    Ironically it's unoriginality makes it original today because there isn't many old fashioned rpgs with next gen visuals like this.

But i personally think CoOP and playing as avatar online characters and shit like that would other wise ruin the immersion and experience of this grandiose EPIC that is meant to be a single player Rpg game. I just finished it, it was my very first dragon quest. At first I thought it was very dull and the music kinda outdated but it grew on me the more I played. I loved every main character , never understood why everyone didn't like veronica, I thought she was funny and the fact that she was in a little girl body made it even funnier. And also the voice actors , I think they did a fantastic job and i'm the kind of weeb who despises english dubs in my jrpgs.
    What else... pep attacks, some were funny, other ones were cool; costumes , I wish there is a transmog system of some sort; gambling I HATED that part because it forced me to play it to complete a sidequest; story cliche, old but it's told in a very good way; post-game content was amazing, I dare to say it is one of the best post game content out there... etc etc
    And to finish this, I'm gonna whine about to 3 things I didn't see in the game:
    1. Mc not revealing what was happening at the beginning of the post-game
    2. Not seeing Dundrassil being restored to it's former glory
    3. Not seeing the wedding of mc (even though there is a picture)
    To sum it up , amazing game 9/10 would pay someone to make me forget everything and played it alm over again

Xenoblade chronicles 2 is by far king of RPGs of this generation and FFIX a close second depending on which battle style you like better. DQ11 still pretty gud tho if your a beginner, it just feels like I outgrew it a long time ago.

    Yo @6:59 mentioning the games difficulty being too easy is misleading as they normally are. Its obvious they separated the normal difficulty by allowing you to enable it with draconian options so it would be more appealing to western casual players. You don’t even have to research the options to pick as some of the draconian options are how you would play naturally anyways if you were to merely pick
    “All enemies are super strong” game quickly changes to the more familiar experience. Maybe limiting your experience from weak enemies could be added as well but I bet that option just turns the game into a grind fest more familiar of the NES versions. I only really liked 3 and it still had a massive leveling marathon you had to endure to even have a small chance of surviving the ridiculously overpowered final boss.
    Anyways, point is just picking all enemies are super string pretty much satisfies typical dragon quest gameplay.
    Square should have had the settings that give the typical experience enabled by default and then only after the fact have the player choose to disable them.
    Rather then the other way around

  • @holmholmsen4158
    @holmholmsen4158 5 лет назад +2

    About 15 hours into this game now, and so far it's a complete slog. The whole world feels like a movie set, completely hollow. What's the point in having a big world if almost nothing in it can be interacted with in a meaningful (or let's be honest, any) way? Why even have dungeons when it's just a long corridor with no puzzles or anything to stand in your way except some very easily avoidable monsters thrown in here and there? I just got back from the "dungeon" by Gondolia where you get the magic water to heal the mute boy. You can literally sprint from the entrance to the mini-boss at the end without facing a single obstacle. Of course, I took the long way first, because as everyone knows, that's where the goodies are. Nope. Nothing. Just the same recycled assets and nothing to interact with. I went back the short route and found a single treasure chest with some worthless junk in it. It's been the same for the entire game so far, both in towns and in the field areas. Barely any hidden passageways or fun secrets to uncover, just corridors filled with nothing, designed to waste your time in order to create the illusion that you've actually played a game.
    So what does that leave? The battle system might not be all bad, but I wouldn't know, because the only semblance of strategy required is to set Serena to "focus on healing" and then bash away with the rest. Equipment is an afterthought, as some stuff is just straight up better than other stuff, so of course I'll use that. I'm not too far in, granted, so I'm expecting the difficulty to pick up a bit. It's just a bummer that the battles feel like a chore for more than a dozen hours into a game in which the main activity is fighting monsters.
    The story is EXTREMELY standard chosen-hero-saves-world-from-evil fare, which, at first, I was ok with. I thought it was it was kind of cool they just embraced the old-school JRPG style to the fullest. But when everything else in the game feels like filler the bland story and one-note characters start to irritate me. It's like they threw in every trope and cliche from the last 30 years of JRPGs and just left it like that. Where exactly have the developers put any effort in? In making the game long?
    The graphics are fine, I guess, at least the character models are. The environments look good from a distance, but up close they're harsh and blocky and all too often it's just a completely naked corridor with nothing to mix it up at all. Meh.
    The music ranges from forgettable at best to absolutely grating at worst. The same can be said for the voice acting, though, mercifully, you can turn it off.
    Aside from that the game just has a bunch of stupid fluff put in to give the impression that there's more to it than there actually is, like being able to move around during battles but it having no impact on what happens. Or the gondolas in Gondolia (ugh) that you can get in and row around in for absolutely no reason. Or the horse race. Or the "platforming". Or the monsters you can tame to get you to places you can't get to on foot.
    You might say the game gets better after a while, and that may very well be, I just don't think it's too much to ask that there is some fun to be had the first fifteen hours. I'll soldier on for a bit, but I don't think I can take 70 hours of this stuff.
    I never write rants like this, and I know I'm a bit late to the party. It's just that this is another one in a line of critically lauded games I've played lately that have disappointed massively (Ni No Kuni 2, Horizon Zero Dawn, Far Cry 5, etc). This was the last straw.

    I've only ever played DQ8 on the DS, many years ago. I was never into it despite being an FF and JRPG fan in general. I know this is super popular in Japan and is FF's rival to an equal level over there compared to the west where FF seems to be more popular, but with this being now in the PS Plus extra catalog and tons of hours of gameplay, I want to try this one.

