  • This week we learn about predator hunting with thermal equipment. Two excellent Louisiana outfitters who specialize in hunting pigs and coyotes with thermals at night join us to explain just how it’s done. It’s a fascinating discussion and we all learned that we all want to experience this unique hunt. We know first-hand how devastating pigs can be to a property, but these guys have found a way to keep the pressure on them and help their local farmers AND have FUN! If you have feral pigs in your area, there may be local farmers that would welcome you to help reduce their numbers. The trappers are using thermals and suppressors to clean up the pigs they can get in traps. We aren’t glorifying pig hunting, but pointing out a way to help put the pressure on these destructive vermin. We also learn what a Rougarou is and how did we miss that? Listen, Learn and Enjoy.

Thanks for the podcast. Very informative and my biggest piece of advice is to save-up for that thermal purchase whether it takes you months or years. If you skimp, you will regret buying a cheap thermal. I have called in coyotes, bobcats, shot skunks, racoons, armadillos and gives you a gauge on looking at the wildlife when they would normally have the advantage. I have taken people that don't have thermals and allowed to shoot mine but don't advise doing that as missing, misjudging distance, or muzzle discipline is a challenge. Missing a kill only educates the wildlife.

With the high humidity can you tell the difference between a bear and a large hog?

I have owned an ATN Thor 4, 640, 4-40 zoom for 2 years and question is subjective. In optimal conditions, yes. Differentiating between a hog and bear is easy but high humidity, what thermal you are using affects the quality of your picture. Humidity changes the quality.
