I think many people confuse "unearned" with "unsatisfying". Golden Frieza is the perfect example, because he literally trained for it, but suddenly seeing a Frieza who's now golden as a result of offscreen training, yeah, it felt very anticlimatic, which is exactly the problem people tend to have.

Forgot to mention Master Roshi somehow quietly increasing in power dramatically through "offscreen training" after living hundreds of years and not even getting to a point of being worth mentioning at the start of Z, to the point that he can suddenly hold his own next to the other human Z fighters in the ToP.

we definitely needed better explanations rather than just "training". Frieza is unsatisfying but whatever, he had a lot of room for story around him.
Can't quite do the same with the Z-fighters who spent decades each honing their skills. Goku/Vegeta can justify it by goig with Beerus/Whis, but everyone else needed *something*. Maybe Piccolo meets another universe's Namek that got to train for decades due to Frieza not invading. Gohan could have found some off screen masters like how Goku did when he learned Instant Transmission. IDK what you'd do with 17/18, but you can say some mixture of Bulma tech and traning for their biological sides can boost them up. Maybe a hot take, but maybe Roshi/Krillin/Tien could learn to wield and control God Ki to explain their power ups and train with that. Not like they using it for anyone else outside of explaining SSG.
As another hot take, I think it's fine to powercreep people for an arc when the story wants to focus on other characters. Sucks for fan favorites like Tien, but even a franchise as big as DB can only do so much in every arc.

@@raze2012_ it sucks cuz the way they go about making them stronger is to increase their raw power. Wish they did stuff like HxH where they refine their techniques and actual ki control. all DBZ and DBS does is try to push strength and their ability to survive explosions or tank a punch.

    • @davidharshman7645
      @davidharshman7645 4 месяца назад +21

I kinda disagree about Roshi. I liked the approach to him taken in Super.
      1) Roshi's character had always been about intelligent fighting and misdirection as much as strength. Half the point of the character is to demonstrate that power level measurements, punch measuring machines, and other "objective" power scaling comparisons are BS. It isn't about the power, it is about the application.
      2) Roshi at the beginning of DBZ wasn't at an irrelevant level of combat ability. He was retired. He was as capable as any of the human fighters that stood up against Nappa. He wasn't there because he was trusting the next generation to defend Earth.
      3) In the actual ToP, just about every fighter but Roshi was fighting an endurance battle trying to save energy for a 48 minute battle. But, Roshi wasn't. The was using his own life force in techniques that were as dangerous to himself as his opponents. If he hadn't been knocked out of the tourney, he would never have survived to the end, even if he won every fight. That level of "putting it all on the table" can make a lot of difference.

The problem is that all the "training" happens off screen. We're not given any information on what that training entails other than some vague notion of increasing one's power level. We also never get see the effort and the pay off afterwards. The problem isn't unearned powerups, the problem is that these powerups are poorly justified. And then the fact that these powerups often become worthless after the villain is defeated because the next villain is going to be too powerful for that power-up. So it often invalidates the the entire point of getting stronger because they'll never be strong enough for that strength to mean something narratively.

Yeah, the issue is narrative framing at the end of the day. You don't NEED every villian to be stronger, but the way DB does arcs makes it always need to one up itself.
One Punch Man is a perfect example on how to manage this. Saitama can beat anyone when he's there, but for various reasons he can't always be there. That's what lets other fighters shine, even if they aren't Saitama level. It is not earned because Nobody jut Gohan ever got rage boosts like that, not even Goku. Caring about one’s family has nothing to do with it, not everyone has that hidden potential inside them to unleash when enraged.
In Z, those rage boosts where a plot point for Gohan, a special attribute to him, it meant something. Now everyone and their mother gets a magical power boost just from being angry and it can be used to cheese any fight at any point if the plot so desires. Imagine Vegeta just obliterating Super Perfect Cell after getting in a enraged state after Trunks was killed. It was a meaningful moment for Vegeta and his character development, but that doesn’t mean he deserved a sudden power boost from nothing to defeat the enemy. It feels unearned, but it is still understandable. He is still by far the weakest member of the team, even though he is by far the most skilled. 20ish years of training to be the weakest member of the team demonstrates that most characters have limited potential relative to the heavy hitters, and Vegeta is openly worried about Roshi joining the team.

