Inspired by you, today I fixed myself my own TV that broke down a few days ago. A single diode (few cents) failed and brought everything down. Thanks for always guiding us through your videos!
Although it seems to hurt your ego its nice to see that you take suggestions from your viewers seriously, and no my comment isn't related to this video
I enjoy watching your videos. I am not a repair person; I just get a kick out of watching. I suspect brain surgeons are jealous of how steady your hands are! I've seen some of these mother boards and I cannot grasp how you are able to solder such tiny components. Your dry humor gets me laughing out loud! Thanks for sharing your videos.
Alex is the best. I've tried to watch other technicians and I can't stand their constant rambling. They spend way too much time talking instead of showing the troubleshooting process. I don't see how they make any money.
I like the way you tell about the board and explain so much as you repair it. As a noob I can understand you and it is fascinating to watch your videos. The microscope is brutal xD
I wonder what the long-term prognosis would be for a board that had that amount of corrosion, would it last, would it be stable, would some components be slowly internally corroding, it'd be interesting to see it's overall lifespan now....great work and good humour as always Alex !!! 😎👍
I tried to repair a laptop from the previous owner who had chicken soup all over the laptop. I replaced the laptop and tried to get it working again. I've disassembled, cleaned and reassembled it 5 times, the last time I've soaked it under water and dried it in the oven at 70⁰C for 3 hours. After all that it still wouldn't turn on but the power led flashed 10x, it didn't do that before. I replaced the battery and it turned on! I use it as a cnc control laptop in the shed where humidity can be quite high but it works still after 3 years. It took me days to repair it so Northridgefix would deem it a no fix for sure. But as a hobby it was 8nteresting to do and it paid off in the end.
the oxide between components could introduce several problems; resistance, rectification(acts as diode; old diodes were called metal oxide diodes/rectifier), I think it might even turn to metal oxide transistor say if oxide is between 3 components. But oxide effects only external connector connections nut the inside of basic/discrete components.
Just awesome my friend!!! I was expecting for you to whip out a board view and test components but your method was much faster. Thanks for taking the time to make these videos.
thank you for videos I managed to fix my 5 year old wireless mouse by seeing how simple sometimes problems are. It was just dirty and I used your videos to learn how to clean it and what to look for! have a wonderfull day!
Looking at engineering videos is more interesting than looking at videos on nail polishing. Engineering videos also include fashion, pattern making and sewing a 2 dimensional piece of fabric into a 3 dimensional fitting wardrobe.
You have right, its my hobby i already have some tools,i got also a hdmi microscope and i repaired laptops and phones ...i miss a thermal imaging camera but its not big deal to repair old school
Alex ,you are so right about LEARNING new things. It's FUN.I just mess around fixing computers.but i have a collection of microscopes from 1910 -2020.i have 23 so far.You know that in those they haven't changed much? But now with the CCD ones i believe those will change a lot,it's not as much about glass as it is computing and manipulating the image.GREAT things to come.thank you
Alex good work there, thanks for sharing. Please add PLAYLIST, & sort this for instance under spills fix. this way it be easier for people to use it as guide
That was sweet! Big Boss is a man of few words! Oh if only my ex had been likewise! Especially after she ran off with a waiter in tight trousers and took my goldfish Tish and Tosh, and my faithful dog Boo with her! I loved that dog! I'm now looking for a female version of Big Boss. A Japanese nun, perhaps. Please advise Alex. Loved the video.
You should watch more board repair vids. Temps don’t always really matter because it is mostly about technique. I’m almost always max temp unless I’m in a sensitive situation but it’s all about how far you are from the board and technique. But air flow definitely matters but still can be subjective based on technique. Good luck!
Hi! I'm watching your repair videos so I can learn more, also my kids is going to university next year and is interested in doing repair like this, motherboards, gpu, phones, etc. Can you make a video about what career and pathway you choose to learn all of this? Computer Engineer? or What? We are from Puerto Rico and I
I have a MacBook Air with a similar problem. I reflowed it everything worked great but after the os was updated it went to sleep and now won’t wake up. Any suggestions
I have the same issue and I went to Apple to fix it. The price they told me is numerous. Is there a chance I can get contact with you and see if we could fix it? Thank you
So a dumb question. There seem to be a lot of water or liquid damage cases. Why doesn’t Apple and others make laptops more liquid-resistant? Like a 5 cent rubber membrane under the keyboard area? Ten cents of clear spray over the pc board? This sounds doable. Why doesn’t it happen?
No idea how you and the 16 that upvoted you are so impatient. It was a fix and he cleaned many areas using that method. My suggestion is you watch the video to the end before commenting
My urge would've have been to clean all with IA also, then remove the heat sink to get a peek under it and clean, and remove at least that one chip to see under it and clean. Then reflow. Then reinstall the chip(s) and heat sink. You know how long that would take? Big Boss is the Boss of all Bosses yes, but Alex is the King of Efficiency and knows how to get 'em in and get 'em out. Good job!
I wouldn’t trust that repair I’m afraid as there could be more corrosion building , unless you put it in ultrasonic cleaner without us seeing , seems the perfect t candidate for a clean and reflow. Even distilled vinegar would have neutralised the area and prevented further corrosion that perhaps is minute and under chips from coming back. Otherwise good repair as always. 👍
read any datasheet of surface mount IC or component like resistor or cap the reflow (heat) is 200~250'C, and the exposure time is in seconds can remember how long exactly maybe 20 or 60 until the solder paste melts to hold the component But they do burn if the temp is too much & the exposure is too long Then this indirect heat flow does not provide full heat as in hot air gun say 500'C the heat on board maybe less like 250 or 300 see wikipedia for Heat transfer
Just wonder why you didn't clean it first with isoprophyl? I would reflow it after cleaning it with alcohol, but there are many ways to rome so...good work. Macbook is fixed and thats the result we wanna get. Great video. Greets
I was wondering the same thing. I've fixed maybe 10 different phones and laptops by cleaning with isopropyl alcohol. The ones that were successful had chocolate milk, fine dirt (dropped on driveway in the rain and left for hours), wine, soda, potato soup, beef barley soup (used water first then isopropyl for that one). I couldn't fix a laptop that had hot engine coolant spilled in it. Owner was looking at the manual to fix his car when he opened the hot radiator. The coolant actually dissolved some of the circuit traces! I also couldn't fix an iPhone found in a snow pile by the road after the plow went through. The salt from the road corroded the connectors and disintegrated the pins. And there was a Samsung Note 9 that went swimming in a lake and drowned. Lol. Under 6 feet or water for 2 hours and it was turned on. Two chips for the camera power supply were destroyed (there were pieces out if them). According to my brother who worked for Lucent some years ago, that's what happens if moisture gets into ICs. They tested the ones they made by exposing to high humidity to be sure moisture couldn't get in due to manufacturering defects. I really appreciate Alex's videos. Watched a bunch, ordered low melt solder, solder wick, and flux from Northridge Fix and replaced the HDMI IC in an LG TV where all HDMI ports stopped working. Couldn't have done that without watching Alex.
You do realize that saying makes no sense that way? It’s “when the going gets tough, the tough get going”. Also it’s a very disreputable saying as it’s associated with John Mitchell, the jailed Attorney General of Richard Nixon

