They are carried out every day by private citizens treating pets with medical issues like cancer. Heck, I inject insulin every day, it's not hard.
The injection machine is very easy to reprogram as well. They simply set it to deliver all the solution instead of you getting a tiny bit by pressing a button. It is a handy skill if you need more morphine than given.

    Dr. Kaveh. .
    As a retired nurse. . .
    I would volunteer my services
    To help with executions.
NOT because I believe in capital punishment-
At 77 I believe in rehabilitation not in
    State sanctioned murder.
But because I would do anything in my power
    To prevent anyone from suffering.
Before anyone starts to call me names
For supporting empathic treatment of someone
Who has possibly taken a life in a particularly
    Heinous manner. . . I understand that a person
Who has caused the death of others may not,
    In their eyes deserve mercy,
But that makes society act as heartlessly
As the criminal sentenced to execution.
As I said. . .I just want to provide as much kindness
At the moment of death of a murderer, as I would to a patient
    In the hospital.
Obviously there are many facets to this question.
We need to go back to injectables
    Despite your excellent presentation.
Worked for years in unit where we received
Post op Open Heart, many complicated Thoracic
    Procedures, Heart Transplants, Lung Transplants
And heart/solid organ transplants (tho not liver-we
    Sent those to MICU).
    Back to the question-
    Not having medical personnel
    Present and involved is just
    Asking for Law suits.

I am a retired safety manager and scuba diver. I worked in a facility that did rocket testing with vacuum chambers. My dive buddy was escorting some visitors and they opened a hatch and walked in one of these chambers my buddy was one of the last to enter he saw the visitors start to pass out. He grab the guy in front of him. Got that guy out of the chamber grab an air pack and had an other person get on air and they rescued the last two in side the chamber. All three survived, one was hospitalized. Another time we had an air pack test /certification meter that ran on nitrogen it developed a leak after twenty years of use and was leaking nitrogen into the air side of the system used for the final test of breathing the air pack one of the testers passed out but the breathing the air pack , but we didn’t have straps on the mask, so he woke up quickly. The biggest issue with nitrogen is that the guy being executed knows he’s going to die.

Potassium burns bad when you get it by itself, without another iv of salt water diluting it. The burn spreads deeper and deeper throughout your body the longer it is dripping in you. @@hicknopunkI could not agree more on the severe pain with potassium being given directly via an IV undiluted! Twice on my last hospitalization my potassium level was low and they were supposed to piggyback with my regular IV. The nurse turned off the IV, running straight potassium into a vein. The pain was horrible. The nurse finally came back in, but started the IV at a slow trip, so not diluting the potassium enough and offered ice packs to help with the burning pain. This happened a 2nd time and I was beyond irritated. As a retired nurse I raised holy heck. Bad enough it happened once, but to have it happen twice, I was absolutely spitting bullets. Smith was incarcerated for around 30 years, during which time he lived under threat of death. They then attempted to execute him one time and that attempt was not entirely dissimilar to the crime he committed. Then they had a second go, during which time he died slowly (even if you want to blame him for holding his breath, that would only have extended the process a short amount).
In a lot of parts of the world, just being incarcerated for that length of time would be regarded as a sufficient punishment, without throwing in an attempted execution and a "successful" execution.
Yes, his victim was killed, yes, Smith should never have killed her (and her husband shouldn't have hired him to do the deed), but if we're asking whether Smith or the Alabama "justice" system is the greater arsehole, I have to give the award to the Alabama "justice" system for essentially punishing Smith three times for the one crime.

Dr Kaveh, thank you for your informative content. I always learn a great deal from you. I found you during the Maya trial and was intrigued because I was diagnosed with TN and GN (Trigeminal and Glossopharyngeal Neuralgia) in 2012. I have tried too many treatment options to count or list here, but Ketamine is one that has helped. I am grateful you are willing to discuss the controversial topics that most doctors would not. I find there is a strange dichotomy though, with doctors and society as a whole when it comes to this topic and the topic of late term ending of a pregnancy. I believe life has value and there is a huge conflict that I am unable to resolve in my heart and mind, to say that a Dr cannot be involved in execution, yet they are able to terminate a late term pregnancy (when there is no risk of harm to the mother). I truly would like to understand how though, is one legitimized, and the other demonized? I am sure my views are too controversial, even for this conversation, but it is a hard topic that no one is willing to have, but i feel if we are going to take a stand for life, then we have to do just that. (I am sure this comment will get blasted with hate, because that is what people do now. Instead of having civil debate, and real discussion, people resort to name calling and bullying... You might even delete my comment as well, and I understand that too, unfortunately.) Thank you for sharing your knowledge and broaching the 'untouchable' topics.

