The variety of timbres being produced by what is at first glance a seemingly straightforward build is genius. This is not to say it looks incapable; merely that it lies to the viewer/listener by at first seeming mostly natural. It is almost as if it is the embodiment of the horror figure to whom it lends its power. It is a metaphor for the horror flick. All seems normal at first. People approachable. Only in time does it reveal more and more of its sinister nature; by then it is too late to turn back. Springs and the slapping of metal rulers bringing their own natural reverberant sounds only to be fed into the man-made analog(?)/digital(?) device bringing together the realm of the is-on-its-own with the man-made. Reverberation grows. The bow comes from the same world of the everyday as do its partners wood and metal. The piercing screech has no need of electricity yet, if we don't wish to use electricity. It is sufficient unto itself yet yields to the e-bow's power over the strings. It forces the string to vibrate, to do as it says to do. It is in control. It is the killer or the apparition. All the while it is still the reverb giving the space, or at least sense of space, needed to bring everything to a point where it cannot be anything but real. I'm truly wowed. I'm not an expert in the mad experiments of the end of the 19th century, 20th and continuing still alive this second. I have, though, seen and heard enough to truly appreciate what you have here. It just occurred to me it brings the three centuries together in one unit. Thankfully, you don't need a dynamo to power it or manual switch operators just the net to broadcast. I could go on and on and on but I'll not trouble you further. Oh, how I would love to jam with you!
INDIE FILM MAKER Hey, no problem. I’m wowed by the Engine. If I had one, I’d go out to my shop, start playing and never be heard from again. Although it’s kind of how it is to begin with lol. I’m just amazed at all that wonderful machine can do. A buddy of mine went to school to be a Luthier and it’s times like these I wish he would have been able to stick with it after. Unless you’re already established it’s hard to build guitars and feed babies. Sorry, I can ramble. Please do feel free to post it. If you don’t mind, after my name could you put publicdoename. That’s my “creates things” name. I assume your website is on your page here. If not, please do shoot me a link. I’d like to check it out and get to know you a little better. I posted to Twitter the cemetery vid and I believe I did the one that gives some background on the Apprehension Engine as well. There is no other combination of words that could be more appropriate. You’re pretty good at it too. Put a couple of sticks in forrest dweller’s hands and he simply walks around with them. Do the same to another and you have some crazy drumming happening after a few days. ✌🏻
Just gotta love those horror sounds. Kinda sounds like early days of Pink Floyd. Needs some reverb and delay pedals through a 150 watt amp. I can make most of those sounds with my guitar, pedals and my amp.
Kalimba, Hurdy-gurdy, coil reverb, resonant chamber, E-bow. bass bow, a guitar pick-up, ... and that's just what I could see. I hear a looper in the mix. I'd sure like to know what mics, amps, pick-ups and other sound processors are being used here.
Some metal rulers played with a nyckelharpa bow and a porcelain slide. A godawful looper that blew up on me that night (I've since gone back to good old dependable Boss). Clock spring. Steel rod. Baggs preamp. Reverb pedal, K&K piezo contact pickups, and a 200-year old church.
The sound of trascendence.... reminds me equaly horror sounds and in some way the older prehistoric sounds..... indeed is like a shamanic sound that cames after you go down between roots.. sounds of the inner earth (hell or Inferno)...
I feel like this is great, but in the "Sounds for 2019" video you rely too much on looping what you're playing... sometimes it gets too crowded after a few loops through.
My mother used to sing this to me every night.
You have a very disturbing past.
Space Plant Ok
Thought I was the only one
Concerning but informative.
Can i borrow your mom?
"Live in a Cemetery" OK, got it.
Lol
Imagine hearing these sounds in a forest at night.
HI How are you?
NOPE
I feel like this is what an audible decent into madness sounds like
Sthu
Yeah, kinda like having to sit through a democratic debate.
it's louder.
My kind of asmr
hahahaha nailed it
Is it strange that I enjoy listening to this?
Yes. But then I also find it strange that I really enjoy making these sounds.
Nope!!!!!!
Peter Yost nah I find it kinda relaxing
not If you're an audiophile
:D
I need this device and a new pair of pants.
Best comment so far!
hahahahhahahaaahaa
Doyoubi no Ame it costs 10k$😂
Well, it's like 10.000$ so I don't think's a good idea
They cost 10k, but I’m about to start building one and you can too
This would be perfect for orchestrating with metal. The ambiance it produces is beautiful. Truly an art piece.
I'm happy I wasn't the only one who thought that.
Italian Band Messa has some tones that kinda sounds similar... Man... this get me into the Progressive Metal Mood :D
You have to be really specific about what genre you mean for this to even begin to make sense
@@kevinsundelin8639 black metal ambient deathcore
If Mick Gordon and Aubrey Hodges has a baby
Absolutely, horrifically gorgeous.
I would go and see this concert.
baragoth others at the concert singing along like: *sounds of the devil himself*
This is WONDERFUL!! I wish you did the score for IT Mark.
Thanks!
Mark Korven did the score for The Witch!
Cold, Dark damp woods, wet earth and decay is what I get from this beautiful display. Wow.
This is the most awesome artistic display of music ive ever heard. Thank you for sharing this. The instrument and composer are genius.

