- Plane bodies made by Boeing's largest supplier regularly left the factory with serious defects, according to a former quality inspector at the firm.
Santiago Paredes who worked for Spirit AeroSystems in Kansas, told the BBC he often found up to 200 defects on parts being readied for shipping to Boeing.
Spirit AeroSystems and Boeing have both come under intense scrutiny after an unused door came off a brand new 737 Max shortly after take-off in January, leaving a gaping hole in the side of the plane.
Pete Buttigieg, United States Secretary of Transportation, says “if a plane isn’t safe, it can’t fly”.

DW years ago had a thorough investigation where they clarified methods of hiring drug addicts into assembly lines etc or firing of real engineers who built up the old versions.

@@Jase29The thing is, the BBC isn't hyping it up for nefarious purposes, they are reporting on it because the general public wants to know, which is in turn because confidence of the general and flying publics in Boeing aircraft has decreased. Public perception is ultimately a problem Boeing needs to fix, after it's fixed the physical problems, and the company processes & culture, because it ultimately affects sales.
What about the two separate whistleblowers discovered dead after coming forward with information???

First of all, they were from Spirit.
Second, a quality manager or inspector is not the field expert or specialist.
The manager or even engineers disagree amongst themselves however senior engineers understand if there is a safety of flight, use as is or notice of escape. Each have a level of degree of and when actions are required to check or replace.

Global aviation was a lot less safe when Russia and China were still trying to manufacture aircraft. This latest wave of ‘issues’ is just more media hysteria, capitalizing on public interest in turmoil at Boeing. An airbus just had the exact same problem with its front landing gear at LAX a few days ago.

Dude, the Fedex plane that had the malfunctioning landing gear and had to land on its nose was a Boeing 767-300 and it was around 10 years old! Are you implying that a 10 year old Boeing plane can't be expected to have functioning landing gear?! This is getting ridiculous.
After some time, excluding known design/production issues that would manifest themselves in other units of the same type, these kinds of incidents are caused by poor maintenance or just plain old equipment failure. That landing gear that collapsed possibly had thousands of cycles and was serviced by tens of maintenance personnel. You can blame Boeing for a new plane’s door panel that blew out mid flight, for example.

blame Boeing or any other manufacturer for something tyre burst, could happen to any plane out there. Same goes for older planes where some of the MRO's need to take a long hard look at themselves.

Btw., Boeing creates the maintainance instructions for their planes. If a plane is maintained according to Boeing's instructions and there is still a technical issue because of lack of quality of the product then you think that's not a Boeing issue?

Competition is always best. Airbus is made by humans too. I don’t mean to excuse Boeing, how in the world do you have a door plug fall off?! I do recall the upright tail fell off an Airbus just after 9/11, it crashed in the Rockaway neighborhood in NY. You always have to watch out for humans, they do great things and stupid things! Who knows the stories we haven’t heard.
While the MCAS crashes and door plug blow-out were issues very much attributable to Boeing, a plane running off the end of a runway or bursting a tyre on landing is more likely to do with maintenance or aircraft operation. The number of unrelated incidents happening to Boeing aircraft within 24 hours is related to just how many flights take place today. Let us wait until accident investigations or completed before reaching the prejudicial conclusion that these are yet further Boeing safety issues.
So what was the cause of the Fedex plane's landing gear not working and the plane having to land on its nose? The plane was only 10 years old. And have we already forgotten about the Boeing that went into a nosedive a couple of weeks ago, injuring dozens of passengers because of a faulty pilot seat that is in all of those planes? Boeing was responsible for testing those seats before, during and after they put them into their planes.

Er, yes, if the automaker but faulty tires on the car then yes, you can blame the automaker. If the tire burst because YOU didn't maintain them/your car properly then its not the fault of the carmaker. Boeing is responsible for every single part they put on their planes. They need to test and check them before, during and after they put them into their planes. Is it likely that this bursting tire was Boeing's fault? Probably not? Could the malfunctioning landing gear of the 10 year old Fedex Boeing 767-300 plane that had to land on its nose be Boeing's fault. It's could. That remains to be seen.
But the FAA let them self regulate and as always the whistle-blower life is destroyed for having the courage to come foward
FAA will obviously always give Boieng a pass, Its American and they'll cut corners all they can to at least compete.

The transport secretary just stated they were already under a microscope when all these recent accidents have happened. They clearly have no control over the situation considering Boeing is a defence contractor.

Not trying to defend Boeing here but these incidents listed in the video are hardly related to the manufacturing shortcuts on the 737 MAX and the 787.