Personally I think that Gohan is the poster boy of unearned power ups. I don't have a problem with Gohan's power up in the Cell Saga since him having hidden potential was sorta the point of his character so I don't think there's an issue there. The problem starts in the Buu Saga where its established that Gohan has not only not been keeping up with his training but that he even became weaker than his kid self who fought Cell.
And the way they fixed his lack of power wasn't to have him go through an insane training to make up for lost time and to force him to realize his mistake and the importance of keeping up with his training, instead they just GAVE him a huge power up that literally only required him to sit on his ass to get it. Years later when Freeza came back Gohan was SOOO out of shape that he was struggling to fight off Freeza's MINIONS.
Later on Gohan did a bit of training with Piccolo and suddenly his power is on par with God Kii level fighters like Goku who HAS been training consistently for years. And now he gained another SSJ2 power up, how much did he train for that? Knowing Gohan's track record by this point I'm entirely convinced that he simply pulled a Goten and transformed completely by accident and just happened to get a new form...a form that Gohan should theoretically never have to turned into again since he has his Ultimate Form which should in theory be able to draw out all the power from that transformation without any drawbacks. The only way this new transformation can replace Ultimate is if it does everything the Ultimate form does but increases his power EVEN MORE than all his previous forms without any drawbacks.

    • @Sixgunharlequin
      @Sixgunharlequin Год назад +31

I think that's kinda the point of Gohan's character in general. He'll always have the highest potential, and with that the easiest power ups. It's his natural disposition that makes him get weaker and on par, and even subpar, compared to the others. It's two extremes to level out his character.

    • @richardsinclair7661
      @richardsinclair7661 Год назад +40

That's the entire point of Gohan's character. He could easily be the strongest character in the series, if he wanted to be. His potential and rate of growth has always been off-the-charts, even in comparison to other Saiyans. It's not so ridiculous for me that he's able to come up to speed with the other characters after not training for awhile. Saiyans are gifted fighters by nature, and Gohan has been shown throughout the series to be an exceptionally gifted fighter. The juxtaposition here is that he doesn't care to hone his innate skill. He doesn't like fighting and has only done it when he had no choice. Not only that, but when he's been required to fight, he usually has to get stronger in a short amount of time, as is the pattern in Dragon Ball. This, coupled with his talent for growth (and the absurd power-scaling post-Cell saga) makes him look like an asspull, but I don't personally so. The dichotomy of his character is what makes him interesting to me.
That said...Toriyama has done a terrible job with him (and really everyone not named Goku or Vegeta) for years now. Pretty much since Super started.

I forget what he says afterwards but he smiles, and piccolo turns his head in a way like "he's actually been training"
Kinda like how frieza trained off screen but still he trained.
The buu saga power can be debated. But the dbs gohan before t.o.p arc was not too long after the buu saga. I wouldn't say gohan was weak, but rusty. Kinda like how you take a rest week from the gym and come back. You'll be a little rusty but be stronger after a day or two of shaking of the rust.

For the first super Saiyan, Vegeta kept hyping up the legend for so many episodes, and Goku's power jumps hinted that he might have finally done it but we could never tell. Then he turned Golden only after he got angry from his friends deaths, and Saiyan's are a warrior race so are known for pride and anger and revenge. It made sense.
The second one also had a climb to get to it. They each trained in the hyperbolic time chamber, and each ascended past the first level but to an incomplete bulky one. Goku tells Gohan to stay in super Saiyan form so they can get used to it, and so it feels like there's an actual logic and work that needs to be put in. Then Gohan passes everyone up and finally unlocks his real potential and it feels satisfying, especially that cell was like the 10th android they fought.
Super Saiyan three was the most random but we at least get told that Goku has been training with basically Gods that have been training for millennium, and he even battles ss2 Vegeta beforehand so we know they haven't been sitting around. And even after all this ss3 was sort of incomplete because Goku could only maintain it for a limited amount of time.