Abortion should be demonized. In New York, if the mother doesn’t like her baby, they leave it to starve. That’s way more evil, yet, this anesthesiologist (who probable has killed patients through negligence) has zero concern over the murder victim, who left two sons motherless. Trying to attribute the same sympathy for a “botched execution” is beyond disgusting. Did the murderer care as his victim begged for her life? Did she suffer? No, he commited a heinous crime, was judged by a jury of his peers, who decided he deserved death. No qualms as an Alabamian, and a nurse.

I'm glad you asked, as I was wondering just about the same. I have had to hold my animals as they were put to sleep, it's bittersweet, as you don't want them to suffer but don't want them to go. Ultimately, being that they are so sick, I couldn't have just let them suffer. I've always seen them peacefully go to sleep in less than a minute. Why are we not able to do this for humans?

I used to be a veterinary technician and have performed pet euthanasia. If you get the liquid outside of the vein, it’s painful. Also if you don’t inject fast enough, there can be an excitatory phase where the animal may cry out or paddle their legs or convulse. The animal is not awake at that time, but it is disturbing to see. It would take a lot of euthanasia solution for something as large as a person. However, I have heard of veterinary professionals who hooked themselves up to an IV drip and committed suicide, or attempted it.

Legally veterinarians can lose their licenses if they do anything on/to a human. Even doing something like stitches could lose them their license. Also the vast majority of veterinarians deal almost entirely with dog and cat biology, but primate biology (human) is very different. You’d need someone with a lot of exotic experience (like a zoo vet) and those vets are pretty rare. So even if they weren’t bound by the limits of their license, and were willing, the average vet may not be as big an improvement as you’d think.

Thank you for covering these topics. A couple topics would nice to hear about in the future:
    1. Physician assisted suicide (what is the medication give), how does it act in the body and dies the patient feel anything?
    2. Why does a person vomit or get sick after epidural but not sick at all with the normal prophal.
    3. Why is Ketamene not recommended being used for D.I.D. (M.P.D in the old DSM), when people have developed it due to major childhood trauma, and continued through adulthood? Have you seen benefits from it in M.P.D?
    4. How can we convince doctors that in surgeries that they need to be sure that they keep us asleep during the removal of the tube. I wake up and am awake when they are removing tube. So much awake, that I know they are pulling it out. It is a massive fear eventide I am put to sleep for surgery.
    5. Silly but doctor recommended due to my age a colonoscopy. My mother gave her a sedative but sedatives, even vercit do not work good on me. What medication is used for a coloniscopy and if we are asked to do one, can be asked to be knocked out completely instead of the "lighter" medication like veracity, epidural, etc.
    6. Why does asthma make it harder to talk, eat and drink etc (O2 low counts)
    7. Can we request to be put to sleeopaon meds (given during a spinal rap?...best yet be k kicked asleep. I have interracial hypertension and even with a guided laser machine, they poke my spinal cord 5 or more times before they actually get my clear fluid out. I cannot handle it anymore. I need a pain medication and at this point probably a sedative.
Lastly, I think it is excellent that doctors refuse to assist in the "death squad" of our prison system. Not aware but am sure Nurses would not kill others as well. Sad to hear that other health care professionals would consider it.

