As someone who just started learning to paint correctly, seeing your ten-year progress including mistakes and lessons learned keeps me from getting discouraged with my current amateur attempts. Thanks.
I've been painting for 20 years and I can safely say do this and make sure you keep your older models. In five years time you can compare and it will really boost your confidence, hell even in a year you'll learn so much!
Absolutely stunning! Would love to see an updated How-To video for the Templars! The bolters look great, the armor looks great, the shoulders look great, it's all great! Well done Jay!
Loving the development in style, although the lenses in the 2020 model are fantastic. You've tied them into the base perfectly with pigments, also the yellow gun is spot on, as are the other colour choices esp heraldry. My only critique would be the damage is too random (and evenly spread), coming from tank armour modlers, it looks best when 'randomly' added to specific places where it tells a story. Sort of like wear on the tank steps or where people stand to get in, longwise scratches where it scraped against something. Not of the skill on space marines to do it, but could be sort of scratches on the knee's when they slid for cover, the edges of the plates where they collide etc, the legs would have more damage at the bottom, where the stones he's kicked up running have hit the grieves and damaged the boots etc. Oddly I find visually telling the story is the best part of the modeling and diorama making.
10 years of improving painting skills. The last iteration looks fantastic and it is worth re-painting old minis... I did the same for my eldar some year after and it is good to have stuff look homogenous, even if the sclupt of the minis look very different.
my wife and I started new armies together this week (i said pick any model and ima make it into an army) and I am so proud of them for choosing Grimaldus and Black Templars. They're building and painting Hivefleet Behemoth and now for the first time ever this hobby has become romantic! I will (lovingly) purge the xenos
You need to do a step by step BT paint video. I am a huge BT fan and love, love, looove the way you paint your teams. or is there a video out there already?
Jay dude, love your videos. Give us a treat mate and show us how you light and film your rotating minis. They always look so good and I know there are plenty of us that want to know the secret of how to show off minis like you do. Keep upthe good work, always look forward to your vids. 😊
Your progress through the ages is inspiring. I went from Blood Angels, to Space Sharks, then the Knights of Blood to Imperial Fist. Only now after doing this for four years that I am getting the hang of using transfer sheets & battle damage. Thanks for your inspiration and style. Going to try a Black Templar color scheme in the future for sure!
You are the Emperor's Champion of Black Templars. Previously used the contrast paint method you made when your last video about painting Black Templars came out. I'm gonna do this to my Leviathan Box now. XD
Hi Jay, big fan here. I discovered your channel while starting with 40k 1 year ago, you teached me so much it feels kinda weird to give you a suggestion for the color scheme ahaha still here I go I agree the primaris are a little too grey, it was one of the rare times the final result didn't convince me (I remember at the end of the video you tried to be content with it and I hoped you would decide to touch them again :D) I still kinda suck at painting so I use contrast paints to do much of the job, and focus on smaller parts to learn techniques - I found out to me the best way to paint round surfaces like IG armour, is to dilute it a lot and passing more coats, typically it's 1:2 dilution with contrast medium and 3 coats. I think it would work wonders for you too; one of the things I like more about this way is, if you want to increase contrast (or to keep the highlights since you already did them) you can do some coats focusing on the bottom half, the paint is so thin and 'contrasty' it doesn't leave a line. In your case you could do a test with a thinner 1:3 dilution of BT black, and just 2 coats one halfway and one 3/4? I know it sounds like a lot of work, but for me it actually turned out not so bad, because of the thinner paint I stress a lot less about mistakes and go faster another big plus for me is since it's so thin, it makes it easy to try a little glaze in one of the coats. As an example, I like Militarum Green more than Creed Camo, but the latter makes for a very rich shadow so I mix a little in my lower coats, just keep in mind since you are adding another paint you must also increase medium to keep the coat thin - so for me the mix is 1 MG + 2 medium (one part paints to 2 parts medium) whole surface 2 Militarum Green +1 Creed Camo + 6 medium (which is the same dilution) whole surface 2 MG +1 CC + 6 medium again 3/4 height or so The reason of the order is to use pure MG first, as not to cover the CC shadow, if you use one color you can start from top or bottom doesn't matter
You are going to repaint all your old figures? I have Old Minis that I refer to at 2nd Company and newer figures I refer to as 1st Company. It's weird to name the newer ones as 1st, but they look better and I used them more.
Great video and I needed to see this. I went all in on the Black Templars box and range refresh and almost immediately decided I like 30k better lol so all these minis are still in box. I'm getting close to finishing my SOH and NL 30k Armies so this video has renewed my "faith" in busting out my Templar army next and getting it done. I really like the yellow on the bolters.
This is making me super proud. I kitbashed some Intercessors the other day, and every model is absolutely unique. My Tactical squad needs a bit of work for uniqueness but the whole army is really unique so I guess I did it right!
Thanks for sharing your journey. My blood angel army is not nearly as old as your black templars but it’s interesting to see how they changed over the years.
I love your channel, and watch your videos every morning. I've actually started a black Templar army (though I paint mine to look like cops). Hope you stay on RUclips a long long time
The paint scheme of these BT's are INCREDIBLE holy CRAP!!! I'm super new to the hobby, but your gun colour and especially the templar symbol on the helmet is amazing and very inspiring Would that symbol be free handed or is there a way to do it if you're not that good a artist?
Nice painting evolution! Is there a tutorial for your latest contract paint version? I can only find the Tacticool Black Templar video with oil paints. Thx and keep up the good work ;)
Looking forward to watching this one. |I've been struggling with coming up with a black armour scheme that I like. I'm almost about to just try and do the triple edge highlights version, that GW does for their BT's now. It does look tidy and will get me some practice at edge highlighting. I tried doing a volumetric version, but it ended up looking too blue. Black armour is certainly difficult.
Personally.. I sort of like the painting on your "original" Primaris better, but you nailed the Blanche style with your newer Primaris. Great paintjobs either way, love to see it. Crusade on!
I'm always going to be more of a fan of the first born. That's just what I have associated with the word Space Marine in my head. Really fun video, cool to see how you've added to your skills over the years.
Hey Eons, I'm just breaking into 40K, and practising painting a few styles of Black Templar space marines to decide which I want to use on my actual. What ratio of Leviadon Blue/Black Templar do you use?
kind of a thread necro here but I wanted to ask you how you handle your Neophytes given they aren't like all armor i find it difficult to solve the problem via zenithal -> contrast
Where do yall get the chained weapon/hands for black templars? I see the Crusader squads have them, but if i were to buy a standard intercessor box, how would I go about getting the chained hands/weapons for them
Brother, we need to talk! I've been "collecting" Black Templar since they got their own codex in the 5th edition before that I ONLY played the FIRST company of Blood Angels with all figures in "Epic style" in 40k scale with friends in basketball gyms because the then custom made titans were up to 6'4" tall. To move the figures we used shuffleboard poles ..... thats over 25 years ago
have you done a black templars painting video? im curious cuz im starting with salamanders, and most of the tutorials ive seen use edge higlighting, but gdam I suck at it
I'll say it. I too love Primaris. I've always loved them. I thought the lore is cool. The look is cool. Everything about them is cool and is a neat step forward.
I love the idea of taking the Old Squat Models TM and painting them with honours distinctions or something as an-joke, like "Oh yeah, that's Sarge, from the Old Times, he probably has more hours in battle than you've been alive tough guy."
hey Jay, i know you uploaded alot of videos where you painted up your BT's but is there a one that is the "definitive" way of painting them? i want to steal your recipe for black

