It is so different from other instruments in that the sounds it creates can actually create some sense of dread. Explains why some horror movies have used it
It's doors creaking, pianos ringing in the night, monsters guterral breathing in the distance, cries of ghost children, thunder, footsteps in an empty house, loud heartbeats, and clocks ticking out of time, alien beings from the darkest planets in the universe, mutant wolves howling, demons raising from hell, and machinery come to life. That's just the first 2 minutes. That's what makes this machine so eerie.
Anyone who is into this kind of music should check out dark ambient music. I would start with Svarte Greiner and Atrium Carceri, and his label Cryo Chamber. Have fun!
@@_AGONY you know that the individual violins used in orchestras that score horror movies also cost around 10K each, right? Studios wouldn't buy an apprehension engine. They would hire composers to score their films and the composer may choose to use this machine.
I fell in love with the Engine two weeks ago after reading an interview with Trent Reznor. The Engine is more than just an instrument, it is a modern work of art! Unfortunately the price for a true Engine is far out of my reach, but I'm going to try to build something similar over the summer. Thanks for a great instrument and great performances!
Thanks so much. Definitely build your own. That's the spirit of this whole thing. To find your own creative voice by going beyond traditional instruments. Customize. Add new things. Explore the possibilities. Have fun!!!
At music school we had classes about contemporary music, including authors like Xenakis, Varèse, Henry, Stockhausen, Boulez... This is video shows their legacy.
Music free of melody and harmony, forced endings, opinions, celebrity, false promises, rigidity, and overbearing personality- that's why many of us find this soothing.
Brilliant. Powerful. I'm glad I didn't die of covid so I could hear Apprehension in Quarantine. I'm listening toward the midnight hour with headphones but I can't wait to plug in speakers.
I would happily buy an album worth of this. That would be better than playing this one track over and over again (which is what I'm currently doing) :) Love your soundtracks btw!
I'm in the process of getting a custom amplifier built for me, a replica of a vintage Sunn Model T, which is a beast in its own right. After, I'll be trying to come up with similar sounds via my modified Telecaster, pedals, violin bow/e-bow and a looper etc., and I plan on adding a Matamp GT120 for stereo effect. Thank you for your inspiration.
@INDIE FILM MAKER Are you Mark Koven? If so, you're soundtrack for the movie Cube is amazing especially the main theme of the film called ''Escape''. Thank you for the wonderful soundtrack!
I built my own version of this, from stuff I had laying around and picked up cheap at flea markets, etc. It isn't as awesome as this one, but it was a fun project to build.
Wish Dr Who would be scored by this. Verity Lambert did want experimental music as an integral part of the program. It needs to get otherworldly like this !

To Anyone who complains about MRI noises I dare y'all to listen to this for 45 minutes straight in a cold cramped space where you can't move. The doctor's interludes would be the worst.
Thanks! I use 3 little boss looping pedals. One for the E-bow, one for ambient sounds, and one for rhythmic sounds. They don't run in sync and are completely independent, the way I like it!
Are you running this into any effects pedals other than your loopers? I see a pickup there but how do you capture the other sounds? Are there mic’d built in or how does that work?
Hi Tony. Yes, I'm using an Eventide harmonizer on the E-bow string with a custom built distortion box. Also a reverb and a boss EQ pedal. The box sounds are captured with built in contact pickups
Sure. I'm using 3 little Boss looping pedals. Once for Rhythmic loops, one for Textural Loops, and one hooked up to my E-bow string. I did it that way so that I had 3 completely independent loops.
@@indiefilmandmusic Thank you so much for the speedy response! The Boss RC loopers aren't synchronised then, I suppose. All the more impressive! Absolutely wonderful, evocative music.
Benjamin Fowler hi Benjamin. The piezo’s are on one output, the single coil on another, and the spring reverb on another. For the video, I ran the mix through a stereo modulator to give it some spread.
Imagine this being played live against a silent horror film. Wow.
Can we get a Tom Waits collaboration?... "What's he building in there"?