I remember passing out in a BJJ class many years ago. I was pinned with all my opponent’s weight on my chest as he tried to get me in an armbar. I struggled a lot trying to get unpinned, and I held my breath while struggling. Finally I stopped struggling and I couldn’t hold my breath anymore, and exhaled. I remember my vision turning gray and then blacking out. I couldn’t inhale at all with my chest being compressed and I was unconscious. Obviously my opponent then moved, and my unconscious body started breathing again or I wouldn’t be here. I woke up extremely confused, in an armbar, staring at the ceiling, and completely paralyzed except for my eyes and breathing. It was terrifying trying to bend my wrist, elbow, or anything but my body wasn’t responding to any commands from my brain. After a few seconds my whole body went into a spasm of extension of my arms and legs that I couldn’t control and I lost consciousness again, I guess maybe I was having a seizure, I don’t know. When I woke up again I was lying on my side, my opponent must have placed me into recovery position. I was breathing very rapid, deep breaths, and in a few seconds I was able to move again. I couldn’t fall asleep for a long time later that night, every time I tried I would startle myself awake because I felt like I was dying. I failed that semester at university. I had the PTSD from this for a long time. Although terrifying, I don’t recall the event as being painful.

This is a great video for understanding and instruction. Thanks doc! Didn’t know that about “emia.”
I do know a lot about hypoxia and I have a personal experience. While living in Eureka, CA we had a rodent problem in da house. We tried all the ways of getting rid of them. There’s really no point in using “have a heart traps” with rats, you’re just going to displace your problem to someone else unless you want to drive a rat way out into the country where it will probably die anyway. Well we got sick of rats getting their legs caught in traditional catch traps and having to then deal with an injured and not dead rat. One of them had to be dispatched by the blow of a head of an axe. Another executed itself by sitting on top of the nice warm electrical box while it was avoiding a trap. The water bucket traps don’t work, rat too smart. I’m allergic to cats. We already had two large dogs (but the problem did get better when we adopted a husky, who was better at catching rats than the larger dogs.)But it came to a time when we didn’t have husky and we needed to dispatch some rats. One of the largest rats we ever caught, I believe my ex actually caught him by hand while he was lounging on our water heater. We didn’t know what to do with it so we decided to try gassing it because we read sometimes vets do that. Also nazis. He is a weed grower so I believe we used carbon dioxide and not nitrogen. It was such a BAD IDEA. I would never advocate gassing humans after seeing that. The rat screamed I swear. If we must do capital punishment, which I thank the doctor for exposing these major issues, but if we must do capital punishment then let the country bumpkins dispatch with a method they know and love. Not only do you not want Billy Bob corrections officer placing an IV, you also don’t want to use gas because it’s just a bad look. It looks like nazis and when the hypoxia sets in it looks painful and lacking in mercy. Let the rednecks put a bullet in him or don’t do capital punishment

Take a look at "Reduced Oxygen Breathing Device" they use to train pilots for high altitude hypoxia awareness.
It can reduce the pilots oxygen intake to ~5% oxygen intake, not 21% of normal air.
I personally think it's a poor substitute for the altitude chamber for the "startle factor" and possible ear pressurization complications, that could also occur in flight if there is an explosive decompression at 40,000ft.

Carbon monoxide could also be an alternative, that causes sedation and hypoxia. When I worked in the Emergency room we saw countless numbers of folks affected by carbon monoxide, either intentionally (suicide attempts) or accidental through generator use or heating methods malfunctioning. The ones we saved stated they had zero pain and or knowledge it was even happening. Hemoglobin’s binding affinity for carbon monoxide is 300 times greater than its affinity for oxygen. As a result, small amounts of carbon monoxide can dramatically reduce hemoglobin’s ability to transport oxygen, therefore asphyxiating the patient/inmate.

I myself had my eye botched resulting in a stitched left in my eye for a year and a half before it was removed by another doctor. It was pushed back in my eye because it was coming out. The original doctor who did this to me refused to take it out because of my insurance and of personality differences.

