This video and song blasted through MTV. It's hard to remember how god-awful stupid the music and culture had become when this landed. "120 minutes" launched it, but it couldn't be contained there. It was like all the silly pop culture and superficial goofiness hit the pause button for a few minutes. It stripped things bare and resonated in a way that had been missing for too long. I'll die on the hill saying that this particular song and this particular performance was literally the thing that started killing hair-metal and ushered in a new shift in taste and sensibilities. It wasn't just part of the shift. It was the push.

I have never seen so many grown men affected by a singer as I did when I went into the dining hall on that day. Big boys don't cry, but some were only just managing to hold back the tears from falling into their food. However, you are right about the fact that she thinks about her mother every time she sings it, which is the reason for the tears and sadness and the pain in her voice. Her mother was extremely emotionally, physically, and sexually, abusive towards her. Somehow, somewhere in her beautiful heart, she still longed for her mother. Prince wrote this song in 1984. Sinead O’Connor did this cover version in 1990. It went to no.1 in the UK charts and no.1 in 18 other countries. She tweaked the script slightly to make it a female version. The part she had tears in (All the flowers you planted, Mama, in the backyard) was thinking about her mum, who died in a car crash three weeks before. She had a very difficult life with her mum, and wanted to forgive her, but it was too late. All the other lyrics of this song (written by Prince) wasn’t about her life. She chose this song because she loved it herself.

So Sineads mother died in a car crash when Sinead was 18,the verse about the flowers dying reminded her of her mother which is why she got so emotional.

You mean the mother who was incredibly abusive to her, physically, psychologically? The same mother who forced her to stay live outside for over a week, sleeping in the garden? Yeah, I might get emotional thinking of that, too.

Sinead mentioned in her book that while filming the video she started thinking about her mother who at that time had recently died and they had a turbulent relationship, she said she never thought of her during recording the song but when they started rolling on that shot of just her face he mother came into her mind and the whole time during the filming she was fighting tears and just trying not to bawl but one single tear did escape
