If I remember correctly, I watched some behind the record thing a few years ago that said that when she sang this she was thinking about her late mother, so the pain she displays isn't her selling it, it's real. That's why you can believe it's her emotions, is because they truly are her emotions.

Nothing Compares 2 U" is a song written and composed by Prince for The Family and the song was featured on their eponymous album The Family. It was later made famous by Irish recording artist Sinéad O'Connor, whose arrangement was released as the second single from her second studio album, I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got. Source Wikipedia

Prince was an amazing artist and lyricist...such a beautiful song, and Sinead had the vocals to do this painful love song justice. I believe Sinead O'Connor suffers from Borderline Personality Disorder, so she can *really* belt out that pain of abandonment.

You should watch her do this song live in 1990 at a concert in Chile. It's on her channel. She lets out a wail in the middle that she doesn't do on this recorded version. It is jaw dropping. Just fan-tab-u-lous-ly unbelievable. Incredible voice.

Sinead O'Conner's version is my favorite and I believe Prince's as well. It is not even my favorite song on the album! Feels So Different starts off the album with the serenity prayer and the song is heavy with emotion. Sinead was either before her time, or as I see it, right on time. Her references in lyrics & in composition are great when it comes to forecasting the sign of the times. Prince would not just lend his lyrics out to anyone. Sinead has always been outspoken and steps ahead of socially accepted norms. I heart Sinead!

Just so you know Prince originally wrote Nothing Compares 2 U for a band called The Family. It was Sinead’s Manager who suggested she do a cover of the song. There is also way more to Sinead than Nothing Compares 2 U which is from her second album. Check out her first album The Lion & The Cobra which she recorded when she was only 19 while pregnant. She went on to create a prolific body of work, each album amazing. A true musical genius.

As a Scotsman, I always wondered where the "sh" sound came from in the name Sean. Again, people who don't speak the dialect always seem to pronounce things differently, depending on the region they were born.

She had a promising career until she went on Saturday Night Live and at the end of a song she held up a picture of the Pope and ripped it in half. Sinead has presented with severe mental health issues. If I recall, she would later in life disclose publicly that she had been sexually abused by man of the cloth. If my recollection is accurate, one could understand why she ripped the pope's picture in half on live TV. I think she was one of the thousands of adults who had been harmed by a member of the clergy in the Catholic church.

Irish musicians and vocalists are amongst the most talented in the world. She was in pain because of some of the abuses of the Catholic Church in Ireland and part due to her mother's mental illness. In protest, she tore up a picture of the Pope (leader of Catholic Church) on Saturday Night Live and it was SO controversial, it tanked her career forever.