Keep painting friend! I bet your painted models look way better than unpainted minis do.
I've been painting for 20 years and I can safely say do this and make sure you keep your older models. In five years time you can compare and it will really boost your confidence, hell even in a year you'll learn so much!
Please do a tutorial video on your most recent BTs, they look gorgeous and I'd love to have my Leviathan box painted as them!
Those ones were painted up in a video. Can't remember what it is called, but it's out there.
@@JasonM69 oh shoot, gonna go look for it then, thanks for the tip!
@@SamsButterscotchhey mate, did you have luck finding that video? Because all I could find was an old one using a black oil wash.
I´d start an BT army if you´d share your recipe for your dudes!
Also: Please include how you do those awesome bases (:
@SamsButterscotch ”the secret to perfect 40k heroes” and his “10 models in 8hours” videos. Both show them
Just as I sit down to paint my new Marshal, The Emperor has smiled on me

Those last bois look incredible! How about a tutorial?
Keep up the awesome work, man. You’re my favorite 40k channel out here.
What a cool story, it's awesome seeing the development in the scheme and techniques
It will be awesome video repainting them and showing whole process
Dude, that last set actually has me wanting to paint BTs now. Beautifully done.
my wife and I started new armies together this week (i said pick any model and ima make it into an army) and I am so proud of them for choosing Grimaldus and Black Templars. They're building and painting Hivefleet Behemoth and now for the first time ever this hobby has become romantic! I will (lovingly) purge the xenos
Most honest minis I seen for a long time. Thankyou. It encourages me.
Really loved this video, your enthusiasm is so infectious and fun. Keep the passion, it's a rare thing to have for so long. Thanks for the content.
Videos like this make us love this hobby. Thanks for sharing!
Your grey templars look great Jay 😂

11:38 I really hope you meant the Mark IV "Maximus" Pattern Helmet.
You can be happy. They are really great. Thanks for the video, I’m inspired for my own Deathwatch.
Do you brush the Black Templar paint on or airbrush? Would love to see a full tutorial on these

It’s worth it. Your BT are the best I’ve seen. I love weapons being a striking color. I did yellow for my world eaters. And red for my fallen.
This is making me super proud. I kitbashed some Intercessors the other day, and every model is absolutely unique. My Tactical squad needs a bit of work for uniqueness but the whole army is really unique so I guess I did it right!
The highlight of my monday is waking up to your videos being just posted :)
I am amazed at your progress in miniature painting!