It could've been a way to give him a form he made from what he wants to be, a scholar, unlike his predecessors who are primarily fighters/martial artists. They could've gone with the Kaioken Blue reason for not wanting to use it right away(it being VERY risky on the body if done improperly) if Piccolo asked why he didn't just use it immediately. That's just me though, I love Gohan living his life, but I feel like he should know how important it is to keep up with his dad and Vegeta, but I don't think having him sacrifice either is good. the worst part about the granola arc wish power ups is that it blatantly contradicts everything we know about the dragon balls up to that point. Dragon balls aren't supposed to be able to grant wishes like that, otherwise there'd be no point to any of the struggles anyone has faced up to that point if they could have just wished them away the entire time. When a fictional universe contradicts its own rules for the sake of drama, it becomes bs.
They try to get around it by saying it's a different set of dragon balls, but that makes it even more bs.
I'd be more okay with it if it were the super dragon balls granting that kind of wish since those are the original dragon balls with no rules, and the series is named after them after all. Maybe if they had an arc leading up to it where Granola spent time hunting down the super dragon balls across multiple universes or something it would have felt more earned

Another important thing to keep in mind with piccolo is that when he gets his potential unlocked by shenron it is after he is the combined form of piccolo, kami, and nail. on top of everything already established, you could make the case its the multiplied power of all of their potential being unlocked. Even if they become a single individual after fusing they all lived individual lives before that which would add to the amount of potential piccolo could have unlocked.

Don't forget that before fusing with Piccolo, Nail had a power level of over 40,000. Which means he could have soloed base form Vegeta, and even taken out several of the Ginyu Force, as the captain states a power of 60,000 would have been needed to solo them all. He was also able to somehow sense that had Piccolo fused with Kami before coming to Namek, he would have been powerful enough to defeat Frieza on his own. Which seemed to be the case, as during the Cell saga, them fusing was strong enough to fight evenly with 17, after he manhandled Super Saiyan Trunks.

Shenron might be Piccolo's dragon (or Kamiccolo's, if you want) which would validate the point that it's his own power being used on himself, but, although it might not interfere in the idea of the power-up being earned or not, it definitely makes sense to have one of the forms as his own potential being unlocked by himself (yellow, probably) and the other as an effect of Dende's power (orange form) which Shenron refers to as a gift.

that is not what earned means.. Yes we all wanted Piccolo to be relevant and get a power up to keep up with the others because he has been growing in the past and been relevant before, but that doesn’t mean every power up he does get is automatically ”earned”.
His power up was absolutely not earned. This series has been going on for years and during multiple life threatning situations, it never dawned on Piccolo that he could just ask the Dragon to bring out his potential to be relevant? And the same could (and should) be done to every character if the Dragon is able to so that. But now suddenly Dende is just able to ”upgrade the Dragon suddenly and Shenron not only gives a free potential unlock for Piccolo out of nowhere, but also gives him an entirely new form out of nowhere when *absolutely nothing* ever in the series has implied namekians have any sort of transformations.

Piccolo earned this transformation by returning to his old self entirely, which was done by the dragon giving back to him after all he gave to it, dende just upgraded the dragon to do the technique that's all. Unlocking your potential just unlocks the power you already had, and considering all piccolo does is train, it doesn't make sense as to why he's so incredibly underpowered. His power stagnated for no real reason, and piccolo is one of the only characters who has not gotten a potential unlock in the slightest, all of that combined with his talent and diligence. I've never had a problem with Caulifla's Super Sayan and the "tingle in the back"
We saw Goku transform, and then be able to use the form at will, but when it came time to teach the form to Gohan, he wanted to put Gohan through similar strife as he went through to "unlock" it instead of teaching him the technique of how he does it at will.
Same with Future Gohan and Future Trunks. Gohan tries to focus on the trauma and anger.
Vegeta also did the same thing with Cabba...
All of them were so concentrated on how they first turned super sayan that none of them even considered that now they do it without it.
Cabba would never have been able to bestow that sort of anger uppon Caulifla, and she rightfully asked him how he does it now that his first time is through. He tells her and she can transform.
Dragon Ball often also does that whole thing where people are "on the cusp" of a new form and just need to push through the glass ceiling. From Cabba's admission, Caulifla was already much stronger than he was. She wasn't just almost Super Sayan level, she had burst through that level already and just needed to learn how to trigger and control the form.
As far as unearned powerup go, it is hard not to mention Super Dragonball Heroes... it has a dubious canon, but Future/Xeno Trunks becoming Super Sayan God OFFSCREEN was quite the kick in the nuts.

That didn't stop him from still being narratively useful.
In the anime's last arc when some of the other demons somewhat caught up with the help of genkai's training, that was the actual bad writing part. And even then, they at least still made ryzen's friends hard stomp them.