Very informative. My late question for you Doctor is: Why do they feed people before administration when we fast for surgeries and even animals do as well, and a part B why are they not using sodium pentobarbital in a bolus push like we do for veterinary? Thank you! ❤ I am aware that phenetoyn burns, I am referring to Fatal Plus, not Beuthasol. This can be ingested also, but you would vomit it tastes foul to avoid poisonings. Any drug like that works slower with food and risks choking. You would need skilled people to raise a vein in any case and avoid blowing that vein. Veterinarians have some of the highest suicide rates in the country due to access. It is gold standard to use this drug IV only regularly. (No, you can not tranquilize and do heart sticks anymore), I had to be re certified. NO we did not do that with a corneal reflex absolutely not. No blink reflex with Ketamine first. I am not suggesting anything other than IV. Why do they not use it? Dogs go down as fast as you can press that plunger. I should say pre surgery mix of Ketamine and Anased IM first. Then the IV administration. Why do they not use this. FP is a CC per 10 lbs and actually can kill at half that, hence the name. And it is water soluable powder, no burning additives.

RS is a condition where the fine blood vessels close up for no known reason. It affects the fingers and the toes. They can get very cold and turn white! The nitroglycerin opens up those blood vessels to let the blood flow to these extremities. When I first developed the condition, I almost lost the tips of several of my toes because the tissue was being starved of blood. I am currently recovering from having my big toe nail being ripped-off, and the RS might slow down the healing process. I have to be very watchful and keep my feet warm.

I intubate geckos and Great Danes, our ET tubes range from 18g catheters, true ETTs starting at 3.0 and go up to 11s. I’m not sure how much it varies in human hospitals but yes there’s a huge range in sizes.

I doubt they have only one size tube because pediatric surgery and teens exist too as do people with congenital or traumatic conditions that may drastically increase or decrease the size of their body, chest cavity, or airways.

Would a laparoscopic surgery blowing you up with CO2 ve considered manual Bends?? It's so painful and I could touch my ribs and across my body and felt like bubble wrapping pastic popping as I presses on it. Very painful in the back and everywhere for weeks for me. Does that mean I had "Bends" from it??

The bends is when you have bubbles in your bloodstream. That bubble wrap feeling is from air bubbles that went under the skin. It’s a completely different thing.

Thank you for addressing this. The capital punishment issue is one thing. Listening to this was informative that is never discussed. I always thought doctors were the ones to administer the drugs. Dang. This should be against the law.

It's sad because the public has been also having ways to add stress to strain of all decisions that are made during a violent defense or even at a level that has idea to stop such. Some see the idea of invasion of body snatching and some see multi factor points about why . Thanks sharing . At best imo the mindset could be tears because two lives or more are ruined...as result

Would the 'process' not be quicker if the N was pressuried - partial pressure of N vs O2?
It'd a long time since I sat in a pressure tank using pressure breathing to cope with 30,000ft + cabin alt. By the way, whilst hypoxic we used to do various tasks - like writing a nursery rhyme but also describe our individual symptoms to recognise them in future. Blue fingertips and tingling, for example.
Always used to consume brown beer and curry the night before and have beans for breakfast. No white fog upon rapid decom - it was beige and the chamber suddenly stank of bodily gasses!!!

the intake of N2 is not the cause the loss of O2 is. That said you could certainly induce nitrogen narcosis that way.
For that matter Xenon is an inherently suffocating AND anaesthetic gas, they could just use xenon.

Many times, it is hard to find a person's veins; the fact that prison personnel couldn't isn't unusual. Kenneth essentially ended up suffocating on the nitrogen because he fought the procedure by trying to hold his breath.

Nitroglycerin for medicine was discovered by accident, before dynamite, liquid nitroglycerin was used for blasting and those who handled it got it on their skin. This was long before the days of PPE.

They should at least have someone insert the IV properly. Although a person who is being executed probably didn't think about what they were doing.

You are brilliant without a shadow of doubt.
I guess my question is why the pain and suffering is the explanation without considering why the punishment was delivered.
Yes no licensed professional would agree to being part of this act totally agree but very educational despite a few things noted here.
Staying in your lane should be of note. Stay in your lane. Let the court of law handle what is just because that is where they are trained.
    Anesthesiologist /Judges are just that.
Respectfully mixing them just seems wrong.

i WOULD MUCH PREFER dying even in a non-optimal execution than spend longer than 2 years in prison. I have GI issues and eczema so just prison time would be torturous to me.

The reason sodium pentathol is no longer used in lethal injection is because the companies who provide it have refused to sell it for this purpose. They maintain, their drug is for healing and not killing.
