    My uncle's job just gave him all new equipment so he gave me 4 big dell servers and 2 HP procurve switches. Excited to set them up

    I wanted to add, this switch and the 5412zl as well as the 5406r and 5412r models are probably the most reliable piece of electronic equipment. I have run several of these for 12+ years without fault and if you're the original purchaser, you get unlimited warranty...even to this day.

    Still waiting on that follow up vid man! Haha jks. You deserve more subs mate, your vids have the right amount of humor and information delivered in an interesting way. You may have gotten disgruntled with RUclips with it's weird recommendation algorithims and monetary structure and the tech segment is difficult because it's certainly not lacking in content creators but yours are unique and entertaining. Anyway, just my 2 cents.Cheers

    Thanks for taking the time to make this video. I was looking at these switches and was curious about power consumption and build quality. You did a great job conveying this information.

    the GLS driver in my area had to deal with 2 boxes 1 with2x 5308XL and 1 with 2x 5304XL :D 32kg shipped for 25 euro from germany to NL is great price :D The XL series is perfect for retro lan parties :)

    You can save a fair amount of power by only running one PSU and turning off the PoE functions on the switchports. There are still fans and stuff running though, so this is still going to be a fairly hungry switch in terms of power consumption.
    and if you have an old rack mount anything, it can become a shelf to hold your new goodies that have stupid expensive rack ears. (looking at you Juniper) Old server slide rails are great for this kind of thing. Set a few cover plates across the slide rails and voila, insta-shelf. Got an old dumb Fast Ethernet switch? Gut it, rack it and it is now a shelf.
    edit - You can hot swap any module on one of these EXCEPT the management module in the very top slot. You will need to reboot to change that one out. Source: we ran these for almost 15 years in a major convention center. These switches are bomb proof. They sat up in summer heat in filthy, dusty catwalks above exhibit floors with big diesel trucks and propane forklifts running around below. Power failures, constant plugging and unplugging of network cables. These things gave no fucks. They just run. Blow them out with a can of air every so often, give them a reboot...or not. If one of the blades dies, that's as good a time as any to power it down, blow out all the spiders and give the fans a fighting chance. If you want quiet, you could probably upgrade the fans with something newer and more efficient. They're just standard sized things you can get from anywhere.

    So I found your video because I'm interested in getting a 1u unit for my bedroom to replace the crappy consumer stuff I have atm. The cursing made me laugh though. Now I need to find pt2 of this. :)

    I got one of these with all modules filled both copper and fibre, using some of the dynamic routing, radius authentication and a few advanced features, pretty good switch.

    C13 and C15 are both rated for 10 amps. The difference is that C15 is good to 120° C while the C13 is only rated for 70°.

      Depends on which country you're in and which certifying body you're following. IEC says C13/C14 and C15/C16 are 10A only, but that's primarily in place for countries with 240v mains voltage. 10A and 240V is a serious amount of power. But with 120v in N. America, it's not such a big deal. In fact, Underwriters Labs (UL) approves C13/C14 (with 14awg conductors) for 15A. The only difference being the temperature rating between C13/C14 and C15/C16.

    Never ever done with lasers! Actually it is done, the light powers some signal amplifiers in hard to reach places sometimes. Not sure if it is used now, but I read about it in electrooptics book in uni.

    Aruba S2500 is half the price, and do almost the same thing, L3, 10Gbe etc, and also brocade switches

    • @DriveCarToBar
      @DriveCarToBar Год назад

      Older Brocade ICX switches like the 6450 or the 6610 are the business!
      Also, some of the older HP Procurve 3500 series switches will do 10gig and have gotten cheap. If you don't mind learning Juniper, the EX2300 also sports L3 switching and 10gig if you get the optional upgrade for it.

    Is it just me or is anyone out there also concerned about security? Counterfeit chips overlaid on top of the network stack sending packets back to China or Russia? I know it's been done in the past with printer nic's. Makes me a little nervous not buying Network related items from an authorized reseller, authorized distributor, Etc. I.e. 100% genuine. I don't know. Maybe I'm just being a little over paranoid. (en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hardware_Trojan)

      I agree completely. I find the off-brand Chinese tablets, phones, and computers particularly worrisome because they don't even need to do malware in hardware. They could just embed it in the software. I got some stick for that for "being racist", but it's not as if China doesn't engage in cyber warfare-type-stuff (along with many other countries, of course). I'm not too concerned about the HP equipment I bought because it all came from reputable US-based resellers. I mean, you never know. Hopefully AlienVault will catch any malicious traffic. :/
