*Hey Beth. Im from Latvia didnt expect to see EVER something from my country* :D Thanks.
No problem!!
Right?! Fellow Latvian metalhead here
So in neighboring Lithuania, they also celebrate "Rasos", midsummers. They also search for the fern flower. But it's well understood that searching the fern flower is an excuse for young couples to elope to the woods, for some, um, "alone time".
@@WilliamJohnstone-cj5od Who hurt you?
It's Rasa. Rasos is the genitive form. For instance, Rasos Naktis is Rasa Night (or Summer Solstice Night). Rasos Šventė is Rasa Holiday/Festival. You would never simply say Rasos - to use that declension it must be modifying another noun. But yes, Jani and Rasa are very similar.
Exactly. In Latvia, "looking for a fern flower" on a midsummer night is also not about wish-granting but a euphemism for copulation because there is no such thing as a flowering fern.
YES, YES, YOU AND YOUR LITHUANIA, OFCOURSE.......... GET LOST , I'm from Latvia, there we talk about Latvia, nothing to do with your Lithuania at all like ever ...
@@Lita-bj5ir Wow Lita, there are friendly neighbors who celebrate each other, and then there is you.
The voices! The dance! The smiles! The language! The outfits! This was such a joy to watch and listen to.
And... now that you brought it up... I think you need to gather a couple of your lady friends and show off one of those Scottish weavers songs for us!
Hi, Beth! You've encountered Tautumeitas at last. They are realy great! Please, check, if you'd like, some other excellent songs of them: Spodre manu auguminu or Dai citas meitas. These you can find as live performance. Have fun!
If Beth liked Tautumeitas then DakhaBrakha will blow up her world. I would suggest Yahudki or Baby, but there is a RUclips video with both groups playing together in 2018 blending beautifully their respective songs... it is brilliant!
@@user-nr5kn3bx7m-yes! I'd also like to see her react to some Lithuanian sutartines - like those by Trys Keturiose since she was talking about women singing together. I'll have to choose a song and come back and edit this comment. Ot even Kulgrinda - perhaps Sadula Gadula.
Good one. Raganu Nakts actually means Witches Night in Latvian. Thus, the girls are in black. And the roar is one of the Wolf... or even worse. No lions in Latvia yet.
I love music 🎼 from different countries. I have seen Traditional German and Irish ☘️ song and dance 💃 and it was fantastic. 👍❤️ Thanks for sharing this Beth.
A gorgeous discovery of sound and culture! 🎉 a treasure trove! 🎉 🎤 🎧 !!
This is from their self-titled 2018 album, which has so many great tracks. Hopefully you can check them out someday! 😊
Don't know much about Latvia...it's next to Russia and is a Baltic country...but..if they like beer and cheese they would fit right in with Wisconsin 😊. Interesting concept that music echoed nature traditionally because nature was there, etc. I tend to think music still echoes nature but in many more forms because new forms have been created. Yesterday...drums. Today..orchestras. Just thinking out loud. This was a fun song. I need to attend that festival...lots of benefits! 😁
There is actually a traditional Latvian homestead in Wisconsin that is owned by a collective of Latvian pagans/Dievturi, so you're spot on! They maintain the house and use it for holidays and celebrations but rent out the farmland. I think to Amish. I'm a Lithuanian pagan/ Romuva and was fortunate to have been invited there as a guest once.
Trad Tuesdays are a fantastic idea, really down for that.
I'd love to suggest Verka Siderova (Lale li si, godini godini,...), Stefka Sabotinova (Prituri se Planinata), Vulkana Stoyanova (Jenala e dyulber Yana), Abagar Quartet (Shopski pripevki) [Bulgaria], Nick Hart (especially from the new record with Tom Moore [UK], Ugniavijas (Tu Eglute) and Obelija (Kas tar taka) [Lithuania]
Great that you posted your Patreon this time. Great site ! This rhythm track reminds me of Clannad. The harp player is Maire (Moyo) Brennan. (Enyas sister) clannad and especially Moyo's first album have wonderful drumbeat tracks.
I really enjoyed this Beth! The singing, dancing, instruments, and music reminded me of other cultures, while different, are very similar. And your comments and explanations are always incitefu. Thanks Professor Beth.😊
I always get tingles up my spine at the point when they cascade out of monody into a-capella harmony.
The polytheistic cultures of the eastern Baltic, which persisted into the 12th century before being swamped by christianity, were pretty special; proto-democratic and with gender equality, and a non-exploitative attitude to the nature around them. They were the diametric opposite of the strongly hierarchical and feudalistic Christian societies to the south and west. There has been a revival of that pre-christian tradition in recent years and I think that is a commendable thing.
Romantic and foolish. True Christianity is better than paganism.
You are awesome, you could be one of the līgo meitas. Its a magical experience. Embrace the paganism and enjoy the flow. Jauku nakti un sveiki :)
actually Raganu nakts means Witchcraft night :) I am from Latvia and Midsomer festival is connected to nature celebration. Love your reactions and emotions
P.S. in order to have correctly ritual you would need to roll in meadow naked :D are you properad to this? here is some other folk song where women song together ruclips.net/video/rETv-fv6RWs/видео.html
The Latvians, ethnic European music with extreme intensity!
Perfect👏🏽
Hello! Beth Roars. I follow your channel and I really love your reactions.
I saw that you did several reactions with Brazilian singers, but you haven't done it with Tim Maia yet. You'll love his voice and his backing vocals. The recommended songs are:
"you";
She left.
Thank you very much
How cute!
❤❤❤
Bello baile, buen contenido. Que sigan los éxitos 👏
The ancient-spirited music, folky dancing with costumes that unite old fashion with modern twist and then bicycle sprockets as necklaces? They wanted to throw it all in!
Anyway this music is so bond to a specific region and on the other hand if I close my eyes it can be native americans dancing around the fire or caribbean tribes celebrating on the beaches or maybe carnival in brazil or south-east asians in the monsun rain forrest...
ferm flowers and all the stuff around mid summer is all about copulation. The purpose was to get a child in march as a it's the spring time, you'll get the child.
The docu film "baltic tribes" is free in the states (with commercial) and really cool to watch !