BIG BOSS has a very hard job...i really admire his work.
Your banter always cracks me up.
We all appreciate the time you put into your videos sir. ❤❤❤.
You don't fix a lot of Mac books on the channel but I'm always inspired by your work . I watch your videos using different accounts
he did a lot of macbooks few years ago
Alex becouse of you i fixed my dead laptop you re big bossses of all bosses love you man thx
Although it seems to hurt your ego its nice to see that you take suggestions from your viewers seriously, and no my comment isn't related to this video
Fascinated by the way the flux removed the corrosion. Makes sense when you think about it,but I guess I never had!
Great job Alex!
It doesn't. It's now under the chips for sure.
if it works job is done.
@@MikeGervasi How would you suggest getting the corrosion out?

For sure Alex isn't drinking any alcohol; this one alone will make your nervous system more steady.
12:00 "Anything that big boss touches, works" 😁😁😁.
Great work as always. Takes a team. Learned alot about reflowing.
Love your humor - "Maybe I am one of those" :) - Merry XXXmas and happy new year

Like the shop next door , and they did not see it coming. 😂 I needed a good laugh
Flux is a kind of acid and combination with 500c hot air cleans corrosions easy.and reflow chips with touching.i respect your techniques

a short and dead board, 2k to replace from apple

@@imqqmi - Like a wine spill your initial fix is to pour tomato soup over laptop

Amazing! Good save.
Lol, at first I thought you decided to take on a TV with this thumbnail :D Another great repair, Alex. Keep up the great work. 💪
Im not sure if you have one, but if you got an ultrasonic cleaner , this would make your life alot easier

Everyone calls it corrosion, but I think calling it a mineral buildup is more accurate.
masterful repair

Hello Alex! Great video! Do you think training will likely happen next year? This knowledge is very useful for people who are interested in repairing!
Nice works congratulations 💖🙏
Do you know how much this would cost to get done?
What temps does he use for this reflow technique?

Computer engineering or electrical engineering but these days computer engineering is better
Please what’s the name of the liquid/paste you used before using the heat to clean the corrosion

I hope you pay Big Boss well. He sure is doing some tideous work.
I wonder if you first clean it with Alcohol first will it work or need reflow? Just ask nothig else.
We need to see big boss's skils
I spilt juice on my keyboard but when I check the crevices of it I saw dust and crumbs on all the keys does that mean my MacBook is ok
I'm happy that it's fixed but I would consider selling it.
The psychic next door going out of business did not see it coming. Good one 😂
I want to see more Big Boss cam!
I wonder why you didn't throw the motherboard in a ultrasonic cleaner to get rid of the corrosion and dirt and then reflow the chips?
Nice job master 😉💪
#NorthridgeFix. What are the parameters on your heat soldier when reflowing the chips???

Psychic shop didn't see it coming lol.
My suggestion is to Clean with isoprophyl alcohol and then nicely clean with fine brush to remove the oxidation , then reflow the chips
Pros just clean up once the job is done😂
Fix it. Invoice. Move on. Flux will get that done for you then clean the flux/dirt mix afterwards. No need.