      I started RPGs way back with DQIV on NES. At this point in my life I want to experience as many great RPGs as possible. And I still have RPGs even as back on the SNES or PS1 that I still haven't beaten. So it's about time yeah. When I was a teen I played FFIV for SNES probably 10-12 times, seriously. But now not only am I older, many great RPGs have come out since then. There is just more to chose from now compared to when SNES was new. The RPG was sort of fresh and new and not a lot of them to chose from in the US.

      Depends how good you want it to look. Even the base ps4 runs it sub-1080p. Really cannot wait to see what will they do with the switch,.. just hope it is not a day and night thing, like DQ builders (this one performs quite well on the switch,.. just at 720P) or heroes ,.. that looks more like a vita version than ps4 one (or preform like crap). Either way, will probably get it on both,.. PS4 in 18 hours ,.. Switch in a year of it's release.

      Kitase(director of ff6,7,8 and 10) basically said that he doesn't like to use words such as "ff like" believing this will put developers in something of a creative box and would rather leave the debate on what ff is for critics and future historians, I think this shows that the ff series isn't meant to be a traditional series its basically made to be the polar opposite to DQ.

    • @whatitdu6368

      Because there's no reason to have 2 series dedicated to the same audience. I'm checking out this review to see if there is anything about this game that interests me where other DQ games did nothing for me. I would say no. It looks like the other DQ games. That's why FF varied up the series. Nothing wrong with DQ for those that enjoy it. Just not every jrpg fan's thing

    • @UltimateGattai
      @UltimateGattai 6 лет назад +1

      I think they changed modern FFs too much, almost everything has been a lowpoint or a mixed bag after X, I find it really hard to like 15, but World of Final Fantasy was so good. But then you have games like Persona where they just seem to have a naturally progression or refinement of the series.

    While i agree with some people’s sentiment that the kotaku review appropriately praises the game, and does a really great job of selling it to the audience...this review is actually a bit more accurate and fair (Rogers goes into so much depth that he almost ruins the element of discovery by spoiling every nuance that a player should be experiencing themselves). ...anyway....I’ve been playing the game for about 15 hours now, and the music is so atrocious that it’s quite often ruining my immersion. Also...i found classic dragon quest games to sort of be superficially difficult. It was easy to die if you didn’t realize what invisible level you needed to be in order to beat a boss. And losing to them often meant a significant and annoying waste of time repeating an entire dungeon. Their slow pace, and simplistic systems (that often lacked true strategy) were to blame, and repeating a dungeon that was already boring and tedious was mind numbing. With that said, i find it shocking that this game feels like the easiest in the series so far. the addition of the pep system, and the forging system, both potentially open a lot of strategic options....and all of the quality of life changes make repeating an area much less punishing. So why not capitalize on that system and make the game MORE challenging? It feels like a wasted opportunity (so far). At least the draconian quests add some optional challenge...although I’ve never really liked applying optional challenge, it feels like laziness on the part of the developers so that they can call the game “accessible to all audiences”

    • @corneliusagrippa4613
      @corneliusagrippa4613 6 лет назад

      It's NO different than choosing the difficulty at the start of the game. It literally IS that. Video games have had difficulty levels since the early days. Get a clue, its only optional if you know nothing.
      You must select very easy on every game and bitch that "well the difficulty is optional, and this game is waaay too easy!! Waaah!"

    • @silentdragon1019
      @silentdragon1019 4 месяца назад

      Calling the ability to choose difficulty levels lazy is one of the most stupid things I’ve ever heard. From a game design standpoint an optional difficulty mode requires the developers to add an alternate version of EVERY SINGLE ENEMY TYPE in the game with increased stats which is not even close to lazy for reference here is what that code would look like:
      BEAST_KNIGHT:
      If hard_mode == true:
      Hp = 48
      Mp = 18
      Atk = 12
      Else:
      Hp = 32
      Mp = 8
      Atk = 9
      Abilities [JUMP_SLASH];
      And that’s a simplified version of said code written from memory and also accessibility matters in games this game is made for a wide range of audience from kids to adults and age absolutely matters in games as a 8 year old you have zero fucking clue what your doing and suck ass and as you grow up you get better at games so for any game that is meant for kids-adults you are going to have the optional difficulty modes because there is a large skill range in your market and before you go and tell everyone on twitter that a salty game dev is explaining game design to you I want you to know I’m not a game dev just a sophomore in high school that likes coding

      Apperently I enjoy old school NES jrpgs then, I never played any before. I saw a youtuber play it, noticed the Akira Toriyama style, liked the start of the story (Heliodor) and bought it.
      40 hours later, I got to act 2, started a new character because of underleveling on the first one (makes the game a lot harder as well which is fine, but companion levels are wonky).

    I would agree that the game could stand to steer you more towards a certain strategy for some boss battles, but otherwise, if you find the game too easy, you should stop over-grinding levels. The basic mob fights will last a turn or two longer. As well, every boss fight I've encountered so far - about 25 hours into the game - has left me worried that I wouldn't be able to complete it. I've completed a boss fight where my last character had 2 hp remaining. The game is as easy or as tough as you make it. :)

    "Games of its ilk" sounds bad. I had to double check the definition of 'ilk' as I've only heard that word as a negative. The classic JRPG nature is why I love it. While Final Fantasy has lost its way requiring bravely default & octopath traveler for that old school goodness. Dragon Quest sticks to its roots is a positive for me.
    I got into the series when ps2 DQ8 launched with Final Fantasy 12 demo disc & amazing box art cover I was so pleasantly surprised by it I went back to play all the older ones released on DS. Dragon Quest 5 ended up being my favorite & DQ7 being my least favorite. I'm not going to rank 11 yet until I finish it but it appears to be great so far. And cheers to the community who made the mod for the Orchestral OST on PC!