@@phantagirlable I completely agree but there have already been hundreds of maintenance checks and replaced parts on that aircraft since it was delivered. We just can't know the issue for sure until they've thoroughly investigated, which I'm sure they will.
I'm just saying the gross negligence in safety standards seems to be a rather new phenomenon that older types don't seem to suffer from.
I feel very safe flying on all Boeing aircraft except the 737 MAX (which I don't plan to ever fly on) and to a lesser extent the 787. Apart from that, it's mostly the carrier, whose safety culture in maintenance and piloting makes the difference.

lol Okay, first of all, Boeing assembles the planes and has to test all materials and make sure they are in accordance with safety quality control. They need to test and check and double check before, during and after assembly. A bad tire can be because of bad maintainance from the airline or because Boeing put a bad tire on the plane. Same goes for every single component of a Boeing plane. I mean dude, did you seriously believe that Boeing can just slap a, say, faulty engine on their planes and then be like, ops, not our fault that the plane crashed? XD

The Alaska Airlines door plug incident involved a new airplane. The incident in Turkey was a blown tire. Boeing does not make tires. As far as I know airlines either maintain their own planes or contract it out. The plane in Senegal was an old 737 cause of incident under investigation. Many African airlines use older planes and maintenance can be an issue. Some are banned from flying outside Africa. I think Boeing is trying to right the ship. Everything that happens to a Boeing plane is not their fault.

Are you even fact checking yourselves? Spirit is a wholly separate, independent company. Spirit also makes Airbus parts. Spirit used to be a part of Boeing, but was spun off into an independent entity.

In all fairness it’s not just Boeing, the main cause of these crashes are the airlines principal maintenance departments who fail to maintain, report and disclose these issues
I get the Max and 787 issues since they are new planes. But a 737-800 is nearly a 30 year old planes and so many hours and flights everyday, around the world. isn't this more of a maintenance issue with the airliner than it is with the manufacture?

Working in the industry, if one fastener is over or under torqued due to an incorrect process, there is a full investigation performed.

Isn't the safety record based on incident to flight hours? Most of a flight is at cruising. Would be interesting to compare that record with only the take-off and landing hours.
Remember, they are probably both due to the lack of proper maintenance from the airlines part.
Just to reiterate what a lot of people are saying here - aircraft which have been in service for a longer period of time experiencing landing gear failures really shouldn’t be mixed in with whistleblowing for a currently produced design. That’s a ridiculous generalisation. The decade old 767 and the 737 will have had many inspections and maintenance checks from the airline’s engineers or from their contracted engineering company. The responsibility isn’t all on Boeing for events like these - it’s the airlines and their engineers too. This report doesn’t tell the full story.

Safety first
The way reporters conduct interviews regarding aviation safety is borderline annoying to stupid. Peter Butigieg is secretary of transportation, he is not Boeing, he is not FAA, nor he is NTSB. What he must answer for, is that he is following political and social duties of holding accountable all the aforementioned entities to do their jobs seriously, Boeing to comply with safety standards, the FAA to oversee them, and the NTSB to investigate.
He does not have a crystal ball to know wether Boeing will comply or not. All he can say is that he will ground their planes per rule of law if they don't. That stupid attitude of being overly inquisitive and presumptuous with every interviewee no matter their role just add white noise to the matter.
Well, Pete here is definitely doing some damage control for Boeing here.
Spirit is a supplier for Boeing (and Airbus, others) not a subsidiary. The physical plant and much of the contacted work was once part of Boeing over 20 years ago, and likely will be again in a year or two, but not now.

I’m a little confused here, the 737-300, 737-800, and 767 are all old planes which are no longer in production. They’re not really relevant to the current problems the company is causing.

I think such safety checks should already be done for every aircraft manufacturer before they start production. This could have been avoided if such checks were down by government organisations before Boeing starts shipping their aircrafts
The FedEx incident has nothing to do with being. That plane is a 767, very old and hasn't been in production for years. A plane designed and manufactured before the Boeing/Mcdonnel D merger. That incident is a pilot or FedEx maintenance issue.

I still don't understand why Alaska Airlines gets a pass on the door plug blowout. There were 3 separate incidents where the pressurization alerts went off in the cockpit and AA didn't ground the plane to check it out. Just say Boeing and the bell rings .

Well a lot of this could also be maintenance related. Doesn't generally have to be Boeing. The Alaska one is Boeing fault or technically Spirit. But fault with tires/gear isn't abnormal. Nor is runway excursion. Runway excursion is most likely caused by pilot error and poor SOP
I mean the 737-300 is probably about 35 years old, built way before the MDD merger in 1997 which was when things started going downhill…this was likely an operational failure

I fail to see how an old -300 in Senegal of all places, not a location knows for its fastidious aviation safety record, has anything to do with current quality and safety issues at Boeing. And the 76 nosegear event hasn't even been fully investigated yet, this is just poor journalism, or a lack thereof, which in and of itself is no surprise these days.
These are maintenance problems and not Boeing problems. It's like blaming BMW for a flat tire 10 years after driving it off the lot.

runway overruns are not hugely uncommon, there are hundreds of different variables involved in the land/go-around decision, and sometimes pilots get it wrong, sometimes they are misinformed and sometimes their aircraft does not perform as expected, but the implication that a tyre burst followed by a runway excursion is somehow Boeing's fault is somewhat hard to swallow. There is a very legitimate story here, it probably has nothing to do with that excursion, and winding the two stories together feels a bit too sensational to me

There’s a 1 in 10,000 chance of a tyre blowing during takeoff, many issues are down to poor maintenance of the airlines or local mechanics.

I like Pete, but the whole thing where the FAA allowed Boeing to conduct their own frickin inspections was imo a serious mistake. I realize people will say, it was just small stuff like bathroom signs etc…, but I guarantee that it went far beyond that.
