were never friends again. I hope you all learned a valuable lesson in this story... whatever it is. ;)
I'm not joking. I play Classical Guitar and I certainly don't think of it the same way as Walton does. He wrote the 5 Bagatelles for Julian Bream, at Bream's request - and Bream's disappointment with the Bagatelles combined with Waltons, I don't know - ignorance(?) of the guitar is what cased a rift between the two. I had Britten in my mind while writing that comment and it just slipped out at the time of writing haha.
The idea that Bream didn't like them seems crazy, and to me it's probably mega-bs. Watch the other video of him playing the bagatelle n.2, except from playing it wonderfully he really seems to enjoy it. I don't think he would fake it.
actually Bream said they were "gay" (his words NOT mine) pieces, and this made mr.walton really angry, but Bream was still forced to play them sometimes in his concerts (part of the commissions terms) and you can tell by how displeased and angry bream looks during the performance that this is true. Quite a scandle.. hrm. I must say I enjoy the pieces though, and I think bream still played them good even if he was displeased with them.
@@steveb9325 yes and its good, but honestly, I prefer to hear most pieces interpreted by artists (of either gender) that have significant life experience. One simply hasn't been through much by their early 20's, and that's why ultimately I gravitate towards the interpretation of older musicians, though their technique might not be as dazzling. Which is also why I have zero interest in child and teen prodigies, its great that one can play that well that young, but it's like trying to play King Lear at age 11.
An expressive and lovely piece..thank you.
Perfect tone perfect playing. . . as always.

Rainer B
Indeed! He is an absolute Gentleman.
And his personality is as captivating as his guitar playing.
Did I hear that right? William Walton wrote those just for Julian Bream?

I dont think there is anything from Breams to envy of Williams in terms of technique.

Well said..wonderfully complimentary,as a duo .

totally dude.... ( the error at 00:56 hurts the most , ahhh )
You want a tab for Bagatelles?

Does anyone have a source that he didn't like them at first? I had no idea, that's really interesting.
Romanillos
same thing for me.... the music is interrupted .

is mr Bream the proud owner of a Hauser--what guitar is that ?
Selwyn Katz Yes I think it’s a Hauser II
It's a Romanillos

He loved this enigmatic work!
very fast No. 1
No, this is around 1977, thic concert. His accident was latr, 1984.
Walton himself did not play the guitar.

definitely he is better than JW.
He's probably the liveliest classical performer I've ever seen..
I guess his emotions show in his playing.
Way too many guitarists interpret these pieces too stiffly. Bream always has the groove and the power.
Have you listened to Stephanie Jones playing of these?

A tab? Jesus Christ, what. the. fuck.