You’ve inspired me to start a dark angels army
Will you be uploading a video of your current Black Templar painting scheme? :)
Your shoulder pads on your first marines are awesome they look like parchment paper 100% gonna steal it 😂❤
Just like me, i never seen someone so happy and excited with their army, this is one of the best parts of the hobby.
Honestly as a fan of avoiding edge highlighting I enjoy hearing someone else say that and making awesome look models!
The paint scheme of these BT's are INCREDIBLE holy CRAP!!!

Abbadon black, agrax earth shade.

They look totally Awesome!!! ❤
I'm new to the bobby myself and it's always nice to hear such interesting stories.
Could you please post a tutorial video of your current templars with recipes etc?
Great army showcase! Hope one day my Black Templars look that good
This is amazing, and it makes for a great army to have slightly differently painted units, each one with its history
Hi! Which colours or pigments did you use for basing your actual black templars? thanks in advance
Black armour is certainly difficult.
this video is realy relatable cause my first black templars from like 2 years ago are just black primer with chunky white sholder pads
Personally.. I sort of like the painting on your "original" Primaris better, but you nailed the Blanche style with your newer Primaris. Great paintjobs either way, love to see it. Crusade on!
I really like the brown shoulder plate.

Love the skulls!! where did you get it??
Those green purity seals look nice
Hey Eons, I'm just breaking into 40K, and practising painting a few styles of Black Templar space marines to decide which I want to use on my actual. What ratio of Leviadon Blue/Black Templar do you use?
Drink a shot everytime he says black Templar
Fantastic video mate
Can’t wait to see the new improved army when it’s done!
Jay have you gotten down your SpeedPaint replacement for contrast
Damn, I guess I’ll be buying some leviathan blue and black Templar contrast paint. Because those marines look amazing.
At 7:43 did you trim the neck for the Helment swap
kind of a thread necro here but I wanted to ask you how you handle your Neophytes given they aren't like all armor i find it difficult to solve the problem via zenithal -> contrast

Brother, we need to talk!
I've been "collecting" Black Templar since they got their own codex in the 5th edition
before that I ONLY played the FIRST company of Blood Angels with all figures in "Epic style" in 40k scale with friends in basketball gyms because the then custom made titans were up to 6'4" tall. To move the figures we used shuffleboard poles .....
thats over 25 years ago
have you done a black templars painting video? im curious cuz im starting with salamanders, and most of the tutorials ive seen use edge higlighting, but gdam I suck at it
I'm looking to paint all my Marines as Raven Guard and I plan on trying your black armor recipe now
I'll say it. I too love Primaris. I've always loved them. I thought the lore is cool. The look is cool. Everything about them is cool and is a neat step forward.
Where did you get the actual skulls for the top of their backpacks? I need skulls for my chapter. Lots of them. Lol
Looks very Blanchett artwork. Great job
Those look epic!
The one with the cross on his helmet reminds me a lot of the disturbing comic series “crossed”
I really like the brown shoulderpads. Looks very John Blanche
inspiring love story of a man and his toys
2020 is definitely my fav
Do a video painting all the space marine factions in your scheme! Love to see imperial fists and Salamanders get some love!
I like your very first scheme a lot.
hahaha those initial tactical marines fro 10 years ago look pretty good XD.
Maybe I should be more critical with my own painting?
I love the idea of taking the Old Squat Models TM and painting them with honours distinctions or something as an-joke, like "Oh yeah, that's Sarge, from the Old Times, he probably has more hours in battle than you've been alive tough guy."
Jay what’s the exact scheme tho? Black templar contrast mixed with Leviadon Blue over a Zenithal? What ratio? And what other paints?
Question: You dont do any highlight at all or you do little edgehighlights?
Funny how shortly after this video the Warhammer channel dropped their tutorial to paint Black Templar termies from the Levianthan box.
As always, just one black templar!
Ten years on, still doesn’t know the name of the chapter. Love these guys though! Keep up the good work, Jay!
do you have a tutorial of how you did those black templars at the end im new to painting with a shaky hand lol
Du var i Slovenien när den videon kom ut och du gick på torget när du lyssnade på det här.
I would like to see your take on the Black Templar Castellan based on the 3rd ed 40K box cover.
Now we wanna see some yellow, red and white Black Templar
That thumbnail 🔥
I think I need to paint a black templar now.
Wow! Would love a tutorial on how you paint them
You should maybe make a complete tutorial how you paint them now =)
Loved watching this, I still can't settle on a way to do my black armour 😢
I want to see you working on freehanding when the 10th edition tactical marines come out.
hey Jay, i know you uploaded alot of videos where you painted up your BT's but is there a one that is the "definitive" way of painting them? i want to steal your recipe for black
Nice Fukuyama-Warhammer crossover in the EoB lore. :)
Where do you get your nameplates? I'm trying to make my named successor salamanders stick out
Make sure to put this squad into a possible golden deaaaaaaamon
