How did I miss that? I had no idea she passed. RIP. This is one of my childhood songs. I remember riding around in a jeep at night with the windows down and this blasting. I was to young to know the full meaning of this song but it always made me emotional. One of the best songs ever. 💖

It may sound crazy, but I envy all those who are about to listen to this song and watch its video for the first time. It’s been 33 years since I first did it and it still makes me cry with her. Hope she’s finally in peace. RIP Sinéad, we will always love you.

Ditto! and I’m a 50 year old man this year! My friends would all make fun of me and say why you listening to this song. They just didn’t get it. I was filled with feelings of rejection way back then way before I ever got dumped by the first girl I ever loved. I was crushed. I’m ok now practically 35 yrs later. But when I hear this I still cry? Also( just like you said it would be) from lion and the cobra album was on continuous loop as well. Wow time flies and some things just stick with you!

I'm sorry you just learned about her...... 2 years ago. She was phenomenal... and I am so heartbroken over her death. Her 1990 album saved my life. It was all I had trying to survive a dangerous abusive relationship. Sinead O'Connor has every experience in her album. In this song she is talking about her mother being dead but it can also relate to any kind of break up. This song is a tribute to her mother though. My mother also died when I was only 6 so this song blew my mind.

This is the original version, recorded even before Prince (the writer) did a live performance. Sinead's version is the best version BY FAR!!! I can't listen to any other version. This version spent 4 weeks at #1 in the USA in 1990, in a time when it was rare for a song to spend that long at #1. It was a smash!
Prince recorded this I think in 1983. It's on his originals album that was released a couple years ago. Also a group he put together back then called the family released it on an album in the 80s.

Dude Prince recorded every single song he wrote, the song was recorded by him in 1983, out on bootlegs for years and then recorded by Prince's own side project The Family in 1985, years before the Sinead O' Connor version. If you don't know facts, please don't lie. BTW Prince was nominated for Best Song of the Year at the Grammys.

Prince originally wrote the song and made a rough demo, but gave it to one of his protege bands (The Family) to record for their album. A few years later Sinead recorded this version, which is probably the best known by everyone. So, there are atleast 4 or 5 different versions of this song in existance.

Most people have never felt this song. Some because they haven't been so in love that they would happily tear out their beating heart to give to another. Others are still with someone for whom they feel this way. But for those who've been there, had it, and lost it... I'm sorry. I have felt that pain myself, in ways I cannot even begin to describe. Hang in there. I can't guarantee it will get better, but if you don't stick around to find out, it never can.