Wow. Very nicely written Bret. Much obliged. Would you be okay with it if I quoted you for a bit on my website (with credit of course)?

Jesus... pretentious much.
Nice copypasta
Flying dutchman be like: Is horror an instrument?
Wonder what the sheet music for this looks like.
Drop this sheet, bite these shrooms... "Play what you see" Staff is actually blank
If you draw the note sheet in a circle on the ground you can summon a demon.
You should check out graphic notation :D
I don,t care what anybody says. This is Music and Art. 5:20 reminded me of Bladerunner 2049
F1rstp3rson Benjamin wallsfisch, one of the best sound designers out there. Nobody is doubting that this is music and art lol
This is a marvel of a machine. This'll redifine ALL horror scores.
and now it's clichéd.
John the Savage no it definitely isn’t
That demon breath at 1.00 is bone chilling
What a coinsidence I found this video one day before its anniversary...again.
Shivers man. And im watching it on purpose.
Friend:Well, I'm playing the guitar, what's ur instrument?
Me: I'm playing the death machine
Words that i would use the desribe this.
War, Agony, Pain, Hell, .... family reunion
Dear Santa, please bring me an Apprehension Engine for Christmas.
Thank you.
Deae Fortesque, why not just build one yourself?
I love these sounds. I need this instrument for myself, so i can make horrifying noises in our neighborhood.
This is hauntingly beautiful, this is art...
I would wear a cloak, ceremonial dagger and inverted cross during a concert like this
Now I know where the May Payne game soundtrack came from.
No joke. Really comforting.
Damn it seems like all the fun festivals and what not are everywhere BUT in Oklahoma 😭!
I've volunteered to help with a psychological thrilled being produced by a local studio and I'm building an instrument similar to this.
How did it turn out?
Still better than pop music in 2019, experimental album with this FTW
It's so amazing, I have no words to describe how this makes me feel. You two are genius o-o
Thanks!
It sounds so beautiful!
Thanks!
INDIE FILM MAKER can I use couple of your sounds in a one of my subliminal videos I make if I put you down for the credit?
i want to see this live
Goddamn this instrument is fucking awesome...
Hey Mark! I'm a big fan of yours, your score of the Witch was the inspiration I needed. Thanks.
Hope you return posting more videos.
Hug.
Thanks Aless! Yes, I will return for more videos.
Yeah.. the witch terrified me. Great sounds
I put my headphones on and ran down the middle of the street completely naked listening to this. No one else understood.
Я можу зказати що дуже класно чудово ,
я би особисто побувала на цьому концерті й підняла собі
Адреналін.
abselutly mind blowing fantastic
Bastante bueno y estimulantes los sonidos producidos
This relaxes me.
Good Job brother,,,, I Like it,,,,
That is so amazing!!!
Dead People: shut up im tryna sleep smh
Love it!!!!
Wonderful✨😍 I like it
Yet again I'm reminded of Jimmy Page's 'Lucifer Rising' soundtrack as well as some of the sounds he used during his solos on the 1977 Zeppelin tour.
This is fucking beautiful
This is amazing art!
Thanks Jessica.
i need this instrument as a vst plugin

I should go to a campaig ground and play this when everyone is sleeping I bet they'll never come back again
Beautiful, powerful music. Composed piece, improvised, or hybrid?
Mostly improvised. Thanks!
INDIE FILM MAKER what do you mean “thanks”? It’s not you playing it, you can see at 3:25 that it’s mark korven

Is there anyway, anywhere i can find your music? And would i be able to use it?

Sure

Awesome!
Thanks Laura!
Sounds somewhat similar to the soundtrack to the Texas Chainsaw Massacre back in the early 1970s
That would make a great drum bass house music 😂
Who's that little girl in the bloodied white dress staring at me with no eyes from afar? Probably nothing...
Needs more duduk.
Muso Master what
can we use this in our indie short film? we will you also in credential.
Sorry....no.
