    Thanks for the comparison, Matthew. We're very proud of our 24-70mm F2.8 DG DN Art and hope your viewers consider it when looking for a full-frame standard zoom.

      The very first standard zoom lens that I bought was a Sigma 28-70 f/2.8 in 1993, back when Sigma's APO lenses seemed like the coolest thing in the world to me. Glad that Sigma has been staying on top of the game, continuing to make great lenses at reasonable prices.

      I'm about to buy my first interchangeable lens camera, I was planning on starting out with the Sigma 14-24 and 24-70 Art lenses, but after watching countless videos for reviews (which are all positive) I've seen a lot of comments in the comment sections about the Sigma lenses having dust issues. This has me a little worried.

    • @MatthewGore
      @MatthewGore  3 года назад +1

      @@TheGeocab This isn't something that I have noticed myself, and I've used my lenses in some pretty rough conditions, but I suppose it's possible. A couple of things, though: in general, dust in the lens has no appreciable effect on image quality... it's more the sort of thing that bothers collectors rather than photographers. If you're talking about the lens sucking dust into the camera body and onto the sensor... well, I have dust problems regardless of what sensor I use, when I shoot Sony. Consequently, I've purchased a pack of sensor cleaning swabs and sensor fluid, and I always carry it with me when I'm traveling, now. It takes about 5 minutes in a quiet, still-aired place to clean a sensor, so nothing that I'd really worry about when choosing a lens. Good luck!

    Thank you for a good review! This made my decision a bit clearer. One question, both lenses is on this “black week” or “black friday” on sale. The Tamron with the sales price and cashback is now 50% off compared to the Sigma. So I guess that this is a nobrainer for the Tamron? I already have the 17-28 Tamron for the wide shots.

      Hi William. I'm probably not going to review the Samyang any time soon, but it'll definitely be on my list for the future. From what I've seen, it looks like a good lens, but Samyang's autofocus hasn't been up to speed with Sigma and Tamron in the past, so I'm a little skeptical of their lenses still. • @lino100x100

    Modern lenses are all stellar in image sharpness, because it's what all customers are looking for...
    But there are other features to consider, like distorsion, vignetting, chromtic aberrations, build quality, bokeh quality (tamron it's terrible) and stabilizer....
    That said, for an hobbist the switch to mirrorless it's only justified by a smaller and lighter setup, so there's no sense in buying heavy lenses, like 2.8 zoom, especially with modern sensor. So i would pick the tamron 2875 or the fantastic sony 24105 G.
    If I was a pro, i probably would go for sony or sigma 2570 2.8 depending on budget.

Somehow you really captured the mood and feeling of the people. One question, in the shots of downtown that you were using to compare the sharpness at various focal lengths and apertures, I'm curious where you shot those from. It looked a lot like the 12th Street Bridge overlook but seemed a slightly different angle. Anyway, great stuff, subbed!

      Probably because all of the modern, full-frame Sony cameras that they'd fit have in-body image stabilization which works really well at these focal lengths (at least, it's at its best at this range... there's some dispute about how well it works with telephotos), so leaving out stabilization in the lens saves on size, weight, and cost. Of course, that doesn't help if you're shooting the lens on an APS-C body that doesn't have IBIS, but for those cases there's the Tamron 17-70 f/2.8 VC, I guess.

      Personally, I can only say that I never had any problems with the Sigma lens collecting dust (at least, no more than any other lens). More generally, though, dust inside of lenses does not affect the image quality since it's not on the focal plane (unlike dust on a sensor, which is a serious issue... but even then, only when the aperture is stopped down). So, I guess the answer is it's not a universal issue, and it's an issue that doesn't have any practical effects.

    I can only buy one :/ which would you take? I like doing short movies, portrait, animal, and travel :)
    I know both are amazing.

      Ultimately, I'd probably go with the Sigma. I'm happy with the Tamron because of the weight and the fact that it plays nicely with the 17-28mm (just published that review this morning) because it's also light and covers the extra wide-angle range that I need, but if I were deciding based on the single lens alone... the Sigma.

    Hi! Thank you for your amazing video! I would love if you share with me how is the weather proof holding on on the tamron? I am using the sigma now and sadly I realize that it is collecting dust like a vacuum cleaner and I have to open and clean it by my self every few weeks... This makes me think to sell my sigma 24-70 and 85 for 28-70 and 70-180 by tamron... Thank you in advance!

    • @MatthewGore
      @MatthewGore  3 года назад

      I haven't had any dust problem with the Tamron, and I've been using it for years now. But dust inside a lens isn't a real problem, either... it's not going to affect image quality. Dust on the sensor is another issue... and I've had plenty of problems with that (especially in India), but that was more an issue of changing lenses rather than using any particular lens.

    Which is faster in focus speed Sigma 24 - 70mm vs Tamron 28 75 mm for video?

    • @MatthewGore
      @MatthewGore  3 года назад +1

      I don't really shoot video, so I'm not sure about these lenses video performance. For photography, they're both nice and fast... I've used the Tamron for some sports (basketball) video and it does well. The Sigma seems about the same speed, but I haven't tested it as thoroughly. Sorry.

    in your opinion matt,
    which lens has better colors?

    • @TimandLauren
      @TimandLauren 3 года назад

      going off what you said, that the tamron has more contrast, are you saying that tamron has punchier colors?

    • @MatthewGore
      @MatthewGore  3 года назад +1

      When I said that the Tamron had more contrast, it was just in reference to those particular shots... and it may have been the result of the haze off the water. Both lenses had good color, for me.
      I don't shoot video, in general, and when it comes to photos, I shoot RAW. With both lenses, the RAW files are somewhat flat, as you'd expect... and I always create a color profile for RAW processing from a color checker and either the DataColor software or LumaRiver. After that, the colors are identical and accurate, regardless of which lens I'm using.
      For my purposes, I've never had any problems getting accurate colors and contrasty images with either lens... I can't say that one is better than the other in that regard. Sorry!

    Is the sigma 24-70mm good for both landscape and Portraits?

    • @MatthewGore
      @MatthewGore  3 года назад

      Yes, definitely. It's not the perfect lens for portraits, but it's a good one, and it's a very good choice for landscapes. Ultimately, any good lens can be a good portrait lens... some people shoot good, interesting portraits with wide angles, and some with long telephotos. Traditionally, lenses in the 85-135mm range are considered most flattering to models (wider lenses can make them look a little heftier than real life, while longer lenses can make people look a little flat), but 50-70mm are pretty popular too.

      They're all really good, in my experience. There are a couple of primes that are a little less amazing, but they're all very good. If there's a problem with them, I've had some issues with autofocus on Sony, but I never really shoot video with Canon so I don't know there. Autofocus for photos is good in both systems, but better with Canon.

      @@crayshaunhenderson1265 Hey... sorry, The Wet Pen is also me (a second hobby), and I just forgot to switch accounts before responding to you. B-roll is extra video footage that's basically filler... it's decorative and can help set the scene for your main subject. So, if you were publishing a video about a football game in which the Seahawks win, you might show some B-roll of the stadium, crowd or the cheerleaders in between clips or at the beginning or end.