9:05 in the manga (which came after the anime) 17's power up is rectified. Cell Jrs(Cells kids who have his DNA and therefore Saiyan DNA) are also on the island. It could be said that the Cell Jrs got 17 to where he is, but since 6 of them couldnt defeat SSJ Trunks and Goten, then 17 should be SS2 (SS3 if generous)level so Blue dont make sense(maybe Goku was holding back)

If Gohan can be a bum and train for 2-3 years and get to god level for the T.O.P. I don't see a problem with 17 training for 10-15 YEARS, and getting to god level with no god ki. He's also talented, was created to destroy ssjs WITHOUT TRAINING and had the time, energy and enhanced potential to put in the work. Like Gohan, it's a bit of a leap but isn't a deal breaker.

orange piccolo is definitely earned in my opinion, he fused with a warrior of namek who fought to his last breath in order to keep a tyrant from getting his wish and preserving the last of his people from dying, even though super kami guru and dende still died but got revived, and plus since nail was willing to give his own life and try a forbidden technique among namekians just to stop frieza, piccolo kind of gained nails willpower having him become more in tune with the fighting clan of the namekian race and also gaining some of nails personality in a small sense, after the battle with frieza he trained his mind and body in order to get stronger especially since goku wasnt there, and constantly did so throughout dragonball, later he assimilated with kami restoring him to his full strength which was probably cut in half at the time since he was just 1 half of a whole, he also gained some of kamis personality traits more wisdom and inherited the dragon clan part of him forming a sort of ying yang between the warrior and dragon clan of both namekians and honing both powers of each, piccolo later in super hero after years of having this power and possibly gaining some of kami an nails memories making him more knowledgeable of his own race, with the dragonballs he asked for his hidden potential to be unlocked and since shenron threw in that little bit extra it kinda seems like shenron knows how far hes come, so he threw in the long sought after power of every warrior namekian but only piccolo has proven himself to truly earn that power

Piccolo doesnt seems like the type of guy to enjoy the thrill of training, he does it because it is necessary, so why didnt he do that back at the Top? The thing with the universe 6 sayings that a lot of people forget is that it's a literal alternate universe. Not all the rules are going to be the same and not everything is going to happen the same way. Uni 6 Saiyans could also just have more s cells than uni 7 ones do.

For Piccolo's power up leading into his merging with Nail, I can personally see his improvement being viable. Goku had a similarly extreme jump in power in only 6 days. Piccolo mean while, had nearly the entire year between his death, to when Goku left for namek in the first place. And was likely already well beyond how powerful Goku was when he left earth.
If anything, Piccolo becoming roughly to the same level of Goku when he arrived to Namek would be fairly fitting, as Piccolo and Goku have had this thing where they trade back and forth on who's stronger. being roughly even when Raditz showed up. to Piccolo surpassing goku's level soon after with his own training on earth, though being quickly surpassed by Goku training with North Kai.
Piccolo also being in the 100 to 200 thousand range also at least makes sense for the Filler episode where North Kai had the dead members of the Genyu Force be sent to his planet as opponents for Yamcha, Tien, Chiaotzu, and Piccolo. And while the others had a fairly tough time handling them. Piccolo was the one who handled them rather easily. Likely even holding back quite a bit.
So Filler wise, it supports Piccolo being above 100 thousand.
Just to throw a few numbers to play with, Piccolo was roughly in the 300 to 400 range during his fight with Raditz. his special beam cannon reaching 1330. Though that's just the power of the charged up attack.
Saiyan Saga Piccolo reached 3500 after 1 year of training for the saiyan attack. a roughly 10x power boost after one year of training on earth.
North Kai, when Goku arrived, claimed that training for only 158 days on his planet, is the equivalent of "several thousand years" of training on earth. As dubious as that is, the 10x gravity on the planet at the very least implies that training done there, is 10 times more effective than training on earth.
So Piccolo was able to achieve 10x his power after one year of training using his personal training methods. Using those same training methods on North Kai's planet would have 10 times more effectiveness. So instead of a 10X boost after one year, it would be a 100x boost.
He arrived to North Kai's planet with 3500 power, and had it been on earth, his year of training would have gotten him to 35,000. but instead, the 10x effectiveness would make his power 350,000 instead. going even above the estimated 200 thousand high end.
In a way, this makes it even more accurate to the show, as even with that power, he'd still be only just above half of Frieza's original form that Nail faced against. Meaning the Merging was still a requirement to even hope to fight Frieza.