Also, Beth. Another great site for World Music is PLAYING FOR CHANGE.
They'll play a song like Peace Train and for that one song cut to 20 different countries with all kinds of World intruments....all during that one song. Finally they cut to Cat Stevens to end his own song on piano. It includes choirs from around the wold as well.
Que lindo..

In Latvian, Ragana means witch.
Good
5:09 - The whole "Looking for the Fern Flower" thing is also more of an excuse for young couples to disappear into the forest for a while. And since Jāņi also is a celebration of fertility... well. I don't think I have to tell you. 🤭
Bien
Muy interesante 😊😸

A typical son of Jāņi is this one: ruclips.net/video/A2r-uspx6LM/видео.html , where different folk groups are singing about the oak tree. All musicians, except the firth group, are dressed in folk costumes (though, in case of kids, it is simply the cheapest version possible), and one more detail: men always have crowns oak leaves, but women - of flowers, and all women, even the married ones, are allowed to wear hair uncovered and loose (though married women did not cover their hear until high middle ages or so).

Please watch Ягода - Три девицы
It shows a strong voice and has wonderful Slavic vibes 🎉
Como?
There are many of these types of women's singing groups emerging from Slavic countries in the past decade. There is a long tradition of women singing various songs especially in the rural areas.
Beth, I'm trying to send texts to the number you have listed but I think my plan isn't international (I'm in Canada). Is there an alternative way we can send you suggestions for reactions? I have a lot of suggestions for you that I think you'll like!
Latvia is not a Slavic country though.
@@JohnHenryEden2277- an important distinction, but it's a common mistake to conflate Baltic countries/languages/etc. with Slavic. So thank you.

Beth, as exciting as this is to many, this is essentially the worship of pre-Christian gods. These women have chosen to by-pass Christianity. Not advisable. Yes, it is invigorating, earthy, fun, fun, fun .. but what is it really ? Paganism.
