Prince wrote this, but it’s always been sinead’s song. Sadly, her politics pissed people off, and she dropped out for awhile. This song will always be one of the best songs ever!❤
Her ripping up a picture of the Pope on SNL was legendary.
Looking back now, she was so right, but boy was that a big deal back then.
I wouldn't say politics, she was molested and abused by members of the catholic church and she called them out publicly. the catholic church covered it up and destroyed her

As other comments have said, Prince wrote this song including the line "all of the flowers that you planted Mama". Sinead's mother had died in a car crash a couple of years earlier, and even tho her mom was terribly abusive, Sinead still missed and loved her. Thats why she got so emotional and the tears started flowing. Her beloved son Shane died at the age of 17 by suicide in 2022. It was more than Sinead could bear and she became a recluse. She died July 26th, also a probable suicide. Her voice that speaks to the heart has been silenced and her eyes that looked into the soul have been closed forever. I hope that she is with her son and they have both found the peace that they couldnt find here. RIP

When this video came out on MTV you couldn’t look away. You were locked in her gaze for 4 minutes or whatever. I remember this was one of the first female stars to have a shaved head (Grace Jones would be the other I can think of) and it was kinda shocking how beautiful she was.
I had a huge crush on her as a teenager. Shaved head and all.
A women I knew who was a poet said, "The only thing truly shocking is beauty."
So wish this beautiful soul got help before she passed. World -Class artist deserved more recognition. Thank you for appreciating her remarkable ability to touch our hearts.❤🎵🎶🙏
Prince wrote this song in 1984. Sinead O’Connor did this cover version in 1990. It went to no.1 in the UK charts and no.1 in 17 other countries. She tweaked the script slightly to make it a female version. The part she had tears in (All the flowers that you planted, Mama, in the backyard….) was when she was thinking about her mum in that moment, who died in a car crash in 1985. Three weeks before that accident, Sinead wanted to forgive her Mum for all the abuse she gave her. She had a very difficult life with her mum, and wanted to forgive her, but it was too late. All the other lyrics in this song (written by Prince) wasn’t about her life. She chose this song because she loved it herself.

I remember being young, probably your age, and having the same reaction. Prince wrote this but she owned it. I'm a serious Prince fan but she brought his beautiful lyrics to freaking life. Her name is pronounced Sha-naid. She's from Ireland. Her and Dolores O'Riordan from The Cranberries are phenomenal singers. I'm mainly Irish from 🇺🇸 and not being biased. They are both surreal vocalists.

I hit play and my wife was all the way across the room, after the second note she realized what it was and had a big ole smile on her face! This was big, big back in the day! Prince was such a great songwriter and in my opinion terribly underrated as a guitar player! Sinead (pronounced Shin-Aid) did a great job vocally!

I remember when this video first came out back in the day. It was a Saturday that I saw it and I was sitting at home watching MTV because that’s what we did back in the day and I saw her for the first time and I was like oh my god what a beautiful woman her beauty was breathtaking! And then she’s singing the song which obviously is a Prince song and I was obsessed with prince back in the day! I just fell in love with the song out of the gate, and have loved it ever since. There’s a lot of really great songs out there from every decade, but this is one of those songs that is so impactful and just one of the greatest songs ever and for me, this is one of them. By the way, this video was a big deal back in the day because having just a black screen and her beautiful face singing, it made such an impact on the song do you know what I’m saying?
She ruined her career when she ripped up a picture of the pope on SNL. The crazy part is her reasoning for doing it ultimately was true! I have nothing but admiration for this woman! She didn't back down for what she believed and was basically crucified for it and has never recovered. I hope someday that shes able to fight away her demons!
